Director of Basketball Operations

Josh Eilert enters his 15th season with the West Virginia men’s basketball program. Eilert was named WVU’s director of basketball operations in July 2017 after he spent the first six seasons as the video coordinator and coordinator of basketball operations from 2013-17. For the 2016-17 season, Eilert served as interim assistant coach. During that time, Eilert was responsible for on-court scouting, off-campus recruiting and working with WVU’s wing players.
He came to WVU from Kansas State, where he served as a graduate assistant at Kansas State under Bob Huggins in 2006-07.
Since coming to West Virginia in 2007, the Mountaineers won the 2010 Big East Championship and have earned 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2010 Final Four and five NCAA Sweet 16s.
While at Kansas State, Eilert assisted the coaching staff with the day-today internal operations of the basketball program, including self-scout and opponent scouting, coordination of on-campus recruiting, film exchange, travel arrangements and special projects. Eilert also served as the assistant camp director of the Bob Huggins basketball camps. Prior to Kansas State, Eilert was a loan officer at Community National Bank in Seneca, Kansas.
Eilert played two seasons of basketball at Kansas State from 2002-04 after transferring from Cloud County Community College, where he was a two-year letterman and one-year starter. He was a first team all-Big 12 academic selection as a senior and four times was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Eilert was honored with the Keith Amerson Academic Award in 2004. While at Cloud County, he earned KJCAA Academic All-America honors as a sophomore.
A native of Osborne, Kansas, Eilert earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Kansas State in 2004. He earned his master’s degree in College Student Personnel/Intercollegiate Athletics from Kansas State in 2007.
Eilert and his wife, Brandi, reside in Morgantown. They have two sons, Brendan and Tristan, and a daughter, Emri.
JAY KUNTZ
Assistant to the Head Coach
Jay Kuntz, who has spent 13 years with the Mountaineer basketball program, was named assistant to the head coach in July 2017 after serving as coordinator of player development from 2015-17. Kuntz spent three years as a graduate assistant in men’s basketball and was a four-year student manager from 200812. He also served as an assistant camp director for the Bob Huggins Basketball Camps and coordinated the men’s basketball manager staff of 16 individuals.
In his current role at WVU, Kuntz will assist with the coordination of on-campus recruiting activities, organize community outreach activities, assist in film and on-court analysis for player development and serve as the liaison to the academic services unit.
A native of Wallingford, Connecticut, Kuntz graduated from WVU in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary studies and earned a master’s degree from WVU in athletic coaching education in 2014.
Kuntz has one son, Jaxton.
TYLER CHENG
Athletic Data Statistician for Men’s Basketball
Tyler Cheng was named the athletic data statistician for WVU men’s basketball in July 2019 after serving as a program assistant for one season.
No stranger to WVU basketball, Cheng enters his eighth season on the WVU basketball staff after serving four years as a graduate assistant, head manager and
student manager.
A native of London, Ontario, Cheng graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in business management and organizational studies and a specialization in accounting.
At WVU, he earned a master’s degree in athletic coaching education in 2016 and a master’s degree in public administration in 2018.
In addition to WVU, Cheng’s basketball experience includes serving as an associate coach at Fanshawe College (2013-14), head coach of the Ontario Talent Identification & Development Program U16 boys basketball summer team (2013-14), head coach STA high school boys’ basketball (2012-14), head coach Gold Medal Club boys’ basketball (2008-14) and as a carded basketball referee for the London Board of Basketball Officials (2006-12).
RYAN MCINTYRE
Video Coordinator
Ryan McIntyre, who served as a head student manager for WVU men’s basketball in 2015-16, returned to the Mountaineer basketball program in July 2019 as video coordinator. Prior to returning to West Virginia, McIntyre served as director of basketball operations at Austin Peay for two seasons, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, coordinating travel schedules, assisting in community service initiatives, overseeing student managers, serving as director of video services and basketball camps.
A native of Fairfax, Virginia, McIntyre is a 2016 graduate of West Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in athletic coaching education. In addition to his one season as head student manager for coach Bob Huggins, McIntyre served as a student manager for two seasons and a student administrative assistant for one season.
