A MESSAGE FROM WREN BAKER
VICE PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
It has certainly been a whirlwind eight months for me as your vice president and director of athletics.
As busy as it has been, let me say again how honored I am to be at West Virginia University guiding the athletics department for West Virginia’s land grant institution. I have traveled the state, seen its beauty, met some of the nicest people in the world and learned exactly why it is called Almost Heaven.
My family and I have been welcomed with open arms, and the transition for us has gone well because of the great people of this state and for that, I cannot thank you enough.
Before I came on board in December and really got going full-time in January, women’s soccer had already won the Big 12 Championship, and I quickly learned of the strong program that Nikki Izzo-Brown has built. That momentum carried over into basketball season as the men’s and women’s teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
The conclusion of basketball opened the door for one of, if not, the greatest baseball regular seasons in Mountaineer history. Coach Randy Mazey led his squad to a school-record tying 40 wins and a share of the Big 12 regular season championship. JJ Wetherholt was one of the best players in the nation, earning unanimous All-America honors and being named Big 12 Player of the Year.
Speaking of outstanding performances, track and cross country star Ceili McCabe is well on her way to becoming one of the greatest runners in WVU history. McCabe once again this year brought home three All-America honors in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. For the second year in a row, she was WVU’s top female award winner, but the best news is that she is only a junior and will be back for her senior year.
Those teams and student-athletes mentioned above will certainly be highlighted more in the upcoming pages of this 2022-23 Annual Report. As I bring you my first year-ending report as your director of athletics, I would like to point out some numbers that stand out.
For the year, WVU qualified seven teams for the NCAA postseason, 20 more student-athletes qualified individually and three teams (women’s soccer, rifle and baseball) won conference championships. We had 19 student-athletes take home All-America honors, while 73 earned all-conference recognition.
On the academic side, our performance was strong again. Seven studentathletes were named Academic All-Americans, including Wetherholt, who not only earned the honors on the field but also in the classroom. More than 340 athletes made the Big 12 honor roll, and our APR scores and graduation rates continued to excel.
Overall, it was a successful year, and I hope you enjoy reading about all the accomplishments in the upcoming pages. I know I am ready for my first full year of Mountaineer athletics. I can’t wait to see the color and pageantry of Mountaineer football and again appreciate all the hard work that our more than 500 student-athletes put in to represent WVU and the state of West Virginia.
I will say again how happy I am to be at West Virginia University and to be your director of athletics. Enjoy the 2023 Annual Report and then let’s get focused for the new season. It will be a good one.
Let’s
Wren Baker Vice President Director of Athletics. West Virginia University

2022 BIG 12 CHAMPIONS
WVU POSTS RECORD-HIGH APR
West Virginia University’s varsity athletic teams posted a combined Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 990 according to data released May 2 by the NCAA. The 990 score is WVU’s highest score for the 19 years of the NCAA Academic Performance Program.
WVU’s average APR score of 990 is six points higher than the NCAA’s overall four-year APR average score of 984. WVU’s score improved one point from last year, five points from three years ago and 16 points from eight years ago.
“The record-high average score of 990 for our teams is a testament to our studentathletes, our academic student-athlete development unit as well as our coaching and support staffs,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. “I would like to congratulate our rifle, rowing and tennis teams for their perfect four-year scores. We all should be proud of the high level of academic success with our student-athletes and their commitment to West Virginia University.”

The APR is based upon eligibility and retention of student-athletes on a semester-by-semester basis and is an assessment of real-time academic success. The results of the fall and spring semesters in a given year are calculated as that year’s APR score and averaged with the respective scores from the previous three years to provide a four-year (multi-year) snapshot of academic achievement.
Any student-athlete receiving athletic aid in a varsity sport can earn up to four points per year for being academically eligible and remaining enrolled in the institution. A team’s APR is the total points earned on the roster divided by that squad’s total possible points, multiplied by 1,000.
Teams must achieve a 930 multiyear APR to avoid immediate penalties (involving the possible reduction of practice time and access to postseason competition). Those elements of the NCAA Division I APR remain suspended through spring 2023.
The current multi-year APR scores for WVU’s varsity teams (2018-19 to 202122): baseball 974; men’s basketball 989; women’s basketball 990; cross country 996; football 977; golf 984; gymnastics 995; rifle 1,000; rowing 1,000; men’s soccer 985; women’s soccer 991; men’s swimming and diving 998; women’s swimming and diving 995; tennis 1,000; track and field 995; volleyball 994; and wrestling 965.

