SERVING OUR BULL CUSTOMERS SINCE 1944
When you buy a Knoll Crest bull, you do more than purchase an animal – you tie to a program. Knoll Crest Farm is firmly committed to delivering service with each bull. We conduct our business in a manner that demands providing only the very best genetics for our valued customers. Along with “value-added” genetics, we provide “value-added” service. BULL GUARANTEE: Knoll Crest will insure each bull it sells in an unconditional manner against death or injury for one year. The insurance value shall be for 100% of the first $5,000 cost for a total not to exceed $5,000. Knoll Crest shall receive salvage value, if there is any. Purchaser agrees to have bulls examined (or autopsied) by a licensed veterinarian and notify Knoll Crest immediately. The insurance is to be redeemed in the form of a replacement bull, if available, or a credit on future Knoll Crest Bull purchases. BULL PICK UP AND DELIVERY: Pick up your bull on sale day or within 7 days and receive a $50 discount on each bull purchased. You will receive this discount at checkout time. For bulls that require delivery, we guarantee that freight will not exceed $250 per head to anywhere in the continental US. WINTERING OF BULLS: Knoll Crest will winter your bulls until March 1 at no cost. This will allow producers to buy bulls for future use and not have to take possession until Spring. VOLUME DISCOUNTS: Buyers purchasing 2 or more bulls will receive a volume discount as follows: 2 bulls - 2%, 3 bulls - 3%, 4 bulls - 4%, 5 or more bulls -5 %. PAYMENT SCHEDULE 2013-2014: For taxation purposes, it may be beneficial for some customers to pay for cattle after January 1, 2014. Therefore, we will gladly accept payment at sale (2013) or by January 10, 2014. SEMEN INTEREST: Knoll crest Farm will retain a 1/3 semen interest in every bull selling. In reality, this will affect only a very few bulls that sell. KCF reserves the right to collect semen at KCF’s cost and the buyers’ convenience. KCF retains 1/3 of the semen revenue rights for each bull. The buyer owns 100% possession and 100% salvage value. FLOOR PRICE: Each bull selling will be floored at $1,800 during the auction.
DIFFERENT BREEDS FOR DIFFERENT NEEDS Many aspects of our seedstock operation here at Knoll Crest Farm would be simplified if we worked with only one breed of cattle. Having three breeds makes us very aware that each breed has traits of excellence that are not exhibited in other breeds. This certainly supports the opportunity and need for crossbreeding in a commercial program. GELBVIEH - Known as the “mother” breed based on superior milk and reproduction. The half-Gelbvieh cow in a commercial program allows one to benefit from hybrid vigor with added muscle and performance in the feeder calf. We find Gelbvieh cattle to have increased stayability (longevity) in our herd. At weaning, we get an advantage in weaning weight over our two British breeds. ANGUS - Essentially every commercial herd in Virginia needs some Angus influence due to the many advantages Angus cattle have to offer. Angus excel in carcass quality, maternal values, acceptance in the market place, etc. The Angus Association has developed programs such as Certified Angus Beef, Carcass EPD’s and many others that continue to put this breed at the forefront of the beef industry. POLLED HEREFORD - In the recent years the Hereford industry has seen a positive turnaround in the interest due to the greater focus on consumer and customer needs. Knoll Crest Farm’s program, designed around the needs of the beef industry through commercial bull customers, has worked well for us with the Polled Hereford breed for over 50 years. We believe there is a great need for Hereford cattle in crossbreeding programs. The black-baldie cow and black baldie feeder calf have and continue to be the choice of many feeder calf producers and feedlot operators. The excellent disposition of the Hereford breed can be strong asset for a family farm or part time operation. This breed has aggressively embraced new genetic improvement technology that will allow Hereford cattle to be competitive as a component of progressive crossbreeding programs.
2
Bull Development and Contemporary Grouping Weaning weights (for 205 day adjusted weights) were taken in May, approximately 30 days prior to weaning. Bulls were weaned on pasture and hay. The “test period” was from early June to early October. For that period, bulls continued to graze in 15-30 acre pastures, had access to grass hay and free-choice bull developer composed primarily of commodity ingredients, barley and an intake-limiting ingredient from Purina. The yearling weights are lighter than in years past, but we are confident the bulls are healthier, sounder, and better prepared for the breeding season without need for extra supplementation. The bulls were divided into several contemporary groups for “ratioing” purposes at weaning and yearling. They were grouped by breed, and pre-weaning location and management. ET bulls were put into separate contemporary groups. Our goal is to minimize confusion, while practicing sound genetic evaluation principals. Please give Paul a call if you have questions.
American Angus Association $Values are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. A $Value has meaning only when used in comparison to the $Value of another animal. For example, just as with EPDs, variation in $Values between animals indicates average expected differences in the relative value of progeny if random mating is assumed and the calves are exposed to the same environment.
How do I use them? $Values should be used to complement the criteria that producers already use when selecting bulls. The $Values are not designed to be driven by a single trait, as an index is multi-trait by design. These selection tools are the result of the application of industry-relevant market values to Angus genetics for preweaning, feedlot, and carcass merit. The $W, $F, $G and $B values on individual animals and the Sire Evaluation Report may be viewed at www.angus.org. Feedlot Value ($F): an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning performance compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G): an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Beef Value ($B): an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. The $B value combines the contributions of $F and $G.

