THE WILD EARTH ISSUE Apr/May 2012 / ISSUE 22

LETTER TO YOU Much has happened since we published our last issue, including a round-the-world trip to South Africa, followed by London Fashion Week. In January, a spur of the moment project saw me going to Thula Thula Private Game Reserve in SA, to work with the Lawrence Anthony Foundation on their 2012 Last Rhino Campaign. Whilst there, I was blessed to spend time with inspired Conservationist and Author, Lawrence Anthony. Referred to as ‘The Elephant Whisperer’ after his best-selling book, Lawrence is known for rehabilitating 15 rogue elephants that were due to be culled. This is the least of his many impressive conservation efforts, including rescuing animals in the Baghdad Zoo at the start of the Iraq war, and creating a foundation in South Africa that includes wildlife, environmental and community initiatives. To be in the company of this-larger-than-life man, and his beloved 6- ton elephants, was an experience of a lifetime. Sadly, Lawrence suddenly passed away from a heart attack a few weeks after I interviewed him. I was the last journalist to go into the bush with him, and it is a gift I will always treasure. My time with the Lawrence Anthony Foundation in South Africa took me to London, to co-produce Prophetik by Jeff Garner’s AW2012 runway show. LAF and Coco Eco sponsored, and we had a whirlwind week creating a very special show, one of the few sustainable highlights of London Fashion Week. Jeff is already a huge talent in his own right, and produces a stunning collection. What made this very special however, was a moving presentation by the

Lawrence Anthony Foundation, about the current rhinopoaching crisis in Africa. It was a privilege to be a part of this very special project for such a vital issue, and bring fashion with a cause to a highly visible platform such as London Fashion Week. As we now publish our Wild Earth Issue in honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, we highlight all things for our planet, to both raise awareness of some of our more pressing issues, as well as celebrate what’s good. Cover girl Eden Sher talks about her passion for making a difference, whilst Adrian Grenier, Peter Glatzer, and Sebastian Copeland grace our Men We Love column for their planetary efforts. Laurie David, Alexandra Cousteau, and contribution, and our fashion and beauty stories celebrate what’s hot for spring. Enjoy this special issue, and we are looking forward to sharing some very exciting news soon. In the meantime, this one’s for you, Lawrence! Sincerely,

Estethica London Fashion Week 2012 WRITTEN by: Sass

London Fashion Week has always been known as the cutting edge home of design, never failing to delight and surprise. In the burgeoning ethical fashion calendar, Estethica, as part of London Fashion Week, is one of the must-see eco fashion trade events on the calendar. With only ten labels showing and two collaborative projects, Estethica had a strong, focused, and juried collection of designers at this season’s event.

MONSOON High street giant Monsoon not only showcased their collection at Estethica, but also sponsors the event. The popular UK chain has a long history of supporting artisans and craftspeople from around the world. With a focus on artisanal workmanship at accessible price points, Monsoon manages to accommodate both, while simultaneously helping improve the lives of women and children in Asia through the Monsoon Trust. With tribal and folkloric inspirations, the collection is young, directional and easy-to-wear. Their bohemian roots still inform the company’s philosophy and business practices through support of ethical design trust to help support farmers make the transition to organic cotton production. The company works with organic cotton, women’s cooperatives overseen by NGO’s, and supports Fair-trade.

HENRIETTA LUDGATE Henrietta Ludgate’s luxury collection featured clean, highly tailored lines, with intriguing hemlines in classic black, in sharp contrast to the brilliant hues of the Spring Summer collection. A supporter of slow fashion, Ludgate’s understated silhouettes are haunting in their simplicity and sophistication, with a slight retro sensibility. JUNKY STYLING Junky Styling is an innovative design-led label founded by self taught designers Anoka Sanders and Kerry Seager in 1997. The entire collection is produced from the highest quality second hand clothing, which is deconstructed, re-cut and completely transformed, described by the New Yorker as ‘an eccentrically chic line of mutant couture’. With a focus on individuality, with no two garments exactly the same, a design concept described as ‘high fashion street couture’, Junky Styling specialize in reconstructing men’s wear into edgy, contemporary reconstructed women’s wear. Their work consists of a ‘Wardrobe Surgery’ service, where customers bring their own clothes in for transformation, a women’s ready-to-wear collection, a bespoke service for special occasions, with experimental off-the-peg pieces available through their East End store.

