wedding bells are ringing in the chapel! I’ve been working in the wedding magazine industry for a long time, and I’ve seen my share of trends come and go over the years. But there are some things that never go out of style. A quaint white chapel perched on a hilltop, for example, is as popular today as it was 50 years ago. In this issue, we traveled to the far corners of the state looking for those picturesque churches (page 30). I hope you recognize a few of our favorite spiritual spots. And what are the other trends that I think are here to stay? Food stations instead of sit-down dinners. Couples are being creative. Ethnic stations, dessert stations, drink stations, and cocktail receptions with pass-around hors d’oeuvres are increasingly popular. Late-night munchies for late-night receptions. Some serving suggestions are doughnuts and cappuccinos, cheeseburger sliders and French fries, a popcorn or nacho station, or a clever cereal bar. Mismatched bridal party dresses instead of the matchy-matchy, one-size-fits-all approach. Meredith Isaacs and Christopher Caplinger’s wedding, featured on page 38, nailed this look. These bright sunny dresses and plaid shawls made me smile. Setting the scene for portraits. I love the extra effort couples are putting into their photos. Check out Pangtography’s photos of Ashley Jaranko and Jonathan Wertman’s wedding, featured on page 50. A Victorian sofa in the middle of an apple orchard—be still my heart! Drone wedding photos. Photographers are taking even more unique shots with the option of drone photography, providing you with a bird’s-eye view of your ceremony. Signature drinks. This is a unique way to reflect your style as a couple and refresh your wedding guests. With each issue of WV Weddings, we aim to inspire you with venue suggestions, décor ideas, beautiful gowns, fabulous florals, creative cakes, and the best wedding vendors in the region. Are you a WV Weddings bride? Then let us know how the publication helped you find that perfect dress, romantic destination, or awesome photographer. Don’t forget to mark your calendar! On March 12, 2016, we will host our hugely popular WV Weddings Extravaganza at the WVU Alumni Center in Morgantown. This is a fun event unlike any other wedding expo in the state! I hope you attend. Our editorial team is looking forward to meeting you in person!

Barn Wedding Basics Thumb through the pages of this magazine and you’ll quickly see that rustic weddings are popular—and West Virginia is the ultimate destination for country-inspired nuptials. I regularly get requests for suggestions on beautiful barns tucked into scenic landscapes, and as I travel the state, I always keep my eyes peeled for that unique rustic location. But a rustic-style wedding takes a little more planning than you may think. Here are some challenges you may run into and the ways to overcome them.

outfitting the barn Who doesn’t gasp at the sight of a beautiful hand-hewn barn adorned with twinkling white lights and crystal chandeliers? Add a black and white checked dance floor juxtaposed with dozens of hay bales and even my heart skips a beat. Just be prepared—it is very rare to find a barn perfectly outfitted for your elegant country theme. But that doesn’t mean you can’t transform a barn into your dream setting. Just know that it takes a bit more than a large collection of Mason jars, and it can be more expensive than you think. Here are a few basic things you will likely need: ❤ ❤ ❤ 16 | WV WEDDINGS Fall/Winter 2015

parking perils You’ve found your location, but the last thing you want is hundreds of cars ruining your view. Typically, cars are parked away from the site to keep from disrupting the ambience and ruining photographs. If your guests are going to hike to the location, be cognizant of what people are wearing. It is hard to navigate cow pies in heels. And if it is raining, do you have a plan to help people arrive without becoming waterlogged? Also, don’t forget the elderly and disabled. Rutted and soggy grounds are hard to traverse. Having a shuttle—a horse drawn carriage or tractor pulling a wooden trailer—to take guests from their cars to your venue is always a good idea. Remember to supply a sturdy set of steps to make climbing out of the wagon easier on those in dresses.

buggy bugs Every outdoor wedding has to battle bugs. If you are on a working farm, it is even buggier. Keep baskets of bug spray around and available to guests.

Bridal

Turner Medical Spa has developed a useful bridal guide to help you prepare your skin, hair, body, and mind for your big day.

L A V I V R SU Guide

6 MONTHS BEFORE Laser hair removal Complexion perfection with glycolic peels, microdermabrasion and skin care

If the barn is a working barn, chances are it isn’t insulated. In late fall and early spring, it can be drafty. Consider renting heaters or providing blankets or shawls to keep your guests from shivering. On the flip side, in the summer it can be miserably warm. Fans and cooling units are a good idea.

3 MONTHS BEFORE

Botox - rid yourself of expression induced wrinkles Bridal facials and massage - de-stressing is vital

If you are holding your ceremony at a rustic site, make sure you have a place to get ready—and a barn stall won’t do. Prep spaces need to be outfitted with mirrors, a sink, and seating. You’ll want a place to go for touch-ups during the reception, too.

2 MONTHS BEFORE

1 MONTH BEFORE

Trailer-style toilets beat Porta-Potties any day. They can come air conditioned or heated and often include sinks. If you opt for Porta-Potties, make sure you rent more than one. Don’t place them where you will want to take photographs and don’t neglect them when decorating your venue. Fresh flowers, baskets of hand wipes, and candles can help transform a sterile environment.

Imagining hundreds of string lights draped from beam to beam? Make sure your location has electricity and make note of where the outlets are. Do you need power cords? Outlets for fans or heaters? Does your band need to plug in? How much wattage can the system handle? Consider having a backup generator.

hayfever Do you or any of your wedding party or guests have allergies? When choosing a rustic barn location, think about potential allergic reactions. If your heart is set on hay bales, your guests may spend the evening sniffling and sneezing.

QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU …

book a photographer Choosing your photographer is one of the most important decisions you will make. As you interview candidates, look for a photographer who makes you feel comfortable, who shoots in a style that you like, and who listens to your concerns and desires. Below are a few key questions every bride and groom should ask prospective wedding photographers.

Are you available on my wedding date? First things first. How long have you been shooting weddings? How many do you photograph a year? A sports photographer isn’t necessarily good at shooting weddings. Look into her professional experience. Do you have a portfolio of recent weddings you’ve photographed? Look at several weddings in the photographer’s portfolio. His style will become evident.

Do you have a list of references? Ask for references and call them. Ask what the experience was like and whether they’d hire that photographer again.

