DESIGN I / FALL 10 CRITIC / JOEB MOORE PROGRAMS / “FRESH DIRECT” DISTRIBUTION CENTER COLD STORAGE COMMUNITY KITCHEN RESTAURANT SITE / LA MARQUETA PARK AVENUE BETWEEN E115TH & E116TH ST Examining the two “temperatures” on site - environmental temperature and social temperature - the proposed mixed-use complex creates a series of programs with gradience of temperatures that harbors the existing cascading site.

CIRCULATION
Projecting the barcodes generated from previous planar and sectional analysis onto the existing cascading site forms a set of wireframes.
Connecting the wireframes into a series of intertwined stripes that is to denote the future circulation within the programs.

PROGRAM NESTING
ENVELOPE
Echoing again with the descending site, floors within the circulation coincides with, casts into or floats above the existing levels.
Enclosures are provided for programs above the train track; and partitions are provided below train track to maintain the openness as a welcoming gesture for the community.

ORIGAMI COSMO A revolving movie theatre lobby
“There is no one substance, only an alwaysdifferentiating process, an origami cosmo, always folding, unfolding, refolding. ~ Gilles Deleuze
- 14 -
PARTS, RHYTHM, AND WHOLES / SPRING 11 CRITIC / PETER ZUSPAN PROGRAMS / MOVIE THEATRE LOBBY Drawing inspiration from fractals’ ability to evolve with time, the lobby is constructed via folding a single sheet of bristol and laminating plywood and acetate to provide structural support. What if the movie theatre lobby changes with regards to how long you’ve waited for your movie?

DESIGN II / SPRING 11 CRITIC / DAVID SMILEY SITE / PIKE ST NEW YORK, NY PROGRAMS / BIKE RENTAL, REPAIR SHOP, CARTOGRAPHY MUSEUM The knot is a representation of the tensions between the archive as “old” and the movement system as “new.” In the knot, each program is affected and informed by the other. This new civic interaction is a way of bringing the often “dead” stacks into the public realm, and bringing the public closer to the older representations.

SURFACE DE-LAMINATION
A piece of complex urban fabric with interweaving traffic conditions of bikes, pedestrians and vehicles.
Separating each thread of horizontal traffic and bringing them into different levels of ground.

MULTIPLE VIEWING EXPERIENCE
“KNOT” - CIRCULATION/EXHIBITION
Bringing together traffic and exhibition to create new viewing experience.
Two intertwining threads form a central knot that performs as the core of the building.

PATTERNS AND STRUCTURE / FALL 11 CRITIC / ADAM MARCUS PROGRAMS / RAINSCREEN An autonomous rainscreen is essentially a response to an in-situ climate condition. “Site contains information collected via data streaming application, and subsequently determines the openings and foldings via a Grasshopper definition. Drawing inspiration from the surface of an origami, the project consists of modular panels that provides shading and ventilation accordingly.

It also enhances visual connection between the atrium and the rest of campus.

META MICRO-CLIMATE A self-operating SPA on the traffic median
- 46 -
DESIGN I / FALL 2010 CRITIC / JANETTE KIM SITE / MEDIAN ON PARK AVE BETWEEN E52ND & E53RD ST PROGRAMS / SPA - SAUNA, HOT TUB, STEAM, MASSAGE & CHANGING ROOM Creating a “micro-climate” of its own, the spa maximizes solar power on site through a relocation of programs according to their energy consumption levels. It consists of a series of intersecting spheres with rotating linings and furnishing, providing a flexible interior space as well as privacy necessary for its location.
- 47 -
(UP) HOURLY SHADOW STUDY JUNE 22 (LEFT) MONTHLY SHADOW STUDY 2010 A shadow study of the site over the course of a day and a year identifies the areas with different levels of solar exposure, which determines the location of programs with corresponding energy requirements.
