MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Shane Lyons

We have great student-athletes at West Virginia University who compete on the fields and courts and in the classroom to make you proud. They are hard-working young men and women who care and want the best for our department, which is why I am excited to share this 2018-19 annual report with you. There are so many things highlighted in the coming pages that will tell the story of our year. We accomplished so much together, and our department continues to grow. For starters, and very importantly, we announced our Climbing Higher Facilities Master Plan last August, which is an aggressive fundraising campaign to raise $100 million. I can talk forever about how much our department needs these upgrades in key areas like the Puskar Center and the Coliseum Complex to challenge for championships in a Power 5 conference, and that is why I am so passionate about the campaign. I want you to know that this campaign has not been undertaken because of wants, it’s because of needs. It’s no secret that we underwent a coaching change in football after the 2018 season. I want to thank Dana Holgorsen for his eight years here at WVU and at the same time tell you how excited I am about Neal Brown’s program. We hired one of the best young coaches in America and the transition has been a smooth one. Coach Brown needs time to build his program, but I am extremely pleased with the staff he has assembled and the direction we are headed. Earlier this summer, I announced the results of an Economic Impact Study conducted by the nationally respected agency Tripp Umbach. I wasn’t, but many people were surprised to learn that WVU Athletics brings in $302.7 million to the state’s economy and $78.8 million to Monongalia County. Those are strong numbers coming from the Mountaineers, and it proves what I have been saying all along about how important our department is to the state. As far as season highlights, you will read plenty in the upcoming pages, but I will note that both soccer teams made the NCAA tournament, football made its fifth straight bowl game as Will Grier finished fourth for the Heisman. Rifle finished as the NCAA runner-up, while five wrestlers and three swimmers were individual qualifiers to NCAA postseason competition. Baseball turned in a great season as did the golf team as the two teams made strong NCAA postseason appearances. Finally, the new outdoor track opened at Mylan Park, which allowed us to host an outdoor meet for the first time in years. Next year, the new aquatic center will open to the benefit of the entire community. In total, we produced 43 All-Americans, 81 All-Conference performers, 21 individual NCAA qualifiers, seven NCAA team qualifiers, three conference championships and 22 pro draft picks. Also, we had another great year academically we had, and I have nothing but praise for our academic unit. The department posted its highest APR score ever at 985, which was above the national average. Four teams, men’s basketball, rifle, golf, and women’s tennis posted a perfect 1,000 APR score. The overall department GPA was an impressive 3.26, while football had its highest team GPA ever at 2.94.

2

Overall, we had four Academic All-Americans, 230 Academic All-Conference selections, 36 academic award winners, two Rhodes Scholar finalists and a Senior CLASS Award winner. When it comes to staff, I cannot tell you how proud I am of our department, and the people that make it tick. We hosted more than 150 events in the past year with the likes of NCAA soccer, the Big 12 Golf Championships at The Greenbrier and an NCAA baseball regional for the first time since 1955. In March, WVU was the host of its first national championship event with the NCAA Rifle national championship taking place in the Coliseum to rave reviews. I want to thank the fans who have supported these great events in true Mountaineer fashion. I also want to thank the Mountaineer Athletic Club donors for your generous support. None of our success would happen without the MAC and our fans. Thank you for your contributions, and we appreciate your understanding of how you can make a difference. In the coming year, I will continue to serve on the NCAA Division I Council, while also chairing the Division I Football Oversight Committee. It’s an honor to represent my alma mater on these prestigious national committees, and our department will come to work every day with one goal in mind – to make you proud of your Mountaineers. Sincerely

Shane Lyons Director of Athletics/Associate Vice President West Virginia University

CLIMBING HIGHER CAMPAIGN UNVEILED WVU Intercollegiate Athletics unveiled Climbing Higher, its Athletics Facilities Master plan, last August. The ambitious plan will include renovations to the Puskar Center, Coliseum Complex and Cary Gym, as well as a new golf facility. These student-athlete focused renovations will include a new Olympic Sports Weight room and performance area, new team locker rooms and lounge spaces, as well as updated team/coaching meeting rooms. These enhancements are vital to help West Virginia to recruit, retain and train student-athletes, while continuing to compete for Big 12, MAC, GARC and NCAA Championships. To learn more about the campaign, visit wvusports.com/climbinghigher.

WVU COLISEUM COMPLEX The Coliseum Complex will connect existing and future facilities, renovate underutilized facilities and bring a consistent aesthetic to all the buildings and plazas. Renovations will also include a new Olympic Sport weight room and performance center, as well as house team locker rooms and a shared lounge for track, rifle, wrestling, men’s and women’s soccer, golf and rowing.

PUSKAR CENTER COMPLEX The Puskar Center Complex identifies approximately 72,000 square feet of renovation and 13,700 square feet of expansion to reflect WVU Football’s success and promote its future. Key project needs include a renovated athletic training room with a new hydrotherapy center, an expanded locker room with wider lockers and updated ventilation and a renovated team lounge.

WVU PARTNERS WITH NIKE’S GLOBAL IDENTITY GROUP West Virginia University’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Nike’s Global Identity Group (GIG) partnered on a graphics and uniform package designed to further enhance the West Virginia brand on the national level.

18

The objective of the exercise for the past two years extended far greater than just new uniforms for the Mountaineers’ 18 varsity sports. The process brought a consistent and unified look across the athletics department and provides staff, corporate partners and suppliers with helpful guidelines to support the WVU athletics brand across a wide range of applications and media.

