BINSA all comings ... ...your voices... Comings ...

Great to have you here Tegan and we hope BINSA can compliment the formal study elements.

Shaneen Renshaw - Coordinator Community Learning and Lifeskills ...Staff Kelly Weckert - Coordinator RTP Kelly has been promoted into the solo position of Coordinator RTP, following the departure of Lauren Moulds (with our very best wishes for a bright future in her chosen profession, Lauren has taken up a senior position with DCSI in clinical behavioural management). This is a great opportunity for Kelly to continue to develop this very important program and work with a small team in developing new RTP options, including a youth RTP (yRTP) - in conjunction with NOVITA and TAFESA, as well as broadening our regional express RTP program too. Congrats Kelly, we look forward to continuing the success of RTP, and negotiating with MAC for new funding from 2013-14.

Charlotte Rasmussen - CoAssistant Coordinator RTP Charlotte is currently undertaking her 3rd year Degree in Social Work and Social Planning at Flinders Uni and has been on student placement with BINSA for 490 hours - a time in which Charlotte proved herself to be not only an exemplary student but also someone who just merged seamlessly into all our work - always very willing to try anything. Charlotte now brings to BINSA both her professional skills as well as her already demonstrated dedication and commitment to assisting people with a disability, and will provide a focus on younger people becoming involved win all that RTP offers. And Charlotte is also one of our ongoing hybrid of employee and occassional volunteer - that’s really so appreciated thanks heaps.

Tegan Whittard - Co-Assistant Coordinator RTP Tegan has joined BINSA in the other CoAssistant Coordinator RTP role - and was a very strong candidate for that position. Tegan is currently involved with 3rd year Psychology Studies at UniSA. Along with these studies, Tegan has a very varied employment background, which will bring some fresh eyes and ideas to RTP and the participants who will gain from her expertise in this role. Like Charlotte, Tegan is also looking forward to increasing the number of younger participants in the RTP courses.

Shaneen has joined BINSA and has both professional qualifications in Community Services as well as many years experience and skills in community development and working with people with a disability and also significant disadvantage. BINSA is very pleased to welcome Shaneen into what might be a small but certainly one of our most important community based programs. Community Learning and Lifeskills program includes a number of elements: Coffee Clubs, Buddy Match, specialist topic forums, some regional outreach facilitation, general community capacity building - all focused on those affected by an ABI. We are very grateful for the funding we receive from DCSI to assist the many individuals who are able to involve themselves in the variety of activity offered each week. Shaneen will be reviewing the current offerings and will be looking into expanding the options and also supporting the existing activities - and that includes the city based coffee club and the ‘reconfigured’ buddy match activity. So a very big welcome to Shaneen - we all look forward to benefiting from her knowledge and skills in supporting and developing options for our ABI community.

Disability reforms 2012 has been a very busy year for us here at BINSA and across the whole of the disability sector, as we welcomed major reforms to support and the services available for anyone with a disability. The proposed National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will we hope finally bring about the equity of access to benefits and service entitlements for those who suffer a disability, regardless of how this has occurred. BINSA along with the other state and national agencies that represent brain injury has been very involved with national consultations and ensuring your voices and views are being heard – see the Brain Injury Australia (BIA) website for more information www.bia.net.au So now that the draft legislation is in federal parliament we have the opportunity to continue to shape it – so do please have a look and make comments and add your perspectives so everyone’s views are heard - thus informing the final drafting and then ultimately the legislation - shaped by all of us. Here is the website to follow: http://www.ndis.gov.au/towards/ndisdraft-legislation/ Remember too that in SA there is ongoing consultation about the proposed changes to the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) motor vehicle insurance - to move from a ‘fault’ scheme to a partial ‘no fault’ scheme with all catastrophic injured covered – as well as some other changes. BINSA has submitted a very measured but supportive position - if we can succeed in gaining cover for those currently uninsured due to no fault that will be a significant outcome for all SA’s - up to 25% of anyone who suffers a road transport injury through no fault is uncovered by CTP insurance - that’s inequitable! So - please do add your comments – here is the website for more information and opportunities to add your voice: http://www.mac.sa.gov.au/motor_ injury_insurance/reforms_to_ctp

What’s happening at BINSA on the ‘Square’? Executive Officer Reporting ...that was 2012..

NGOs 5 Critical Elements a real constituency skilled Board/staff/

well informed

volunteers

At a recent conference I was invited to discuss how BINSA as an NGO was able to support complex clients - in particular those with a triple diagnosis - that’s where an individual may have an ABI, mental health issues and also drug and alcohol problems - requiring highly professional clinical and allied health support and rehabilitation. BINSA is often called upon by a number of clients who need counselling, advocacy and potentially a range of other informed support and understanding. My view was that to be relevant there were certain principles/elements that any NGO has to satisfy. Then it needs to be able to demonstrate that it has sufficient ‘internal’ infrastructure - that is - able to provide complex responses to complex needs. To do that it needed to have sufficient funding, services and programs that allow a complex client to be supported through a range of social and individual needs - not clinical in our case - but undertaken by professionally qualified staff and supported by a strategic outlook and operational priorities that place an NGO in the centre of key influence for a specific client/ constituency group. In 2012 - following 20 years of dedicated service and progressive building of programs and support through the funding we gratefully receive from: • • •

SA Department Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FAHCSIA) Motor Accident Commission (MAC)

BINSA has built a very responsive organisation able to meet the needs of clients and participants who require this level of service. In doing that it has retained its core value that it is a totally inclusive and community based organisation which invites and welcomes many to assist its work. Happy Christmas & NY

BINSA 2012 AGM Chair’s Report Having joined the Committee of Management (COM) as Chair in the early part of 2012, I have been privileged to serve with members where everyone is passionate about BINSA and the services it provides. Through my role, I spend time with Mariann McNamara, our highly professional and experienced Executive Officer, who alongside her team, is equally passionate and dedicated to BINSA. It is an exciting time for BINSA with a number of changes made at a strategic level currently taking place. The COM has been through a renewal of membership and I would like to take time at this point to thank Geoff Pritchard for his outstanding long service as the BINSA Treasurer. His professional skills helped to steer the organisation through some very tough times over his 13 year tenure. Thanks also to Megan Barratt for her services provided to BINSA including being our nominee on the Brain Injury Australia (BIA) Board for the past 18 months.

