INDEX OF SIRES
Dear friends, Welcome to the 2010 World Wide Sires Beef Sire Directory!
ANGUS
2010 represents the beginning of a “New Era” for World Wide Sires in the Beef Artificial Breeding industry in Australia. From the resources of Accelerated Genetics and Select Sires who are both leaders in the World Beef Genetics, World Wide Sires are pleased to offer the Australian Beef industry an expanded product and breed range. Our goal is to provide a range of genetics that will not only increase the profitability of your herd but also add to the longevity of your breeding nucleus. With a strong focus on balanced EPD’s and Indexes we also place lot of emphasise on other traits such as: • • • •
Docility Mature Size Structural Correctness Fleshing Ability
We don’t only research individual sires, we research their Sire, Dam and Siblings, assessing all the traits listed above which can’t always be measured in an EPD or Index. The reliability of highly accurate data submitted on sires is extremely important. We research not only the individual bulls, but also the people and the programs behind the bulls. Another important factor we always consider is the size of contemporary groups. Many of our successful proven sires and young sires of the future have been sourced from breeders in the USA who run large herds and manage large contemporary groups and submit highly accurate data. World Wide Sires has the resources of not only our professional staff here in Australia, we also access to the resources of the highly trained and respected staff from the Beef Dept’s at both Select Sires and Accelerated Genetics. Our team are committed to providing the Australian Beef industry with products, knowledge and service to enhance the productivity and profitability in your breeding goals. All the best for a great season in 2010. Regards

EPDs…THE BEST PREDICTOR OF FRAME SIZE by Dr. Aaron Arnett and Natalie Miller, Select Sires Beef Department, Plain City, Ohio, USA When selecting bulls to use in your breeding program, there are a variety of selection tools available. Some breeders put emphasis on Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) or actual performance data, while others may select bulls based on pedigrees or phenotype. However, breeders are encouraged to utilize EPDs as their main genetic prediction tool. In the process of choosing a bull, breeders sometimes assume that the bull with the most desirable actual performance will produce the most desirable progeny. Although a sire’s individual measurements and performance of his progeny are related, these relationships are inconsistent and difficult to predict. An EPD takes into account not only the bull’s own performance, but also the performance of his ancestors, siblings, and progeny, making an EPD the single best estimate of progeny performance.
Rito 1I2 and 7AN258 TC Total. These bulls share the same mature height (57.5 inches) but they have very different EPDs for YH (Table 1). For example, when two groups of cattle with similar genetics and management are randomly mated to these two bulls, you would expect calves sired by TC Total to be an average of one-half inch (or ¼ frame score) taller at a year of age. When selecting bulls for any trait, including stature and frame size, it is imperative to use genetic prediction tools such as EPDs and EBVs. Using the actual mature height of the bull as a selection tool decreases the accuracy of selection vs. EPDs. Using both the EPD and the actual mature height overemphasizes the bull’s own performance and underemphasizes the performance of relatives and progeny. Breeders should focus on using EPDs as their main selection tool whenever possible in order to achieve maximum genetic progress.
Even the most disciplined breeders are sometimes tempted to use a bull’s mature height to predict frame score of his progeny. However, a bull’s actual mature height is somewhat influenced by environmental factors and management practices. Beef breeders are strongly encouraged to use EPD measurements such as Yearling Height (YH) and Mature Height to ensure they are making the most genetic progress to meet their goals. The YH EPD, reported in inches, is calculated using hip height measurements taken when the bull is around one year of age. Yearling Height EPD has a strong positive correlation to mature height (.8), making the YH Table 1. Comparison of two Select Sires Angus Sires for EPD very useful when selecting for Yearling Height EPD vs. Mature Hip Height mature frame size. Yearling Height EPD Accuracy Mature Hip Height Two Select Sires bulls that sort their TC Total +.6 .92 57.5 in. way to the top of the list for larger stature and mature size are 7AN234 Rito 1I2 +.1 .95 57.5 in. SAV Birthstone 8258 continues to shine as the $80,000 top-selling Bismarck bull in the 2009 SAV Sale. He presents an EPD profile that places him near the top of the entire Angus population. It is rare to find a genuine calving-ease bull with as much thickness, muscle, performance and quality. Birthstone earned a 205-day weight of 909 lbs. and a 365-day weight of 1448 lbs. and scanned a 365-day REA of 15.5 inches, while earning an IMF ratio of 127 and a yearling scrotal measurement of 42 cm. His superb dam is a full sister to Predominant from the prolific Emblynette family. She records a birth ratio of 93 on 4 calves and a progeny IMF ratio of 119 and REA ratio of 105 and EPDs or weaning and yearling weights in the breed’s top 1%. TERMINOLOGY Using Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) is the fastest way to make genetic improvement in beef cattle. Breed associations calculate EPDs using vast amounts of data collected on economically important traits. The power of this data is tremendous. EPD values are derived from: 1. 2. 3. 4.