How would you describe your wedding photography style? Many brides today opt for a more photojournalistic, artistic style. They don’t want the overly posed photos of yesteryear. What separates your work from other photographers? Again, this is a good question for identifying what is important to the photographer.

Do you have experience with my venue? Your photographer should be familiar with your venue so she knows which spots work well for photographs and whether there are any lighting needs. If she hasn’t been to your venue, she should scope it out in advance.

What is included in your packages? When comparing fees, check whether prints, albums,

proofs, and extras like engagement shoots are covered. These extras can all alter your costs significantly.

way to get to know your photographer and to become more comfortable with his style. If an engagement session isn’t included, ask for it.

What isn’t included in your packages? This is a telling question that will help you communicate expectations. 18 | WV WEDDINGS Fall/Winter 2015

How many hours of coverage do we get? What is the charge for overtime? Knowing

what to expect in overtime charges will help you stick to a schedule. Communicate clearly with the photographer so that she knows if you want her to leave at a certain time even if the cake hasn’t been cut.

What is the deposit and total fee? No surprises, please.

Will there be a second shooter or any assistants? Is there an additional fee for each? Second shooters can provide you with more coverage, but this may cost extra.

Do you charge a travel fee and what does it cover? Some photographers charge for mileage

if the distance is outside their immediate surroundings.

What is your refund/cancellation policy? Life happens. Be informed in case your plans change.

What is the time frame for receiving proofs of the wedding photos? Will they be available online, on a CD, or on a thumb drive? You don’t want wait a year for your photos. Find out how long the turnaround is and when you can expect to see proofs.

Do you provide retouching, color adjustment, or other corrective services? It doesn’t matter if you and your groom are model-perfect, retouching and color adjustments always make for better photos.

What is the ordering process for photos and albums? How long will it take to receive them? Once you see the proofs, you’ll want to know how long creating an album or processing the photos will take.

Will I be provided with all the digital images? Will they be color corrected? Is there an additional fee? If you want all 2,000 images your photographer shoots, find out if it is possible.

What are the restrictions for sharing photos online or for publication? Who owns the copyrights for the photos? Know whether you

are allowed to share on Facebook or Instagram and, if so, always credit your photographer.

Will you post our wedding on your social media? Sometimes brides want their photos to remain private. Be clear about your expectations.

When will I receive a written contract?

When you are ready to make the commitment, get it all in writing. mywvwedding.com | 19

rival the romance and serenity of a church in fall. Steeples point skyward, bright autumn leaves swirl underfoot, a quiet stone path leads to the front doors—places of worship offer a classic elegance and sense of tradition difficult to reproduce in even the grandest secular venues. Whether swathed in glimmering décor or left sweet and simple, a church wedding can bring community, regional history, and culture together in an unforgettable way. West Virginia is a diversely religious state. In 2000 there were more than 4,000 churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples within our borders, including more than 1,000 Methodist, 400 Baptist, and 100 Catholic churches. The Mountain State claims a spectrum of spiritual settings to choose from, and affianced couples who crave faithbased ceremonies will find plenty of options, from Civil War-era white clapboard chapels tucked into quiet hillsides to cathedrals with soaring arches and vibrant frescos in the hearts of beautiful cities. Here we highlight just a handful of churches with fascinating histories and breathtaking features from across the state to spark your imagination. Just remember: These are private facilities. Many places of worship have special requirements for couples who wish to wed on their properties. Call ahead to confirm any details before setting your heart on a location.

Onego Church of the Brethren y The landscape around this pristine white church is its own extraordinary experience. Just a few miles from the craggy mountain peak of local landmark Seneca Rocks, Onego Church (“one-go”), was built in 1908 and continues to stand in beautiful condition, despite weathering floods in 1985 and 1996—both of which destroyed the church’s basement but didn’t endanger the main structure. Outside, the building’s romantic tower and gabled roof cast a long shadow over a lush lawn, a rustic stonewall, and stone steps. Inside, the church has two aisles, rather than a single central aisle, and the conveniences of bathrooms and a kitchen. ➻ 3153 ALLEGHENY DRIVE, SENECA ROCKS. One of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in West Virginia, St. John’s has been a fixture of Monroe County since at least the 1850s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Instrumental in the church’s construction were William Lynn Lewis and his wife, Letitia Preston Floyd. Floyd was family to several prominent statesmen, including her grandfather, Virginia Governor John Floyd, and brother John B. Floyd, a Virginia governor who was secretary of war on the eve of the Civil War. Over the years this masonry Greek Revival-style church welcomed Irish immigrants, wealthy landowners, railroad workers, and African American slaves alike. And despite recent damage to the roof, church officials are rebuilding and plan to reopen it for weddings. ➻ STATE ROUTE 311, SWEET SPRINGS. St. John’s Chapel y

Tygarts Valley Church y This Victorian-Gothic church listed on the National Register of Historic Places dates to 1883, and its 105-foot spire and rolled cathedral glass windows, imported from Scotland, still inspire awe. The church was born of a Presbyterian heritage active in the community since 1772, though the current building is a replacement for what was known as the Old Brick Church, built in 1820 and destroyed by Union forces during the Civil War. Noted bridge builder Lemuel Chenoweth built this Tygarts Valley Church— the first building west of the Alleghenies to be designed by an architect. ➝ U.S. ROUTE 219/U.S. ROUTE 250, HUTTONSVILLE. Glady Presbyterian Church and Manse y The picture of serenity, this 110-year-old Late Gothic Revival-style church and parsonage in Randolph County is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was constructed in 1905 by employees of the Glady Fork Lumber Company and still houses the potbellied stove and simple light fixtures of its early days. With a stone foundation, graceful arched doorways, metal gabled roof, and pyramidal steeple, it just might be the quintessential quiet country chapel. The manse, or minister’s house, was built in 1908 and is a two-story American foursquare with a hipped roof. ➝ RANDOLPH AVENUE, GLADY.

