The Mountaineers record a new team 54-hole low round and total versus par at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic with a 273-273280=826 for 26-under-par, besting the previous records of 835 (Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic, 2018-19) and -22 (Janney VCU Shootout, 2017-18).
Mark Goetz became WVU’s first-ever individual qualifier for the NCAA Regional Championship. He finished second, just missing a spot in the NCAA Golf Championship. After the season, he became the first WVU golfer to earn All-America honors.
WVU won the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate with a 28-under-par tally, the lowest 54-hole, under-par score in school history. The Conference currently conducts postseason championships for 22 of its 23 sports with the Football Championship Game returning in 2017 after a six-year absence. Each championship helps to determine teams and/ or individuals that will represent the Conference in national postseason Thecompetition.Conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.
The award-winning Big 12 Champions for Life, an initiative of the Conference, begins its eighth year in 2022-23. It features current and former student-athletes, selected by league institutions, in a series of public service announcements highlighting the positive impact an athletics scholarship has had on their lives leading to stories of personal growth and success. During the 2021-22 athletics season, an all-time high eight national titles were won by teams that compete under the Big 12 banner. Additionally, six teams finished as runners-up in their respective national championships while 15 student-athletes brought home individual titles. Kansas won the Conference’s second-consecutive and third overall men’s basketball crown. Baylor was the 2021 champion while Kansas also won in 2008. Oklahoma collected its and the league’s fifth gymnastics national championship. Texas brought home the Big 12’s first NCAA title in men’s indoor track & field while Oklahoma State earned the league’s second trophy in Equestrian. Four titles were added to the ledger in the spring season with Texas capturing its second-consecutive championships in women’s tennis and rowing. The Longhorns also won the Big 12’s seventh men’s golf crown. Oklahoma snagged its second straight and sixth overall softball national title. The Big 12 has the best bowl win percentage of any conference over the last two seasons (.833). The Conference placed 70 percent of teams in 2021 bowl games for the first time since 2018, and had seven bowl squads for the 18th season out of the last 23. Baylor and Oklahoma State played in and won CFP New Year’s Six Bowls to give the Big 12 two teams in the postseason structure for the sixth time in its eight years From 2017-19, Oklahoma made three straight CFP semifinal appearances and has made four since 2015. The Big 12 sponsors 23 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis and volleyball. Big 12 institutions create a league that encompasses five states and nearly 38 million people. Nearly 5,000 student-athletes from across the United States and around the World compete annually in the sports sponsored by the Conference.

The Big 12 enters its 27th year as one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of new commissioner Brett Yormark.
TCU and West Virginia joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12’s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. Beginning on July 1, 2023, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston will become Themembers.Conference’s hard work ethic and strong values have translated to enormous success in its first 26 years. Since it began competition in 1996-97, the league can boast of 77 NCAA team titles and 718 individual national championships. The Big 12 has been at the forefront in college athletics reform, specifically with student-athlete welfare issues to include cost of attendance, student-athlete time demands and strengthening its policy for concussion diagnosis and management. In 2014-15, the Big 12 introduced and hosted three “State of Collegiate Athletics” forums to examine the issues facing college athletics. Two were conducted in Washington, D.C. and one in New York City. Panelists included respected authorities from intercollegiate athletics, university leadership and sports journalism. The third forum featured a special session comprised of student-athletes. The Big 12 continued the “State of Collegiate Athletics” forums with Dallas serving as the host site for three events and one staged in Atlanta.

SERVICE AND LEARNING The Center for Service and Learning develops and organizes service learning and volunteer opportunities for students and faculty. WVU earned the Carnegie Foundation’s Community Engagement Classification — joining only six percent of all universities. It is the only institution in West Virginia the foundation recognizes for its community engagement.

Our test-optional policy means that students can apply for undergraduate admission without an ACT or SAT score. However, we do encourage that students submit scores if available and offer the option to submit after receiving a decision. WVU superscores and offers multiple options for submitting test scores. Applications are processed beginning Aug. 15 for admission the following fall. WVU has a rolling admissions policy, and there is no official application deadline. For graduate admission, each graduate program sets its own admissions requirements and deadlines.

WVU Potomac State College in Keyser has one of the lowest tuition rates of all the nation’s four-year institutions. Offering more than 65 majors, this campus combines the personal attention of a small college with the affordable benefits of a major university.

