a team, which often you haven’t been before. You’re often get new equipment, and you have all these extra resources. So, freshman year, while it is challenging and everything is new and you’re adjusting to college; if you’re able to do that well, there are so many other changes that can create quicker improvement. after that, during your sophomore, junior and senior years, you’re adjusted more to college life, and i think that becomes easier. Your life balance becomes easier, but sometimes, the quick-and-easy improvements aren’t there anymore. So, it comes down to just getting better, just putting the hours in and working harder. i think she’s ready for that, she’s aware of that. We’re excited to see how she can continue to improve and build off that freshman year. as you go through the years, you have to dig deeper and deeper to find those ways to improve. We’re definitely confident that she’s going to be able to do that, and i think she knows what she needs to do and has a great attitude, like i said, to get to work and do those things.

On his team’s experience and depth heading into the new season:

We had a very deep team last year. There are definitely some that had their challenges last year that have shown improvement already. They’re working hard and having a good attitude, and hopefully, we’ll see improvements from them. if you go back and look at our averages, a very large amount of them are all very similar in where they’re at with scores and averages. So, we’ll have to see how things progress, and i think those that are the most committed, work the hardest and have the best attitudes will be the ones that probably show the most improvement and will rise to the top as the year goes on.

On the rise of competition in collegiate rifle and his outlook on the team’s schedule:

We have to shoot against all the best teams. We’re excited to have our Fall Classic. We’re bringing in the three best teams from last year here to campus to have a tournament-style weekend. The standard last year went up and up. every record got broken last year, and not just once, but multiple teams broke them multiple times. and it was by those three teams – TCU, Kentucky and alaska. They all broke or tied one of the different records at one time. That’s going to be a big challenge. We had a really good run for a while, and teams had to figure out ways to get better and catch us. We’re kind of in that boat now, but we’ve continued to improve. oftentimes, it’s a challenge as a coach to look and say, ‘The last two years, we’ve finished sixth place and fourth place at nCaas, but our season average has been getting better.’ and we’ve been shooting good scores, but other teams have been doing it faster. There is a cap, there is a perfect score. We’re getting closer and closer to that, so to find improvement gets harder and harder. We’re going to get challenged on our schedule. We have those three teams coming in for the Fall Classic, and then, we’re going to go up to alaska and compete against them up at their place for a couple days. Kentucky will be there for one day, as well. our last conference match will be Kentucky, which often decides the regular season. and then, conference championships and nCaas will cap the year. So, we’re going to see those teams a good bit. There are many other good teams out there as well, including ole Miss. We’re going to go to air Force, who also is a team that finished ahead of us last year. We have to challenge ourselves and shoot against the best teams. We need to see where we stack up, try to make improvements, go with confidence and go from there. on overarching message to his team this season: i think consistency is important, for sure. naturally, you want to peak at the end of the year. if we’re going to shoot a school record, we want to do it in February and March, not in September or october. We need to be consistent, but we also have to show steady improvement. That’s going to come from working harder, raising our standards – and not just in the scores we shoot in matches. i think just our standards for our actions and our behaviors; how we practice, how much we practice and just how we are as a team. i think there are definitely things we can improve there, and if we can show steady improvement in many small areas throughout the year, not only do i think consistency will come, but we’ll be able to peak and be our best towards the end of the season.