Nike’s GIG process speaks volumes for our department.” The first element of the Nike GIG process was unveiled at the GoldBlue spring football game with new football uniforms. Other new West Virginia uniforms, including men’s and women’s basketball, will be revealed in the coming months. Mountaineer football will don the Nike Vapor Untouchable uniform chassis in 2019 and will return to four colors of jerseys and pants for the 2019 campaign after spending the past six seasons using “The opportunity for Nike to work with a tradition-rich program like West Virginia is very exciting,” Nike Senior Director, College Sports Marketing, Kit Morris said. “The history and success of the Mountaineers provide much to inspire us as we continue to seek to become better together. There is no finish line.” To accompany the iconic Flying WV logo, the GIG process created an exclusive numeral style, wordmarks, color palette, special typography and fonts as well as extended expressions including treatments, patterns and textures solely for WVU

Athletics. These new and dynamic elements will allow the athletics department to be creative and flexible across all types of media and provide a look that is solely identified to West Virginia’s team – the Mountaineers. “I am excited to bring our marks together in a unified look,” Director of Athletics Shane Lyons said. “For the first time in our history, all teams will share the same colors, numbers and wordmarks, which will improve our overall look. I want to thank Nike for its time and commitment to the project and for valuing the West Virginia brand. Being a member of

three colors of jerseys and pants. Rejoining blue, gold and white in the color scheme are a gray jersey and pant, which last appeared in game action in 2012. The 2019 version for football will be Nike’s Steel Gray and is a tribute to the toughness of the hardworking people in the state of West Virginia and the strength that all Mountaineers possess. WVU ATHLETICS MEANS BIG BUSINESS We’ve long known that intercollegiate athletics plays a major role in local economies. How big? That’s a question West Virginia University director of athletics Shane Lyons set out to answer two years ago when he saw an economic impact study that West Virginia University once conducted to quantify its overall university operations. Lyons wanted to know, specifically, what a college football or college basketball game played in Morgantown, West Virginia, meant to Monongalia County and the entire state of West Virginia.

How valuable?

So he commissioned Tripp Umbach, a nationally acclaimed research company that has conducted more than 200 economic impact studies over the last 25 years, to do a comprehensive study of Mountaineer athletics during the course of the 2017-18 academic year.

The economic impact alone to the state of West Virginia is at least $302.7 million per year. Locally, the economic impact to Monongalia County is $78.8 million and the overall tax impact to the state of West Virginia is roughly $18.6 million.

What the report uncovered is rather astonishing, although probably not all that surprising to anyone who takes a family of four to Milan Puskar Stadium to watch a college football game: Mountaineer athletics is extremely valuable to the state of West Virginia.

Most significantly, of the $302 million WVU athletics generates on a yearly basis, $246 million is coming from visitor and fan spending. That means money from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and anywhere else outside of West Virginia is coming into the state.

20

2018-19

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

To give you an apples to oranges example of what $302 million means, that’s roughly three times more than the city of Charleston’s YEARLY budget. There is nothing event-driven in West Virginia the comes close to what WVU athletics means economically to the state on a yearly basis - not Marshall athletics, not the State Fair, not The Greenbrier Classic, not the state high school basketball tournaments, the Super Six football championships in Wheeling … nothing.

When fans fly into Clarksburg’s Benedum Airport and stay in hotels from Flatwoods to Morgantown, that’s economic impact.

Mountaineer football, of course, is the biggest economic driver, comprising $193.9 million of the $302 million generated each year. The overall impact of WVU men’s basketball was estimated at $35.5 million for the 2017-18 season.

When someone pulls out that big case of beer for the morning tailgate party before a football game, that’s also economic impact.

Considering the athletic department’s significant financial role in the area economy, Lyons suggests it is vital for local and state leaders to continue to work together.

When you really think about it, it’s truly significant what West Virginia University Athletics means to the state’s economy on a yearly basis.

And Mountaineer sports’ impact spans far beyond Morgantown. When someone drives from Marietta, Ohio, to Morgantown to watch a West Virginia football game on a Saturday afternoon and then stops in Fairmont to eat dinner on their way home, that’s economic impact. When a fan from Columbus, Ohio, breaks up the long drive to do some shopping at The Highlands near Wheeling, that’s economic impact. When someone from Virginia pulls off Interstate 79 in Flatwoods to get gas on the way to Morgantown, that’s economic impact.

21

“This is not just athletics,” he noted. “This is the community of Morgantown and Monongalia County when we put on athletics events. We’re all in this together.”

MAC REPORT The Mountaineer Athletics Club (MAC) is the fundraising arm for the West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics pays 100% of the scholarships awarded to over 475 student-athletes in 18 varsity sports from generous contributions made by 6,500+ MAC Members. Those individual and corporate contributions help Advance Scholarship and Build Champions.

JULY 1, 2018 – JUNE 30, 2019

The cost of competing at the highest level and providing a first-class education for outstanding student-athletes continues to climb. The MAC must grow its membership and level of support in order to keep WVU as one of the nation’s premier athletics programs. Athletics is a window through which the University is often viewed, with its accomplishments serving

30,000,000

as a tremendous recruiting tool and a catalyst for philanthropy to all areas of WVU. Essential private support enables the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to recruit and train elite student-athletes in first-class facilities, fund scholarships and compete on a level playing field with peer institutions. Financial stability in athletics ultimately breeds success, and success breeds pride among WVU’s many alumni and friends.
