ROWING

Rowing is one of the original sports in the modern Olympic Games. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympics, was a rower. Rowers are third largest U.S. delegation (48 athletes) to the Olympic Games.

Rowing was the first intercollegiate sport contested in the United States. The first rowing race was between Harvard and Yale in 1852. The first rowing club in the U.S. was the Detroit Boat club, founded in 1839. The first amateur sport organization was a rowing club – Philadelphia’s Schuylkill Navy – founded in 1858.

From 1920 until 1956, the USA won the gold medal in the men’s eight at every Olympic Game. The first national governing body for a sport in the United States was rowing. Founded as the National Association for Amateur Oarsmen in 1872, it was changed in 1982 to the United States Rowing Association.

ROWING

ROWING 101 STERN COXSWAIN

(pronounced cox-n): Steers the boat and is the on-the-water coach and strategist for the crew. Must weigh at least 100 lbs. The coxswain may sit in the stern or lie in the bow of the shell.

The crew makes it look easy is most likely the crew doing the best job. The whole body is involved in moving the boat through the water. Although rowing tends to look like an upper body sport, the strength of the stroke comes from the legs. THE STROKE IS MADE UP OF FOUR PARTS: Catch, Drive, Finish and Recovery. At the catch, the athlete drops the oar blade vertically into the water. At the beginning of the drive, all the work is done by the legs. As the upper body begins to uncoil, the arms begin their work, drawing the oar blades through the water. Continuing the drive, the rowers move their hands quickly into the body. During the finish, the oar handle is moved down, drawing the oar blade out of the water. At the same time, the rower “feathers” the oar – turning the oar handle – so that the oar blade changes from a vertical position to a horizontal one. The oar remains out of the water as the rower begins recovery, moving the hands away from the body and past the knees. The body follows the hands and the sliding seat moves forward, until, knees bent, the rower is ready for the next catch.

Race times can vary considerably depending upon the course and weather conditions. Tailwinds improves times, while headwinds and crosswinds hampers them. Eights and fours are the most common collegiate competitions, and both events are held at the NCAA Championships. The plus sign indicates a coxswain. NOVICE: A rower who is new to the sport, and is in it’s the first year of collegiate competition. VARSITY: The collegiate rower who competes beyond the novice level. HEAD RACE: Head races are the traditional fall regatta, in which boats cross the starting line at full speed at roughly 15 second intervals. The course usually involves navigating three miles of river, around bends and under bridges. REGATTA: Regatta is the name of rowing events in which several crews compete.

RACING CATEGORIES: There are several different events at regattas. Typically, the Varsity 8+ event is the most elite, consisting of a team’s best eight rowers. A program’s overall speed is usually measured by how well its top 8+ finishes at a race.

ENGINE ROOM: Middle rowers in the boat. Generally the biggest and strongest rowers in the boat.

SHELL: A boat used in the rowing races. It seats nine people for an eight (eight rowers and a coxswain), and five people for a four (four rowers and a coxswain). It ranges in length from 45 feet for a four to 58 feet for an eight.

COXSWAIN (COX): Person who steers the shell from a seat located in the stern of an 8+ or a lying position in the bow of a 4+. The cox is also the on-the-water coach for the crew.

OAR: Used to drive the boat forward; rowers do not use paddles. SEAT NUMBER: Rower’s position in the boat that counts up from the bow. The person closest to the bow of the boat is the “bow,” followed by the 2, then 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and finally 8 or “stroke.” BOW: Rower closest to the front (or bow) of a multi-person shell, and the first part of the boat to cross the finish line.

BLADE: The end of the oar which pulls the boat through the water.

STROKE: The rower who sits closest to the stern. The stroke sets the rhythm for the boat; others behind her must follow his/her cadence. STERN: The rear of the boat; the direction the rowers are facing. POWER 10: A call for rowers to do 10 of their best, most powerful strokes. It’s a strategy used to pull ahead of a competitor.