Following graduation, McIntyre was a graduate assistant manager at South Carolina for coach Frank Martin, helping the Gamecocks to the program’s first Final Four in 2016-17.
In addition to the Bob Huggins Basketball Camps, McIntyre has worked numerous basketball camps. He served on camp staffs for Frank Martin (South Carolina), Matt Figger (Austin Peay), Mark Turgeon (Maryland), Shaka Smart (VCU), John Thompson III (Georgetown), Josh Pastner (Memphis), Fred Hoiberg (Iowa State) and John Groce (Illinois).
TRENT MICHAELS
Graduate Assistant
Trent Michaels enters his first season as a graduate on the Mountaineer basketball staff. Previously, he spent four years as a manager, including his final two years as a head manager.
The native of Pittsburgh graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He is pursuing a master’s degree in athletic coaching education from WVU.
RANDY MEADOR
Assistant Athletics Director/Head Basketball Trainer
Randy Meador is a member of the athletic training staff, primarily working with the Mountaineer basketball team. As assistant athletics director/head trainer for Olympic sports, he oversees various administrative tasks in the athletic training area.
Meador has served 36 seasons as West Virginia’s head basketball athletic trainer. He formerly served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer with the West Virginia football and basketball teams. He was appointed to his present position in July 1985.
A respected member of the athletic training community, Meador was named West Virginia Athletic Trainers Association Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2003, was the recipient of the Mountaineer Touchdown Club Curbstone Coach award in 2003, was named the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer in 2011 and most received the National Athletic Trainers’ Association’s 2014 Athletic Trainer Service Award.
In May 2019, Meador, MS, ATC, was inducted into the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association (MAATA) Hall of Fame. In 2021, he was inducted into the West Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association (WVATA) Hall of Fame.
A native of Oxford, Ohio, Meador earned a bachelor’s degree from Miami (Ohio), in 1984, where he served as an athletic training student for four years.
He earned a master’s degree in athletic training from West Virginia in 1985. In addition to his athletic duties, Meador serves as a lecturer in the highly acclaimed athletic training curriculum of the WVU School of Physical Education. He was president (199093) of the West Virginia Athletic Trainers Association.
Meador and his wife, the former Bev Day of Cincinnati, have two sons, Luke, a WVU graduate, and Eli.
SHAUN BROWN
Strength and Conditioning Coach, Men’s Basketball
Shaun Brown joined the Mountaineer men’s basketball staff in May 2018 as strength and conditioning coach.
He came to West Virginia from Minnesota, where he served as the strength and conditioning coach for the Golden Gophers men’s basketball team for five years.
Prior to Minnesota, Brown spent three seasons overseeing the strength and conditioning program at USC from 2010-13 and three years at Virginia from 2006-09.
Brown worked eight years in the professional ranks, serving as the head strength coach for the NBA’s Toronto Raptors from 2003-06 and six seasons as head strength coach for the Boston Celtics from 1997-2003.
Brown has worked with 22 players who were selected in the NBA Draft, including lottery picks Jamal Mashburn, Ron Mercer and Antoine Walker. He has worked with eight NBA All-Stars, including Kenny Anderson, Chris Bosh, Vince Carter, Jamaal Magloire, Paul Pierce, Jalen Rose, Mashburn and Walker. Brown has also mentored seven former assistant strength coaches who have worked at Power 5 schools or in the NBA.
From 1992-97, Brown was the head strength coach for the men’s basketball team at Kentucky. During his time with the Wildcats, Kentucky participated in three Final Fours and won the 1996 NCAA Championship.
Brown served as the head strength coach at Providence from 1989-92. Before that, he was an assistant strength coach at Rutgers.
Brown earned a bachelor’s degree from Canisius in 1987 and a master’s degree from Ohio State in 1988. He served as a graduate assistant strength coach at Ohio State and as a strength and conditioning coach at Dublin HS (Ohio) from 1988-89.
DR. A.J. MONSEAU
Medical Director/ Head Team Physician
A.J. Monseau, M.D., WVU Medicine Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine physician, has been the head team physician and medical director for WVU Athletics since 2017.