Cathedral of St. Joseph y

With its twin turrets flanking a cut glass rose window and a grand dome towering 148 feet over the streets of Wheeling, St. Joseph’s is a cathedral in every sense of the word. Inside, parishioners worship under an arched sanctuary ceiling decorated in colorful murals. Built in 1926 in the Lombardy-Romanesque style, the church cost nearly half a million dollars to complete. St. Joseph’s history, however, goes back to 1847, when the original cathedral was built. Although the original church no longer stands, St. Joseph’s has risen in its place and serves as the seat of both the Diocese of WheelingCharleston and as the oldest parish in the city. ➻ 1300 EOFF STREET, WHEELING, 304.233.4121 SAINTJOSEPHCATHEDRAL.COM

Baxter Presbyterian Church y In the summer of 1858, residents of Dunmore, many of whom belonged to Liberty Presbyterian Church in Green Bank, decided the five-mile commute to worship services had become impractical. It was time to build their own church. Allegedly named for the man who built it, Baxter Presbyterian has changed very little since its pre-Civil War construction, despite being used as a shelter by Union troops and as a hospital during nearby Civil War battles. âžť 15256 BROWNS CREEK ROAD, DUNMORE. 36 | WV WEDDINGS Fall/Winter 2015

Wild Meadow Baptist Church y This little log church is rustic simplicity at its best. Drive five miles north on State Route 92 from White Sulphur Springs and you’ll find it, peeking out from a copse of hardwoods. Built in the 1930s by church members, the building started its life as Bethel Log Church and became Wild Meadow Baptist Church after changing hands in the 1940s. Although the church held its last regular service in 2004 and has since closed, it is still a beloved local landmark and part of regional history. ➝ 2817 POCAHONTAS TRAIL, WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, 304.536.3707, WILDMEADOWBAPTIST.COM mywvwedding.com | 37

After six years of friendship, these former next-door neighbors fell in love with an ocean between them. written by

The Herrintons

Y Meredith and Chris were neighbors and best friends for six years before Cupid took aim. Their nuptials were held at Herot Hall in Kenna, a blueberry farm with a beautiful mountain view.

you’d think it’d be easy, falling in love with your best friend. But for Charleston native Meredith Isaacs and Chris Caplinger of Pocahontas County, it took some time. “We actually knew each other for six years. We met as sophomores in college at West Virginia University and we were next door neighbors,” Meredith says. It was 2008 when Meredith and her two female roommates moved into a cozy flat at Aerostar Apartments. They met Chris and his two male roommates on move-in day. Soon the groups were meeting up to share rides to church and for “dysfunctional family dinners,” as Meredith calls them, on their shared porch overlooking the WVU football stadium. There, they huddled around mugs of hot coffee in the colder months and stayed up late to talk about everything and anything—especially faith, football, and all things outdoors. “We would always joke that we should just knock down the wall between our apartments,” she says. “We were always together anyway.” Although Meredith was an extrovert and Chris was the opposite, the two clicked. “I was always the quiet one,” he says. “But I admired her because she was so good at making people feel at home and including them in everything. Being nurturing comes pretty natural to her. That was something I saw in her early on.” But Chris already had a girlfriend, so a relationship was off limits. Still, through the ups and downs of college life and even after, when Meredith moved to Colorado for an internship, the two supported each other and kept in touch.

40 | WV WEDDINGS Fall/Winter 2015

When Meredith finally moved back to West Virginia and reunited with her old friends, something had changed. “When I moved back from Colorado, my friend and I were having typical girl talk about guys and settling down and who we could see ourselves with, and the first face that popped into my head was Chris’s,” Meredith says. Chris was also single again, and sitting with him on his couch, catching up and reminiscing, Meredith realized something monumental. “I was like, ‘Wow— I’m in love with my best friend.’ Of course I’m old fashioned so I didn’t want to say anything. I wanted him to make the first move. But,” she laughs, “he’s a slow mover.” Chris did eventually make the move, but he didn’t have the best timing. In fact, he admitted his growing feelings for Meredith not long after announcing his decision to move to Guizhou, China, to teach English. Meredith was understandably shocked. But she supported his decision. They’d waited six years to fan their little spark into a flame, and a few thousand miles and an ocean between them wasn’t going to snuff it out. “I think we both saw something there and we just decided it was worth it,” Chris says. So they did the long-distance thing, and somehow it worked. It worked so well, Chris was prepared to propose before he’d even returned from China. Thankfully, Meredith’s dad gave him a little help

in June 2014, flying him to Spoleto, Italy, to meet up with Meredith and her family on their vacation. One afternoon, in a little olive grove beneath an ancient Roman aqueduct, Chris worked up the courage to say all the words he’d been holding back. “I had written her a poem a long time before and was too embarrassed to read it. But I found it that day and knew it was time.” Chris asked Meredith to stand while he knelt, read her the poem, and asked her to marry him. Of course she said yes. “It’s hard to say ‘no’ in a place like that,” he jokes.

blue and gold spirit

For two best friends whose paths aligned on a porch overlooking Morgantown’s Milan Puskar Stadium, fall football season is a magical time of year, so it was a natural choice to have a fall wedding in West Virginia. And Meredith isn’t ashamed to admit they chose their autumn wedding date because the WVU and Texas Tech University game fell on October 11, 2014. “That’s one reason we had the wedding on Sunday, October 12,” she says. “That way everyone could watch the game Saturday, and Sunday we could celebrate.” Their second joint decision was the setting. Meredith had always dreamed of having a wedding at her grandparents’ historic farm in Ripley, but with unpredictable fall weather and a large expected headcount, an outdoor wedding seemed too risky. The next best thing? Nearby Herot Hall in Kenna, a blueberry farm that had recently been turned into a gorgeous wedding venue. “Walter Moore, the owner, was in the process of remodeling his horse barn to use for weddings. He stripped it bare, poured concrete, put in heat and air conditioning, and built patios.” With remodeled bathrooms and dressing rooms, new outdoor lighting, an expanded ballroom, and 360-degree views of mountains and berry bushes, “It was perfect,” she says.

falling into place

Meredith and Chris pulled off their perfectly personalized yet guest-centric fall wedding in just a few months. From a photo shoot at a historic

church to a lace gown paired with beloved cowboy boots to plaid shawls perfect for keeping out the chill, this event was head-to-toe country chic.

