BINSA’s Responsibilities to Volunteers The following general principles apply to all Volunteers. BINSA will: •
Create a climate of mutual respect
•
Provide a safe work environment and appropriate insurance cover
•
Ensure that volunteers are entitled to the same treatment and conditions as employees, and report to a clearly identified staff member who is responsible for their registration, monitoring and supervision
•
Ensure that the tasks required of Volunteers are meaningful and clearly defined. (See Volunteer information brochure.)
•
Match the tasks with expectations, interests and time commitments of Volunteers, as far as practicable
•
Provide appropriate training to enable each Volunteer to contribute safely to his or her greatest potential
•
Provide opportunities for input to policies relating to Volunteers
•
Provide comprehensive orientation to the program when volunteers commence working.
Confidentiality This means that any information BINSA has about a person must not be passed on to anyone else. It is imperative that any personal or identifying details learned or discussed about a participant in the execution of role as a volunteer at BINSA remain confidential. All new volunteers are required to read and sign a Confidentiality Agreement and Code of Ethics, Conduct and Conflict of Interests Agreement..\FORMS\Form 01 - New Staff Forms. Nos 1.1 and 1.2 Volunteer Rights Volunteers have the right to: •
Be treated fairly and with respect
•
Receive accurate information about the organization
•
Receive proper training, initially and in an on-going basis
•
Know who to approach with difficulties and problems
•
Be safe on the job
•
Be covered by insurance
•
Be able to negotiate
•
Be able to say no
•
Be informed on BINSA’s policy for the reimbursement of expenses
•
Be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses within a fortnight or at a mutually agreed time
•
Have your work valued by BINSA

Responsibilities of Volunteers Volunteers also have obligations and must be prepared to: •
Make realistic commitment and fulfill it
•
Acquaint themselves with the objectives, role and function of BINSA and the service they are providing
•
Undergo a National Criminal History check
•
Be reliable and arrive on time
•
Notify an appropriate person if you are unavailable or arriving late
•
Respect confidentiality
•
Respect the rights of other workers
•
Have a non-judgmental approach
•
Carry out the specified job
•
Give feedback which will assist the development of the program or service
•
Accept and acknowledge decisions made by staff members
•
Address areas of conflict or concern with the appropriate staff member
•
Exercise a Duty of Care in areas of Work, Health and Safety including informing others of potential or actual hazards
•
Give formal and, if possible, timely notice of your intention to leave the service/program
•
Care for BINSA equipment and property.
Work, Health and Safety Health and Safety Under the Work Health and Safety Legislation volunteers are deemed to be employees. As such, they have the same rights and responsibilities in relation to safe practices. Induction and training should ensure that volunteers can perform the task safely and can access the assistance of paid staff when necessary. Training/Orientation Volunteers will be provided with support and training to enable them to carry out agreed tasks. Job Conditions •

Volunteers are part of a team with opportunities for a two-way flow of information and ideas
•
Volunteers will work under the direction of the Program Coordinator.

Out of pocket Expenses Volunteers will receive a standard ‘out-of-pocket’ reimbursement when assisting BINSA as a volunteer. To facilitate this, bank account details are required. Record of attendance must be filled in. Pre-approval is required for additional out-of-pocket expenses to be paid. Access to Resources •
Photocopying, laminating, use of computers is available at the discretion of BINSA EO or Coordinator Administration

The work of volunteers will be clearly defined and mutually agreed upon.
Performance of Volunteers Guidelines and appropriate informal feedback will be given. Breaches of the Code of Conduct will be addressed in individual counselling sessions with the individual where appropriate or in serious instances by termination of the volunteer’s services. Complaints Complaints will be dealt with promptly, efficiently and in confidence in the same way as any staff grievance or complaint. Insurance BINSA has appropriate public liability and personal accident/sickness insurance cover.
