10 REASONS WHY YOU MUST DO YOUR PHD & WHY YOU SHOULD NOT

By Shekhar Suman

“I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” ~ Robert Frost If you’re reading this article, it means only one thing. You want to take up PhD but not sure if you have enough reasons to finish it. Is that right? Or perhaps, getting a PhD nowadays has become a drift that you’ve finally developed curiosity whether your reasons are good enough to take new career goals. I’m not a mind reader but I’ve seen the full breadth of success and failure during a PhD by many students and not just one student 10,000+ students with whom I interact almost every year. Getting a PhD degree can take at least two to five years. You’ll be giving up the chance to earn money initially and losing the opportunity of getting a regular job. You may just imagine yourself being alone, researching, and reading a long pile of books. It’s going to be a great challenge. So why get a PhD? In this article, I have laid down the top 10 reasons why getting a PhD is the best decision you’ll ever make in your lifetime. For your convenience and to ensure I remain neutral throughout my advice I am also going to give you reasons why you should not do a PhD. This will help you judge your career better. At the end My aim is to ensure you get the best decision and not get carried away by any one. Good Reason 1: To learn and discover something new10 Reasons Why you must do your PhD & Why you Should not Getting a PhD is about discovering new things and making a stand about yourself. Most successful students who take up PhD have irrational love for research and new ideas. They have great vision about themselves and have dreamt about making a huge contribution in the academia. If you feel a driving force pushing you to explore a new career path then taking up PhD would be worth it. Good Reason 2: To develop a new skill set 10 Reasons Why you must do your PhD & Why you Should notThe demand for a skillful workforce is constantly increasing. Companies and educational institutions prefer candidates with higher educational attainment and exceptional skills. If you’re lucky, you may discover something critical to the academia and your impact would translate from lab to the “real world.” Although this does not happen all the time, having a desire

to develop yourself is instrumental in having a successful PhD Good Reason 3: To make a difference You’re constantly craving for a major breakthrough in your life such as seeing your name in10 Reasons Why you must do your PhD & Why you Should not a journal, challenging scholastic assumptions, and making contributions to the academia. Even if you have a regular job, you feel like it is not enough. You want to multi-task such as work in the morning and get night or weekend classes. You’re a go-getter type of person and you believe that you are an achiever. If you’re feeling this right now, getting a PhD is just the first step of bringing life to your life-long fascination. Good Reason 4: To grab the opportunity of improving your academic life for free Many students are intimidated of getting a PhD because of how expensive it can be. What if you can get it for free? Honestly, being a professor is one of the best jobs in the world. Its gives you the chance to mingle with popular people in the academia and work with professional colleagues in popular universities. The chance to learn new things everyday comes as a bonus. Plus you also get the opportunity of being promoted. The good news is that you can enjoy all of this for free. If you’re planning to take up PhD for free then delay no more, write CSIR NET exam or if you have just cleared the CSIR NET Exam, check BioTecNika’s scholarship offers. We can help you get the chance of a lifetime you’ve been waiting for. Good Reason 5: To pursue something that fits you Some people are meant to become nurses while others engineers. You can become what you want – a PhD graduate. If you have a natural thirst for research and insatiable obsession in reading books, then you will love the journey of getting a PhD. Good Reason 6: To build a successful future You can’t turn back time. Once your age is over, you cannot do a PhD. If there’s a chance at getting a stable and high-paying job twenty years from now, you need to start building

your career path today. Getting a PhD can be tedious. But if you have the passion of shaping your future then this is your calling. Getting a PhD is a fantastic journey when you have good reasons to pursue it. I highly encourage you to make a new milestone while you still have time. But there are also bad reasons why I would not encourage you to take up PhD. Don’t take up PhD if you have the following reasons… Getting a PhD without good reasons is like falling on a quick sand. There is no way for you to go up. It’s just like taking the CSIR NET EXAM without getting a high-quality online coaching from BioTecNika. Why am I saying this? Like most professors do, I want every student to reap the benefits of their hard work and set clear goals for those who are still undecided. So here are five bad reasons why considering a PhD is not a good option for you. Bad Reason 1: You want to be called a Doctor Yes, being a doctor sounds really nice. It’s something you can brag with your relatives, friends, and enemies. But if it is your only motivating factor, I discourage you to take up PhD. Graduating with a doctorate degree requires a huge mass of effort and passion. If you don’t have this, you will most likely fail. Bad Reason 2: Your family is forcing you to get a PhD This is a very common scenario among students with strong family ties. In a recent survey it was found that 20 percent of the student population take up PhD because they are told by their parents. Some were obliged to follow their parent’s footstep or fulfill a broken dream. Unfortunately, majority of the students who fail in the first semester are those who are not happy with their course. Getting a PhD degree can be tough and sometimes isolating too. If you can’t envision yourself to be in this situation within two to five years, then don’t force yourself. Talk to your parents about other career options. Convince them that you have greater chances of succeeding in the profession of your choice. Bad Reason 3: You want to have a lot of

