WEST VIRGINIA IN THE AP RANKINGS
Since the Associated Press football poll was established in 1936, West Virginia football and the national rankings have evolved into a regular pairing. Beginning with Pappy Lewis’ magnificent 1953 team that finished No. 10 in the nation and played in the 1954 Sugar Bowl, 21 Mountaineer teams have finished the season rated among the nation’s best by either AP, United Press International or USA Today. The Associated Press rankings began in 1936, United Press International in 1950 and ESPN/USA Today in 1982.
WVU vs. AP Ranked Teams
Since 2000, West Virginia has played 78 teams ranked in the AP Top 25. Twenty-six of those have been Mountaineer wins. Overall, beginning with a 27-0 loss to Fordham on October 18, 1941, West Virginia has played 181 games against teams ranked by the Associated Press. Fifty times (indicated in bold), the Mountaineers have defeated a ranked team, the last victory coming against Iowa State on Oct. 30, 2021.
