Celebrating 50 Years!
The 2024-25 season marks a very special milestone for the West Virginia University women’s swimming and diving team This year marks the 50th anniversary of the program since it first competed in 1974-75.
It’s safe to say, the Mountaineers have come a long way in 50 years The program has remained a consistent force in the Big 12 Conference while reaching exceptional heights
A state-of-the-art aquatic center with a 50-meter pool and exquisite diving well at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park provides the Mountaineers with the best atmosphere in which to train and compete
The women’s swimming and diving team has been led by tremendous swimmers for decades Three former swimmers have been inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame, including Bette Hushla, Kim Kaufman and Renee Riccio
Hushla competed for the men’s swimming and diving team in 1965 She never swam for the women’s team, as Title IX did not take effect until 1972, but she remains one of the pioneers who set the stage for women’s swimming at WVU
Winning six of the eight races she entered led to Hushla’s profile in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” section before qualifying for the Southern
SZWABINSKA, JACQUELINE MCCUTCHAN, MIA CHEATWOOD, HARNA MINEZAWA
Conference Championships held in Williamsburg, Virginia, on March 3, 1965 The Southern Conference ruled Hushla ineligible because she was a female Hushla passed away from complications from COVID-19 in 2020
Kaufman was a three-time All-American and four-time NCAA qualifier for the women’s swimming and diving team. She was the first female athlete at WVU to earn NCAA All-America status and was the first swimmer, male or female, to earn four trips to the NCAA Championships
Kaufman also competed in the 100 backstroke at the 1984 United States Olympic Trials. She finished with a final time of 1:07.42 in the prelims.
Riccio is arguably one of the best swimmers in the history of the WVU swimming and diving program Riccio swam for the Mountaineers from 198993 and was a three-time All-American
She was the first WVU swimmer to earn two All-America honors in the same season. Riccio graduated with four school records in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 200 IM and 400 IM.

SEASON PREVIEW
NEW ERA BEGINS FOR SWIMMING AND DIVING IN 2024 as the 2024-25 season begins for the west virginia university swimming and diving program, so does a new era under head coach Brent MacDonald.
MacDonald enters his inaugural season as the head coach of the Mountaineers after serving as the head coach at Xavier since 2009. During his tenure at Xavier, the men’s swimming team won six Big east Championships, including four championships in six years.
The Musketeers won the conference title in the program’s first season in the Big east, and MacDonald was the 2014 Big east Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year.
MacDonald was also the Big east Coach of the Year for the 2014-15, 2019-20 and 2022-23 seasons. He helped develop four Big east Most outstanding Swimmer of the Year award winners at Xavier. in the offseason, MacDonald constructed a coaching staff with a wealth of experience. Former wvu swimming team captain and multi-time Big east champion, Michael walker, was named an associate head coach after spending the 2023-24 season at texas a&M. Before joining the aggies, he spent five seasons (2018-2023) at Delaware as an assistant coach and associate head coach.
walker swam for wvu from 2005-09 and was a team captain during the 2007-08 season. He was also part of West Virginia’s Big East Championship season in 2007 and was a Big East champion in the 200 backstroke in 2008 and the 400 individual medley in 2008 and 2009.
Mark Butcher was named the head diving coach for wvu after spending the last few years at San Jose State. During his tenure, San Jose State divers broke multiple program records.
Butcher also coached the first Mountain West Conference medalist in program history as sophomore Jenna Jagielski finished third in the 1-meter springboard at the conference meet in 2024. Jagielski also became the first diver from San Jose State to qualify for the olympic trials.
rounding out the coaching staff is three-time olympian Sydney Pickrem, James washbish and David Dent. Pickrem competed at the 2024 Paris olympic games, representing team Canada.
Pickrem won bronze as part of the 4x100 meter medley relay team at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. She also was a finalist in the 200 individual medley, placing sixth.
Most recently at the 2024 world aquatics Championships, Pickrem earned silver in the 200 iM, and she also took home bronze in the 200 breaststroke and the 4x100 medley relay.
Dent joins the Mountaineers after serving as head coach at Florida Tech since 2018. Under Dent’s leadership, Florida Tech swimmers achieved program milestones as he sent multiple swimmers to the nCaa Swimming and Diving Division II Championships, and two individuals qualified for the nCaa Championships in 2024.
under Dent, Florida tech’s men’s swimming team ranked no. 19 in the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll in December and January during the 2023-24 season.
washbish returns to the coaching staff after serving as assistant coach for the 2023-24 season. He comes to wvu with eight years of college coaching experience with stops at Kentucky and ohio.
washbish recently served as the assistant swim coach for the Bobcats from 2021-23. in this role, he primarily coached the distance and middledistance freestyle swimmers, created and organized recruiting visits and helped lead fundraising for the program.
Despite many departures from a strong team in 2023-24, MacDonald returns many swimmers who will look to contribute in the pool and the diving well.
Big 12 champion Danny Berlitz returns for his third season in Morgantown after competing at the 2024 united States olympic trials. Berlitz broke two individual program records and was part of the 800-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay teams that broke a program record last season.

WVU VICE PRESIDENT/DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
WREN BAKER
In his first two years as West Virginia’s vice president and director of athletics, wren Baker has faced every challenge head on and has never looked back. His energy has ignited a department, which turned in unprecedented success in 2023-24.
a bowl victory, a men’s soccer College Cup appearance and a first-ever baseball Super Regional were just some of the big moments in year two under Baker, and his high-energy and success have been contagious for Mountaineer athletics in competition and in the classroom.
athletic success and best-ever academic achievement by Mountaineer student-athletes have highlighted Baker’s tenure, while the department also turned in its second-best fundraising numbers ever during the 2024 athletic year. Baker’s success at WVU did not come overnight. He first traveled the state to learn its culture, met Mountaineer fans from all over the world and immersed himself on what it meant to be a proud west virginian. the results of Baker’s approach and work ethic speak volumes and have re-energized west virginia athletics. Despite already hiring five new head coaches, creating a 20-year facility master plan and developing the department’s strategic vision for the coming years, Baker’s plate continues to be full. Budget concerns, a competitive niL structure, lack of premium seating options in his two major sports venues and new revenue generation are being addressed by his administration to solidify the future of west virginia athletics.
Before Missouri, he spent time at Memphis from 2013-15 as deputy athletics director.
wvu President e. gordon gee named Baker as wvu’s vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics on nov. 30, 2022.