In 2016, Dr. Monseau served as the team physician for WVU Men’s Basketball. He also served as team physician for USA Wrestling at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
As head team physician and medical director for WVU Athletics, Monseau leads the University’s staff of team physicians and works in conjunction with the athletic training staff to provide healthcare to all student-athletes. This includes injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, education, and counseling.
Originally from the Northern Panhandle, Monseau received his medical degree from and completed his residency training at the WVU School of Medicine. He then completed fellowship training in primary care sports medicine at the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He returned to his alma mater upon completion of his fellowship in 2011.
Currently, Monseau is an associate professor in the WVU Department of Emergency Medicine. In addition to working as an attending physician in the J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital Emergency Department, he also sees sports medicine patients through WVU Medicine Orthopaedics. He is board certified in emergency medicine and primary care sports medicine.
Athletics have always been a part of Monseau’s life. After completing a threesport career at Wheeling Park High School, Monseau carried his love of sports through his undergraduate education, during which he competed on the West Liberty University (then West Liberty State College) wrestling team for his father, who is a National Wrestling Hall of Fame coach. Though he gave up competing when he began medical school, he made sure to choose a specialty that would allow him to remain connected to competitive sports.
DR. B.J. BALCIK
Team Physician
Dr. B.J. Balcik has served as a team physician for WVU men’s basketball since 2017. Originally from Ohio, Balcik received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Wright State University in 2011 and completed his residency training in emergency medicine at the WVU School of Medicine in 2014. He then completed fellowship training in primary care sports medicine at the University of Arizona.
He returned to WVU to start his career as a member of the faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine at WVU. Balcik earned the Resident Research Award in 2014, the WVU Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty of the Year in 2018 and Outstanding Research Mentor from the WVU Department of Emergency Medicine in 2018-19.
STEPHANIE WHITE
Assistant Athletics Director, StudentAthlete Development and Enhancement
Stephanie White was elevated to Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development in September 2016, after serving in various positions within Academic Services since February 2008.
In her current role, White has administrative responsibility for the Coliseum Academic Performance Center, serving over 350 Olympic sport student-athletes across 17 teams. She supervises and has helped create and implement the Office of Student-Athlete Enhancement, which includes NCAA Life Skills, community service, SAAC, summer bridge and a freshman seminar course.
White and her team have developed and implemented a program for learning evaluation and support for at-risk student-athletes. This team not only includes the full-time and part-time learning specialists, but also student-athlete tutoring program.
In addition to her supervisory duties, she is responsible for the day-to-day academic services for the men’s basketball, volleyball and golf programs. White has also advised the women’s basketball, women’s soccer and men’s soccer teams throughout her time at WVU.
White assists student-athletes in their respective plan of study through coordinating class schedules, offering regularly scheduled advising meetings, arranging for tutors and monitoring study time. With the ultimate goal of graduation for each student-athlete, she remains familiar with NCAA rules relating to continuing eligibility. Her advising duties also include meeting with prospective student-athletes, and helping incoming student-athletes with admission, class registration and initial eligibility requirements.
Prior to WVU, White was a full-time teacher at the Mason County Career Center in Point Pleasant, West Virginia., from January 2004-June 2007. She also has experience with WVU as a graduate teaching assistant, student athlete mentor and temporary educational counselor.
White earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from West Virginia in 2002 and a master’s degree in secondary education from WVU in 2003.
A member of the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals and Women Leaders in College Sports, White attended the Institute for Leadership Enhancement in 2020.
White and her husband, Jason, have one daughter, Aubrey.
KYLE KEESLER Equipment Manager
Kyle Keesler began his role as assistant equipment manager in 2015 and was promoted to equipment manager in June 2019. He helps with the day-to-day equipment operations for men’s and women’s basketball and he also oversees the baseball team’s daily equipment needs.
Prior to his full-time stint at WVU, Keesler served as the head clubhouse manager for the West Virginia Black Bears, the short-season A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. While in that capacity, he handled day-to-day operations including daily transportation for players and staff, ordering team meals, and issuing officially licensed game day and workout gear. Additionally, he handled laundry for both the visiting and home teams.
