MOTOR VEHICLE Section 5 – Policy 3 Date of Issue: January 2013 Date of Review: January 2015
Policy Statement The Brain Injury Network of South Australia Inc. (BINSA) owns and maintains a vehicle for use of the EO and where applicable, by staff while on the organisation’s business. Where an organisation’s vehicle is not available for business use, staff may use their own vehicle if they obtain the prior approval of the Executive Officer (EO) or delegated authority. Staff using their own vehicles for the organisation’s business are required to have adequate insurance coverage to cover damages to the vehicle, other property damage and injuries sustained by individuals as a result of an accident. Notwithstanding the above, a staff member who uses their vehicle to travel to and from their normal place of employment is not entitled to claim a motor vehicle allowance, unless it is an exceptional situation and is approved as per the relevant reimbursement procedures, but should utilise the provisions under the Income Tax Assessment Act. Employees can deduct the expenses incurred by using their motor vehicle in the course of their employment against their assessable income.