ADA ZANDITON Ada Zanditon’s vision is to create a unique conceptual narrative through her designs that evolve over time. Taking cues from science and the environment, Zanditon’s signature is modern architectural forms, with a blend of history and fantasy. Her quirky, theatrical creations have a sense of drama and strength and yet maintain an element of playfulness and romanticism. Inspired by the process of evolution and biomimicry, Zanditon creates innovative designs through mimicking nature. Each collection aims to bring awareness to the source of the inspiration, as well as support charities, including the Bat Conservation Trust and the Seahorse Trust. VICTIM FASHION STREET Mei Hui Liu, the founder of Victim Fashion Street, has a street rebel’s eye for recycled materials. Her naïve punk approach to recycled fashion is her signature style, with a ten-year heritage. Combining vintage fabrics from multiple eras, Lui carefully crafts scraps and shreds of antique lace, creative patch-worked designs. With a hand sewing machine and a vin-

cut and paste philosophy. Liu’s reconstructions are an ode to romance, combined with a passion for sustainability and with more than a nod to the street. Her slashed, sewn, blended and mended garments have a naive charm that combines style references from multiple eras to match the varied sourced textiles.

CHARINI SURIYAGE Combining her Sri Lankan heritage with modern design, Charini Suriyage’s handcrafts luxurious eco-lingerie, which exudes elegance, sensuality and a timeless glamour. Her collection celebrates the heritage crafts of Sri Lanka, which she incorporates into her creations, thereby helping to support the craftspeople, as well as the craft. Eschewing the use of elastics, plastics, harmful dyes or metal in her eco-collection, Charini is inspired by her own ‘no-waste’ policy, with upcycled elastics forming the Victim Fashion Street basic element of the line. Hand woven silk, lace and satin sourced from artisan communities across Sri Lanka, are also incorporated into her collection. Nothing symbolizes the end of another dark and dreary winter season more than bright colorful spring summer collections. This winter, most of Europe has labored under unseasonably cold weather, making us look forward all the more to the warmer season and brighter colors. The Spring Summer 2012 collections are a riot of color, with some of the brightest color combinations we’ve seen on the catwalk for a long time; hyper colors and psychedelic prints in brilliant fuchsia, tangerine and scarlet, and color blocking incorporating them all in a single design. The easiest and most effective way to incorporate these sunshine brights into your wardrobe, is to combine them with black, making for an easy way to update and brighten up your existing wardrobe, and signal the end of Seasonal Affective Disorder with some color therapy.

Jewelry is one of those everyday luxuries — we don’t really need but wear because they make us feel good. Let’s make sure, then, that those shiny pretty things are created in a way that does not harm the planet or people who make them. Thankfully there are many great jewelry companies that create pieces from fairtrade, fair-mined, reclaimed and upcycled metals and use sustainable processes that ensure your conscience is clear as day.

