If a problem arises contact us before disposing of the bull. All claims must be verified by a veterinarian. We suggest that normal care needs to be exercised for any animal purchased and that bulls not be allowed to get too thin. We urge buyers of yearling bulls not to mix or use them with older bulls in order to reduce the risk of injury. Yearling bulls should be semen tested before using them the first time.
EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDs) All of the cattle in this sale are registered in the American Black Hereford Association. Transfers are available upon request. The EPDs shown in this catalog are from multiple sources. BW, WW, YW, M, M+G are from the ABHA. They are based on data collected on the sires and dams of each sale lot and projected from the ABHA’s latest genetic evaluation which was completed by Texas A&M University in November 2015. CE and SC were calculated independently by a beef geneticist exclusively for J&N Ranch. These EPDs are not available through ABHA at this time. An EPD is the difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit. They are reported in units of measurement for each trait (e.g. lbs., cm., etc.) The data used in this analysis is based on up to 15 generations of J & N breeding and thousands of head of cattle measured over 38 years of performance testing for growth, maternal and carcass traits. We hope to add carcass EPDs by next year’s sale. PRODUCTION EPDS: Calving Ease Direct (CE): Predict the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when bred to first-calf heifers. Expressed as percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease. Birth Weight EPD (BW): BW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring when compared with another animal in the same genetic evaluation. Birth weight EPDs are primarily used as an indicator of calving ease, with the age and size of the females to be bred usually dictating how much birth weight can be tolerated. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences in weight that can be expected between the progeny of animals in the same genetic evaluation at 205 days of age. Weaning Weight EPDs do not account for differences in weaning weight that are due to milk. Yearling Weight EPD): YW EPDs are expressed in pounds and predict the average differences that can be expected between the progeny of animals at one year of age. MATERNAL EPDS Maternal Milk EPD (M): Milk EPDs are expressed as pounds of calf weaned by a bull’s daughters. They reflect the average differences in weaning weight that can be expected in grand progeny due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Available feed resources will dictate the extent to which milking ability should be selected. Scrotal Size EPD (SC): Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between scrotal size measured in centimeters in bulls and the fertility of daughters out of those bulls. Bulls with larger testicles sire daughters that reach puberty and begin cycling earlier.

BLACK HEREFORDS
25332 Wolcott Road Leavenworth, KS 66048 913-727-6446
Thank you for your interest in this, our 23rd Annual Production Sale, featuring 90 Black Hereford bulls. Black Herefords were designed specifically for use on black hided cows to produce black baldie calves without the risk of getting red baldies. Black hair is the color cattlemen can count on and is the reason the breed started. Like other red hided breeds that have become black in the last 30 years, Black Hereford calves qualify for market premiums based solely on hair color. However, studies have shown Black Hereford bulls provide additional benefits. Traditional Herefords have long been known for docility and feed efficiency. While keeping those Hereford traits, Black Herefords tend to have larger ribeyes with more marbling and less trim fat than their red-hided counterparts. The Angus genetics that gave them black hair also gave them better carcass qualities. At J & N we have selected only high marbling Hereford bulls that are well muscled and low in fat to maintain a Black Hereford’s carcass superiority over traditional Herefords as the breed moves toward purebred status. That is also why we have spent so much time and money to develop our own carcass EPDs from years of carcass data collection. We also select Hereford bulls to be used in our herd that are high in calving ease with good udder suspension and teat size. This sale features some bulls that trace their pedigrees back 15 generations on this ranch. We closed our herd to outside genetics in early 2013 and now only use semen from highly proven Hereford bulls from outside the herd. The herd is free of trichomoniasis, Neospora, BVD-PI, and Johnes. Our goal is to maintain a highly predictable genetic source of problem-free cattle that are free of disease pathogens. Welcome to J & N Ranch. Thanks again for your interest and the opportunity to be your beef genetics supplier. Joe and Dirck Hoagland