continues to be one of the most unique sires in the breed. His progeny are very limited in number and we are honored to have semen. His birth-to-growth spread is exceptional and his progeny are quiet, massive and wide-based. The daughters exhibit great broodiness, neat udders and a stunning profile. They are making top cows, true to Consensus’ royal maternal pedigree - I87 x 6I6 x Right Time x Traveler.

polled. Red eyed, rednecked and short marked. Z367 has been a favorite since birth and was our high weaning weight bull. He demonstrates excellent style, thickness and soundness. We flushed his dam last fall after calving – as a two-yearold she exhibited the most flawless udder structure, fleshing ability and femininity we have seen in a young cow. American Hereford Association Profit Indexes
size manageable. The weight for IMF is greater that the weight for REA. This is true because of the price difference between the choice-select spread and the fact that there is very little incentive to produce cattle better than a yield grade 3. The question comes up concerning the fact that our branded beef program (CHB) has been successful because of the acceptance of Select cattle. IN answer to this, we are using a crossbreeding production system that could sell cattle on several grids and that our CHB program is installing a choice product. This index is geared to service any commercial program that runs British cross cows.
Profit Indexes are not silver bullets! The indexes which have been formulated by the AHA are to be used to assist Hereford breeders in using the genetic evaluations to potentially improve profitability for commercial producers. These indexes have been designed using multiple traits. These indexes are formulated on general representations of beef production systems used in the U.S. and consider a group of economically relevant traits that characterize those systems. Relative economic values for this group of traits are paired up with the EPD to produce a $ index value. The difference in the $ value of the high index predicts the difference in the profit. Each of the indexes utilizes crossbreeding to capture the value of heterosis. The indexes also include cost of production for all phases of production (cow-calf, feedlot and harvest). The income is derived at the carcass endpoint based on the quality, weight, grade and yield. The economic values are based on past values with some forecast for what economists believe the future holds. The economic values assigned to each trait can be changed at anytime that it looks to be necessary.
Baldy Maternal Indexes
This is a maternally focused index that has a production system based off of 1000 Hereford x Angus females with a progeny harvest endpoint directed towards CHB. This index is more critical of CE that the Braham Influence Index and also has significant weight on fertility. There is positive weight on WW and a slightly negative weight on YW which promotes early growth and then a slow down on growth to keep mature
20
this Harland son for calving ease and to produce optimum females. His mother is one of nine full sister in our program. Polled with scurs.
CHB (Certified Hereford Beef)
This is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls sire calves for the CHB market. There is some pressure put on CE and then positive weight on both WW and YW. Remember that all offspring in this index are harvested, so we want then to be born alive and then grow fast at all stages of life. Of course, we have a much heavier weight value on fat in this index, as we want the cattle to stay lean. There is also a significant weight on both REA and IMF with more emphasis again on IMF. This index would be used by producers who have a target of producing bulls for a terminal breeding program. This index could be used heavily in the Midwest where bulls are used in rotational breeding programs to produce cattle in a retained ownership program or simply sold to backgrounders. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that nothing is retained in the herd.

is one of the most potent breeding sires we have ever used. As an individual, he posted the heaviest weaning weight we have ever recorded, and is unusually athletic, sound footed and quiet natured. Five of the six dams on the bottom side of his pedigree are Pathfinders, and this cow family has proven to excel on fescue and in heat/humidity. Southside will see his heaviest service in the future!