Meredith had her eye on the BHLDN line of wedding dresses by Anthropologie early on, but without a nearby Anthropologie store to try a few on, she wasn’t certain. “I’d always liked lace wedding dresses, but it’s true you don’t know what you’re going to get until you try it on,” she says. Her first choice had sleeves. “But I wasn’t sure how I felt about that.” So she and her mother took a trip to David’s Bridal in Charleston to try on similar looks. Wandering the aisles, Meredith and her mother came across one dress that stood out—a full-length fitted lace gown with cap sleeves and a romantic train. All other dresses faded from Meredith’s mind. The minute she put it on she knew it would pair perfectly with her Colorado cowboy boots. “It was a random thing. We didn’t go in looking to buy a dress. After finding the venue, that was the next thing to just fall into place.” She later added accents like chiffon flowers in her hair, gold and pearl jewelry, a plaid shawl to keep out the chill, and a bouquet of sunflowers, rosemary, craspedia, Queen Anne’s lace, and baby’s breath. The bride picked yellow dresses for her bridesmaids, who also wore shawls and boots and carried fall bouquets. The men joined them in khaki pants, blue shirts, suspenders, and bowties; but the groom stood out with a yellow bowtie, brown corduroy jacket, and a boutonniere of yellow craspedia and rosemary tied with twine. mywvwedding.com | 41

The wedding party’s ensembles perfectly complemented the barn’s rustic décor. From

together during their first look. “I know a lot of brides go the more traditional route and don’t want to see their grooms. But I knew I had to see Chris,” Meredith says. They met outside an old church across the road from the farm. “That was always a place I went for walks with my great aunt. She passed away when I was in college, and not having her at the wedding was really hard. It was like I was missing a grandparent. Having our pictures there made it feel like I was including her and that was really important.” The wedding party joined them for photos beside the church and in front of an old barn then quickly dispersed to give the lovers a minute to themselves. “It was a chance for Chris and me to see each other away from the crowd and have a special moment together,” she says.

the first storm

Despite a few gray clouds, the rain held off—from the sweet ceremony to the rustic reception decorated in antique blue Mason jars filled with fall foliage and fresh flowers. Guests stayed dry while dining on finger foods, a popcorn bar, desserts, and coffees, as well as two cakes— one flavored in blackberry, blueberry, and lemon, and the other a layered pumpkin spice cake with buttercream icing and gilded fruit. Bluegrass music, berry hunting, With hundreds of friends and family coming from near and lawn games kept attendees laughing all day without and far, Chris and Meredith wanted to make sure their wedding was fun and memorable for all. “The whole time a single burst of thunder to interfere. Plans were interrupted on the couple’s second night as we asked ourselves, ‘How can we treat our guests well and think about them and not just us?’ It meant so much to us husband and wife, however, en route to St. John in the to have so many people coming from as far as California, Virgin Islands, when a massive storm hit. Wins LOVE

After years of ďŹ ghting for love, this Huntington couple pulled together the wedding of their dreams in a month. Miriah Hamrick photographed by Lavender Photography written by

for justin murdock and will glavaris, the old adage that love happens when you least expect it couldn’t be truer. When Justin and Will locked eyes on a dance floor one night in January 2011, both were fresh out of long-term relationships and neither was interested in meeting anyone. But Justin, the go-getter of the pair, knew there was something special about Will and refused to let the opportunity pass by. “I thought he was quite a good-looking fella and I wanted to get to know him,” Justin says. Will was reluctant to relent to the chemistry between them, but within a few dances, his resolve faded. “I was in no hurry to dive back into dating, but he won me over with his charm and his determination,” Will says. Even though the men were intrigued by each other, at the end of the night, their respective groups of friends pulled them in different directions before they could exchange contact information. Justin was determined to see Will again and, after finding out how to get in touch with him to arrange a proper first date, the two were soon a couple. “It happened very fast,” Justin recalls of those early times. “In the first couple days, we weren’t ever apart.” Though Justin was quick to fall for Will, he was slow to introduce him to his son, Pitus, and daughter, Vaida. “They didn’t meet him for a long time after we started dating. I was very careful about that,” Justin says. When Justin finally arranged for Will to meet the kids during an evening of pizza and games at Billy

Bob’s Wonderland in Barboursville, a slight case of nerves didn’t prevent him from becoming fast friends with Pitus and Vaida. “I was already falling in love with Justin and I knew how important his kids were to him, but it all happened so naturally. It was like I’d known them their entire lives,” Will says. For Justin, the deal was sealed when his children approved of his new partner. “He won me over with my kids,” Justin says. “When they absolutely adored him, it was hard for me not to.”

wait-listed for love

As the couple’s one-year anniversary approached, Justin planned for a surprise proposal at a friend’s birthday party. Looking back, Will says he should have realized Justin had something up his sleeve when one of his best friends, who knew no one at the party, was invited to come along. When Justin stood up to make a speech for the birthday girl, Will was confused to hear Justin talking about him. “He started giving a toast and it was about me, and I was like, ‘Be quiet! Calm down! This is our friend’s birthday. What are you doing?’ It turned out he was proposing, and I was completely shocked,” Will says. For Justin, Will’s embarrassment was part of the plan—it was how he knew his surprise was successful. “He wasn’t sure what I was doing. He thought I had lost my mind, but he came around pretty quickly,” Justin says. For many couples, an engagement prompts a string of decisions: setting a wedding date, picking a theme and colors, finding the

perfect venue. For Justin and Will, their engagement posed one tough question: Wait for the right to marry in West Virginia, where same-sex marriage was still banned, or plan a ceremony in another state where it was already legal? “We made a conscious decision to not get married in another state. We both grew up here, and this is where we live and work, so we wanted to get married here, too,” Justin says. Firm in their commitment to wait for a West Virginia wedding, Justin and Will began talking about ways to make their dream come true. “It’s something we felt strongly about,” Will says. “We wanted to get married in our state and we couldn’t, so we got together and figured, ‘What can we do?’”

fight for your right

After years of fighting for the right to marry, Justin Murdock and Will

Glavaris pulled off a pictureperfect fall wedding in just a month, planning

a ceremony at the First Congregational UCC in Huntington.