SEPTEMBER ROSE UK-based jewelry company September Rose creates beautiful jewelry using the purest raw materials. The fairtrade and fairmined ecological gold is sourced from Oro Verde — an Ecological and socially responsible project in Colombia. The supply chain for September Rose is one of only twenty jewelers in the world to be granted a Fairtrade Foundation license, tracking the supply chain for the company’s gold pendants. The sparkle added Foundation, which issues each piece a unique code that can be used to trace its origin, and Ruby Fair. September Rose’s core philosophy Pure Luxury is built around the belief that one person’s luxury should not come at the expense of another’s suffering or cause damage to precious ecological systems around the world. “I feel an enormous amount of responsibility to do justice to the beautifully pure materials I use,” Rose says. “I strive to create simple yet elegant pieces of jewelry that I hope will prove to be timeless. ALKEMIE The designers behind Alkemie, Dara Gerson and Ashley Lowengrub, are a husband-and-wife team who both previously had great success running conventional jewelry lines.Years of experience in the jewelry industry soon made them weary of the toxic working conditions and tries. One day they decided it was something they could no longer continue to support and the pair began seeking out local eco-friendly materials. All Alkemie’s designs are made of 100% reclaimed metal and manufactured by hand in downtown Los Angeles. When leather is used it is sourced from sustainable cattle farmers and dyed with earth-friendly dye. Each month, Gerson and Lowengrub selects a charity to believe an integral part of being a sustainable company is supporting practices and causes you believe in,” the pair says. “By purchasing a piece of Alkemie Jewelry you will be a part of this charitable action.” The line has earned a devoted international following based not only on their extraordinary environmental leadership, but also on the uniqueness of their designs. Celebrities as far-ranging as Dave Navarro and Demi Lovato have been spotted donning Alkemie pieces, which tells you something about their diverse appeal. It doesn’t seem possible that a piece of jewelry can at once be rugged, delicate, elegant and hip, but Alkemie shows us that it indeed is. Maybe the magnetic appeal lies in those contradictions? www.alkemiejewelry.com

Kunz’s committment to sustainable practices inspired her to create a “green” studio approach, which encompasses not only the reclaimed metals and fairtrade stones she uses to create her jewelry, but also everything from price tags and collateral to gift packaging and shipping supplies, which are made from recycled materials or renewable resources whenever possible. In addition to her signature line, Kunz donates her time and talents as a guest designer for Raven erished women worldwide through design partnerships and micro-enterprise opportunities. www.tiffanykunzdesign.com

DLC BROOKLYN DLC Brooklyn creates highly detailed, exclusive jewelry with both an edge and sophistication that if highly fashionable without compromosing on sustainability principles. Handcrafted in New York by designer Susan Domelsmith, DLC Brooklyn jewelry is made from materials rescued from shuttered jewelry factories in Providence, Rhode Island. “This collection pays homage through giving old components new life,” said Domelsmith, who started the line inspired by a void in her own jewelry box. DLC Brooklyn, previously known as Dirty Librarian Chains, has garnered the attention of fashion insiders worldwide as well as celebrities like Debbie Harry, Kate Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow. Domelsmith draws inspiration from nature and feels that it is her duty to protect it. NEWAGE

How to age gracefully in a world of needles and knives WRITTEN by: Leilah Mundt

I know you have been there. You are happily going about your day when you happen to get a glimpse of yourself in the mirror that stops you dead in your tracks. “Whoa,” you think to yourself, “since when do I have such deep creases in my forehead? And my eyes…are those crow’s feet? Why do I look fabulous summer years ago. You remember, the one you lived with reckless abandon? You see yourself, in a convertible with the top down, mini dress on, sun sizzling on your skin as you work on that perfect, Highway to meet your favorite girlfriend for eats… and let’s face it, drinks. Lots of them. If you are anything like me, you wouldn’t take those days back for the world. (Well maybe just one or two of them.) The fact is that the indulgent living of our youth makes us who we are today. But I will be honest; as much as I love the person that the years have made me, I would really rather not see the years on my face. Sure, a laugh line here or there is charming. sun damage, age spots, sagging skin and wrinkles, however, are not. So, how do we age gracefully in a world where we are bombarded with images of seemingly ageless celebrities on magazine covers, TVs, and billboards every day? With whom do we compare ourselves when we truly don’t know what “work” our peers have undergone to look the way they do?