BAKER BECOMES WVU’S 13TH DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Wren Baker was officially introduced as West Virginia University’s 13th director of athletics on Dec. 5, 2022.
In making the announcement, West Virginia University president E. Gordon Gee listed some of the qualities he was seeking in WVU’s new AD.
“We wanted someone who embraced new opportunities, a strategic risk taker and someone who thinks differently, but we also wanted someone who would fit within our culture at West Virginia University,” Gee said.
“Why West Virginia University? I love the role the University plays within the state and its people,” Baker said. “I love its roots as a land-grant institution. I love that we’re nationally known for providing an elite education as evidence by our R1 research rating while providing access to all West Virginians.
“I love the passion that this entire state has for the Mountaineers. It is special and unique and something I’m excited to be a part of and something I will not take for granted,” Baker said.

“Everyone I’ve talked to who has lived here, spent time here or visited said what a great place (Morgantown) is to raise a family and that’s important.”
Baker indicated the student-athlete experience will be his top priority.
“We will do everything we can to give the best experience possible because that’s what they deserve,” he said. “We will build them into champions, leaders and, most importantly, graduates during their time here.”
Baker noted that small details will be important in West Virginia University’s athletics department moving forward.
“Little things lead to big things and attention to those details require a commitment to excellence that is critical in building and sustaining winning programs,” he said. “We will win with people, and we will place a high priority on their growth and their success.”
At North Texas, seven different teams combined to win 17 conference or division championships during Baker’s tenure there, including the 2019 academic year when every team achieved a winning record for the first time in school history.
His new coaching hires at North Texas have combined to win nearly 70% of their games; the studentathlete academic success includes a cumulative 3.206 grade point average and four straight years of recordsetting Graduation Success Rate records.
As a fundraiser, Baker’s hard work produced the five largest gifts in UNT history and a doubling of the school’s single-year record for fundraising. His efforts in external affairs saw football attendance increase by 71% and men’s and women’s basketball attendance boost its crowds by more than 60%.
His five-year strategic plan there included a new 20-year facilities master plan, as well as lucrative contracts for multi-media rights, licensing, apparel and equipment.
Baker is originally from Valliant, Oklahoma, and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2001.
His master’s degree came from Oklahoma State in 2003 when he was a member of Eddie Sutton’s men’s basketball staff. Baker’s professional experience includes stints at Missouri, where he was deputy director of athletics, Memphis, where he served a similar role, and a three-year tenure as athletic director at NCAA Division II power Northwest Missouri State.
Baker became the first AD outside of WVU’s orbit since Big 8 conference assistant commissioner Dick Martin was hired to oversee the Mountaineer program in 1978.
Baker’s wife, Heather, grew up in Bokchito, Oklahoma, and they have two daughters, Addisyn and Reagan.