RIGGER: The triangular shaped metal device that is bolted onto the side of the boat and holds the oars. WVURowing

ROWING

ROWING

TIPS

When watching a team row, look for good timing. See if all the oars and bodies are moving together. Technique and synchronization are the keys to being successful. Not only does each member have to do their part, but the crew must work in sync. All strokes must be simultaneous; one rower can make the difference for the entire crew if they do not work together. THE CREW MAKES IT LOOK EASY IS MOST LIKELY THE CREW DOING THE BEST JOB. HERE’S WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Continuous, fluid motion of rowers: all good rowers must have power to move the boat through the water, and must be in top physical condition. SYNCHRONIZATION: the bodies of the crew must move in unison. CLEAN CATCHES WITH THE BLADE: Watch to see if all crew members hit the catch together – and that all the oar blades enter the water at the same time. EVEN BLADEWORK: When the blades are brought out of the water, they should all move horizontally at the same height, just above the water.

6

MAINTAINING THE SPEED OF THE SHELL: The shells don’t move at a consistent speed (slowest at the catch, quickest at the release). A good crew times the catch at the right moment to maintain the speed of the shell. STROKE RATE: With each stroke, the crew is trying to make an excellent run (distance the shell goes in one stroke cycle). During the race, the number of strokes per minute will vary, from 42 to 50 at the start, 34 to 40 in the body and 38 to 42 at the finish. OTHER THINGS TO WATCH FOR:

»» In case of a false start, or broken equipment within the first 100 meters, competitors are called back. A boat responsible for two false starts are disqualified.

»» Boats must stay in their lanes, though there is no penalty for crossing the buoys so long as this does not hinder other competitors and the boat crosses the finish line in the judge’s view.

»» The course is followed by an umpire in a motorboat, who judges whether the competitors are following the rules. The boat that crosses the finish line first wins the race.

THE HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA,

A ROYAL FINISH Take five women who never rowed prior to college, give them an experienced coach and a boat, and this is the fairytale story of the West Virginia University rowing team. After a successful showing in the program’s debut season, the Varsity 4+ did something outstanding – qualify for rowing’s most prestigious event – the Henley Royal Regatta. When the four team of Tina Griffith, Rishi Kelley, Erin Nisbet, Noelle Dodge and coxswain Christine DeRienzo finished first at the Dad Vail Regatta, the nation’s largest collegiate race, the team was selected to represent the United States at the Henley. The Mountaineers were selected to attend the big race by the organizers of Dad Vail not only for their first-place finish, but also because they felt WVU had the best chance to win in England. The team was excited to travel to England and represent the state of West Virginia and the U.S. at such a prestigious international regatta. In the town of Henley, rowing is the premier sport and is the center of the town’s attention. “The town of Henley was great,” said former associate head coach Tina Griffith. “You didn’t have to explain to everyone what rowing was, like you do here. It is just one big mass of rowers and people who hold it in high regard. It was definitely a different feel.” The regatta began in 1839 and has been held each year since, except during the World Wars. It started as an afternoon event, but is now held over the course of five days with more than 500 teams competing in 17 events. Because the Henley Abegan before either the England Rowing Association or the International Rowing Federation were created, the Royal Regatta features a longer course and a different style of racing. The women’s course is one mile and 550 yards, which is slightly longer than the distance of a 2,000 meter course. The women only race one team at a time, with the winner advancing to the next round. “The race format is completely different here than it is in normal races,” Griffith said. “Here, you race in heats, like sprints in track, but there it was one-on-one, like a bracket. It was more personal, and you have to do a lot more racing. Each time it felt like there was more on the line, only one was surviving, not the top-three.” WVU’s four team started the competition strong, sailing through the first, second and third rounds, before eventually losing in the finals to Oxford Brookes University (England). Although, the team was eliminated, they broke the course record and made it further than any other team the Dad Vail committee had selected. “I was very grateful for the opportunity, and it was exciting, but it was mainly another opportunity to prove ourselves,” Griffith said. “To be honest, it really didn’t matter the competitor. We just wanted to race and win, and that is one big reason why I think we did so well.” Attending the Henley was a royal finish to the team’s Cinderella year and an experience they will never forget. The team not only made a mark in the program’s first season; they set the bar for future Mountaineers in seasons to come. WVURowing

“It’s very important that we are involved in the community because we are the beneficiaries of tremendous support on a myriad of levels,” - Coach Jimmy King.

