BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT Section 2 – Policy 5 Date of Issue: January 2013 Date of Review: January 2015
Overview The Brain Injury Network of SA Inc. (BINSA) is committed to providing behaviour support strategies and services to clients who display behaviours of concern, in order to maximise their independence and inclusion in the BINSA programs and activities.
Policy Statement BINSA recognises that the SA Guardianship Board, BINSA Committee of Management (COM) and/or the Office of the Public Advocate have a role in protecting the rights of people with disabilities. If there is any doubt about methods that are to be implemented, the BINSA Executive Officer (EO) will seek clarification from the COM or other professional advice as appropriate. BINSA believes that the following features are essential in developing an effective, non-aversive, educative approach to behaviour intervention and decreased behaviours of concern:
Individualised and accountable to the individual
Values-based, built on a foundation of appropriate management of environmental factors where possible and respect for the individual
Active intervention goals for the individual which increase positive behaviours
Quality of life outcomes for the individual which can be evidenced by increased, meaningful participation in scheduled programs or activities
Collaborative problem-solving approaches.
