If a problem arises contact us before disposing of the bull. All claims must be verified by a veterinarian. We suggest that normal care needs to be exercised for any animal purchased and that bulls not be allowed to get too thin. We urge buyers of yearling bulls not to mix or use them with older bulls in order to reduce the risk of injury. Yearling bulls should be semen tested before using them the first time.
All of the Black Hereford cattle in this sale are registered in the American Black Hereford Association. Transfers are included in the purchase price. BW, WW, YW, M, M+G are from the ABHA. An EPD is the difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit. They are reported in units of measurement for each trait (e.g. lbs., cm., etc.) The data used in this analysis is based on up to 15 generations of J & N breeding and thousands of head of cattle measured over 38 years of performance testing for growth, maternal and carcass traits. PRODUCTION EPDS: Calving Ease Direct (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease. Birth Weight EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in weaning weight that are due to milk. Yearling Weight EPD): YW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the progeny of animals at one year of age. MATERNAL EPDS Maternal Milk EPD (M): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. They reflect the average differences in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected. Scrotal Size EPD (SC): Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between scrotal size measured in centimeters in bulls and the fertility of daughters out of those bulls. Bulls with larger testicles sire daughters that reach puberty and begin cycling earlier.

Thank you for your interest in this our 25th Annual Production Sale, featuring the most highly proven cows in our registered Black Hereford cow herd. These cows have not only proven themselves from a performance standpoint, they have also proven themselves as income producers. They have survived our culling process and represent the best of our performance based breeding program. These cows have all been tested and found free of Neospora, BVD, and Johnes. They are all PI negative. We are also selling 10 bulls we have used in our registered and commercial breeding programs. They represent the latest in Black Hereford genetics and are the future leaders of our breed. They sell with full possession and full semen sale rights unless otherwise announced on sale day. These bulls have all been tested free of trichomoniasis in addition to Neospora, BVD, and Johnes. They are all PI negative. Last summer we were able to purchase a top end set of open heifers from Paul Hughes in Fowler, Colorado. He has purchased many very good registered Angus bulls for many years and we have watched his program develop. Now, we are seeing some white faces appear on those black cows of his. These heifers have all been pelvic sized and tested for disease pathogens in the same manner as our Sunflower Supreme cows. They are safe in calf to low birth weight, easy calving registered Black Hereford bulls. They sell in pens of up to 25 head by tag number. Buyers can buy one heifer up to the entire pen. Finally, our certified Sunflower Supreme second calf heifers sell safe in calf to registered Black Hereford bulls. This was the top end of the 475 head of Sunflower Supreme heifers we produced last year. As advertised, Sunflower Supreme heifers are problem free cattle developed using the best practices set forth by Kansas State University and certified by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. All of these young cows carry the Sun-Sup tags in their ears with individual ID numbers. They are all age and source verified and tested free of disease pathogens. 97% calved without any assistance. We intend to feed out the weaned steer calves off these females and develop replacements out of the heifer calves. Welcome to J&N Ranch. Thank you for the opportunity to be your beef genetics supplier. Joe & Dirck Hoagland