money in the future Well, getting a high-paying job is everyone’s dream. There is nothing wrong about wanting a doctorate degree in pursuit of a luxurious life. At BioTecNika, we always encourage everyone to grab every opportunity to get a scholarship so they can have a better future. It only becomes a mistake if you are solely motivated by money. Getting a PhD is not a fast-track in getting millions. Remember that when you decide to enroll in a big university, you would be spending time and money. All of these things can go to waste if you are simply motivated by ill-will and shadiness. Bad Reason 4: You think it’s your ticket to live in Australia / Europe / USA / Abroad Getting a PhD in USA, Europe, Australia is a wonderful opportunity. In fact, the various governments are offering scholarship programs for international students to take up PhD in major universities. Yes, you can take that chance but you can’t defy the government and settle in their country under the guise of a scholarship program. Most students only use their PhD as ticket to get into another country. Once there in, they stop studying and look for work. If this is your plan, you will be depriving more deserving students of the chance to study abroad. In fact, your plan won’t last long because once you flunk the first semester, the university will cut off your scholarship fund and you won’t have enough money to survive another month. Bad Reason 5: You have nothing else to do in your life Hey! Getting a PhD degree is not a game you can try if you’re bored with your life. I tell you, nothing is more boring than studying for another three to five years in your late 20s or 30s. But if you have the passion in getting a PhD, spending a couple of years of study and research can be a delightful experience. Take note, getting a PhD degree in India or in other countries around the world requires commitment. If it is not your intrinsic character, then getting a PhD is not a smart option. So there you have it. As you see, getting a doctorate degree is very inspiring if you have the right reasons. Can you think of any reason why you’re taking up PhD? Share us your thoughts about this article and I would be more than happy to answer you individually.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A PHD IN INDIA / ABROAD SUCCESSFULLY ? So you’re planning to apply for a PhD Programme but have no idea where to begin. If you’re a Masters student, now could be the best time to think about applying for a PhD degree. First things first do not forget to qualify your csir net exam if you want to do phd in India. If you want to do PhD abroad then also these tips will be handy. Applying for a Ph.D. seems like an intense process, especially if you are a working person or a fresher with zero or no experience in interacting with project guides. However, there are a few things that you can do to make your application smooth going. In this article, I’m going to share the most important steps on how to apply for a PhD. Step 1: Start early and research on available Ph.D. programs The first important step in applying for a PhD is to do some research. Make sure you understand the different types of doctorate degrees on offer, including eligibility and PhD How to Apply for a PhD in India / Abroad Successfully ?entry requirements. Then research on potential universities and programs that you want to enroll. Once you get relevant information about a particular PhD program, you will start getting ideas about the kind of work you want to do. Always remember, deadlines for PhD applications usually fall on late autumn but some universities, in and out of India, still accept applications until spring. It is important that you are ahead of time so you won’t be late. If you are late then it means you loose a precious year. Thus keep this point in mind. You can check the latest PhD dates here Step 2: Decide on what area or topic you want to specialize in When you do your research, expect to be confronted with a myriad of available PhD programs from different universities. Everything will sound seemingly enticing and will cause you to feel ambivalent. To drive away confusion, try to consider your graduate course and your master’s degree. For example, if you have a Masters in Research (MRes) then you can proceed to get a doctorate degree in the same program. Also, make sure that you’re passionate about your choice. Let’s say you love hard sciences like Molecular Biology , Cell Biology, or Nuclear Medicine. Then choose a PhD program focusing on these areas. Remember that your chosen subject will be the breadand-butter of your PhD journey for the next half-decade. Don’t choose something that you’re half-hearted, otherwise, your dream of becoming a PhD will surely be compromised Step 3: Choose a topic for your PhD dissertation

4

Once you’ve chosen your specialty, think about what you want to write. It could be an assumption that you want to challenge or a problem that hasn’t been addressed yet. It does not have to be perfect right away. So long as you have an idea what to write, then How to Apply for a PhD in India / Abroad Successfully ?you’re good for now. The problem with most PhD students is that they start their PhD with over-ambitious projects. The key is to simply boil down your ideas into one central research question. If you can’t think of an idea, try to investigate old research projects or read through several dissertations. This helps you explore interesting topics that you can start writing later on. Step 4: Research for a potential supervisor I’m sure you’re feeling a little tedious now after reading through the tips. I can totally understand if you feel like the process of applying for PhD is difficult. But the hard truth is that getting a PhD is absolutely rocket science. There is no shortcut to success. Remember all Good things are hard to achieve. So is your PhD If there’s one thing I can promise you – that is I’m going to make it sound simpler. So once How to Apply for a PhD in India / Abroad Successfully ?you have chosen a topic, the next thing you must do is to find a potential supervisor. You will be working with this person throughout the actual writing process that is why you need to find someone that you’ll be comfortable with. Research on the person’s history and experience in handling a similar thesis project. Is your supervisor an established academe? Does he have a good track record? Is he strict? How many students is he handling right now? Gather as much information as you can to prepare yourself once you meet this person. Also, it’s a good time to think about what to expect from your PhD supervisor and the kind of support you’ll be getting based on his record. Step 5: Send a “formal” application to your supervisor A PhD supervisor can probably handle just 5 to 10 students per semester. It is important that you reserve your slot by contacting your prospect. Now, I have put emphasis on the word “formal” application because I don’t want you to send a generic email. The people you’ll be dealing with are professionals. They get dozens of emails every day saying “Sir, can you please be my supervisor?” or “Sir, can you please take a look at my thesis?” Unfortunately, these are the types of emails that go

to trash. Every now and then, I advise students to craft a formal letter to get noticed. Below is an example of a really good email that will surely grab the attention of your potential supervisor. Dear Dr. Rajesh Goyal, I’ve read your journal about Bio-Chemistry with focus on the molecular function of the latest medication for hypertension and it fits well with my research interest. I’m sure you can give me the best input regarding the subject matter and I want you to become my thesis supervisor. Kind regards, With this example, you will see how sincere the student is. Considering every supervisor’s highly reputable profession, sending formal letters is also one way of showing respect. Step 6: Follow up with phone or email Stop wasting time pondering on several reasons why your supervisor has not replied. Assuming they are busy, it’s still your responsibility to make a follow-up. The best time to follow up with your application is within two weeks. As you note, they’re frequently busy and you can’t expect them to reply within three days. But this doesn’t mean that your application has been turned down. The following is a perfect example of a follow-up email. Dear Dr Goyal, I wrote to you on the 15th of March requesting you to become my supervisor on my investigative research in Bio-Chemistry regarding the molecular function of the alternative medication for hypertension. I would really appreciate it if you could reply to this email and let me know your thoughts on this matter. Thank you for your kind consideration. Kind regards, Step 7: Ask questions Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Getting in touch with your PhD advisor is just the firststep of the PhD application process. You will be meeting more people in the university such as the admission staff, lecturers, head of the graduate school, and research department. Most of these people are thrilled to help you put together a successful PhD application. So make sure that you clear your mind from doubts and understand every detail of your PhD program by asking relevant questions.