IN THE

COMMUNITY

»» The West Virginia University rowing team works hard on the water to ensure that it represents the Old Gold and Blue in the best manner possible during competition. However, the Mountaineers also work hard to give back to those who make the city of Morgantown and the state of West Virginia a kind-hearted and good-natured community.

»» The Mountaineers are constantly involved in community service activities throughout the state. The team has a continuing relationship with Making Strides for Breast Cancer, the local Big Sister program, the Children’s Hospital and a recent bond with the local Girl Scouts was formed as well.

BOATHOUSE

The West Virginia University Boathouse is located in Morgantown’s Wharf District along the Monongahela River – only a two-minute walk from the WVU Visitors Center. Constructed in 2007 below the Caperton Trail, the attractive, climate-controlled facility houses the WVU Fleet that includes (5) eights, (3) fours, (4) pair/doubles and (3) singles. The facility also contains dressing facilities and locker room space for the athletes. In addition, the dock easily allows (3) eights to launch simultaneously. The Monongahela River, commonly referred to as “the Mon”, provides an idyllic rowing venue for the Mountaineers. A series of locks and dams along the Mon create a pooling effect so that a minimum navigable depth of nine feet is maintained yearround. The name Monongahela is derived from a Native American term loosely meaning “river of falling banks” and/or “river of high bluffs”. True to its name, the Mon flows well below its banks and is largely sheltered from prevailing winds by the surrounding bluffs. As such, the Mountaineers are often fortunate to train on calm water with little current. In the spring of 2009, WVU served host to Dayton, Duquense and George Mason in its first-ever spring regatta on the Mon. The race ended at the Edith Barill Riverfront Park in nearby Star City.

HEAD COACH

Jimmy King enters his 11th season at the helm of the West Virginia University rowing program. King has made tremendous strides with the team since taking over leadership responsibility during the 2007-08 season. In his tenure at West Virginia, King has coached 12 first-team all-conference performers, including 2018 All-Big 12 First Team honoree Carly Ledbetter and 2017 All-Big 12 First Team honoree Louisa Morgan. He has also had 60 student-athletes named CRCA (College Rowing Coaches of America) Scholar-Athletes, 118 Big 12 All-Academic Team members, including the reigning Big 12 ScholarAthlete of the year, Morgan.

AT WEST VIRGINIA 2017-18

West Virginia began their spring on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, New Jersey at the Cooper Sprints. Four Mountaineer boats competed in the opener – the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, and third varsity eight/novice. WVU would see its best finish of the day come during the Petite Final when the first varsity eight would take second place. The Mountaineers then traveled to Norfolk, Virginia to compete in Big 12 Duals, hosted by Old Dominion. In the event’s second year, WVU squared off against Texas and Oklahoma separately in six total races, battling the elements for most of the day. After two weeks off from competition, West Virginia continued its spring in Fairfax Station, Virginia at George Mason University. One of their stronger performances of the season, four Mountaineer boats led the way to two first-place and four second-place finishes. WVU’s two first-place finishes helped lead the Big 12 Conference to victory – its second straight – at the George Mason Invite, alongside conference foes Kansas and Old Dominion. Coming off a great showing at George Mason, the Mountaineers looked to build upon their success, as they traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to take on St. Joseph’s and Delaware to wrap up the regular season. WVU put together another solid performance, claiming three first-place finishes. Following a short trip back to Morgantown, West Virginia traveled to Oak Ridge, Tennessee for the Big 12 Championship. Claiming one first-place finish, the Mountaineers collected eight team points to finish eighth overall. Among Big 12 foes, WVU was fifth with 47 team points. Of note, junior Carly Ledbetter capped the season by being named to the All-Big 12 Rowing Team.