The individual’s own performance record Progeny records Records of other relatives in the pedigree Genetic correlations of traits
As progeny records are added to a sire’s record, the accuracy of the EPD increases. EPDs values are not exact and actual progeny differences will vary from the predicted values. Breeders are encouraged to use proven bulls with high accuracies more heavily than young bulls with low accuracies.
YW - Yearling Weight EPD predicts the difference in average 365-day weight and is reported in pounds. YH - Yearling Height (Angus) - The YH EPD predicts the difference in yearling hip height. Reported in inches, ideal values vary depending on production goals and desired mature size of animals. SC - Scrotal Circumference - The SC EPD predicts the difference in yearling scrotal circumference of a bull’s male progeny. Reported in centimeters, a larger number is desirable. CEM or MCE - Calving Ease Maternal is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births of a sire’s daughters as first-calf heifers. Reported as a percentage, a higher value is desirable.
Although the EPDs reported in sire summaries might vary by breed, most breed associations commonly report these traits:
Milk - The milk EPD predicts the difference in average 205-day weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves. Reported in pounds, ideal milk values depend heavily upon the nutritional environment of the herd.
Calving Ease Birth Weight Weaning Weight Yearling Weight Scrotal Circumference Milk Carcass Traits
MWW - Maternal Weaning Weight (Simmental); M&G - Milk and Growth (Hereford); TM - Total Maternal (Red Angus) - The EPD predicts the Weaning Weight of a bull’s daughters’ progeny and reflects both the milking ability of a bull’s daughters and the growth potential of their calves. Reported in pounds, higher numbers are generally desirable.
EPD - Expected Progeny Difference - The expected difference in performance of an animal’s progeny compared to the expected performance of another’s progeny. EPDs are meaningless until they are compared to EPDs of another animal. For example, if Sire A has a birth weight EPD of 4.0 and Sire B has a birth weight EPD of -2.0, then calves from Sire B would be expected to average 6 pounds lighter at birth than calves from Sire A if the bulls are randomly mated in the same herd. EPDs are designed to compare sires within the same breed.
$EN - Cow Energy Value (Angus), expressed in dollars saved per cow per year, the EPD assesses differences in cow energy requirements for daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). $EN savings differences account for lactation energy requirements and mature size of cows.
Acc. - Accuracy - A measure of reliability of an EPD expressed between 0 and 1.0. Accuracies closer to 1.0 means the EPD is a more reliable estimate of a sire’s true genetic value for the trait. % Rank - Based on percentages, this indicates where an EPD ranks in the breed population. CED or CE - Calving Ease Direct is the difference in percentage of unassisted births when a sire is bred to heifers. A higher number is desirable. BW - Birth Weight EPD predicts the difference in average birth weight. Reported in pounds, a lower number is desirable and is associated with increased calving ease. WW - Weaning Weight EPD predicts the difference in average 205-day weight. Reported in pounds, a higher number is desirable.
Stay - Stayability (Red Angus & Simmental) - The stayability EPD predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters staying in production to at least six years of age. Reported as a percentage, a higher value is desirable. Carcass Traits - Carcass EPDs are calculated for carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area and fat thickness using weighted averages of yearling ultrasounds and progeny carcass data. Economic Indexes - designed to exploit the value and convenience of multi-trait selection, economic indexes merge several EPDs into a single value and are expressed in US dollars. Several breeds publish economic indexes that are often associated with a specific phase of production or a suite of traits for which the breed excels. Examples include growth, maternal ability, carcass merit and combinations of these.