Step 8: Completely fill up the application form This may sound pointless for many of you but everything can go up or down from your application form. Majority of students who don’t fill up application forms properly often get overlooked. For a stellar application form, make sure that you completely fill up all the important hotspots such as the Education and Qualifications, Employment History, Interest and Achievements, and Personal Statement, Statement of Purpose etc When you apply for a PhD, candidates are shortlisted based on the application form and interviewing only comes second. So it is important that you’ve laid down all important information in the application for you to gain entry and proceed to the next step. Step 9: Spend enough time on your actual application If you’re in a rush, just think of this – your application is your gateway to your PhD Degree. So make plenty of time to think about your application. Have you visited your university and talked to your supervisor? Have you carefully compared different research topics and PhD programs? Just be honest with the opportunities you’ve explored. Who knows you might be given better offers because of your impeccable effort. Lastly, gather positive feedback from the people who know you well. Make sure you choose the right people as your reference and apprise them of your PhD application, so they can prepare something in advance. Step 10: Start thinking about your career We all know that not all PhD graduates go to the academia. There is only 50 percent of those who successfully finished their PhD who choose to become professors. The other half goes to other areas like policy work, non-government organizations, and private entrepreneurship. Getting a PhD might seem a long way but it’s good to have a vision of what your future will be. This will help define your direction as a PhD student. So there you go. Knowing these 10 tips would be an immense importance not only for effectively completing your PhD application but also for a successful post-graduate journey. Good luck with your application and I hope that you’ll get what your heart desires. Got Questions? Shoot them to us in the comments below.

7 THINGS YOU PROBABLY DON’T KNOW ABOUT PURSUING A PH.D. DEGREE

Pursuing a doctorate degree is one of the highly chosen carrier options in the world. Today, there are 740,000 students or 2 in every 1000 adult population are enrolled in Ph.D. Ph.D. means Doctor of Philosophy or DPhil. It comes from the Latin word docere which means “to teach” and the Greek word philosophia meaning “love of wisdom.” Every student who enrolls in Ph.D. is required to complete a final project which is focused on a predetermined topic. It is often referred to as a foundation for specialist expertise but what it means depends on the opportunity that you decide to seize. Below we have listed 7 Things You Probably Don’t Know about Pursuing a Ph.D. Degree. Getting a Ph.D. Degree is a long process. It starts by submitting a research proposal which normally contains the topic to research on, research format, and methodology. Once approved, you can choose an adviser who will act as your primary consultant throughout the actual writing process. Most schools in world require thesis to be at least 100,000 words. It has to follow a certain outline, edited, and proofread before being presented to a panel of examiners. You are expected to defend your thesis before them and answer all the questions they have regarding your thesis. After an extensive proofing, you can now publish your work in an academic journal. If you Google the word Ph.D., you’ll probably see hundreds of results pointing to different books and magazines. However, in this article, I will share with you the seven issues about Ph.D. and how to solve them. Writer’s block This is a condition where you suddenly find yourself stuck. You don’t know what to write causing delays in your thesis progress. With so many things going on the writing process, it is normal to have a writer’s block at a certain point. When you experience this, try to

take a break. Go to a new place, have a coffee, and find new inspiration. Reading also helps to exercise your brain cells and capture more ideas. Don’t depend on one book when writing your thesis. Try to research more resources and authors so you can get more information. A lot of reading to do Reading is a secret ingredient of a powerful thesis. Expect that you will have a lot of readings to do as you encounter questions along the way. If you think your resources are not enough, try to go to another library. Get three books on a particular topic and compare what the different authors have to say. You can also use the internet, leverage the newspapers, or get more ideas from journals and other publications. Remember, completing a Ph.D. degree is not race. It is a marathon. Lack of motivation A study in the UK shows that three out ten doctoral students don’t finish their degree within seven years. This is usually caused by many factors that can happen throughout the writing process such as losing someone, failing in a relationship, or simple tediousness. Motivate yourself by creating a schedule to push you to make timely progress. Take a rest if you feel tired but don’t quit. Most of all, nothing beats the motivation of having someone who cheers you up. It could be your significant other, your friends, or your family. Forgetting things With so many calculations and comparisons going in your thesis, it is normal to forget things. You tend to forget important pages, authors, and numerical figures. Sometimes you forget a piece of relevant information from the book you just read because you forgot to take note of them. My advice is to have a research diary. This is very help-

