1917 100 YEARS 2017 CENTENNIAL ANGUS HERD NELSON ANGUS FARM BEAVER BROOK ANGUS, LYLE, MINNESOTA By: Tom Burke Our story begins in 1855, 162 years ago when Nels Oleson came from Norway and settled in Nevada Township in Mower County, Lyle, Minnesota. At the time Nels Oleson settled in Minnesota there were so many Oleson’s that he changed his last name to Nelson. Nels Oleson now newly anointed as Nels Nelson was the father of Helmer Nelson who followed in his father’s footsteps as a Mower County farmer and he in turn was the father of Newell Nelson, the founder Lorimer and Sandy Nelson of Nelson Angus Farm also know as Beaver Brook Angus. The original property still in the family ownership 162 years later consisted of 180 acres. Newell Nelson purchased his first Angus bull in 1914 from Henry Lenz at Lyle, Minnesota, another Lenz bull that was used early in the program was Vica’s Frank, registration number 246983, born February 27, 1917. The first registered Angus cattle recorded by Newell Nelson were sired by him. Newell Nelson purchased his first registered Angus females in 1917 when he took a train from Lyle, Minnesota to St. Paul, Minnesota for the Minnesota State Angus Sale that was held at the University of Minnesota Campus in St. Paul. There he purchased his first registered Angus females and brought them back to Lyle, Minnesota on a train. American Angus Association records show that at the time Newell Nelson became a member of the American Angus Association it was located in the Purebred Livestock building at the Chicago Stockyards in Chicago, Illinois and indicate that he became a lifetime member of the American Angus Association on February 22, 1921. Outstanding bulls used in the Nelson herd were Elbar of Madelia 58, registration #1229178, born May 29, 1949, bred in the Martin Snyder herd at Madelia, Minnesota, rich in the best of Earl Marshall breeding; General of Clear View 2, registration #1332541, born June 2, 1950, proved to be a great sire and General of Clear View, registration #1511683, born May 9, 1951, he left many exceptional females. Newell Nelson who died in 1988 was married to Bellena Nelson who passed away in 1990. Their son that carries the herd on today, Lorimer was born on November 27, 1932 and he became a member of the American Angus Association on March 31, 1955. Early records show that registered Angus bulls were purchased by Newell Nelson in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s from Roy Miller at Viewlawn Farms in Mabel, Minnesota, Charles Miller, Viewlawn Farms in Mabel, Minnesota, M. L. Snyder, Madelia Angus at Madelia, Minnesota, Manley and Jack Miles at Riceville, Iowa. Outstanding bulls that were used in the Nelson herd were Juan Lad 58 of Ida born April 8, 1954 from the Johnson Bros. herd at Ida Grove, Iowa sired by the famous Ebonys Lad of Ida out of the great Juanada of Glencarnock, a bull that left many great daughters in the Nelson herd. He was followed by Eiltonier 747, born July 12, 1957, bred in the Eiltonier Angus herd in Tipton, Iowa, the grandson of the International Grand Champion Wintonier 4 from the great Bemindful Maid family, he to left many great females in the program. He was followed by Meadowmere 1690, born March 20, 1960, bred in the Meadow Lane herd in North Salem, New York, sired by the 1952 International Grand Champion Ankonian 3216 out of a great cow from the Shady Lane herd at Clear Lakes, South Dakota, he too was a great sire in the program. On June 13, 1964 the Minnesota Angus Field Day was held at the Nelson farm with the feature speakers being Bob Jacobs, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Dean Hurlbut, American Angus Association, St. Joseph, Missouri, Vern Kerchberger, American Angus Association, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Tom Burke, President of the Minnesota Junior Angus Association, Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, and Minnesota Junior Angus Association Officers Richard Leary, Caledonia, Minnesota and Dean Denzer, Le Sueur, Minnesota. A large crowd of 250 Angus enthusiasts attended. The bull that served a long tenure service in the Nelson herd was O H A Mr Traveler 937, bred in the Paulsen herd at Lone Rock, Wisconsin and sired by Q A S Traveler 23-4. Over the years Newell and Lorimer Nelson participated in the Midwest Fat Steer Show sponsored by the Hormel Company at the Mower County Fair in Austin, Minnesota. Other outstanding bulls used in the Nelson herd were Century Mark, registration #4795624, born June 19, 1965, bred in the Fourche River Ranch herd in Perryville, Arkansas sired by the 1958 International Grand Champion Bull Dor Macs Bardoliermere 100 as well as Quincius of Wye, registration #6026124, born May 8, 1968, bred in the Wye Plantation herd at Queenstown, Maryland, proved to be a gratifying sire. Other outstanding bulls used were S S Rito X01 2X14, registration #10231894, born April 9, 1982 and S S Landmark L56 L29, registration #10231816, born April 7, 1982, both bred in the Phil Abrahamson herd in Lanesboro, Minnesota. In the 50’s and 60’s large drafts of females from the farm were sold to the Equen Plantation at Minter City, Mississippi and to the Rocky Creek Ranch at LaGrange, Texas. They also sold cattle in the North Iowa Angus Association Sale and the program was responsible for starting many programs in the registered Angus business and supplying many commercial bulls with their private treaty program. In 1967 the Nelson’s bred and exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion bull Brookmere 1032 at the Sioux Empire Angus sale in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Over the years the Nelson’s have had many close relationships with fellow Angus breeders, Bob and Don Seater from Northwood, Iowa, Jerry Sullivan of Osage, Iowa, Jack and Manley Miles, Riceville, Iowa, Bill Imlau, Northwood, Iowa, Harold Wright, Kasson, Minnesota and the Burke Brothers, Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. The Nelson farm had a very unique location inasmuch as it was located next to the City limits on the east side of Lyle, Minnesota right on the Minnesota Iowa State line. Lorimer and Sandy were married in 1978; the blended family consisted of five children, Larry, Dawn, Joelle, Kelly and Mike. What a remarkable story of the Nelson Angus herd, thinking that this family has lived in the United States of America on the same farm for 162 years over a span of seven generations—the first Angus cattle came to the United States of America in 1873, 144 years ago. The Nelson Angus herd is the third herd in the State of Minnesota to reach the century mark, the others being the Sunnyslope herd at Lanesboro, Minnesota owned by the Abrahamson family, the herd established in 1898 and the other, the Viewlawn herd at Mabel, Minnesota owned by the Miller family established in 1903. Aberdeen-Angus Breeder M. L. Snyder, of Madelia, is honored at Annual Breeders’ meeting at St. Paul. Receives Plaque for Production of Junior Winners. Members of the Minnesota Aberdeen-Angus Association are determined to reward achievements in livestock raising even if the successful breeder does not go in for big time shows and blue ribbons. The photo above shows a plaque being presented to M. L. Snyder of Madelia, Aberdeen-Angus breeder who has hung up an amazing reputation for turning out prize winning 4-H calves. The award was presented at the annual meeting of the Minnesota Association held January 23, 1942 in connection with Farm and Home Week at University Farm, St. Paul. New officers of the Association, besides Mrs. Brown and Mr. Chase, are Kenneth McGregor of Ada, VicePresident, and Paul Abrahamson, of Lanesboro, Alfred Falkenhagen of Kasson, E. H. Schloeman, of Mankato and William Strickler of Euclid. Snyder, who has a high quality herd of breeding cattle but who does not go in extensively for show stuff, has raised Aberdeen-Angus calves that have been Grand Champions at the Junior Live Stock Show, South St. Paul. Two more calves that won the Over-All Championship at South St. Paul have been of Snyder breeding. E. W. Brown, Luverne was selected President, Kenneth McGregor Vice-President, Clement C. Word is just received from Max Goldberg, owner of the Goldberg Stock Farm herd of Aberdeen-Angus cattle, at Moorhead, Minnesota, to the effect that Billy Edwards, well known fitter and showman has accepted a position with him as herdsman. Max has some excellent cattle with which Billy should be able to do something, and he probably will. country in addition to the steady progress in the corn belt and substantial inroads in western areas. Breeders present were also very much interested in his remarks on the new regulation requiring all calves registered after June 1st to be tattooed for definite identification. A beautiful bronze and walnut plaque which the State Association had obtained for M. L. Snyder, of Madelia, as recognition as the Minnesota breeder who had bred the best Aberdeen-Angus steer at the 1941 Junior Live Stock Show was displayed during the meeting. This plaque had been presented earlier in the day to Mr. Snyder by Mr. Tomhave during the meeting of the Minnesota Beef and Dual Purpose Cattle Producers’ Association.

Discussed and unanimously passed was a resolution recommending that steers at Minnesota’s South St. Paul Junior Live Stock Show be exhibited in weight instead of age classifications. A similar resolution had been passed by the Minnesota County Agent’s Association in December as well as the State Hereford and Shorthorn Associations and the Minnesota Live Stock Breeders’ Association. The treasurer’s report showed a cash balance on hand of $141.68, an increase of $36.28 with all bills paid. The Minnesota page in the Aberdeen-Angus Journal was discussed and all breeders were urged to send to the secretary any and all items regarding their cattle, themselves or their families which can be used to make the page more interesting. Regarding herd write ups, several of which have appeared during the past year your secretary explained that they were selected at random and several of the oldest and best herds in the state have not yet been covered. If any Minnesota breeder or firm has due cause to believe that their herd should have a write up in the Minnesota page ahead of other breeders your secretary will be glad to hear directly from them. No one has been intentionally slighted and if we had covered all the breeders in the state during the first year we would probably have had to write about the weather this year and even that is a subject one has to be careful of now. However, we believe that nearly everyone is more interested in news of cattle and their breeders than in history so let’s all pitch in and send a little item to your state secretary now and then. We are going to have a sale in Blue Earth. Do you believe early in June would be a better date than the late September or early October dates we have been using? Your secretary wants to hear from every breeder interested in consigning to the state sale, by March 1st.