NEW AGE | Continued

As a person who is concerned with the toxic load my body is confronted with every day, what anti-aging choices can I feel good about? And lastly, how can I be sure to gently nudge back the signs of aging without going too far, so that I always look like myself, as opposed to a weird version of myself crossed with a feline. For those of us who prefer to stave off the needles and knives for a bit longer, there have been remarkable advances made in effective noninvasive technologies. When skin just doesn’t bounce back like it used to, ultrasound therapy may be the best bet for tightening and toning. Ultherapy, a treatment now offered in many medical aesthetic practices, uses sound waves to target tissue deep under the skin. When this tissue is heated by ultrasound it begins to tighten and a lifting effect can be expected over the next two to three months. The result is as close to a facelift as you can get naturally, without surget in your lunch hour with zero downtime. Ulthera can also be performed on the brow for a nice lift, which can eliminate hooding of the eyelid. Because the skin gradually tightens over the course of a few months, your friends and co-workers won’t be shocked by a suddenly new you. For stimulating collagen within the comfort of your own home (and without any pain) LED light therapy can be a great option. Baby Quasar, a

device designed for at home use, emits an infrared light over an inch deep into the skin. This special more collagen and elastin. The result is stronger port a dramatic improvement in the appearance of dark spots. For people who experience breakouts, Quasar makes a blue light that can help kill P. Acne bacteria. If you are one of the lucky ones who need help with aging and acne, using both lights interchangeably can seriously improve your skin. The devices are relatively easy to use, though a bit time consuming, and they don’t come cheap. The professional grade model, Quasar MD, is a steep $795. However, you can expect to dish out a whole lot When it comes to the aging face, sometimes you just need to peel it off. Exfoliating your skin can help reduce most of the signs of aging, as well as for a complete resurfacing, usually done with a lation without any of the pain and downtime associa powerful home peel can be an amazing addition to any regimen. “Glow and Go” Power Peel Exfoliant by January Labs is nothing short of a skincare miracle, and can be used a couple times a week mon oil and phenol derived from basil, this smooth gel will provide a surge of heat when applied to the face, increasing circulation and oxygenating skin. Users beware- this product is extremely addictive. Once you get a glimpse of the fresh, glowing skin that is revealed after just one use, you may never want to be without it. That would actually be a good thing, as far as aging is concerned. This treatment will continue to stimulate your skin with every use, which will result in more collagen and elastin production- a more youthful face for you. Of course, there may come a day that you feel ready for the total overhaul that only surgery can provide. Until then, exercise, eat lots of greens, drink even more water and, oh yeah, smile. It looks good on you.

This peach of a line from Georgia is as lovely as it is effective! WRITTEN by: Leila

Mundt, Beauty Editor

Inspiration can manifest in so many ways.

For some, oil on canvas, for

like Suzanne LeRoux of One Love Organics, botanicals, and all that they offer. A lawyer by trade, Suzanne found herself scouring bookstores for antique skincare recipes in her free time. So inspired by the beauty of nature, she was compelled to leave law and create a simple, yet powerful line of products that would take the place of all those overdone and underwhelming bottles

Suzanne’s passion for ingredients is apparent as she speaks, through the thickest of lovely, southern accents. Suddenly I wish I were sipping sweet tea with her at her home in Georgia while we twist open a beautiful jar of her Waterless Multi-Balm, a One-Love original and new absolute must-have for me, and talk about how cool it is that the super-critical chia extract in it delivers 600 mg of Omega 3 to the skin. Whether it is chia, watermelon seed, or Bulgarian Rose, every ingredient found in every product has a purpose are loaded with weak, ineffective components, products like One Love Organics shine. Comprised of just four simple, yet impressive (and borderline addictive) core products, the line is meant to deeply cleanse and nurture skin of all types and ages. Easy Does It, with cold-pressed apple oil, is an essential cleanser that truly belongs in every home. As effective on the face as it is on the hair, or anywhere for that matter, this liquid gently cleanses and softens, leaving just a hint of natural apple scent in the air. Love Springs Eternal, the line’s premier anti-aging serum, is shockingly potent. After just a few uses, be prepared to see dreamy, clear skin that feels soft and youthful. For skin that needs an extra kick, Brand New Day scrub polishes and brightens, especially