The bolder of the two, Justin still shies away from claiming the title of activist. “I always have all these big ideas about how I’m going to change the world. Most people think I’m nuts, but Will supports me and pushes me to accomplish all these harebrained ideas,” Justin says. Will has strongly held convictions that linger behind his soft-spoken demeanor, but he is happy to support Justin’s visions while occupying a space outside the spotlight. “Justin has all these ideas and he’s a go-getter. He’s so determined. I follow him and support him,” Will says. That support pulled Will out of his comfort zone less than a month into their engagement when the couple planned a peaceful protest on Valentine’s Day in 2012. Instead of a romantic dinner, they tried to file for a marriage license at the Cabell County Courthouse. The attempt was the first installment of the couple’s years-long pursuit of the right to marry in West Virginia, which involved a 2014 federal lawsuit challenging the state’s same-sex marriage ban. Will and Justin came one step closer to their happy ending on October 9, 2014, almost three years after that first Valentine’s Day protest. Expecting a shift in policy, Will was traveling to Charleston to get a copy of his birth certificate when the news came down: Governor Earl Ray Tomblin announced that West Virginia would act in compliance with a ruling that declared Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional. Excited, he tried to call Justin, who had left his phone at work while he picked up his kids from school. “I got back to the office and had dozens of messages and missed calls on my phone, and I immediately knew what it was,” Justin says. Will drove straight to the Cabell County Courthouse, where the couple could finally get a legal license to wed. You would think that Justin and Will were experts at filing for a marriage license; after all, they had marched up the steps of the courthouse before, if only to receive letters politely rejecting their requests. But when they entered the courthouse on October 9, poised to make history as the first same-sex couple to acquire a marriage license in Cabell County, a small oversight almost sent them home in disappointment again. “We didn’t know that they don’t take debit cards,” Will says. It turned out they weren’t the only people awaiting the historic moment. “We had people throwing money at us—reporters, friends, strangers.” Hand in hand, Justin and Will left the courthouse holding the license, the culmination of years of sacrifice and persistence. mywvwedding.com | 47

whirlwind wedding

Both Justin and Will had always dreamed of a fall wedding and, after years of waiting, taking another year to plan a big event didn’t seem like an option. “Neither one of us would be able to stand watching a bunch of other couples get married that year while we were planning a wedding of our own, so we decided to just do it,” Justin says. The date was set for November 8, and Justin and Will got to work. The timing was too tight for traditional invitations, but the couple let friends and family know by making phone calls and creating a Facebook event. “Everyone we knew was following our story anyway. They were watching pretty closely to see what we were going to do, so it was easy to get in touch with everybody,” Justin says. The couple’s church, the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Huntington, would host the ceremony. Securing a venue for the reception on such short notice proved more challenging. “Every place we tried was booked,” Justin says. The couple pulled some strings and friends who run The Wild Ramp, a cooperative that sells locally produced food in Huntington, agreed to let Justin and Will use the covered market area for the reception. The men shopped together for suits, mixing and matching pieces wherever they could find them and picking ties from an assortment ordered from Amazon. When the big day arrived, friends and family surrounded Justin and Will as they got ready for the ceremony at their home in Huntington and traveled to the church. When the first notes of Schubert’s “Ave Maria” sounded, the men walked down two parallel aisles to the altar for a heartfelt, celebratory ceremony. “It was emotional on a lot of different levels. Obviously it was our wedding day and that was a celebration, but it was also a celebration of the fact that we could get married, period,” Justin says. In recognition of the hurdles the couple had faced to arrive at the altar, friends Justin Murphy and Jess George performed “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz. Justin and Will wrote their own vows, which they tearfully exchanged. The tears were a rare show of emotion for Justin. “He does not cry,” Will says. “I was shocked to see him cry.” At the end of the ceremony, guests cheered when the officiant used the phrase “by the power vested in me by the state of West Virginia” to pronounce the men married. Next, guests moved to The Wild Ramp, where twinkling lights, hay bales, and accents of soft, muted fall colors replaced the tables dotted with produce that typically decorate the outdoor market. To kick off the celebration, friends of the couple presented a slideshow detailing the obstacles Justin and Will overcame to get married. A buffet of beef brisket and barbecue, smoked on-site by Nelson’s Meat Processing, as well as a popcorn machine and s’mores bar fueled the fun that came next: dancing. Will says dancing with Justin is one of his favorite memories from the reception, but the newlyweds weren’t the only ones letting loose on the dance floor. “People were dancing that I did not expect to dance,” Justin says. When the couple left, guests threw fall leaves, collected in paper bags and decorated with stamps by Justin’s daughter, instead of rice. Despite the hectic month of planning, neither Justin nor Will would change a thing about the wedding they enjoyed. “There was no time to stress or worry, and everything came together perfectly,” Will says. “I can’t imagine a different wedding if we’d had a year, or even two years, to plan.” 48 | WV WEDDINGS Fall/Winter 2015

An autumnal reception followed later that evening at The Wild Ramp in Huntington, where guests

celebrated the couple among decorations of twinkling lights, hay bales, and fall color.

paths didn’t cross until years after graduation, when Ashley was contemplating big changes in her life. “I was in a vulnerable position. I was trying to decide what I wanted to do with my life. I was living at home and I wasn’t looking to date anyone or meet anyone,” she says. By conventional standards, the timing seemed off, but within a month of dating, both Jonathan and Ashley realized they had found their life partners. The relationship grew serious, especially when Jonathan offered compassion and support following the death of Ashley’s childhood best friend a few months after they met. “I took it hard, as you can imagine. It was very meaningful that he came into my life when he did and was there to provide comfort,” Ashley says.

he waved, and she struggled to remember who he was. It’s not your typical love-at-first-sight story, but Ashley Jaranko wasn’t looking for romance when a mutual friend introduced her to Jonathan Wertman at The Three Onions, a restaurant and bar in Shepherdstown, in March 2009. That was a busy night, Ashley says, and their introduction was brief. The next day, she left for a vacation in Aspen. When she walked into The Three Onions a few weeks later, she didn’t recognize the tall guy waving at her. But Jonathan, a Martinsburg native who had just arrived in the Eastern Panhandle after finishing law school, remembered meeting her. “She was obviously beautiful and she had a real energy and spirit about her,” Jonathan says. “I was intrigued by that and interested to know more about her.” Luckily, Jonathan wasn’t discouraged when it took Ashley a few moments to recall their introduction, and by both accounts, the two have been inseparable ever since. “After she remembered who I was, we really hit it off,” Jonathan says. Looking back, Ashley says it feels fated that she met Jonathan when she did. The two shared many mutual friends and attended high schools less than 30 miles apart, but their

