2021 in Review
West Virginia finished the season after earing 19 wins, including tying a program best with eight wins in the Big 12. WVU started off the season hot going 10-0 and kept the momentum going during the campaign by sweeping No. 23 Michigan, as well as tallying the first win at Iowa State and first season sweep over Oklahoma in program history. Those wins along with a third-place finish in the Big 12 earned the Mountaineers their first atlarge bid to qualify for the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship. Head Coach Reed Sunahara reached 400 career wins after the statement victory against No. 23 Michigan on Sept. 3. Two Mountaineers ranked in the top-50 nationally, as Skye Stokes finished the season seventh in service aces while Lacey Zerwas garnered 47th in assists per set. Six individuals finished in the top 10 in the Big 12: Lacey Zerwas ranked second with 10.35 assists per set, Skye Stokes ranked second with .55 service aces per set, Alexa Hasting ranked fourth with 4.02 digs per set, Briana Lynch ranked fifth with a .345 hitting efficiency, Adrian Ell ranked seventh with 3.47 kills per set and Natali Petrova ranked eight with .32 service aces per set. Additionally, Briana Lynch, Adrian Ell and Lacey Zerwas earned All-Midwest Regional and All-Big 12 honors. West Virginia’s success was not limited to the court, as nine Mountaineers were named to the Academic All-Big 12 volleyball teams, including six first-team members. Lacey Zerwas and Alexa Hasting earned their awards with a 4.0. Zerwas was also named to Academic AllAmerica Third team, becoming the second Mountaineer all-time to garner the award. Adrian Ell, Alexa Hasting and Lacey Zerwas earned CoSIDA Academic All-District 2. WVU capped off its academic achievements by receiving the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award.
