BINSA Volunteer Policy Statement The Brain Injury Network of South Australia Inc. (BINSA) recognises the important role of volunteers, including Committee of Management (COM) and students on practicum placements. In addition, BINSA recognises that the harnessing of people’s time, interests and skills can provide benefits to the volunteers, to the persons or projects assisted, the organisation within which they work and to the community at large. BINSA values the various roles volunteers may play and how they can initiate, extend and enhance the services and programs BINSA offers. Volunteers Volunteers are essential to making our programs and services work. Volunteers bring the special gift of their time and their interest, and add to it the unique skills needed to implement all the program and services we have at BINSA. BINSA’s Responsibilities to Volunteers The following general principles apply to all Volunteers. BINSA will: • • • • • • • •

Create a climate of mutual respect Provide a safe work environment and appropriate insurance cover Ensure that Volunteers are entitled to the same treatment and conditions as employees, and report to a clearly identified staff member who is responsible for their registration, monitoring and supervision Ensure that the tasks required of Volunteers are meaningful and clearly defined Match the tasks with expectations, interests and time commitments of Volunteers, as far as practicable Provide appropriate training to enable each Volunteer to contribute safely to his or her greatest potential Provide opportunities for input to policies relating to Volunteers Provide comprehensive orientation to the program when Volunteers commence working

Volunteer Selection Criteria What BINSA expects Responsibilities of Volunteers Volunteers have obligations and must be prepared to  Make a realistic commitment and fulfill it  Acquaint themselves with the objectives, role and function of BINSA and the services that are provided  Undergo a mandatory National Police Certificate Clearance check  Be reliable and arrive on time  Notify an appropriate person if you are unavailable or arriving late  Agee to respect confidentiality within and outside of BINSA and sign a confidentially agreement  Respect the rights of others  Have a non-judgmental approach  Carry out the specified task  Give feedback which will assist the development of the program or service  Accept and acknowledge decisions made by staff members  Address areas of conflict or concern with the appropriate staff member  Exercise a Duty of Care in areas of Work, Health and Safety, including informing others of potential or actual hazards  Give formal and, if possible, timely notice of your intention to leave the service/program  Care for BINSA equipment and property and immediately report any mishaps or broken equipment  Sign an agreement to be photographed. Everyone is Responsible for Work, Health and Safety (WHS) Under the WHS legislation, Volunteers are deemed to be employees. As such, they have the same rights and responsibilities in relation to safe practices. Induction and training should ensure that volunteers can perform tasks safely and can access the assistance of paid staff when necessary. Training/Orientation Volunteers will be provided with support and training to enable them to carry out agreed tasks.