ful especially if you are doing a quantitative research wherein you deal with a lot of numerical data and figures. So everytime you make changes, just jot them down to your research diary. Whenever an idea pops out in your head, write it down immediately. Track every decision you make, every data you add and delete, and whatever variables you may have changed. Questioning the relevance of your study According to the OECD, doctoral holders are expected to play a key role in the society. It follows that your thesis must be relevant enough to the society so that you can contribute more knowledge to science and technology. But is your thesis relevant? It’s normal to feel anxious whether your thesis would contribute something to the society. One way to assure yourself is to ask your adviser whether your thesis makes sense at all. Read original works for your resources. For example, if you are using Adam Smith in your thesis don’t rely on someone else’s work. Try to ind his original works and read them yourself. Loneliness Most of the time, you will be writing your thesis alone which makes it really boring. Sometimes it takes two to three hours to write a paragraph. Within these three hours, it is just going to be you, your books and your computer. Unfortunately, you can’t write thesis in just one day. So this process can go for months or even years if you cannot finish it on time. According to a study in the University of California, one half of post graduate students suffer from depression because of loneliness in having to work alone. To avoid loneliness, make it a habit to talk to your colleagues. Ask about their updates, throw some relevant questions, or just hang out together. Don’t forget to connect with your adviser. He is the best person you can turn to whenever you need a direction for your thesis. Lastly,

talk to your friends, significant other, and family. They’re the best medicine for loneliness. Explaining your thesis When you talk to friends, families, or colleagues they will most likely ask about your thesis. What’s your thesis about? What are you studying about? When are you graduating? These series of questions lead to a lot of information that they will probably not understand if you choose to answer the way you want to. When you’re asked these questions, you will also feel pressured, intimidated, and confused. Sometimes you feel like you don’t even know how to explain your thesis anymore. When you find that yourself in this situation, just relax. I suggest that you prepare a summary of your thesis – that is your four years of thesis and 100,000 words into one or two phrases only. Just imagine this as a test of how much you know about your thesis. As you see, there is no hard-and-fast rule about how to complete your Ph.D. Some people work throughout the weekdays and attend classes over the weekend. Others work from 9am to 5pm, and write thesis in the evening. The process is all up to you. Just remember, the secret to completing your Ph.D. is perseverance and willpower. By Shekhar Suman

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO AFTER RECEIVING A PHD OFFER LETTER ?

Here’s the scenario. You wake up one morning at the sound of your email notification and to your surprise, you jumped out of bed. Hurray! Your Ph.D. application has just been accepted. Or your mom has probably left a letter in the kitchen saying “Hey, sweety you just got a letter from the mailman.” When you opened it, the letterhead revealed the name of your dream university. You’ve just been offered a scholarship to study Ph.D. abroad. Well, the first thing that I can say to you is Congratulations! Your Ph.D. journey is just about to unfold. So what now? In truth, I have received more questions regarding offer letters than how to apply for a Ph.D. degree. It’s normal to feel a mixture of emotions. You can be excited and happy but also lonely because you’ll be leaving your family soon. Some students even complain about being confused and intimidated. Others don’t have an idea what to do because it is their first time to receive something big. So in this article, I am going to share with you the things that you should do when you receive an offer letter confirming your place to study a Ph.D. Tip 1: Celebrate your milestone! I’m sure you’re very excited right now. Receiving a Ph.D. offer is not something that everyone is lucky to have. If your application is successful and you receive an unconditional offer to study Ph.D. in your chosen university, it means that you’ve reached the first milestone, and it calls for a celebration. Things to Do After Receiving a PhD Offer Letter There are many ways to celebrate. You can do a crazy dance in your own room or sing your lungs out. You can also take this opportunity to spend a decent dinner with your family and share the good news. If you’re living abroad, you can invite your friends over and drink some wine. Tip 2: Contact your supervisor Receiving an offer letter is just your first step for a positive start. Don’t wait for a week before cracking the good news to your supervisor. After receiving your offer letter, draft a letter for your supervisor which you can send today or the next day. The longest time frame to contact your supervisor is three days. Before you get busy with other things, inform your supervisor that your application has been accepted by the

6

university. Ask about the most convenient time for you to meet and set up a schedule. Remember that students are expected to make the initiative to connect with their supervisors. If you ignore any opportunity to call them, you might not be able to catch up with each other. Tip 3: Accept your Ph.D. offer To accept your Ph.D. offer, reply within the school-given timeframe. Inform the university that you have received the offer and you are going to proceed with the enrollment process. Take note of the deadline for your approval. Most offer letters usually come with a timeframe within which you have to reply. If you can’t reply promptly, there is a high possibility that your offer will be withdrawn. Tip 4: Confirm your start date There is no specific date to start studying your Ph.D. degree. Normally, when you study Ph.D., you are given the option to start either on the 1st of March or 1st of April. But if you’re studying abroad, most universities will give you a specific date to start. If the details of your Ph.D. class schedule is not given, try to connect to the school registrar or department head to confirm your start date. Knowing your schedule ahead of time helps you prepare other requirements that will be needed as you begin with your Ph.D. journey. Tip 5: Get the ball rolling Once you’re in, it’s time to start your Ph.D. journey. Prepare yourself on your first day as a Things to Do After Receiving a PhD Offer LetterPh.D. student by gathering your research materials and meeting with your supervisors. Attend orientations at school. Don’t take for granted every orientation. Just because it seemed unimportant to you doesn’t mean that you will ignore it. Orientation is a chance to gather ideas on what you will do, meet new colleagues, and share ideas with students who are taking similar Ph.D. programs. Make sure that you learn how things go around in the university. Most universities have websites and student email accounts, which you can check on for updates. If so, then check your email regularly, communicate with your supervisor, and do your research.