The Willis Family In picture, L to R: Wendy, Sam, Tim, Happy, Robin and Weston.
“For the past forty years the Willis Family at Roanoke Plantation has been using Knoll Crest Farm bulls on our farm. Through the years we have developed a wonderful relationship built upon trust and friendship with the Bennett family. They have advised as to what bulls would work well with our farm and shared their knowledge of the beef industry both locally and nationally. The Bennett family stands by their bulls guarantee. If there is a problem with a newly acquired bull i.e. soundness or disposition, they will help remedy the situation. They also listen and are interested in what their customers are doing and the feedback from them. They care. Throughout the years we have altered our goals and Knoll Crest Farm bulls have helped us attain those goals. We have found that the Knoll Crest Farm bulls have the genetic traits and bloodlines we look for: gentle disposition, moderate size frame with a deep chest and length, soundness, good maternal traits, calving ease, and longevity. They are local bulls accustomed to our environment. This type of animal is essential to our farm program. We are a family cow calf operation, which uses the mob grazing approach using single strand poly eclectic reels. During the summer the cattle are grazing summer grasses of Switchgrass, Johnson grass mixed with fescue and clover. Our end product is Natural beef. We are now introducing finishing our yearlings for local retail to our program. The Willis family at the Roanoke Plantation looks forward to many more years of buying bulls from Knoll Crest Farm and our close relationship with the Bennett Family.” -Robin Willis
“Knoll Crest bulls work for us because they are balanced, and in one package consistently hit our targets for maternal traits, growth traits, and carcass traits that both we and our customers value (commercial cow-calf producers, cattle feeders who get premiums for healthy, growthy cattle that grade well on the rail, and housewives who are cooking for their families). The catalog normally includes multiple bulls that are in the top 25% of the breed for all the key traits, and that match EPDs with performance. Add to the quality of the cattle the Knoll Crest warranty and you will see why practically all of our bulls begin at Red House.” Note from Shelton Miles, Aug. 15th 2013: “Shipped 54 GAP certified natural steers to buyers in Pennsylvania today, 38 on the heavy load and 16 on the light load. The heavies went to a multi-repeat buyer and according to the VCA fieldman and the LLsMkt manager probably set the price record for 700# feeder cattle in the US year to date. The whole group averaged 720 pounds and brought $177.75/cwt.”

Bill and Claudia Tucker own and operate Tucker Family Farms in Amherst, Virginia where they market 200 performance-oriented commercial replacement heifers annually. Bill utilizes Angus, Red Angus and Gelbvieh genetics in his herd, and calves 600 cows every year. Bill is a dynamo cattlemen, and great friend of the Bennett family.

“Paul and I continue to challenge every breeding decision, constantly adjusting our thinking as new information becomes available. Every phone call is rooted in “what can we learn?”. That’s what we want in business, family, and friendship for generations to come. We have challenged each other’s thinking, pushed each other to be better, and always tried to honor the privilege that our family has given us to build on the past and be trusted with the future. I have been blessed in my life to count James and Barbara as close friends, confidants, and in James’ case a business mentor that has pushed me to the possible.” -Bill Tucker

Getting Started By: James Bennett
On the back of this old photo is printed: “Made by Eastman Kodak, September 20th, 1949”. The greatest significance of this picture of Dad, me and a Hereford bull calf is the three day old registered Polled Hereford herd bull prospect we had just purchased to be delivered after weaning. The calf was well marked, dark red, smooth polled, out of a good uddered cow, plus a popular five generation Trumode Domino pedigree. No performance information, no EBVs, no EPDs, no ultrasound data, and no genomic profile. In 1949 “what you saw is what you got”, plus a five generation pedigree to check against any genetic dwarf carriers. The herd we purchased this calf from was located in Orange, Virginia, owned by Mr. Woodberry S. Ober, a very successful business executive who had developed this outstanding herd of Polled Hereford cattle with expense not being a limiting factor. Mr. Ober was aware of the economic contrast between his operation and our operation. His consideration and generosity made it possible for us to afford this bull for our small herd of registered Polled Hereford cattle. At age 16, I already knew my chosen field of work would involve farming. My concern was that our farm was about 90% tobacco and 10% cattle, and my interests was about 90% cattle and 10% tobacco. The transition from primarily tobacco to cattle took about 40 years. In those early years, tobacco was the crop that provided the resources to expand our land base necessary for a growing seedstock cattle operation. My even greater concern was how could we compete in the registered cattle business, when back then, the majority of the influential registered Polled Hereford breeders in the eastern United States had other businesses that could support their cattle operation. I now realize, 64 years later, the stressed economic conditions at Knoll Crest Farm gave us the advantage in starting a long term seedstock cattle operation. We could not afford to compete in the show ring. We could not afford to keep cattle that did not work for us, nor could we afford to chase the fads that we have seen come and go in the purebred cattle industry. These circumstances led us to better identify with the commercial cattle industry, where servicing the needs of the commercial cattle industry became a Knoll Crest Farm trademark. We have and continue to give credit to our commercial bull buyer for any success we have had as a seedstock producer. The positive changes we have seen take place in the Hereford breed in the last ten years have been phenomenal, and the results equally rewarding. These changes along with a renewed interest in crossbreeding puts the Hereford bull, the bull of choice, in many progressive commercial herds. Barbara suggests that my love and enjoyment of my job has relieved me of ever having to work at it for a day in my life. She and I are very much aware of how we have been blessed as stewards of God’s land and livestock. Our greatest reward from Knoll Crest Farm would be the full time employment and working relations it has provided four generations of the Bennett Family and I have been involved with all four. Statistics indicate there is only a 5% chance a family farm will continue for four generations, with an even less chance a seedstock cattle operation will last for 70 years.
Jeremiah 29:11
I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hoped for. 34