Sean Covich was named West Virginia university’s 12th men’s golf coach on May 22, 2014 and has led the Mountaineers through the reintroduction of the sport and into a new era last season, West Virginia won the lake las Vegas intercollegiate with a 28-under-par tally, the lowest 54-hole, under-par score in school history the 271 in the final round at Vegas tied the lowest round team total in school history and the 17-under-par tally in the final round was the lowest round in school history in relation to par Mark Goetz won the lake las Vegas intercollegiate and Mountain eer invitational for his second and third collegiate tournament wins, the most in school history Max Green was co-champion of the east Carolina inter collegiate, becoming the third different Mountain eer to win a collegiate tournament In 2020-21 despite the abbreviated season due to the CoViD-19 pandemic, Goetz became WVU’s first-ever individual qualifier for the NCAA Regional Championship. Goetz then was the stroke-play medalist out of 312 golfers at the 121st u�S� Amateur at oakmont Country Club, shooting 8-under-par The Mountaineers finished the 2020-21 season on a strong note for the third year in a row, West Virginia won the Mountaineer invitational with Goetz being the only golfer in the field to shoot under par (-12) WVu’s four-day total at the Big 12 Championship tied WVu’s best 72-hole total at the championship, including a 283 in the third round, one shot off its best round in a Big 12 event Also in the spring, WVu shot a 10-under-par 278 at the Seminole intercollegiate, the eighth-best round in school history and posted the lowest team score in the three years of competing at the Gators invitational Building upon momentum from the team’s first nCAA appearance since 1947 the previous season, Covich’s Mountaineers earned the program’s first-ever top-25 ranking in 2019-20, coming in at No. 25 in the first Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll of the season
One week shy of the fifth anniversary of his hiring, Covich led West Virginia to its first NCAA appear ance in 72 seasons� Sharpstene, Sear, etienne Pap ineau, logan Perkins and Philipp Matlari represent ed West Virginia in louisville, along with alternate Mark Goetz the Mountaineers found themselves in contention for a national championship bid early on, as they finished the first day in fifth place after Perkins led the way at one-under-par the team slipped to eighth on the second day but rallied in the third round� After bouncing in and out of the top five throughout the day, WVU finished just two strokes out of contention, taking sixth place at the tregional�houghthe season ended, the historical reper cussions did not. Sharpstene became the first Mountaineer on record to earn Division i PinG Midwest All-region team accolades in May three more Mountaineers were honored in July as Sear, Papineau and Matlari were named to the GCAA Scholar All-America teams for their play on the course and work in the classroom Additionally, West Virginia earned team academic honors for the third straight season� tasked with rebuilding a program from scratch, Covich put together a team that saw success in its return to the links the 2017-18 season ended with the program’s first-ever top-100 ranking for the Mountaineers, as they finished the season at No. 90 out of 300 nCAA Division i Programs

At the end of April, West Virginia welcomed the league’s nine other programs to the old White tPC in White Sulphur Springs as the Mountain eers played host to the 2019 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship at the Greenbrier resort Despite a soggy start, sophomore Matthew Sharpstene led the way for WVU with a 13th-place finish at the historic resort History was then made on May 1, 2019� the team gathered at the WVu Coliseum at 9 p m to await its fate as the top-50 national ranking all but guaranteed the Mountaineers a spot in an nCAA regional the team didn’t have to wait long, as “West Virginia” showed up in the first regional announced the no 8-seeded Mountaineers would join Big 12 foes Oklahoma State, Baylor and Iowa State at the university of louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky it marked the program’s first NCAA appearance since 1947.

Soon after, senior Max Sear became the first Moun taineer in more than 35 years to earn medalist honors when he finished atop the team leader board at the Health Plan Mountaineer invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club. His first-place finish led the Mountaineers to the team title for the first time ever at their home event the inaugural Big 12 Match Play Championship was up next for WVu� the Mountaineers put up a tough battle and came away with a win over iowa State and a tie with Kansas the tavistock Collegiate Invitational, which West Virginia joined uCf in hosting, and the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic wrapped up fall play as the Mountaineers finished with a program-best No. 37 ranking via SpringGolfstattrips down south included a third-place finish at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Florida, and a fourth-place finish at the Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, north Carolina� in an annual tradition, the Mountaineers wrapped up play at rival Penn State’s rutherford intercollegiate, taking home third place�

