History

he NC Hereford Association was organized on September 7, 1939 at a meeting in Wadesboro, NC. The first officers were Adam Lockhart, president; W. E. Webb, vice-president; and Dr. J. M. Lynch, secretary-treasurer.

The first state sale was held in 1945 at Statesville, NC, and another group was elected to lead the association. B.B. Miller of Mt. Ulla, a prominent Hereford breeder, was elected president; Dr. R. A. Allgood of Fayetteville was elected vice-president; and Mrs. Helen Chandler of Asheville was elected secretary-treasurer, a position she held for many years. Mrs. Chandler was recognized as a leader in promoting Herefords in North Carolina. Some other early Hereford breeders who played a big part in the NC Hereford Association were A. W. Fanjoy of Statesville, C. W. Mayo of Tarboro, W. S. Barber of Mt. Ulla, and Robert G. Shipley of Vilas. As numbers of Polled Hereford breeders grew in the states, the NC Polled Hereford Association was organized in August of 1967 in Raleigh, NC. The officers of this organization were W. P. Morris, Jackson, NC, president; W. L. Teeter, Mooresville, NC, vice-president; and W. T. Gray, Ahoskie, NC, secretary-treasurer. The first Polled Hereford sale was November 11, 1968. A very active group of women organized the NC Pollettes in 1976 to promote Polled Herefords and encourage young people to get involved with cattle activities. Both the NC Hereford Association and NC Polled Hereford Association existed until 2008 when the state group dropped “Polled” from its name to conform with the national organizations. 61 • 2017-2018 North Carolina Directory