Ashley and Jonathan quickly committed to one another, moving in together after seven months, but the proposal came almost five years after their initial meeting. Once the couple began having serious discussions about marriage, Jonathan started working with a local jeweler to design a custom ring, using the diamond from her grandmother’s engagement ring as the centerpiece and choosing features that reflected her personality. “We put in some elements that really represent her,” Jonathan says. “We added a little black diamond in the bottom corner. She’s got her rebellious side, and I wanted to represent that.” Designing the ring was only one task Jonathan had to juggle in his quest to plan and pull off a memorable proposal. Ashley knew it was coming, but Jonathan hoped to surprise her with the details, which included orchestrating the event so Ashley’s best friend from college could travel to town to be part of the experience. “Trying to coordinate two schedules without making it look like something was going on was very difficult,” Jonathan says. “But at the same time, it was fun to traverse those details and come up with a plan.” Schedules aligned on a snowy Friday evening in early January, when Jonathan asked Ashley to go to the Rumsey Monument, one of the couple’s favorite spots in Shepherdstown, after dinner. “Inviting her out to the monument in the beginning of January was a little bit tough to do, but luckily it was a beautiful night and she was happy to oblige,” Jonathan says. A stunning view of the Potomac River’s winding trail through the Shenandoah Valley awaited the couple at the top of the monument. “There was snow on the ground, and the sky was clear so you could see all the stars,” Ashley says. As beautiful as the view was, the temperature was freezing, so Jonathan didn’t waste any time getting down on one knee and asking Ashley to marry him. As the couple walked down the steps to their car, Ashley’s friend arrived. “We hugged and cried and it was really, really perfect,” Ashley says.

Initially, Ashley wasn’t won over by the romantic, vintage-inspired Maggie Sottero gown with a beaded lace illusion neckline over a sweetheart underlay, despite a teary reception from her mom and sister. “It was the second dress I tried on. She tried on a couple more dresses, but when she returned to the Maggie Sottero gown and everyone got teary-eyed again, she knew she’d found the one.

Less than a week after Ashley and Jonathan got engaged, Ashley learned she was accepted into a doctorate program in physical therapy at Shenandoah University. As the wedding date approached and Ashley faced mounting responsibilities as a full-time graduate student—including an 8 a.m. exam the day before her wedding—the couple’s family as well as a close-knit group of Ashley’s girlfriends stepped up to make sure all details fell into place. “They really wanted to take the stress off me,” Ashley says. “We had a lot of hands on our side.” Using only a few pictures as inspiration, a group of 30 close friends and family members arrived at the venue the day before the wedding, hanging lights from rafters, arranging tabletop decorations, even building the frame for the set of doors that would open to the aisle at the ceremony location. When Ashley arrived at the orchard after her exam, she found her vision brought to life. when anna yahn traveled to visit her best friend, Diana, in southern Maryland in 2006, the last thing on her mind was meeting her future husband. “I had just gotten out of a relationship and I wasn’t looking for anyone,” Anna says of her trip from northern Virginia where she worked as an interior designer. “I was there to help my girlfriend meet somebody. That was the whole point of us going out.” After dinner one night, the women had decided to go dancing when Diana suddenly changed her mind. “We actually did a U-turn and ended up at the Green Door, one of those hometown bars local people go to,” Anna says. In walked some of Diana’s coworkers from Naval Air Station Patuxent River as well as Navy personnel she didn’t know— like civilian aerospace engineer Brandon Jones. Brandon spotted Anna at the bar and made his way to her through the crowd. He says he remembers exactly why: “She was cute!” Conversation ignited. “We just hit it off,” Anna says. “We started talking about travel and all the places we had been.” Brandon’s work had taken him to Asia and Europe, and Anna had studied abroad in London and visited Switzerland and Amsterdam while earning her interior design degree from West Virginia University. By the end of the evening, Anna knew that Brandon was about to leave for a monthlong trip to Japan to work on an aircraft carrier. But before that, he would make a 45-minute trip to Arlington, Virginia, to have coffee.

a blossoming relationship

After Brandon returned from Japan, the couple had what they call their first “real” date. “We spent the entire day together,” Anna says. They packed a lunch and hiked through Maryland’s woodlands to a beach with a cliff. “I ended up staying for dinner and he made tempura—this crazy elaborate meal from scratch.” The couple’s fascination with Japanese dishes continued as Anna and Brandon sought out their favorites at various restaurants. They even traveled to Japan together between plenty of hiking, biking, and talking on a regular basis. “We saw each other pretty much every weekend,” Anna says. After a year of traveling back and forth between southern Maryland and the Washington, D.C., area, they decided to move in together and settled in Alexandria, Virginia. At about that time, the couple experienced a memorable near mishap. “My grandmother had given me her wedding ring a long time ago, and I thought I had lost it,” Anna says. A white gold Art Deco setting featuring three round diamonds, the piece was very special to Anna and her family. “It was probably the first time Brandon saw me cry,” she says. But after a day, Anna realized the ring had just been misplaced. She discovered the ring box tucked safely into a basket in her closet. The moment was a little confusing, Brandon says. He thought maybe she was asking him to marry her. Anna did give the ring to him

themed their beautiful fall wedding in Anna’s hometown of Wheeling.

