BREEDING GUARANTEE: We run a closed herd of 220 cows. New genetics are introduced only through artificial insemination. After this year we will no longer use embryo transplant and have calves raised by commercial recipient cows. All of the bulls in this sale have been born, raised and developed on this ranch. They are designed to be problem free using best practices and free of disease pathogens. The entire herd is segregated at all times from other cattle, often by a roadway preventing nose to nose contact. The herd has been tested for Neospora, BVD, Johnnes, BLV (Leukosis) and is PI negative. All the cattle in this sale have been DNA tested for parentage. Our entire herd is AM, CA, NH, DD, and IE free by pedigree or has been tested free of these genetic defects. Any females are sold bred and safe in calf. If a bull becomes a non-breeder as a result of injury or disease within 12 months of purchase, J&N will provide you with a credit in our next sale equal to the bull’s purchase price less his salvage value. If a problem arises, contact us before disposing of the bull. All claims must be verified by a veterinarian. We suggest that normal care needs to be exercised for any animal purchased and that bulls not be allowed to get too thin. We urge buyers of yearling bulls not to mix or use them with older bulls in order to reduce the risk of injury. Yearling bulls should be semen tested before using them the first time. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: PAYMENT: Cash or check will be accepted. If you purchase over the phone or through a representative we ask that you mail a check on sale day. Payment is required before cattle are shipped from J&N Ranch. Each animal is sold with a J&N Ranch Certified Performance Pedigree. REGISTRATION: The sire and the dam of all the bulls in this sale are registered in the American Black Hereford Association. Each of these bulls is eligible for registration. We will register and transfer any of your purchases in the ABHA into your name for a fee of $50 per head, due and payable at the time of settlement.

Thank you for your interest in our 26th Annual Production Sale, featuring 90 Black Hereford bulls. At J&N, we have gone to extreme lengths to eliminate variables that can influence the results of our genetic selections. We develop our yearling bulls in an enclosed feeding facility so as to limit the influence of weather on performance comparisons from one year to another. We have closed our herd, tested and isolated them from potential disease pathogens. Every calf is DNA tested for parentage. In doing so, we want variations from one animal to another to be based solely on their genetic differences. All of this has been done with our customer in mind, so you can have greater confidence in your choice and purchase. These efforts have also attracted national and international attention. Two separate university research projects are now underway involving our herd. First, is a study led by Dr. David Riley of Texas A&M University to locate the DNA marker for eye pigment in whitefaced cattle. The second is a multi-year endeavor by the University of Leuven, under the direction of Dr. Steven Janssens, looking at a variety of maternal traits. We hope with the results of research projects like these, we can not only draw attention to the quality of our cattle but offer more selection options to our customers. Welcome to J & N Ranch. In this sale we have the largest selection of Black Hereford genetics ever offered in one sale, featuring 22 different sire groups. Thanks again for your interest and the opportunity to be your beef genetics supplier. Joe & Dirck Hoagland

BLACK HEREFORDS EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs) These EPDs are based on a multi-breed analysis by IGS, the largest beef genetic evaluation system in the world, then adjusted to a Black Hereford base as calculated by Dr. David Riley of Texas A&M University and Dr. Lauren Hana of North Dakota State University for the traits they measure. All other traits are evaluated directly from the multi-breed analysis combining performance records from 12 breed associations and J&N Ranch. An EPD is the difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit. They are reported in units of measurement for each trait (e.g. lbs., cm, etc.) The data used in this analysis is based on up to 16 generations of J & N breeding and thousands of head of cattle measured over 39 years of performance testing for growth, maternal and carcass traits. PRODUCTION EPDS: Calving Ease Direct (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to firstcalf heifers. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease. Birth Weight EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in weaning weight that are due to milk. Yearling Weight EPD): YW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the progeny of animals at one year of age. MATERNAL EPDS Maternal Calving Ease EPD (MCE): Predict the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to the daughters of another sire in the same evaluation. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births. Maternal Milk EPD (MM): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. They reflect the average differences in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected. Maternal Weaning Weight EPD (MWW): Total Maternal EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by an animal’s daughters. They account for
2
average differences that can be expected from both weaning weight direct as well as from milk, and measure a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters. CARCASS EPDS Carcass Weight EPD (CW): CW EPDs estimate average differences in carcass weight, expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint. Yield Grade EPD (YG): Predict the average differences in cutability that can be expected between the progeny of animals at a given age endpoint. As with all EPDs, YG is expressed as a deviation. Negative values are desirable. To use it, one must keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better. For example, a bull with a -.33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are 1/3 of yield grade better (lower) than a zero bull. If zero bulls sired an average yield of 3.0 in a particular environment and management system, offspring of a -.33 bull would be expected to have an average yield grade of 2.67 (1/3 of a yield grade better/lower.) Marbling EPD (MAR): Predict the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score. Backfat EPD (BF): Estimate the average differences that are expected in external fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib between progeny of different animals. Expressed in inches at a given age endpoint. Ribeye Area EPD (RE): Predict the average difference in ribeye area in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Expressed in square inches. SELECTION INDEXES Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where indexes come in. Through rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes. All Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature Angus cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Consequently, maternal traits such as milk, stayability, and maternal calving ease are not considered in this index.
