FROM THE President: “I would like to thank the members for the opportunity to work with the ABHA as president. A special thanks to Joe and Norma Hoagland for their role in developing the breed, registration process, and all they have done to get the Black Hereford Breed to its current stage. Dante McDougald
In January 2013 the ABHA started the use of WHR. Black Hereford breeders are encouraged to participate in Whole Herd Reporting (WHR). If Black Herefords are to increase further, breeders will need to increase their record keeping efforts. The results will demonstrate more growth and maternal EPD predictions, all with increased accuracy. For those breeders not participating in the WHR program this year, I would strongly encourage you to sign up for this important program next year – beginning December 2013. WHR Is just one example of many new and exciting changes that are sure to come as we take our place as a leader in the cattle industry. Look for us on Face Book soon! And Like us!! “ Dante McDougald ABHA President D Bar T Ranch Hm: 936-831-2058 Cell: 936-674-8288
ABOUT THE President: “Dante is an independent distributor of Borden Milk and owner of D bar T Distributors and D bar T Rental Properties. He is a third generation rancher and still lives on the family’s ranch near Apple Springs. His primary interests have always been his cattle and horses. He and his wife, Terry Lynn, finished raising his two younger brothers following the death of their parents. Dante is one of the largest Black Hereford producers and a past president of the Texas Black Hereford Association.” Black Hereford Journal • 5
ABHA Board meets
to elect new officers and set the budget for 2013 The ABHA Board 0f Directors met on Jan. 18, 2013 at the association headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. The first order of business was the election of new officers following the annual meeting where the new board was elected. Dante McDougald of Apple Springs, Texas was elected President. Dante has been a member since 2004. Steve Zinke of Corning, Iowa was elected Vice-President. Steve has been a member of the ABHA from its earliest days and once owned the original Black Hereford bull, BJH Balder 7504 – HB000001. Norma Hoagland was re-elected as the Secretary-Treasurer. As the board met, registrations have continued to fall short of projections which have impacted the association budget. To encourage members to register their calves, the board again voted unanimously to remove the full membership list from the website since many members do not register their calves. However, the board felt an active breeders list needed to be included on the website as well as a semen sale page that could add revenue. Active breeders as defined in our by-laws could also produce more revenue by paying to link their websites with the ABHA website. Money was approved to spend on building a new website that will be easier to update. The board also approved a motion to hold the National Heifer Sale and scheduled it to coincide with the ABHA annual meeting in November. Steve Zinke 6 • Black Hereford Journal
and Julie Kroening reported that after looking at other facilities that the J&N Ranch Sale facility was best option available to host the sale. It was decided that the fees and commissions would be the same as last year and that the sale budget would be set by the sale manager who will be Dr. Craig Ludwig. The board also approved plans for a Black Hereford Feedout program to begin next fall.
New Officers (L to R): Dante McDougald, Norma Hoagland, Steve Zinke Board Members (above) (L to R): Norma Hoagland, Joe Hoagland, Dante McDougald, Craig Ludwig, Dirck Hoagland, Steve Zinke, Julie Kroening, Danny Smithson, Trudy Deters

The information collected will be used primarily to evaluate the bull who sired the steers. The Feed Yard will track 22 categories including carcass, performance and efficiency traits, along with costs and other financial statistics. Producers will be privy to all of those, along with giving the producers involved a blind comparative analysis that will show how their cattle compared to the cattle from other producers. Now for the parameters: Arrival date – November 2, 2013, J&N Ranch, Leavenworth, Kansas, where steers will be weighed and given EID tags in the left ear. Consignors need only provide the name and registration number of the ABHA sire of the steers entered in the National Feedout program. Transportation from J&N Ranch to the Feed Yard is included in the fee paid the ABHA. Steers must be born after January 1 of the calendar year the test is being offered. Steers must weigh a minimum of 450 pounds. No maximum weight. A Vac 45 weaning program or equivalent, with 3rd party verification of vaccination purchase and age verification by the consignor is required. All steers must be weaned 30-45 days prior to arrival. $50 per consignor plus $5 per steer to the ABHA, paid on arrival at J&N Ranch. $10 per steer to Decatur County Feed Yard. This will include the cost of ultrasound, marketing and data retrieval. This does not include any medicine or vaccinations. These extra costs and the $10 enrollment fee wil be included on the feed bill. Billing will be done by Decatur County and all feed bills and other feedyard costs will be the responsibility of the cattle owner. Decatur County will carry the feed bill until the cattle are marketed and will deduct the feed bill from the sale proceeds. 9R was approved by the Genetic Standards committee and admitted as a sire in the ABHA by a vote of the full membership in 2011. He is free of all known genetic defects. His steer calves in the National Hereford Feedout suggest that he will improve the “End Product” that goes in the meat case. Higher Pay Weight, Higher ADG, Higher Carcass Weight, Higher Dressing %, Higher Ribeye Area and Higher Marbling Score than the Schur-Lar steer group average and everyone knows about the success of the Schu-Lar breeding program.

from the EDITOR
The Quarterless
Quarterly
Joe Hoagland
The Black Hereford Journal will complete its first season with this issue. This issue was mailed to nearly 3300 farms and ranches. We will not publish a summer issue until advertising revenues can sustain the publication. All in all, this first year has been a learning experience for all of us. The BHJ has been well received and compliments have poured in from the beef industry. It certainly adds to the reputation of Black Herefords and its status as a beef breed. We were caught in the cutbacks at the US Postal Service during the distribution of our Winter Issue. As the postal service closed several regional distribution points around the country to save money, our magazines were delayed or in some cases lost in the hands of the postal service. Assurances have been given that those problems will not re-occur.
Thanks for supporting the Black Hereford Journal.
The Fall Issue will begin our next season with notice of the ABHA Annual Meeting, National Heifer Sale information and more feature stories. We have also lowered our advertising rates for the next season. We no longer charge for design time, nor do we offer discounts for camera-ready artwork. Most camera ready ads still required changes to fit our format and Gail Lombardino, our BHJ Designer, found the design time needed for ads was not excessive and could be covered as part of the ad cost itself. Don’t forget to sign up for the card ad pages. $150 gets your card in all three issues beginning this fall. As always, our policy on location is based on seniority. If you have an ad space, it is your space until you drop it. Advertise in each issue and keep your location or be in position to move up if someone drops their ad. Thanks for supporting the Black Hereford Journal. If you would like to advertise, call the BHJ Office at 913-727-1266 and ask for Natalie

Reserve Grand Champion heifer of AOB was Triple L Y038 born 9/29/2011 owned by Dylan Harris, Brozoria, TX
Dylan Harris showed his Black Hereford heifer as a commercial heifer (non-Brahman) against Angus, Charolais & others and was first in class for which Dylan won a belt buckle. Then Dylan and Cassie Dorsett showed their heifers in the ORB class (Other Registered Breeds) and Dylan’s heifer was first in class and Cassie’s heifer stood second. Again Dylan was awarded a belt buckle for the first in class award.
Emma Merriman, Gadsden, AL placed 5th in the NCBA Youth Public Speaking Contest held in conjunction with the NCBA Convention and Trade Show in Tampa, FL in early February. Emma’s speech was about Black Herefords and how they can make a positive contribution to the beef cattle industry. Emma is the daughter of Gary & Bea Jai Merriman, owners of Pine Valley Farm, new Black Hereford breeders and enthusiasts.