Keesler served as the head women’s basketball manager for WVU women’s basketball for five seasons. He handled daily practice and game operations and assisted with office duties. He traveled with the team and helped organize equipment, uniforms and other needs for road contests. He assisted the graduate assistant with mail outs, data entry and recruiting visits. Keesler served as the Mountaineers’ equipment room liaison helping issue gear, laundry and other needs.
A native of Grantsville, West Virginia, Keesler resides in Morgantown with his wife, Judy, and daughter, Myla.
BRYAN MESSERLY
Associate Athletics Director/ Communications
As West Virginia University’s Associate Athletics Director for Communications, Bryan Messerly manages the day-to-day responsibilities of the WVU Athletics Communications Office. Messerly directs, plans and implements WVU’s media relations and publicity through social media and news media for WVU’s intercollegiate athletic program. He is the primary communications contact for the Mountaineer men’s basketball and golf teams.
Messerly is in his 28th year with WVU’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. He is in his 22nd season serving as the men’s basketball publicist and 15th year of directing the WVU Athletics Communications Office.
In his 21 years with the men’s basketball team, the Mountaineers have made 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, including two NCAA Elite Eight appearances, seven NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, the 2010 NCAA Final Four and captured the 2010 Big East Championship title. During that time, WVU has appeared in four National Invitation Tournaments, including an NIT title in 2007.
WVU has had 32 basketball players earn all-conference honors during Messerly’s tenure, including 11 first-team selections (Big East and Big 12). Messerly has coordinated the promotion of six basketball All-Americans: In 2006, Kevin Pittsnogle became WVU’s first men’s basketball All-American since 1972. Da’Sean Butler earned All-America honors in 2010, Kevin Jones did so in 2012, Juwan Staten in 2015, Jevon Carter in 2018 and Derek Culver in 2021.
Messerly has also promoted four first team Academic All-Americans, including two Academic All-Americans of the Year for men’s basketball (Johannes Herber, 2006 and Jevon Carter, 2018). He oversaw the publicity efforts for Butler winning the 2010 Senior CLASS Award, and Jevon Carter winning the NABC Defensive Player of the Year (twice), Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year (twice), Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and the men’s basketball Senior CLASS Award.
Prior to his current role, Messerly spent seven years (2000-07) as WVU’s associate sports information director following a three-year stint as assistant sports information director at Virginia Tech (1997-2000).
At Virginia Tech, he was the primary contact for the men’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling, swimming & diving and softball teams, and was the secondary contact for the football team that played in the 2000 BCS National Championship. Messerly coordinated the publicity for the Michael Vick Heisman campaign and accompanied Vick to the 1999 Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York. Also at Tech, Messerly was the media coordinator for the 1999 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship, the 1998 NCAA East Region Women’s Tennis Championship and was the assistant media coordinator for the 1999 NCAA East Regional Women’s Basketball tournament.
A Weirton, West Virginia, native, Messerly worked in WVU’s Athletic Communications Office as a graduate assistant from 1995-97, and as a student assistant from 1991-95. He was the contact for the 1996 and 1997 NCAA national champion rifle team and assisted with the publicity efforts for the 1996 Big East champion baseball team. Messerly also served as the publicity contact for wrestling, men’s and women’s track & field and men’s and women’s cross country.

Messerly is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), United States Basketball Writers Association, WVU’s all-time sports committee and the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. He is on the selection committee of the Naismith Basketball’s Hall of Fame for the Jerry West Outstanding Shooting Guard Award, given annually to the top shooting guard in college basketball.
Messerly has been the editor or co-editor of more than 40 publications that have been awarded national or district recognition from CoSIDA, including several that were tabbed as best in the nation. He has earned several awards of excellence regionally and nationally for writing by CoSIDA.
Messerly earned two degrees from WVU: a bachelor’s degree in business administration/finance in 1995 and a master’s degree in sport management in 1997. He was the recipient of the Sears Directors’ Cup Postgraduate Scholarship Award in 1996.
He and his wife, April, who is WVU’s Senior Associate Athletics Director for Capital Projects, Facilities and Event Management, have a son, Judd, and a daughter, Carper.