Check out the library for available resources and look for a place where you can be comfortable in writing your thesis. Basically, just get into it and enjoy your journey in getting a Ph.D. Being accepted is definitely a major success, with or without funding. In case you have been accepted without funding, try to look for fellowship and scholarship programs that will help pay for your Ph.D. You can also check out BioTecNika’s scholarship programs for students who want to take up Ph.D. in Biology or Life Sciences. There’s never a thing too late if you just grab every opportunity.

documents with your application or after you have received an approval before the deadline so the university will not withdraw the offer. These documents can include your transcript of records, proof of meeting the academic entry requirements, proof of English proficiency, and a copy of your student Visa or passport if you are studying abroad. Your chosen university can require you to submit any other documents. Just make sure that you complete them as soon as possible. Otherwise, your offer can be withdrawn.

What if you received a conditional offer letter?

Remember when you applied for a Ph.D., there’s a section in your application that requires Things to Do After Receiving a PhD Offer Letteryou to declare your results qualification. If you’ve attached your results qualification with your application, you will not have issues today. However, if you were not able to submit it together with your application for some acceptable reason, you need to submit it within the allotted time after you receive an offer letter. So there you go. Receiving an offer letter from your dream university is really exciting. I hope that these suggestions will be helpful to you. At any rate, for students who have been placed on the waiting list or have been rejected, please don’t hesitate to ask me for some insights. Good luck! Do you have any questions regarding your offer letter to study Ph.D.? Feel free to drop some comments and I’m more than happy to personally reply to you.

I’ve been asked quite a lot of about conditional offer letters for Ph.D. Unfortunately, not all students get 100% accepted after receiving an offer letter to study Ph.D. Receiving a conditional offer means that you’ve been accepted by the university subject to the completion of other requirements such as your references, follow-up documents, and results verification. Yes, a lot of students are caught in this situation. But don’t worry because there is a solution to every problem. If this is your case, the following are the important things that you should do. Tip 1: Gather your references Some universities place conditions on their offer letter because of the failure of the student Things to Do After Receiving a PhD Offer Letterapplicant to provide references. It is possible that your qualifications are superb but you’ve forgotten to fill-up the field for reference. Or you’re probably too-good-tobe-true that the university needed more references to confirm your academic achievements and good moral character. The best thing you can do is to gather at least two references. Make sure that one must come from your previous school. It could be a colleague or your old professor from your Master’s Degree Program who can share information about your academic performance and character as a student. Tip 2: Submit follow-up documents Applicants for Ph.D. are basically required to submit supporting documents to complete their applications. You must provide all these

10 COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN GETTING A PHD Rightly said by some one that if mistakes are not taken care of, a disaster is bound to happen. Especially when you are undergoing one of the biggest journey in your career – “A Ph.D” So if you want to avoid any disaster in your career Post Ph.D, This article is a must read and will hardly take 5 minutes of your time. Read on Mistake 1: Enjoying in your 1st Year of PhD The first mistake that PhD. Students commonly make is taking their first year of school for granted. Freshmen year is actually a time for research and study. Yet many freshmen focus on many other things such as skipping school and partying. Time moves quickly. One day you will wake up and realize that three years have already passed and you have achieved nothing. So don’t waste time and get your framing right. Most successful PhD degree holders will tell you that studying and research start from your first year of school. It’s not something that happens overnight. Open your book today, start reading, and brainstorm ideas on what to write. Mistake 2: Going Incommunicado, Not Updating Knowledge The second mistake is failing to keep up with the administration. Getting a PhD Degree is boring and many students get lost in the middle of the process. A lot of students suddenly stop checking their emails and getting information about new scholarships. In the end, they find themselves re-enrolling just to catch up. You can just imagine the waste of time and money if you get caught in this situation. You don’t need to do all this to realize how much energy you’ve wasted. Get up and check your email. You can chat your fellows

for updates and find out exciting opportunities that are just waiting for you to discover. Mistake 3: Not having a Career Plan The third mistake is most students don’t have a career plan. A recent survey revealed that 50 percent of PhD students do not actually go into the academia. They settle as researchers in a private organization or work in policy areas for the government. It’s time for you to know that getting a PhD means a lot of training, researching, and studying. To keep you driven, you need to craft a career plan. Think about the topic you want to focus on and the people you want to interview. Ask yourself about your career goals such as where you want to publish your thesis, the awards you want to get, and the kind of job you want to work after earning your degree. Mistake 4: Bunking Meetings with your Project Guide The fourth mistake is canceling meetings with your supervisor. A lot of students are guilty of skipping sessions because they feel like they have not done enough with their PhD thesis. What you don’t know is that you can still talk with your supervisor even if you have not written anything at all. If you’re feeling confused or having a brain freeze after writing one page, you can ask your supervisor for some guidance. Don’t be ashamed if your progress is slow. Everyone has gone through that. All you need in getting a PhD on time is to talk to your supervisor. In fact, it is highly recommended for you to attend as many meetings as you can. These can include lab meetings, group meetings, or a preliminary meeting with your panel. You can learn a lot from anecdotal meetings as you do in your research. Mistake 5: Failing to take Notes during

Meeting with your Guide / Mentors The fifth mistake is failure to take notes during the meeting with your supervisor. Most students who don’t take notes experience writer’s block after missing important details from their mentors. Taking notes is a significant element in getting a PhD. They are important review documents that remind you of the relevant tips from your supervisor. Hence, always make it a habit to bring a pen and paper when going to meetings. Mistake 6: Enrolling into PhD without Scholarship Most students think of self funded PhD or avoid taking entrance exams. Off Late No University / Institution is taking PhD’s seriously if they did not go through a national level entrance exam such as CSIR NET / GATE / ICMR JRF etc. You can check Biotecnika’s Jobs section where most job openings seek a CSIR NET qualification. Remember If you have still not got your scholarship, Grab one with the help of Biotecnika.