After a Catholic ceremony at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Wheeling, the wedding party moved to the Oglebay Resort & Conference Center

for an elegant reception in the Glessner ballroom. Guests particularly enjoyed the build-your-own paper airplane kits designed by the groom.

and told him she wanted him to keep it and someday give it to her. Six years later, he did.

secret keepers

To say she was surprised is probably a stretch, Anna says, but Brandon did catch her off guard. After a couple of failed attempts due to nerves, he popped the question on a blustery December day in 2013. As the couple walked to a favorite sushi restaurant for dinner, Brandon began fidgeting in his jacket. He stopped, dropped to one knee, and pulled out Anna’s grandmother’s ring. “It was so emotional,” Anna says. “I was blubbering and crying so much, he had to ask me if I said ‘yes.’” Before proposing, Brandon had asked Anna’s dad for her hand in marriage. “My dad kept that secret—which is shocking,” Anna says. But she had a secret of her own. About a month before the engagement, Anna had been shopping with her sister when they stumbled upon Anna’s dream wedding dress—a Couture gown by Roya at the designer’s store in Alexandria. “They were having a trunk sale, and I walked to the back of the shop and found my dress. I saw it and knew it was the one,” Anna says. The ivory gown featured cap sleeves, layers of white tulle, hand-beaded lace, and a drop waist with a rhinestone belt. “It was vintage looking, but had a modern twist,” Anna says. The sisters returned the next day to purchase the dress and, after an emotional conversation with their mother, didn’t tell another soul about their find.

out of this world

Three months after their engagement, Anna and Brandon moved to Brandon’s home state of California, where he accepted an opportunity to work on Google X’s Project Wing. While Brandon created a drone-based delivery system and Anna established a branch of SKB Architecture & Design in Redwood City, California, the couple had a wedding to plan. “It was a little stressful,” Anna says. Considering the vintage flair of her gown and ring, Brandon’s passion for aerospace, and the couple’s shared interest in travel, Anna wanted to incorporate a theme that wove vintage Art Deco with planes, aviation, and travel. The venue was a given. “I was raised going to the Cathedral of St. Joseph, and my high school, Wheeling Central, was 62 | WV WEDDINGS Fall/Winter 2015

bridesmaids wore floor-length charcoal gray lace dresses with large keyhole openings in the front—a look both modern and vintage. In her own special lace gown, Anna carried a cascade bouquet inspired by Pinterest and the bouquet her mother carried at her own wedding. It featured ivory and peach roses, lots of greens, and a touch of red berries, all tied with an emerald green ribbon. “The most special thing in my bouquet was a blue hankie that had been made by my namesake, my great-grandmother, Anna Marie Clouse. My grandmother gave it to me for my something blue.” Everything was going according to plan, but still, on such a big day it’s hard not to have a few jitters. “I was definitely nervous,” Anna says. Brandon remembers his first glimpse of Anna. She looked beautiful—but also anxious. “But as soon as she made it up to the altar she calmed down,” he says. As Brandon slipped an Art Deco Yoshi ring from Brilliant Earth onto Anna’s finger, and she gave him a titanium ring made from a melted down SR-71 Blackbird airplane, the couple knew they would cherish their entire journey as husband and wife. Brandon remembers thinking something else: “Anna is the best person I’ve ever known. I’m lucky she chose me.”

connected,” Anna says. She knew she wanted a full Catholic ceremony, mass included, to start their new life together. The reception venue was also an easy decision. “I grew up going to Oglebay Park with my family for picnics, golfing, concerts, and dances. My brother, sister, and I have worked at Oglebay over all of our summer breaks,” Anna says. “It is a beautiful place and reminds me of home.” Brandon was pretty easygoing about the wedding plans. Other than not wanting to wear black—and a request to incorporate the “Blade Runner” soundtrack into the reception— his only requirement was that the wedding be fun. “I wanted everyone to have a low-stress good time,” he says. “A significant number of people were traveling to Wheeling, so it was important that their weekend count as a good vacation, too.”

emeralds, lace, and a special place

The wedding party arrived at the Cathedral of St. Joseph by noon. The crisp, early-October day featured plenty of sunshine and just enough color in the trees to serve as the perfect backdrop for photos by The Oberports of Charleston. Brandon chose light gray tuxedos with vests and white shirts for himself and his groomsmen. To accent his look, he picked a Ralph Lauren Black Label tie and airplane propeller cufflinks. Anna and her attendants wore emerald green satin shoes and earrings. The

Featuring ivory table linens and vintage and mercury glass accents, the wedding reception at Oglebay Resort & Conference Center’s Glessner Auditorium showcased much of the same traditional feel accented with an Art Deco and travel theme. “The ceilings were draped in fabric and lace, creating a cascading arch,” Anna says. “For the table names, we used Art Deco images of different cities we have traveled to. Guest name cards were baggage tags with airport codes from different cities on each corresponding table.” Accented with vintage luggage and a globe, the guest book table featured a map for people to pin locations they had traveled from. “We had family from California, Idaho, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, D.C., Texas, and Chicago—literally from all over.” Wedding favors doubled as a guest activity. They were given instruction kits engineered by Brandon to make paper airplanes and fly them during the reception. Guests were later gifted with coffee packaged in emerald green bags and finished with homemade tags. A cocktail hour featured Brandon’s signature drink, Jet Fuel, and Anna’s Mountain Mama. Later, guests enjoyed a buffet dinner and a three-tiered white cake filled with espresso crème and topped with fresh flowers. The new Mr. and Mrs. Jones were announced to the theme of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Rather than a traditional slow first dance, the couple danced around their family and friends to The Temptations’ “Sugar Pie Honey Bunch.” The dance party continued with movie theme songs and some of their parents’ favorite tunes. “We danced the night away,” Brandon says, adding that the event ended perfectly. “At the end of the reception, everyone from many different parts of my life all got in a circle and sang “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” mywvwedding.com | 63