when used with My New Best Friend Skin Shammy, a

In the true spirit of simplicity and with a real “less is more” attitude, Skin Savior reigns supreme as the king of all beauty balms. In a single day, I found myself patting this rich, silky salve around my eyes for moisture, smoothing it on my decollate for a pretty glow, rubbing a bit on my baby girl’s chapped cheeks for comfort and then using it at night to remove stubborn eye makeup. Trust me- one whiff of the light, somehow freshly baked, aroma of organic vanilla and you too will be looking for any excuse to dip in. Thoughtfully and thoroughly designed, One Love Organics is a winning lineup. Sometimes in the fast pace of life, it can be the simple pleasures, like aromatic, handcrafted concoctions, which bring a sense of peace and enjoyment to the day. But truly inspiring is the knowledge that, somewhere in Georgia, another woman is living her passion- and thus making the world a more beautiful place. www.oneloveorganics.com

EDEN SHER: LARGER THAN LIFE

A Free Spirit, On A Mission To Make Her Mark!

Eden Sher is not your typical young Hollywood actress. At 20 years old, she has already amassed an impressive TV resume, and can now be seen WRITTEN by: Anna Griffin as Sue Heck, the socially awkward early-teen middle daughter on ABC’s The Middle. However, when you meet Eden, there is clearly nothing awkward about her, and one is immediately taken with her huge zest for life, free spirit, and passionate quest to make her mark on the world.

Coco Eco Magazine: Eden, tell us about some of the eco practices in your life? Eden Sher: On a holistic level, I just do things that are not wasteful. Everything I eat is all local and organic, I recycle, and I’m trying to have a compost heap in my backyard. I think it’s also eco-friendly on another level, to be involved with your community. I am involved with an organization called $2 Shows that is all about getting the community together.

the earth. I learned that everything needs to be sustainable, and am now learning about farming, and how easy it is to have food be plentiful. It is not as hard as we like to make it seem. We just have to utilize what’s local. Whilst volunteering, I had enough time to see the country, explore, and stay with a host family so it was complete and total immersion. I think that’s so important when you travel. You don’t want to be that American outsider. CEM: Where else have you been?

CEM: What is $2 Shows? What does the organization do? ES: My friend started it in high school. He began by putting on concerts in the backyard, to promote local charities and people who need help. It turned into this huge thing, and we started having mini Coachella’s in peoples’ back yards. We found out it was a big deal for people in communities to feel congratulated and exposed, and it gives a platform to local artists to express themselves. There are musicians, vendors, and local artists. Admission is two dollars, and all the proceeds go to whatever charity we are promoting that day. CEM: What are some of the other things you like to do? You mentioned travel and volunteering earlier?

ES: I volunteered in Nicaragua twice, went to India last summer, and this year am going to Tanzania. In India I did a teaching program, and taught pre-school children English, and played with them. They have this child-minding facility for kids before they go to school, so you’re looking after children aged one through four, and it’s a small room and pretty dirty. They’ve become quite reliant on outside volunteers, and year-round there are people helping from all over the world who come together to help, and have a really good time.

“I wanted to leave my mark, and to help out in some way. It was important to affect another person positvely while I was there.”

ES: I love to travel. The volunteering sort of became secondary, but I really have this dire urge to explore new territories, learn new things, and meet new people. I think it’s intrinsic in me, but also think it’s human nature to want to know things about other people. CEM: How did this discovery begin? ES: It started when I was 15 and took a trip to Nicaragua. I felt that if I was going to visit this place, I wanted to leave my mark and to help out in some way. It was important to affect another person positively whilst I was there. I did a volunteer trip, and had so much fun. It’s almost like the hard work made it that much more gratifying.

CEM: And Tanzania?

ES: Probably the same thing. I really liked it. I did like learning about sustainable agriculture, but it was hands-on manual labor, and I’m probably not going to become a farmer! CEM: You have plans to climb Kilimanjaro? ES: Yes. The goal in Tanzania is to do a three-week volunteering program, and then do the ten-day trek. I have been training for this hike to Kilimanjaro, and it is so intense. You have to climb stairs two-three times a week, and then you have to carry a backpack with rocks in it. I’m not doing any altitude training, just really deep breathing exercises to expand my lungs, then cardio and weight training for my legs. It’s crazy!