sion of doing a PhD which leads to further frustration and low morale,. The secret of a Successful PhD is to keep yourself hydrated with motivation and high morale. Remember every good thing takes its own sweet time. Rome was not built in a day and not even you! It took 20 years of dedicated study to become what you are today. So don’t question your decision. Stick to your decision. God has a plan for you and it will fall in place once you start believing in it. Mistake 9: Falling in the Comparison Trap Can apple be compared with Oranges ? No Then why do you compare yourself with any one else. Remember you are genetically unique. Why think that your Biological PhD degree is not as worth as an IT professional or any other field PhD. Have faith in yourself and don’t fall in this trap ever. Mistake 10: Not following BioTecNika regularly & seriously

Mistake 8: Cursing your decision to do a PhD

I know, I Know you may say I am promoting our website. But think once, every morning you wake up, Our Team has something or the other ready for you and your career. So if you are not reading our email newsletters, articles, news, Jobs, scholarships, exam alerts carefully. You are committing one of the biggest mistakes apart from the 9 above. Mistake 7: Questioning the Integrity of your Guide / System Many students start questioning the logic behind every process which exists in the PhD course work. Infact many a times they even end up questioning the intelligence of the Guide. This is strict red mark. Not trusting the system will eventually lead to you being thrown away from the system.

HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY SURVIVE FIRST YEAR OF YOUR PHD “A WELL BEGUN IS HALF DONE” ARISTOTLE but your freshmen year in Ph.D. is not complete without learning these life-changing lessons… Getting a Ph.D. degree has never been easy. You will be very busy meeting with your supervisor, discussing issues, and writing your paper. There will be less time for partying and catching up with drinking buddies. The good news is that time flies so fast. Sooner or later, you’ll hear Christmas carols and breathe the nostalgic scent of Christmas breeze. If you’ve reached this stage, it means that you’ve almost survived your first year as a Ph.D. student. At this point, you should be laughing at yourself as you recall the things that happened during your freshmen year. How did you even survive? Well, your freshmen year is one of the colorful years of your Ph.D. journey. In my experience, I’ve seen candidates go through a lot of ups and downs. But it is also the time when they discover great things and learn life-changing lessons you can’t forget. So in this article, I am going to share 9 Lessons You Can Learn in your First Year as a Ph.D. Student, How to Survive 1st Year of your PhD. Lesson 1: There’s never enough time to complete your reading assignments There are 365 days in one year, 75 percent of these days will most probably go to your How to Successfully Survive First Year of your PhDresearch. With this timeframe, students make it a habit of creating a schedule. For example, within one month you oblige yourself to write at least five pages a day and read three materials in a week. The hard truth is that you would have never achieved your targets at the end of the month. So one most important lesson is that you can never read too much. Distractions are everywhere. Dull moments will leave you feeling droopy, and you’ll constantly crave for motivation. To beat your deadlines, you must help yourself. When studying Ph.D., you are your hero. Visit different libraries around the city and get novel insights from different authors. Meet with your colleagues, explore several scientific works of literature, and understand the underlying principles of your study. By reading varying resources, you’ll eventually get inspiration and you’ll find yourself writing a whole bunch of ideas. Lesson 2: Taking note is a vital part of taking Ph.D. in biological science or life science When you study a Ph.D. in biological science or life science, you will go out often to gather data. In fact, you’ll probably spend your first few months out in the field to study differentHow to Successfully Survive First Year of your PhD specimens, collect different samples, and compare their behaviors. The second lesson you will learn is that taking notes is an important part of doing research. When you’re reading, listening, or performing an experiment, taking notes helps

8

you concentrate. It helps you remember sensible data, which you will have to include in your thesis three years from now. So ask yourself this question, “Will this data matter one year or two years from now?” If the answer is yes, then get your notes and write down the relevant information, so you don’t end up scratching your head in the future. Lesson 3: Knowing which environment strengthens your focus and which do not helps you fight bad days How to Successfully Survive First Year of your PhD There are a lot of sayings about good days and bad days. If you’ve ever attended a book launching, some authors will tell you the same story. It’s hard to believe that authors like J.K Rowling have experienced writer’s block. Other famous authors like Stephen King or Nicholas Sparks will also tell you the same dilemma throughout their writing process. So if you’re feeling blue right now because you can’t write anything – it is very normal. So the third lesson you should learn when studying Ph.D. is that it is impossible to write non-stop. There are times when you feel like Superman as you write your thesis. But there are also times when you feel like a couch potato. Then you’ll start wondering, “Why on earth have I decided to take up Ph.D.” Again, I am telling you it is normal. People taking up postgraduate courses such as Law, Master’s Degree, and a Doctorate Degree are bound to undergo similar situation. So if you get caught in this situation, try to find your comfort zone. Do you feel comfortable working in the lab? Are you the kind of person who would rather work in the office than work with lab-mates? Knowing your productive spots will help you fight boredom and distractions which cause bad days. Lesson 4: Writing your Ph.D. Dissertation is all about quality over quantity Have you ever tried forcing yourself to work for 8 hours and ended up only one page? If your answer is yes, then you must take note of this very important lesson. How to Successfully Survive First Year of your PhDThe fourth lesson I want to share is that you must focus on the quality of your write-up. It’s okay if you have not written anything today. Try to relax your mind. Shake off some pressures. Take advantage of your flexible hours. In fact, you can opt to use the laboratory equipment at odd hours instead of using it during working hours. You can often get work done in half the time when you’re not constraining yourself. The bottom line is that it does not matter how many hours you’ve worked on your thesis. What truly counts is the quality of your content. Lesson 5: Failure and trials part of the process so don’t be surprised I will tell in an exceedingly brief and direct manner – it is okay to fail. Yes, yes, yes, you’re telling me now that I am a pessimist. But taking Ph.D. is not always positive. When you’re in your freshmen year, your supervisor will tell you to rewrite your work

