Cut costs on your next home improvement project

With the economy still on the mend, homeowners must monitor their spending carefully. Such frugality is necessary across the board, even when it comes to home improvement. While it’s important not to cut too many corners when it comes to home improvement projects, there are ways homeowners can save money without sacrificing safety and quality. • Scale things down. A full-scale kitchen remodel might be a dream project, but homeowners wary of committing too much money to a project might want to consider a smaller scale project. For example, instead of revamping the entire kitchen, address a single part of the kitchen, such as replacing vinyl flooring or refacing the cabinets. Such projects don’t require the financial commitment of a full-scale remodel but can give the kitchen a whole new look. • Chip in. Many home improvement projects are best left to the professionals. However, much of the cost of such projects goes toward labor, including preparation before the project and cleanup once it’s finished. When interviewing contractors, ask if there is any prep work you can do to reduce labor costs and if there’s a way to handle cleanup yourself. Cleanup might be somewhat tricky, as certain materials might

need to be disposed of in accordance to local laws. But prep work might be easily handled by homeowners and garner substantial savings. • Shop around. In the current market, homeowners looking to make improvements must recognize the market benefits them. Shop around for a contractor and get some competitive offers. While it’s not always best to choose the contractor who submits the lowest estimate, the nature of the current market suggests all contractors should submit competitive offers and be flexible. Flexibility might come with a few conditions, such as more time to complete the project, but those conditions might be worth it if it means saving money. • Make sacrifices in other areas. Safety and quality should always trump cost when it comes to home improvement projects. If there aren’t too many ways to save money on a given project, make sacrifices in other areas and factor those sacrifices into the budget for the project. Instead of a summer vacation at a resort, visit a nearby hotspot that provides the same R&R but for a fraction of the cost of a more expensive resort. Such sacrifices don’t have to be permanent, but they can help weather the financial storm until the project is successfully completed.

Roughly 45 million turkeys are sold and cooked for Thanksgiving meals every year in the United States. As families dig into that delicious meal, some may wonder more about the delicious bird before them. Here are some known and lesserknown facts about Tom Turkey. • The taste of turkeys has to do with their age. An older male is preferable to a younger male, because the young “tom” is stringy. Conversely, younger female hens are preferred to older ones. • A turkey less than 16 weeks old is called a fryer. An older turkey between 5 and 7 months of age is known as a roaster. • Turkeys are a type of pheasant. They are the only breed of poultry native to the Western Hemisphere. • Wild turkeys are able to fly for short durations and up to 55 mph. However, domesticated turkeys raised on farms for food are bred to be fat and meaty, which prevents their ability to get airborne. • The turkey is no exception to other birds. Sometimes it likes to spend the night in trees. • Benjamin Franklin was one person who argued vehemently on behalf of the turkey being the national symbol of America. However, as most know, the bald eagle won out. • The first turkeys to domesticated were from Mexico and Central America. In Mexico, the turkey was a sacrificial bird. • Male turkeys make the commonly known “gobble” sound, particularly during breeding seasons to attract a mate. Females, however, cluck. • A mature turkey will have about 3,500 feathers. That’s a lot of plucking to do before the bird can be eaten. • Minnesota and North Carolina produce the most turkeys for sale annually. • The skin that hangs from a turkey’s neck is known as a wattle. The fleshy growth on the base of the beak is known as the snood. • Every year 90 percent of Americans enjoy a turkey dinner for Thanksgiving, compared to 50 percent on Christmas. • America doesn’t consume the most turkey per capita; Israel does.

Learning disabilities, hearing loss, speech delays, violent behavior and, in rare cases, seizures and even death: these are just some of the effects lead paint poisoning has on young children. If your home was built before 1978, lead paint on your walls, doors, windows and sills may be dangerous. And it’s not just large paint chips that can cause damage. In fact, three granules of lead dust are enough to poison your child. Let’s make all kids lead-free kids. Turkey Leftovers The Family Will Want to Eat

