The importance of records and bers. For instance, breed associations (e.g. ABHA) keeping pedigree information ties into the first purpose of BIF, uniformity within and across breeds, within the U.S. and Canada, as well as provincial, state and national beef cattle improvement assoespecially on records and terminology. work to establish accurate and uniform procedures to assess and discuss performance, performance recording techniques, and ensuring the data collected is useful and without errors. BIF provides guidelines that contain these standard procedures based on research and industry experience. Whole herd reporting procedures and guidelines, which has recently been adopted by ABHA, is one such tool suggested by BIF. Animals have differing values for breeding or selling, but performance data on all registered animals within the breed provides the association with a complete perspective on the current status of its breeding stock. From this, breeders of Black Herefords can set better goals and plans to improve the breed overall. The second purpose of BIF is the development of member organizations and their affiliates with their individual beef improvement and quality management programs. As mentioned earlier, each breed has unique qualities, so no two programs can be exactly the same. BIF recognizes this and works with member organizations to develop specialized programs and goals for that breed based on the guidelines. This allows for uniformity of terms and procedures while also being specific to the needs of each breed. As a younger association, ABHA and its members benefit from these programs because BIF guidelines provide a blueprint to develop the association. This blueprint has been tested by many organizations before it and provides a valuable resource to guide ABHA in the right direction. Cooperation of members across all segments of the beef industry is the next purpose of BIF, which coincides with the previous purpose. Cooperation hits at the heart of the overall common goal to produce high quality beef efficiently and profitably. Many as-
sociations or organizations have tried various ways to improve efficiency and to enhance profitability. Some of the ways have worked, some haven’t, but by cooperating and sharing information at conferences and meetings we can learn faster from previous mistakes and successes, and move forward in making management decisions more efficient, selecting for more efficient animals and producing quality beef more profitably. Cooperation helps the association, but how does cooperation benefit the individual breeder? The fourth purpose of BIF is to encourage members (i.e., ABHA) to develop educational programs and resources. A prime example of BIF at work with ABHA is the Black Hereford Journal and inclusion of articles like this one. Resources like this journal, the ABHA being members of BIF, US Beef Breeds Council, and others provide educational resources for breeders to become more knowledgeable about guidelines and procedures and why they exist. If you are new to the cattle industry or perhaps even a seasoned breeder interested in how BIF defines and measures certain production traits, you can find their current guidelines at: http://www.beefimprovement.org/ PDFs/guidelines/Guidelines-9th-Edition.pdf. These are excellent starting points to how you should measure and record important production traits for your herd. As breeders learn and incorporate uniform record keeping on more production traits, then ABHA can grow their list of expected progeny differences (EPDs) that they report. Although visual appraisal of your breeding stock should never be forgotten or lost, there can be some economic and genetic gain in using selection criteria

r o f e l b m e s s A s r e d e e r B g n i t e e M l a u n An Black Hereford breeders from around the country met at the Country Inn & Suites in Kansas City, Kansas, on November 2, 2012. This was the 9th meeting of the full membership since the association was started back in 1994. Breed improvement issues dominated the discussions. A question and answer session was held to discuss the impact of recent board actions. During 2012, the board was faced with two major issues: 1. The large number of breeders selling unregistered cattle, many identified as possible carriers of genetic defects which had been denied registration previously. 2. Problems breeders were experiencing keeping records. In 2010, all animals that were potential carriers of genetic defects either from the Angus or Hereford lines were identified by the association. Letters were sent to each breeder explaining that those cattle must be DNA tested before their calves could be registered in the ABHA. Some breeders rather than do the testing simply stopped registering their calves but continued to sell them to unsuspecting buyers as Black Herefords without papers. Some
breeders bought memberships so they could hold themselves out as Black Hereford breeders but have never registered a calf. In one case, a member purchased a life membership back in 2008 and has never owned a registered Black Hereford. Nevertheless, they appear on our website as a breeder of Black Herefords. The ABHA is the only cattle breed association in America that publishes its entire membership list on its website. In order to curb this practice of the unauthorized sale of animals represented as Black Herefords, the board voted unamiously at its August meeting to remove the full list of members from the ABHA website. It was noted that many members no longer qualify under ABHA Rule 2.1 to be included on the “Breeders Listâ€? anyway. As the association receives inquiries, they will be directed to breeders who register their calves and keep good records. This action was taken to maintain the quality and reputation of the breed. To assist breeders with record keeping, the board adopted the recommendation of the Beef Improvement Federation and approved a voluntary system of Whole Herd Reporting (WHR). This method of registration allows breeders to update their herd inventories, receive current EPDs on their entire herd and better establish contemporary groups needed Black Hereford Journal • 9