no matter how good it sounds to you. Sometimes, he’ll tell you to change your reference or overhaul your thesis. Wow, how bad is that? Then the next day, you’ll find out that your dog is sick. Or your fellowship did not come. Or How to Successfully Survive First Year of your PhDyour family is relocating because their area was hit by a storm. Why on earth are these things happening the same time when you thought you’re just about to become successful? Then you’ll question yourself, “Is this course right for me?” Everything seems to be going against you right now. I’m telling you, be strong. Failures and trials are just part of the Ph.D. process. They can happen to anyone, and in case they fall upon you, the first thing that you should do is affirm your faith. Believe in yourself that you can do it amidst all the trials. Don’t ever doubt yourself. Talk to your supervisor about the things that are bothering you during the writing process. They can guide you how to get through them. Talking to your friends and colleagues also helps. Most of all, take one step at a time. Getting a Ph.D. is not a 50-meter sprint, it is a marathon. Lesson 6 : Mistakes are part of the learning curve so take advantage of it When you start working on your research and experiments, you will inevitably make mistakes. Even if you have prior experience, you can’t expect yourself to be instantly perfect. How to Successfully Survive First Year of your PhDJust recently I’ve met a bio-science student who shared with me his experience of how he discovered a new chemical formula for his research after mistakenly cracking through residues in the microscope. It was a mistake in disguise which leads to discoveries and topic discussions in his thesis. As you see, everything leads to something. Don’t worry if you make mistakes. You might take wrong samples in the microscope, misunderstand research concepts, and gather wrong data. But on the bright side, you will be learning new techniques, discover new science processes, and explore new topics that could make your research more interesting. Lesson 7: Making friends will help you overcome the feeling of isolation Some students work until past 12 a.m., five days in a week in the hope of completing their research earlier. It’s amazing how these students can sustain stern self-discipline. Yet back in your head, you can’t help but think about how your friends have enjoyed that one-of-a-kind welcome party last week. The seventh lesson I’m going to share is that studying Ph.D. can be very isolating, but you have a choice. You can still make friends and party – don’t overdo it. The secret is to leverage a punishment and reward system for yourself. Try to finish your research today. Work on that simulation from last week for a straight three days or get that lab experiment done right now. If you succeed, then reward yourself with a non-PhD fun. Go out for a night. Party with your friends and get the new motivation to work harder the next day.

Lesson 8: Building your support community is a great way to gain new friends and expand your resources Nowadays, there are a lot of support groups you can join both in your university and even online. As you join different support groups, you will discover that many students are doing the same research like yours. So my eighth most important lesson is that don’t hesitate to join support communities. Who knows your colleagues might be doing a technique you don’t know. If you’re in the same community, you can ask them if you can watch and follow along with their steps. This could be a very effective step of exploring new ideas and learning new techniques that are usually done by groups. Remember that no man is an island. You need people to help you in your Ph.D. journey. Lesson 9: The direction of your research can change anytime, so be prepared When you’re in your first year in Ph.D., you will be full of ideologies and discoveries. But after going through a lot of research, you will most likely find other interesting principles that could change the direction of your thesis. It is also possible that you’ll find yourself misfit in the kind of research you’re doing. This leads to the last significant lesson – try to understand that your research will be subject to a lot of changes. While these changes can be big, they are simply part of the transition process. If you feel that you’re current research project is not for you, then talk to your supervisor. Make a detour and start again. Embrace potential discoveries and exciting opportunities that could lead to a new and well-improved Ph.D. dissertation. So these are the eight lessons that you should remember during and after your first year in Ph.D. It’s normal to feel like an underachiever during your freshmen year. We all go through that. The secret in coping with all this hassle is to keep pushing forward with smaller victories and simple pleasures along the way. You will surely be alright. Good luck! By Shekhar Suman

HOW TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR RESEARCH & PH.D. DISSERTATION

Isn’t this one of your headaches as a Research Student? Let’s simplify it today I am going to tell you in a remarkably brief manner – writing your Ph.D. dissertation is a long and winding journey. It requires long hours of competitive research, comprehensive comparison of existing literature, and profound experimentations. Personally, I must admit that throughout my online coaching career, I’ve seen many students who struggled with finding time and motivation to finish their Ph.D. dissertation. They lose interest and control through the process, which is an unfortunate scenario. Writing a Ph.D. dissertation is unlike your experience getting a Master’s Degree where everything is very much like the traditional supervisor-student relationship. Expect it to be intricate and more like a master-apprentice relationship. So in this article, I am going to share with you some practical tips on how you can stay on top of your plans and make sure that you’re in charge of your Ph.D. journey. Tip 1: Determine the objectives of your thesis Majority of Ph.D. students don’t have any clue what they’re doing during their freshmen year. So when they submit their first draft, it is not always perfect and will most likely be advised for revision. Don’t get frustrated when this happens, be open to criticism and accept that you are not perfect, in fact, no one is. Your thesis objective defines the structure and direction of your thesis dissertation. It narrows down your research to more specific sections and topic discussions. This can take a while to get used to but here’s the hard truth – you are in charge of your research. So hang on and complete it. No one else is expected to direct your research but you. Your supervisor will only be there to make suggestions, present possible questions, and guide your actual writing process. Even hands-on supervisors won’t be present during lab experiments and data gathering. To craft, your objectives try to ask yourself these questions. What specific problems are you trying to address? What conclusion are you trying to achieve and convey to the potential readers? Are you trying to debug a program, discover new alternative medications, challenging a scientific assumption, or simply comparing existing literature? Tip 2: Narrow down your research topic Ph.D. dissertations are very specific. When your research is too broad, you could experience a lot of problems such as having too many information sources, lack of sufficient