It’s easy to have leftover turkey once the Thanksgiving holiday has passed. Many people miscalculate the number of pounds of turkey they need to feed the family, or an excess of side dishes makes Tom Turkey less of the culinary centerpiece he should be. Don’t worry if you’re one of the people left with an abundance of turkey. There are plenty of ways to turn it into delicious meals to be enjoyed for several days after the holiday. To enjoy turkey leftovers, first the remaining turkey should be prepared and stored so it can be safely eaten later on. This means that turkey should be deboned and packed up for storage no later than two hours after the bird has been served, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. Generally, leftover turkey can be enjoyed 3 to 4 days after Thanksgiving if it is refrigerated. If the meat is frozen, it can last much longer. Now comes the time to whip up delicious recipes from that remaining turkey. Here are some ideas to whet the appetite. • Turkey chili: Combine the meat with kidney beans, red and green peppers, onions, pureed tomato and a package of chili seasonings from the supermarket. Let simmer and serve with corn bread or over rice. • Turkey kabobs: Thread turkey on skewers with apples, pears or pineapples. Bake until meat is reheated and fruit is soft. • Turkey gyro: Top pitas with turkey meat, lettuce, onion, and fresh tzatziki sauce. Tzatziki is made by mixing chopped cucumber, garlic and lemon juice with a thick Greek yogurt. • Turkey omelets: Chop up turkey and add it to the egg mixture when making omelets. Serve with toast spread with cranberry sauce. • Turkey pot pie: Line a pie tin with homemade or store-bought pie crust. Add the turkey, half a can of cream of chicken soup, a package of thawed mixed vegetables, and the remaining pie crust. Bake until the pot pie is bubbly and hot. • Turkey Mexican-style: Replace the meat in tacos, fajitas or enchiladas with leftover turkey. • Buffalo turkey pizza: Toss leftover turkey with melted butter and hot sauce. Use the seasoned meat on top of a homemade or pre-made pizza. Bake and enjoy. • Turkey-tossed pasta: Add strips of turkey to a dish of pasta, topped with a favorite sauce. • Turkey panini: Slice a thick, crusty bread and spread the outsides with butter. Add layers of turkey, cheese and cooked bacon. Cook on a griddle, using a heavy pan to hold the panini flat while cooking. Flip over and continue to cook until panini is golden brown and cheese is melted. • Pulled pork-style turkey: Chop up or pull apart leftover turkey meat. Toss with your favorite barbecue sauce. Serve on soft sandwich buns with a side of cole slaw. • Turkey salad sandwich: Mix chopped turkey with mayonnaise or salad dressing, diced celery, onions, and shredded carrots for a refreshing cold sandwich filling. • Turkey and vegetable stir-fry: Heat a wok or skillet with a little oil and saute onions, garlic and favorite stir-fry vegetables. Add the turkey to heat and season with soy sauce or teriyaki. Serve over steamed rice.

Fire Extinguisher Know-How

Fire extinguishers are an important safety component in any home or building. They can mean the difference between a devastating fire or a minor incident. Although a fire extinguisher in the hands of a trained adult can be a life- and property-saving tool, many people are not properly skilled in the use of fire extinguishers. A large portion of the public has not received training on fire extinguisher use and when to use them. Sometimes the use of the wrong extinguisher can exacerbate a fire, as there are different fire extinguishers for different types of fires. Learning when and where to use an extinguisher can be a matter of life and death.

Type of Extinguisher

Not all fires are alike, and fires started from different materials require the use of different extinguishing agents to safely and quickly put the fire out. There are five different types of extinguishers, and generally each will feature a symbol to show the applicable fire on which they can be used. Class A: These are used on ordinary substances, like cloth, wood, paper, and plastics. Class B: These extinguishers are used on fires that feature flammable liquids, such as oil-based paints or gasoline. Class C: These extinguishers are used on electrical equipment, such as tools or appliances that are plugged in. Class D: Commonly found in specific factories, these extinguishers are used on flammable metals. Class K: Combustible cooking materials, like animal oils and fats, can be extinguished with this agent. They are commonly found in commercial kitchens, but are now infiltrating residential markets as well. Multipurpose: Some extinguishers combine different agents so they are applicable for a range of fires.

When to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Small fires may be smothered with an extinguisher. If the fire has spread or is already large in size, it’s likely only a trained firefighter can handle the blaze. Only use a fire extinguisher in these circumstances. 1. The fire is small and contained. 2. You have already called the fire department. 3. There is little chance of being consumed by toxic smoke. 4. You can escape safely if necessary. 5. The fire is not between you and the escape route. 6. You are physically able to carry its weight and exert the necessary pressure to operate it. Fire extinguishers should be routinely inspected and maintained to ensure they will be effective. Some need to be shaken to keep the dry chemicals from settling. Others need to have the pressure at the correct level. An extinguisher may need to be recharged or replaced if it is damaged. Individuals can talk with firefighters about possible training courses in the use of fire extinguishers. This will help a person know the correct way to handle and activate an extinguisher should it need to be used.