On behalf of the BINSA COM, I wish them the best for their future. I would like to welcome our new board members Karl Mortimer, Simon West, Terence O’Rourke and Cherie Archer, who have recently joined. Currently, the Board is undergoing governance training with Kate Costello of “Governance Matters” with changes to be made to the constitution shortly in order to update, refresh and bring it in line with BINSA’s current strategic goals. In the early part of 2013, the COM will bring these proposed changes of the constitution to members for their vote and notice will be provided in due course so many of you can be informed and involved in these fundamental decisions. The COM will then undergo strategic planning which will address and better position BINSA in this new era of disability services with the imminent introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The COM and I look forward to reporting on the outcome at the next AGM.

BINSA Programs and Services

Springboard Program Ready or not the end of year is here and It has been a year of many mile stones and celebrations. On the 5 December we celebrated the Graduation of Lee McEgan. Everyone at BINSA wishes Lee every success as he moves forward in his life and embraces the adventures ahead. Next year we will continue to achieve the program goals and seek out new ones. I would like to thank the participants, family members volunteers and staff for their continued commitment and support that has made the Springboard program such a wonderful place to be. A special thank you to all the drivers without whom our participants would not be able to attend. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy and safe New Year. May you all return well rested, refreshed and ready for a great 2013. Take care Victoria Zelipski Springboard Coordinator

Counselling

Increasing Counselling services to two days a week, has allowed more quality time with people and more comprehensive and beneficial interactions with clients. While some of the problems that arise are widely varied, they all have some common ABI factors, which, when examined separately from the issue(s) at hand, have a lot of explanatory power and can often lead to some acceptance or even resolution around those previously (seemingly) insurmountable problems. It is a rewarding to inform, mediate, clarify and offer alternatives to BINSA clients and other services where appropriate. Please, if you have anything you wish to discuss, clarify or just get off your chest, feel free to contact Chris on 8217 7601 Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday or chris@binsa.org.

Chris Farrand – Counsellor

Community Learning & Lifeskills

Heading into 2013, Community Learning and Lifeskills (CL & L) is looking to take on a new face, now that Shaneen Renshaw has joined BINSA expand (CL & L). While Chris Farrand will continue to provide support to Shaneen and some CL & L services such as the Assuming Control

course and Carers Get-Together, Shaneen will be overseeing the coffee groups, with the hopeful resurgence of the Northern Coffee group (pending numbers). and perhaps one in the Western suburbs, again dependent on interest. CL & L is also looking to provide some interesting workshops and forums in the new-year as well as coordinating the Buddy Match, matching people with an ABI with selected volunteers to engage with social and community activities and in turn empower each individual. If you would like any further information on any of the above, please contact Shaneen Renshaw on Thursdays, on 8217 7605 or shaneen@binsa.org Please note if you do leave a message then Shaneen will reply when she returns each Thursday, so if it is urgent then please call the general number 8217 7600 Shaneen Renshaw – Coordinator C&LL ___________________ _____________________________________

Advocacy

The last three months has seen a continuous stream of new referrals a sizeable number of which have had the theme of inappropriate accommodation placement particularly that of younger people with ABI’s in older peoples’ nursing/residential homes. In addition there are still a number of ‘live’ cases which deal with such issues as; capacity and choice, lobbying to help improve inadequate levels of support and helping people with housing and financial issues. Some cases have been resolved, thankfully to client’s satisfaction, and the service has managed to pro actively apply pressure to decision makers to ensure that the needs of our clients are met and that our clients receive a good quality service from their service providers. I hope that the festive season proves to be both peaceful and happy for you all. Slainte! Paul - Advocate

Reconnect Transition Program (RTP) The latest RTP ran 11 September - 6 November and topics included tips and challenges, self-talk, communication, an extra session that focused on sexuality after ABI, mentors and participants alike were able to discuss this very personal topic in gender specific groups. The feedback received allows us to further develop RTP the remaining programs in 2013. It’s already helped us to focus in 2013 on a younger RTP group and regional express options.

RTP ALUMNI: In Oct the session was on Mindfulness and the relevance and benefits this may bring to people after ABI. Interested in attending a session? Contact us as below. There was a joint RTP and Assuming Control (AC) Alumni on 27 November with everyone “Reconnecting” with past participants and greeting the familiar and not so familiar faces. The new RTP Assistant Coordinators Charlotte and Tegan introduced themselves and were welcomed to the group. There was open discussion around anything and everything from RTP, to ABI, to recipes and to Christmas plans. The group reflected on the most important and / or beneficial thing that has happened in 2012, prompting a reaffirming and mutually inspirational time, with lots of networking and sharing. With your advice we look forward to growing and further developing the RTP and AC Alumni in 2013 - see the front page for relevant dates Jan to March 2013, noting that from Feb onwards all Alumni events will be held on the first Wednesday of the month. RTP Alumni needs a new name - help us by sending in your idea with the top 3 voted on at the Jan meeting. For all Alumni sessions / issues contact Chris Farrand on 8217 7601 or chris@binsa.org or Kelly kelly@binsa.org to rsvp or otherwise just come along!

Kelly Weckert RTP Co-ordinator