parameters, and difficulty in determining what to include and what to exclude. Ph.D. dissertations have to be as particular as possible to prevent conflicting and remotely related ideas. Remember this, a manageable and presentable research is your key to getting a Ph.D. degree. If you find narrowing your topic difficult, try to first start with a general topic. Then gradually break it down into smaller categories. Imagine yourself looking at your research topic through a microscope. You have to choose one lens through which to view and determine the components which will be the focus of your analysis. However, be careful not to overly narrow down your research. When your research is too narrow, you will find it too hard to locate enough research data to support your study. Tip 5: Choose your research materials wisely Don’t let the books decide your thesis direction. I know there are quite a lot of current and reputable research materials out there, but it is you who is control. Once you’ve narrowed down your research topic, you will know exactly what materials to use. For example, if your Ph.D. thesis is focused on biological research of genetically modified crops in India, then don’t waste time reading books that are focused on remote topics like “how old is the universe” or “how important it is to research about Mars” or “has Pluto stopped being a planet.” If you let yourself drown in too many materials, you’ll mostly like succumbed to information overload or brain freeze. It’s like eating ice cream in full spoon, consistently for one minute. You’ll suddenly feel like your blood has stopped flowing, only to realize that you’ve already lost control in your Ph.D. Tip 3: Take control of your schedule Now is a good time to think about your schedule. When you start writing your Ph.D. thesis, your time will be tremendously divided into orientations, meetings, seminars, and research. I’ve heard quite a lot of students struggle with writing because of a hectic schedule, especially for those who are also working. So I strongly suggest that you create a schedule. Set a time for your lab research and your study. Check your schedule in advance to know when you can meet with your supervisor. Regarding writing, create a template regarding how often you are going to submit your work. How many pages are you expected to finish every week? What should you end during the first month? How often should you meet?

Tip 4: Observe ethical considerations when writing As you research, you will discover quite a lot of authors publishing almost similar studies like yours. Often, you will get tempted to copy their ideas, especially when they’re too unique and interesting. Of course, everyone wants to sound smart in their thesis. But hey, getting a Ph.D. is all about presenting your discovery and not about creating a patchwork of borrowed ideas. What I am trying to say is that your work must be 100 percent original. To avoid plagiarism, make sure not to copy verbatim the work of an author. If you like a particular idea, you can have it paraphrased and then footnote your reference. If you want to use an entire paragraph, I advise that you use quotation mark and cite the author. Remember that your thesis will be published in school journals. It is important to maintain academic integrity in the academia and avoid plagiarism. As a Ph.D. student, you are expected to know unethical conducts when writing a thesis because it is an imperative aspect of taking control of your Ph.D. journey. Tip 6: Research like a pro Have you ever had that nagging feeling that there might be more data out there that you’ve missed in your research? That there could be more related literature or experiments that could help with your data analysis? When you have this feeling, then don’t stop researching. There is no algorithm to yield a complete Ph.D. dissertation other than taking control of your research. When doing research, I always tell my students to create a system that can guide them through the process. First, of all, you have to set your preferences. Are you the type of a lab or field person? If you’re the first, then make sure to control your time and manner of doing experiments in the lab. If you’re the latter, make sure that you know the steps in doing field experiments and ask support from experts. Collect as much as specimens as you can and leave no stones unturned. Next, what type of medium are you most comfortable with? Are you the type of person who is more comfortable with books or are you able to work with high-tech research materials like computers and databases? Then, determine how you patch up data. Do you want your supervisor to look at raw data and get feedback? Or do you prefer to write from zero details and have it checked only when polished?

depends on your self-discipline. As I said, getting a Ph.D. is not like the traditional student-teacher relationship. So when you meet with your supervisor, don’t expect them to spoon feed you with information. Before you turn up for a meeting, make it a habit to take note of the things for clarifications. Jot down important discoveries, thoughts, and idealizations. Take time to pull together an agenda and email your questions in advance so your supervisor will have time to prepare for quality feedback. Tip 8: Know when to compromise and when to make a stand I am telling you as early as now – your supervisor is only human. If you’re lucky enough, your relationship with your supervisor will run like a clockwork. But often, you can’t help it to be perfect. Your supervisor can suddenly become elusive and will be hard to reach. He will be very busy with school administration and field trips. You will become a lesser priority, which can annoy you. At some other point, your supervisor will not agree with your thesis proposal. He will have a different opinion on your research issues and will have an opposite perspective on how you should write your thesis. Either way, you need to be very open-minded when dealing with your supervisor. Develop an understanding that your supervisor is not Superman or Wonder Woman. Supervisors have their weaknesses, and you may have to compromise professionally. Listen to their directions and suggestions but if you feel like your idea is worth fighting, then don’t be afraid to make a friendly argument. On the other hand, acknowledge your mistakes and weak points, and rewrite your research content if you must. So these are the practical tips on how you can take charge of getting your Ph.D. thesis done. The last thing I want to share with you – which I’ve proven to work all the time – is just to keep on pushing. For sure there will be obstacles along your way. You’ll get tired and bored. Sometimes, you’ll feel like your supervisor has dominated your thesis or that time pressure has beaten the creativity out of you. But don’t give up. Always keep your head high because no one is in control of your success but you. I hope you enjoyed reading my article today. Do you have any questions or additional tips you think can help Ph.D. students take control of their Ph.D. journey? Please feel free to drop your comments in the comment box, and I will be more than happy to respond to you personally.
