(Registration for the Bee will be limited to the first 100 entry applications received. The Bee is for 3 , 4 & th 5 graders whose principal residence is in the Walla Walla Valley.)
No contestant will be admitted to the Bee after the first word is given. In competition, after the Beemeister gives the contestant a word, the contestant will pronounce the word before spelling it. After starting to spell a word, the contestant may stop and start over, retracing the spelling from the beginning; but in retracing, there can be no change of letters and their sequence from those first pronounced. If letters and their sequence are changed in the respell, the speller will be eliminated. Contestants will not be eliminated for misspelling words during the practice round. Thereafter, it will be a single-elimination competition. The elimination procedure changes when there are two contestants remaining. When one contestant misspells a word, the other contestant will be given the opportunity to spell that same word. If the second contestant spells the word correctly, plus the next word on the Beemeister’s list, then he/she will be declared the Spelling Bee champion. If one of the last two contestants misspells a word, and the other, after correcting the error, misspells the new word submitted to him/her, the misspelled new word will be referred to the first contestant. If the first contestant then succeeds in correcting the error and correctly spells the next word on the Beemeister’s list, then he/she will be declared the champion. If both remaining contestants misspell the same word, both will continue in the contest. The contestant who first misspelled the word will be given a new word to spell. The contest will then continue. If a word has one or more homonyms, the Beemeister will indicate which word is to be spelled by providing the definition. Anyone wishing to challenge the spelling of a word must do so before the Beemeister proceeds to the spelling of the next word. If two sessions are required for a grade level, the top two (2) spellers from each session will move on to a grade level spell off.
NOTE: All contestants will be given at least two words from the study lists provided (see below for website locations or check with your local school to obtain study lists). Subsequent words may not necessarily be from the study lists. Day of the event parking: Please allow enough time to find parking prior to scheduled Session – it is Balloon Stampede weekend!