Dear Friends. In this sale we are offering the first sons of the two herd sires we purchased at the Schu-Lar dispersal. The first, “9R”, the great carcass sire out of P606, is in the top 2% of all Hereford bulls for ribeye size and in the top 5% for marbling and scrotal size. We also purchased “3T”, which we own in partnership with Genex, who has the semen sale rights. “3T” is a full brother to Schu-Lar On Target 22S who is owned by Accelerated Genetics. “On Target” is in the top 3% of all Hereford bulls for calving ease direct and in the top 1% for weaning weight, yearling weight, scrotal size, ribeye size and marbling. In addition, he is in the top 2% for milk and growth while remaining lower in fat than 99% of all Herefords. Schu-Lar retained a ¼ interest in both bulls. We are also offering a volume set of JN Balder 8622 sons. He is homozygous black and homozygous polled. This year he produced the highest indexing set of calves in our herd. He has really emerged to prove himself an extraordinary herd sire. Using these bulls in conjunction with each other will produce polled Black Hereford bulls with superior carcass qualities compared to any other Hereford bulls anywhere. That is why we say “Better Color, Better Carcass, Better Hereford.” Thanks for your business. Sincerely. Joe & Norma Hoagland Dirck & Natalie Hoagland For questions: call 913-727-6446

Breeding Guarantee:
We offer one of the best guarantees in the industry: We guarantee that all breeding cattle sold by J&N Ranch, both bulls and females, are fertile to the best of our knowledge. To guarantee buyer satisfaction, if a bull purchased in this sale is injured at any time within a year of purchase, so as to make them functionally infertile, we will provide a satisfactory replacement (if available), or issue credit at a future J&N sale equal to the bull’s purchase price less the salvage value. If a female is later determined to have been open at the time of the sale, we would offer a credit in the next J&N sale for the difference between her purchase price less
the salvage value. We do not guarantee a live calf nor do we guarantee a bred female to breed back in the future. If a problem arises, please contact J&N before you cull the animal so arrangements can be made. This guarantee will not replace a dead animal if it is killed or dies for any reason. We suggest that normal care needs to be exercised for any animal purchased and that yearling bulls not be allowed to get too thin. All claims must be verified by your local veterinarian. We urge all yearling bull buyers to have their bulls semen tested before they turn out.
Watch a Video of the Sale Cattle:
A video of each lot can been seen by going to: www.jnranch.net and clicking on the “2013 Sale Video” tab.
Bid by Phone:
We will post the sale order on bulls at least two weeks in advance. Unlike past sales that have featured internet bidding, there will be no live video of the sale. You can, however, bid over the phone during the sale if you make arrangements ahead of time. We have hired and trained a series of phone callers who can take your bid over the phone. You will be called one or two lots ahead of the lot you are interested in purchasing. Once the bidding starts on that lot, you can place your bid with the operator. You will be the only caller on the line with that operator. Once that lot is sold, you will be disconnected. You can arrange ahead of the sale to be called on several different lots during the sale. Of course, they will not always be handled by the same caller. All calls must be arranged 3 days ahead of the sale. After that time you can still place a bid or buy bred females through a sale representative or the auctioneer.

9R is the only maternal brother to Schu-Lar 5N, the popular Genex Cooperative sire. His daughters have an average nursing ratio of 102 at Schu-Lar Herefords. He is an udder improver and ranks in the top 10% for marbling among all Herefords.

FALL CALVING BRED COWS
Due to drought conditions last summer, we were forced to pull bulls out of the breeding groups much earlier than planned and move cows to pastures where there was water. This resulted in more open cows than normal so we bred them back to be fall calvers. They were all bred to “8622” except for those shown as bred to “3T”. They are scheduled to begin calving on August 19th.

National Heifer Sale
is Big Success
Sale manager, Dr. Craig Ludwig, expressed his thanks to consignors for the excellent offering of open and bred heifers at this first National Sale. Ludwig said, “The National Heifer Sale is our association’s marquee event. Every cattle breed needs a premier function that brings its breeders together each year. Most consignors were pleased with the results and promised to return next year with more cattle to sell. Others who came to buy this year said they would consign heifers to sell at next year’s National Heifer
Sale. I believe this consignment sale will come to be known simply as “The National.” It is the place to be seen and display your breeding program to other breeders in our association. By concentrating on females, we provide a venue for breeders to improve their herds from this high end offering by purchasing one or a group of females. And, as sale manager, I am pleased to report our sale expense to be lower than most other breeds for their headliner event.”