now, when kara gilreath and brian higgins talk about their first date, it’s all giggles and nostalgia. They rib each other a little bit, remembering how awkward it was, but gently and lovingly. After all, that’s half the fun of being married to someone, isn’t it? You know your partner well enough to understand that the reason they seemed a little off that night way back when was because they were feeling nervous, not because they were being rude. But Kara and Brian didn’t always see it that way. When Kara caught up with a friend—the one who had set them up to begin with—a few days after their first date in 2012, she was not optimistic about her prospects with Brian. “I said, ‘There is zero percent chance that this will end in a romantic relationship,’” Kara recalls. It hadn’t gone well. They’d had one phone conversation before that date, and their chemistry had been almost too good—it made for a lot of pressure when they finally met in person. “I’d been like, ‘Oh, I’m intrigued by this person,’” Kara says. So she proposed dinner at Provence Market, an upscale French restaurant in Bridgeport. After work, she went home and showered for a second time that day, applied fresh makeup, and dressed to the nines. Brian recognized the significance of the occasion, too: He showed up with a single white rose. But then something fell flat. Brian clammed up. Kara talked a lot. “Here I was in this hot pink, magenta dress with wavy hair—I was intimidating,” she says. “And then I thought, ‘Geez, where is that I guy I talked to the other day?’” Brian chimes in, laughing. “I was awesome in my own way,” he says. “We got along just fine, we just didn’t hit it off. We had good conversation, you know, when I could get a word in.” But after that date, when they’d given up on being romantically involved, they started hanging out as friends, often with larger groups of people. And, slowly, things changed. “We got to know each other without the pressure of dating,” Kara says. “We hung out and had conversations in the group—it was seeing his personality rather than getting caught up in this crazy romance thing, where you’re up in a cloud.” Six weeks after that first date, they went on a second date. Or maybe it would be better to call it the first date, take two. Kara and Brian already knew each other pretty well by then, so they weren’t so worried about impressing one another. Plus, this time, Brian had the home turf advantage—they went golfing at Pete Dye Golf Club, where he’s the golf professional. “All of a sudden we were in my domain, where I’m as comfortable as comfortable gets,” he says. That second date led to a third, and then a fourth, and so many more. They dated for around a year—the exact time span depends on which date you count as the first, or to whom you listen when you ask them to put an official start date on their relationship. But at any rate, by the fall of 2013, they were in love, and ready to take the next step.

the proposal

Sometime during their first months as a couple, Brian and Kara got to talking about what a good proposal looks like. “It always seems like a lot of work to tell all your friends and family, because you want to tell them all in person,” Kara says. The issue, she thinks, is that sometimes your closest family members live so far away that it’s tough to decide whom to tell first, especially in person. “So wouldn’t it be cool if there was an engagement party right away so you could share your news and celebrate with everyone at once?” Brian filed that idea away in his memory bank, and when it came time to propose he didn’t have to do a lot of guessing about what Kara would like. He covertly invited Kara’s family and friends to a big party the weekend of her birthday. She thought she was just having a simple dinner in Morgantown with Brian and her family. But then, on the way to dinner, Brian took a detour to Coopers Rock State Forest, which is famous for its gorgeous scenic overlook. They started wandering along some paths through the woods, all the while Brian was trying to hide the ring box in his pocket. “So I’m awkwardly walking around her thinking, ‘No, don’t put your arm around me, just hold my hand,’” he says. 66 | WV WEDDINGS Fall/Winter 2015

The Confluence Resort in Fayette County made a stunning, if unusual, backdrop for the fall

wedding of Kara Gilreath and Brian Higgins when fog rolled in and obsured the location’s more

typical mountain views. But instead of dampening spirits, the fog pushed all eyes to the couple.

Kara and Brian describe their wedding as a marathon planning session. Each detail was well-thoughtout, from the family heirlooms

strewn throughout the dĂŠcor to the desserts of French macarons to the invitations featuring the New River Gorge Bridge.

Finally, he navigated her to a private spot in the trees. “And we’re standing there looking out, and he was behind me,” Kara says. “And I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m going to turn around and he’s going to be on his knee.’” She turned around expectantly and he was just standing there. It wasn’t the right moment. But Kara’s intuition wasn’t far off, because just a few minutes later Brian asked her to sit down on a rock and knelt down on one knee. Afterward, the couple went on to what Kara thought was her birthday dinner, but was in fact a pre-planned engagement party with their closest friends and family.

the plans

“It was a marathon,” Kara says. She’s detail-oriented and describes herself as a planner, so she didn’t take a lackadaisical approach to her big day. “When I go to do something, it’s

going to have my name on it,” she says. “It’s done right.” She spent hours planning every little detail, in between her fulltime job as a nutritionist and running a part-time consulting business. But don’t misunderstand: Kara wasn’t Bridezilla. It wasn’t about having things exactly the way she wanted that day. No, she wanted her wedding day to be filled with small, special moments for everyone. “It became about family heirlooms and making it special and important for so many of the most important people in our lives,” she says. For the venue the couple settled on The Confluence Resort, an outdoor venue in Fayette County, which allowed them freedom to configure and decorate it any way they liked. And Kara took full advantage of that. “It was unreal how many things were decorated and thought out,” Brian says. “I was with her the whole time she was planning it, and I still didn’t know about it all.”

Flowers by Bessie’s Floral Designs in Oak Hill made stunning additions to the already beautiful landscape.

mywvwedding.com | 69

Kara and Brian describe their wedding day

as a spiritual experience shared with family and friends.

There were a lot of little things: Kara asked family members for their wedding photos and made a table filled with framed photos of each bride. “I wanted them to feel involved,” she says. She had her and Brian’s initials added to the knife her parents used to cut their wedding cake, and then used it to cut their own. Before their walk down the aisle, Kara surprised her dad with the handkerchief his father carried when he walked Kara’s aunt down the aisle. The invitations featured an original watercolor painting of the New River Gorge Bridge, which is near the wedding venue. White roses were woven into the altar where they were married—homage to the single flower Brian gave her on their very first date.

looking back

The day before the wedding, it rained—a lot. By morning the precipitation had let up, but it gave way to a deep, white fog that enveloped the landscape. Kara and Brian had expected to get married in front of a dramatic view of the West Virginia mountains, but instead all anyone could see was a blanket of white stretching in all directions. “It was hard to see her walking toward me, down the hill,” Brian says. “She appeared out of nowhere.” They’d planned on having their wedding in the mountains; instead they had it in the clouds. But the fog didn’t damper the scenery—it enhanced it. “There was something almost spiritual about it,” Kara says. “It made you really hone in on what was going on. You weren’t distracted by anything else because you couldn’t see anything else. I think it set the tone for everybody to be really present during the ceremony.” Kara couldn’t help but comment on the beauty of her surroundings as she walked down the aisle. “What I envisioned planning the whole thing couldn’t have measured up to what we got in real life.” 70 | WV WEDDINGS Fall/Winter 2015