WV uGolf @WV uGolf WV uGolf the season with a ninth-place finish at the 2018 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship – a program best – and its second straight GCAA All-Academic team award individually, the Mountaineers excelled on the course and in the classroom� Max Sear set a program record with his 73 03 scoring average on the season and became the program’s second-ever GCAA Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Schol ar. He was joined by five teammates in earning Academic All-Big 12 honors freshman Matthew Sharpstene became the program’s first-ever Big 12 Golfer of the Month in november and went on to set a program low round after carding eight birdies to shoot a 64 at Martin Downs in february In just their second season of varsity competition in 2016-17, the Mountaineers posted their first tournament win in more than 30 years when they claimed the title at the east Carolina intercollegiate in April of 2017 Vienna native Alan Cooke set a program record with a 206 at the Seminole inter collegiate in March before tying teammate Max Sear with a record low of 66 WVu set records for lowest team round (277) and 54-hole total (849) at the Seminole intercollegiate as well� the team made strides in the classroom as well, earning GCAA All-Academic team accolades after posting a team GPA of 3 0 or above Chris Williams became the program’s first GCAA All-Academic Scholar by maintaining a GPA of 3 2 or above and a stroke average of 76 or less. Williams and Cooke repeated as members of the Big 12 All-Academic team as well Cooke became the first Mountaineer since 1982 to tee off on Sept 6, 2015, at the tiger turning Stone Invitational in Verona, New York. Tristan Nicholls joined Cooke, Sear, Renwick and Williams in representing West Virginia at the team’s first ever Big 12 Golf Championship at Whispering Pines Country Club in trinity texas April 29-May 1. Though the Mountaineers finished 10th at the event, Sear finished two spots shy of all-conference honors with a 12th-place finish. At Mississippi State, Covich reeled in the no 1 ranked junior college golfer in the nation twice, as Joe Sakulpolphaisan (Darton State College) signed with the Bulldogs in 2012 and tim Walker (Central Alabama Community College) signed with MSu in Covich2014 lettered at Meridian Community College from 1998-2000 and was a member of the 1999 nJCAA region 23 Championship team� He received the Most Dedicated award during the 1998-1999 season Covich lettered in varsity golf for lamar High starting in sixth grade� Covich led the raiders to an unprecedented four consecutive MPSA overall State Championships in 1995-1998 He received the Sportsmanship Award in his junior and senior Covichseasonscompleted his education at Mississippi State, earning his bachelor’s degree in sports communications in 2004 and a master’s degree in sports administration in 2006 in 2005, Covich was the tour Director of the Mis sissippi Junior Golf Association, during that tenure the MJGA experienced record membership and participation� Along with his guidance of the MJGA, Covich conducted 13 junior golf events, including the Mississippi Junior Championship in addition to those duties, he assisted in operating several Mississippi Golf Association state championships such as the State Amateur, Senior Amateur and State four-Ball He began his golf career under his father, PGA Club Professional Jerry Covich, at Briarwood Country Club in Meridian, Miss Covich also worked for longtime PGA Club Professional and robbie Webb Junior Golf Award winner, Jimmy Gamblin, at northwood Country Club Working for his father and Gamblin, Covich led junior clinics and camps at Briarwood and northwood Covich has been in a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America since 2006 He was hon ored with the GCAA Service Award in December of 2015 Covich was selected to serve on the GCAA’s All America Scholar Committee in 2016 in 2005, Covich became titleist Performance Institute Certified Level I and is currently working towards TPI Golf 2 certification. Active in many national professional and service organizations during his tenures, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited Brands and the National 4-H Council. In 2011, Gee was appointed to serve as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 2011-2012, he was asked by Governor Ka sich to chair the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In March 2015, he was elected to the board of directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization. And he served as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee for the 2017-18 year. Gee presently serves on the council of presidents for the Southern University Research Association and as a member of the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration.
Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, hav ing helmed universities for more than three decades. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in his tory and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Jus tice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associ ate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the West Virginia University College of Law, and, in 1980, was named West Virginia University president. He served in that role until 1985. He went on to lead the University of Colorado (1985-1990), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-2007). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to Gee2013.has been a member of several educa tion-governance organizations and committees including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents, the Business-Higher Education Forum and the American Association of Univer sities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Associ ation of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, Gee was invited to join the International Advisory Board of King Adbulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, and he currently serves on the Board of the Royal University for Women in Bahrain.
Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and received the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Gee received the Elite Leadership Academy’s 2020 IMPACT Award, which honors exceptional leaders for self-knowledge, a clear vision and active coaching and mentoring Arelationships.Distinguished Eagle Scout and lifelong Scouting supporter, he has received the Silver Buffalo Award, Scouting’s top honor for adult volunteers. He is the co-author of more than a dozen books, including his two most recent, “Land-Grant Universities for the Future” and “What’s Public About Public Higher Ed?” Gee’s fiancée is Laurie Erickson, leader of the Erickson Foundation. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is clinical associate professor in obstetrics and gynecology at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine and CEO and Founder of Nest Health. Dr. Rebekah Gee is married to David Patrón and they have five children.
Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the over sight and coordination of rules and interpretations for the 25 membership service representatives and was the staff liaison to various NCAA standing committees.
There’s a reason Shane Lyons was named NACDA Athletics Director of the Year in 2021, it’s because he spends endless hours daily for the betterment of more than 500 student-athletes and their day-to-day needs in order to help them succeed in the classroom and in competition. His open lines of communications have made him a popular role model for WVU student-athletes and coaches. His honest, fair and caring approach has led to success on and off the field. Whether it’s regularly scheduled meetings with the student-athletes or his open-door office policy, Lyons has his finger on the pulse of his department. In moving his department forward, his Climbing High er facilities master plan keeps West Virginia a strong Power 5 institution and positions his department for growth and continued success. The Time2Climb fundraising membership drive he initiated in 2021 is getting new donors involved in Mountaineer athletics and helping the Mountaineer Athletic Club grow and plan for the future. In 2019, Lyons commissioned and announced an economic impact study that showed Mountaineer Athletics produced more than $300 million to the state’s economy and more than $78 million to the local economy. And with the local economy in mind, Lyons’s proudly saw the formal opening of a new $45 million aquatic and track facility that not only benefits WVU, but also local schools and the entire commu nity. Already, the facility has brought thousands of guests to Morgantown as it has hosted such events as the Big 12 swimming and diving championships as well as the NCAA zone diving competitions.
Also, a Clinical and Sport Psychology unit that he formed for better student-athlete mental health, creating the department’s first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee and first-class nutrition program for all 18 varsity teams further confirms his belief and commitment to helping the total student-athlete well-being and advancement. Ask him and he’ll tell you it’s not his department, but West Virginia’s department, and part of his job is to develop our country’s future leaders. He cares, and the proof is in what he has accomplished for Moun taineer athletics in his seven years on the job.
When he stresses academics, he means it as a department-high 361 student-athletes made the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and WVU’s overall department GPA was 3.22 last year. WVU featured 493 athletes with a 3.00 GPA and 168 with a 4.0 for the 2022 spring semester.
Lyons, the University’s 12th athletic director, and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of Wis consin-Madison, have two children: Cameron and Brooke.
Cameron is a graduate student-athlete and member of the football team at UNC Charlotte and Brooke is a sophomore at WVU. t he Lyons Family – Brooke, Shane, Emily, Cameron and the family dog Zoey.
His work with WVU President E. Gordon Gee’s senior leadership team and the Big 12 Conference has brought additional respect and positive exposure to his department and the University. He’s been a mem ber of the Big 12 Administration Committee, Finance and Budget Committee and the Game Management and Officiating Subcommittee, while chairing the Big 12 athletic directors committee in 2018.
Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commission er at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in dealing with NCAA regulatory matters.
SHANE LYONS
Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships.
Lyons came to West Virginia after spending more than three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama. He worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership, the direction of the overall Crimson Tide Athletic program and was the direct second in charge.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he chaired the all-important Football Oversight Committee and played a key role in the sport overcoming, adjusting and managing the difficulties to complete the 2020 season. There’s no doubt that Lyons’ even-keeled demeanor, ability to think outside the box and solve problems played a major role in having a football season in Additionally,2020.Lyons serves on the NCAA Working Group on Transfers, the Football Competition Committee and the NCAA Wrestling Academics En hancement Working Group. Making a difference and enhancing the student-athlete experience on these committees is his No. 1 objective.
Long considered one of the nation’s top collegiate leaders, his success and work ethic has also brought national exposure to West Virginia University as Lyons is helping shape the future of college athletics with his presence on several national and prestigious committees. For 2022-23, he will continue to be a member of the NCAA Transformation Committee that is rewriting NCAA policies and procedures and form ing the organization’s guidelines for decades to come.
A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bache lor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively.

Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, ad ministration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and condition ing, nutritional and sports medicine units.
In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organiza tional policies and procedures. He was part of the senior administrative team for ACC events, including the football championship game, the men’s bas ketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events.