FROM THE OFFICE:
Below are a few tips to get your work done at the association office more quickly. 1. USE OUR FORMS. All ABHA forms are on the website. If you do not have access to the internet, call the office and we will mail you the needed forms. We cannot accept data by phone. When you do not use the forms, it’s easy to forget some vital part of the information, such as tattoo number in right or left ears. There are new forms as of January 2013. Always, allow 60 days for work to be done. 2. NAMING CALVES. Always use your ranch prefix to show this calf was bred by your ranch, such as: BJH for Blue Jacket Herefords: BJH Bull 1103. Be consistent year after year. If yours is an embryo transplant calf, it must have ET added to the end of the name. 3. TATOO YOUR CALVES. Permanent tattoo identification of each individual calf is required for registration. Ear tags can fall out and are not permissible as a permanent individual identification. Each tattoo must be unique to that animal. 4. TRANSFERS. When transferring an animal to a new owner you must fill out the back of the Registration Certificate, date, sign and mail it to the association. Think of this Certificate as a legal document of ownership similar to a stock certificate, and you are giving the office permission to assign ownership of this animal to a new owner. We cannot do transfers from phone calls or emails until the Certificate is received at the office. 5. SEND PAYMENT WITH THE WORK. If you send in work with no payment, we will print up an invoice, mail it to you and hold your work until payment is received. To speed things up, always send your Order Form and payment along with your work. There is no fee for weaning or yearling weights, remember.

6. NEW REGISTRATION RULES. Just a reminder that the ABHA no longer processes “Compute Only” animals. Only cattle paying the full registration fee are now entered into the system. Both red heifers and red bulls (steers) can now be entered and given HX numbers. Black calves are given HB numbers. Following the recommendation of our consultant, only F1s are entered under the NR numbers. Black Hereford Journal • 39
from the BHJ DESIGNER Hi Folks, Joe Hoagland has suggested that I introduce myself to all of you in the Black Hereford community. I have thus far had the pleasure of working with several of you although with .com times we live in its nice to be able to connect a persons name with a face. That said my name is Gail Lombardino and I have a small graphics shop at my home in rural Faucett, MO a small town near St. Joseph and Kansas City. I studied commercial art at Missouri Western Sate College in St. Joseph and was hired by the American Polled Hereford Association (later Hereford Assn.) in K.C., MO. They hired me to manage their photography but transitioned me to a graphic artist. In 1990 an artist skilled with a computer could take ad layout from cut and paste to desk top publishing we use today. It quickly made more sense to send the photo processing
to what was then the 1 hour photo down the street. After five years I made a truely bittersweet decision to leave Hereford and returned home to start my family. Within the year my husband and I were raising Eli, our first boy and tending a new business that followed me home. It seemed that without a choice Homestead Graphics was established in 1996. The internet was making it possible for people to work from the home office where I quickly established customers and friends from coast to coast. I began laying out the Elk magazine along with countless pieces for Hereford and Angus breeders. Today I am designing for several associations, several managers, several publications and countless breeders. In 2011 we added an embroidery service. It keeps me busy with my boys and their friends sports apparel and all the things farmers and ranchers love to wear. Please read the layout worksheet on page 37 and contact me anytime if I can help. I can be reached at 816-238-3950 or 816-344-3911.

TRIM LINE
BLEED AREA Here is a diagram of a typical document for print designs. LIVE AREA 1. Trim Line: This is the finished size of the piece. 2. Live Area: The area that is considered safe to keep any important information within. For example, if an ad’s trim size is 8.5 in × 11 in, the live area might be 7.5 in × 10 in. This takes into consideration the binding if the ad is placed on the left or right of a spread and you don’t want copy to be unreadable if it is too close to the spine. 3. Bleed Area: The more bleed you can offer, the better. The minimum bleed you need for a printed piece is 0.125 in (1/8 in) but some specs require more than that. So if you are working with an image in Photoshop and you’re placing it in InDesign for print preparation, keep in mind the area you might need to use for the bleed. 4. Crop Marks: Indicates where to cut the paper.

Since the 1930’s black baldies have topped local sales across the country. Red baldies off the same set of cows are sorted and sold at a discount. Eliminate that loss with a Black Hereford bull on your blackhided cow herd. According to the USDA, the percentage of black-hided fed cattle doubled from 1995 to 2010. Today, two out of every three head on feed is black-hided. That is projected to increase to 75% by 2015. Using a Black Hereford bull in your crossbreeding program will qualify your calves for market premiums that are triggered by hair color. Plus, a recent study has shown that Black Hereford sired calves marble better than calves sired by red Hereford bulls. We have over 100 breeders in 27 states.