NEW COLISEUM CLUB AREA UNDER CONSTRUCTION
A new premium area for Mountaineer Athletic Club members is in the works on the concourse level of the WVU Coliseum.
Although not yet officially named, Club Mountaineer or the “Apron Club” as it is sometimes being called, is a joint venture with West Virginia University Intercollegiate Athletics and Sodexo Operations to provide more premium space for Mountaineer Athletic Club members at the WVU Coliseum.
It will also serve as the daily training table area for all Mountaineer student athletes, except football, and can be used as a banquet and hospitality area.
Simon Dover, executive senior associate athletics director and chief financial officer for Mountaineer athletics, said the current project is a culmination of three year’s-worth of planning. Dover and Stephen Miller, Sodexo’s vice president of operations, began exploring ways to strengthen their relationship following Sodexo’s $3.25 million investment in the new football training table area at the Milan Puskar Center.
What came out of that was the decision to take an existing concession area on the concourse of the WVU Coliseum and turn it into a third premium club space.
Dover and Steve Uryasz, WVU’s deputy director of athletics, mapped out what they envisioned for the area with general contractor March Westin, and the two worked closely with Sodexo and architect XC Studio to come up with a design. XC Studio is a boutique and design studio located in Boise, Idaho, that focuses on hospitality projects for higher education, healthcare and sports facilities.
Then, COVID hit in the spring of 2020 and the project had to be put on hold. Current WVU director of athletics Wren Baker signed off on the plan shortly after taking over, and today, construction work is underway with the hope of having the facility operational sometime this fall for the men’s and women’s basketball seasons.
Sodexo is making a $7 million investment in the new facility and has permitted athletics to go out and sell naming rights for the venue. Athletics is reciprocating by extending its current deal with Sodexo and has also agreed to cover any additional construction costs above the $7 million Sodexo has committed to the project.
At the beginning of the fall semester, student-athletes will be required to eat in a temporary area in the Coliseum until the project is completed.
“It’s debt service that, in effect, is kept off our books,” Dover pointed out. “It’s a creative way of doing things. If we can keep debt service off our books and enhance our facilities, it’s a win-win for us.”
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS 16 WVUSPORTS.COM
This is the latest improvement to a 53-year-old facility that has undergone several much-needed refurbishments since West Virginia joined the Big 12 Conference in 2012.
Last year, Club 35 opened for premium MAC members on the Coliseum floor in the area where the old weight room once existed. The new facility under construction on the concourse will be much larger and will have an outside entrance, meaning MAC members can stick around after games to listen to the postgame radio show or watch other games while waiting for traffic to dissipate.
“In a span of two years, Club 35 opening this past season, and this club opening next year now gives MAC more areas to sell and for our donors to congregate,” Dover said. “We can also have banquets in there, and our student-athletes are going to have an excellent area for meals. It’s a three-fold facility: a training table, a banquet center and a donor area.”
“We’ve already seen positive response with Club 35 and people very much desiring to be able to get in there, and we anticipate similar demand for this as well,” Baker said recently. “It will not require as much of a donation and there will be more volume in the space, so I’m excited about its potential.
“It will be a great place for our development staff to be able to prospect and bring guests and families hopefully to grow our support base,” Baker added. “These kinds of premium opportunities are important for a lot of reasons.”
Student-athletes who eat between eight-to-10 training table meals a week are now going to have a first-class facility on par with the one Sodexo built at Milan Puskar Stadium, and the banquet and reception area planned for Club Mountaineer will be significantly larger than what is currently available in the Diversified Energy Terrace above the North end zone at Milan Puskar Stadium.
With the ability to accommodate as many as 350 to 400 people, the new club will actually become one of the largest venues in Morgantown to host banquets, birthday parties, weddings and other special events.
This potentially opens new doors for athletics to generate additional revenue throughout the year. Conceivably, a birthday party or a wedding reception might include a pre-recorded message from a coach or Tony Caridi on the Coliseum message board, or perhaps even court access including the usage of the carpet the team runs out onto during pregame introductions.
“For us to staff these types of events won’t be cheap,” Baker noted, “but it will offer someone a really special birthday party or a wedding reception. Imagine if we can roll out the carpet downstairs and that was part of the experience. It just opens avenues to be able to do some really neat things.”
Dover notes the new facility will have plenty of parking options.
Aesthetically, the new club will be a significant improvement to the Coliseum and will be visible from Monongahela Boulevard. Dover points out it will also reduce the amount of square footage needed to be addressed on the Coliseum apron.
Baker sees non-direct benefits to this as well.
“Just getting people here and getting them in our basketball arena (has value),” he explained. “How many people at a wedding reception or birthday party maybe haven’t been in the Coliseum for however long and aren’t aware of the renovations that have been made recently? You never know when that becomes an opportunity to get one more season ticket holder or one more MAC member.”
Club Mountaineer falls in line with Baker’s vision of creating new and unique revenue streams for Mountaineer athletics.
“If we can bring this online and not eat into any of our cashflow, then it will be a positive,” Baker said. “I’ve talked a lot about us finding ways to move up the pecking order in terms of our budget within the league and every way that we can do that helps.”
He continued.
“We want to grow our budget by millions of dollars, but if we can come up with eight to 10 ideas that generate $100,000, that’s how you get started. If there were all these million-dollar ideas out there, we would already be doing them.
“We’ve got to find ways to make sure our athletics facilities are used to generate revenue other than just the handful of days when we have games in them,” Baker concluded.
April Messerly, senior associate athletics director for capital projects, facilities and events management, is overseeing the project for the department.