11th SEASON

AT WEST VIRGINIA 2016-17

The Mountaineers began off their spring season at the sixth annual Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, hosted by Louisville. Five Mountaineer boats competed in three sessions over the course of the two-day competition, the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, varsity four, and second varsity four. West Virginia then traveled to Washington D.C., where the Mountaineers took on Georgetown on the Potomac River. The Mountaineers’ second varsity eight boat were the highlight of the day as they overcame a slow start to best the Hoyas. Following a week off from competition, the Mountaineers traveled back to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for the inaugural Big 12 Duals on Melton Lake. The Mountaineers faced Big 12 affiliate members Alabama and Tennessee in separate dual races in five events. WVU continued its spring in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when they competed against Duquesne and Dayton. The Mountaineers had one of the strongest performances of the spring as they won two of three races against the Dukes and Flyers. The following day, the Mountaineers competed in the George Mason Invitational, where WVU won all three of its event finals to help the Big 12 Conference secure a victory. West Virginia wrapped up its regular season on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia with races against Temple and Delaware. The Mountaineers’ second varsity four crew won two races over the course of the day, as the second varsity eight also notched a victory. After a week off from competition, West Virginia then concluded its 2017 season at the Big 12 Rowing Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on May 1314. The Mountaineers won three Petite Finals as the second varsity eight, third varsity eight and first varsity four crews were able to claim victories. Among Big 12 foes, WVU was fifth with 49 team points.

AT WEST VIRGINIA 2015-16

The Mountaineers kicked off their spring season with a pair of dual races at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The two-day regatta was hosted by Louisville. West Virginia’s first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four crews competed in nine races on the 2,000-meter course. King’s success with the team was not only limited to the water, but the program also saw its second All-American, as senior Rachel Viglianco earned the honor twice. Viglianco was named the CoSIDA Capital One All-America Women’s At-Large Second Team, and to the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s All-America team. In addition, five rowers were honored by the CRCA as National Scholar-Athletes, with junior Shannon Gribbons named to the All Mid-Atlantic Region First Team. Gribbons became the first rower from WVU to earn this honor.

PRESIDENT » WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY E. GORDON GEE J.D., ED.D.

D

Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having served as president of some of the most prestigious public and private universities for more than three decades. When he returned to lead West Virginia University in 2014 as the institution’s 24th president, it was a homecoming of sorts. He was first named WVU president in 1981 at age 36 – at the time, among the youngest persons to ever serve as a university president. He led West Virginia University until 1985 when he went on to presidencies at the University of Colorado (1985-90), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-07). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990-97 and again from 2007-13. On his return to the Morgantown campus, he said, “This is not a job to me; it is a calling.” His leadership style bears that out as he works tirelessly to advance the University’s land-grant mission and open doors to the American dream. In one of his latest addresses to the University community, he noted that for 150 years, the institution has been a polar star guiding West Virginians toward a brighter tomorrow. He said, “That is why, in this milestone year, we recommit our University to living the values that drive our work. Serving our students and our state is not just our duty — it is our passion.” Gee has built a special relationship with the students as well as the state’s citizens, making it a point to visit students where they live, learn and socialize – and visiting all 55 West Virginia counties during his inaugural year – and at least half in subsequent years. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the WVU College of Law, and, in 1981, was named WVU’s 19th president. Gee has served on several education-governance organizations and committees, including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents, the Business Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Universities. He is past chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and formerly served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia invited him to join its international advisory board. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. Gee is currently serving as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee and is a member of Forward 50, an initiative working toward student equity, success and outcomes. Last summer, working with Department of Commerce and Marshall University officials, he was instrumental in establishing the West Virginia Forward initiative to bring together state and local leaders in providing a blueprint for alignment and focus on solutions for a united and prosperous West Virginia. It quickly developed into a larger effort with policymakers, experts and government officials working together to formulate results-driven policy to help strengthen and diversify all regions of the state. Active in many national professional and service organizations, he is on the executive committee of the National 4-H Council Board of Trustees as well as on the Board of Trustees of the Royal University for Women in Bahrain, with which West Virginia University has a long-standing academic partnership. A recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, he is an executive board member of Boy Scouts of America. He has also served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Limited Brands. In 2011, Gee began serving as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-12, Governor John Kasich asked him to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In December 2012, he began serving on the Columbus Education Commission.

72

Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions over the years. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of over a dozen books, including his two most recent, “Leading Colleges and Universities” and “Land-Grant Universities for the Future.” He has also authored many papers and articles on law and education. Gee is engaged to Laurie Erickson, leader of the Erickson Foundation. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health. In addition to that role, she is a practicing gynecologist and Gratis Faculty at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Dr. Rebekah Gee is married to David Patrón and they have five children.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SHANE LYONS ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT

I

In his fourth year as the director of athletics at West Virginia University, Shane Lyons has a clear vision for his athletic program. It’s a vision that focuses on the betterment of more than 500 student-athletes and the day-to-day needs that will help them succeed in the classroom and in competition. His open lines of communications have made him a popular role model for WVU athletes, and his honest, fair and caring approach has energized an entire department. Whether it’s regularly scheduled meetings with the student-athletes or his open-door office policy, Lyons has his finger on the pulse of his student-athletes, coaches and staff. His endless energy is devoted to his facilities master plan that will keep West Virginia a strong Power 5 institution and position his department for growth and continued success. Lyons’ facilities master plan isn’t about keeping up with the Joneses, it’s about taking what his department has, improving it and making it complete for the student-athlete. From training, nutrition, medica l and competitiveness, Lyons’ vision is for future success, building winning programs and enhancing the overall WVU student-athlete experience. Lyons is about results, and he has already left a great deal of accomplishments in his rear view mirror. He spearheaded and finished more than $100 million in fan enhancements to Milan Puskar Stadium and the WVU Coliseum, broke ground on a $45 million aquatic and track center in Morgantown, completed phase two of Coliseum renovations, bringing the arena up to current ADA seating code, and for the first-time ever, introduced a second video board to Milan Puskar Stadium to provide information and improve fan entertainment. Overseeing 18 varsity sports, a self-sustaining department budget of more than $93 million and 250 employees, Lyons’ leadership has also guided WVU to unparalleled success in the classroom as the department recorded an impressive overall 3.2 GPA in 2018. And, with the student-athlete in mind, he has implemented a Clinical and Sport Psychology unit with a full-time director and professional interns, added specialized learning assistants to the Student-Athlete Development unit and entered into a partnership with WVU Medicine’s Neuroscience Department to assist in the training and recovery of student-athletes, all emphasizing his overall commitment to the well-being and performance student-athletes. Ask him and he’ll tell you it’s not his department, but West Virginia’s department, and he can tell you his vision to improve it not only for the coming year, but for three, five, seven and 10 years down the road. He cares and the proof lies in what he has already accomplished in three years. Additionally, his work with WVU President E. Gordon Gee’s senior leadership team, as well as the Big 12 Conference and other national committees, has brought additional respect and positive exposure to his department and the University. He currently serves on the Big 12 Administration Committee, Finance and Budget Committee and the Game Management and Officiating Subcommittee. In 2018, he chaired the overall athletic directors committee for the Big 12, was named again to the NCAA Division I Council and will serve as chair of the NCAA Division I Football Oversite Committee. He is also on the board of directors for Mylan Park in Morgantown. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama where he worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership and direction of the Crimson Tide Athletic program. During his time at Alabama, his responsibilities included oversight of a $120 million budget, management of the day-to-day operations of the department and oversight of the Crimson Tide’s 21 sports teams. In addition, he played a pivotal role in a historic renegotiation of Alabama’s multimedia rights agreement that started in 2014 and was involved in several significant capital projects totaling more than $85 million. The Crimson Tide won seven national titles in five different sports during his time there – two in football, two in men’s golf, one in women’s golf, one in gymnastics and one in softball. He also played a critical role in the hiring of four Alabama head coaches. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in matters dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the senior administrative team for ACC events, including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and

operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units. Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of rules and interpretations for the 25 membership service representatives and was the staff liaison to various NCAA standing committees. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Lyons, the University’s 12th athletic director, and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have two children: Cameron and Brooke. Cameron is a member of Terry Bowden’s football team at Akron and Brooke plays volleyball at Morgantown High School.