CEM: What did you do as a volunteer? ES: We were working in sustainable agriculture, which taught me a lot about how food is grown, and affected how I eat here at home. It is so important to eat local, and to eat food that is grown from

CEM: Let’s talk about your career. You are on The Middle. How’s that going? ES: I love it. It truly is a gift to be able to go to work COVER STORY | Continued

everyday and love what you do. It’s a rare thing that I try to never take for granted. I love everyone I work with, and really love my role, and know I will look back on this time and say, “Wow! That was a beautiful time in my life.” I’m trying to not forget it now and can currently say I am having the best time. shooting it, and once it’s all done I will submit it to festivals. I am directing it and one of my best friends is starring in it. It’s all my best friends. One is the Director of Photography, another is the Producer, and then others are helping as PA’s and Grips. I am also doing a movie with my friend Charlie McDermott, who is on the show, this summer. Charlie actually wrote it and it is called Imagigary. It’s about a kid who goes to college and is lonely, so re-imagines his imaginary friends from childhood. I’ve got a pretty sweet role in it.

“I really have this dire urge to explore new territories, learn new things, and meet new people.” CEM: Amazing. What else really excites you? ES: I love yoga and started when I was about twelve. I’m a yoga nerd! I began in eighth grade, and have loved it ever since. I did it everyday in India, which was a meditative process, and there you only do yoga to get closer to the Gods. It sounds clichéd but it’s really calmed me down, and I start each day with a very clear intention. If that intention is about love: To love life, to love what you do, and the people around you, you will focus that energy. It’s surprising to just have that in everything. And I do. When I start to forget that, I take a moment and deep breath to remind myself of how fortunate I am to be living the life I am right now. I love it! From volunteering to traveling the globe, acting, directing, yoga, composting, and everything in between, Eden’s passion for life will take her far. After a really fun shoot, you can’t help but wonder what’s next for this bright young star, but whatever it is, we have no doubt that it will be larger than life. Two months turned into a longer stint, and now she has been looking after two baby southern white rhinos named Thabo and Nthombi for two years.

The daughter of media mogul Ted Turner is a national environmental advocate, a mother and eco-living expert dedicated to creating a healthy and sustainable future for our children. But only is pollution causing global warming, but it is also making our children sick,” she says. “Our children have become the ‘canaries in the coalmine.’ We must take the necessary steps to reduce the harmful chemicals in our air, land, water and our own bodies,” Laura deeply states. She advocates strongly about keeping toxic chemicals out of

Rhinos are killed by poachers for their horns. In 2008, 83 rhinos were poached, last year in 2011, 448 rhino were poached and so far 80 have been killed this year. All for the horn, which is only has medical value (it does not). There is an immediate immense challenge to stopping the extinction of the southern white rhino. Thabo was found abandoned at a day old in the free state with his umbilical cord still attached. He was severely dehydrated and constipated. Nthombi at 5 months was found in the Kruger area after her mom was gauged by a rhino-bull. When Alyson arrived Thabo was on his way to his new home at Thula Thula, an exclusive game reserve in Zululand. Nthombi came in her 2nd week and Alyson immediately started looking after her. After 2 months Nthombi and Alyson went to Thula Thula to help settle her in. It did not take long for Nthombi and Thabo to fall in love and become inseparable. Thula Thula created the perfect home for their further rehabilitation into the wild. Thabo and Nthombi stay completely protected with full-armed guards 24/7 ever since a recent poaching. We are all potentially exposed to hundreds of toxic chemicals on a daily basis from fossil fuel emissions to chemicals in our water. Childhood chronic diseases are at epidemic proportions, including asthma, autism, ADHD, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Childhood cancer rates have also been increasing every year for the past thirty years. Laura is working to get the word out in order to protect our natural systems that support all life like our air, water, natural environment and food supplies. This means she is constantly speaking, raising money, blogging on her website, lauraseydel. com, sending out information through social media and trying to promote individuals, programs and organizations that are working on similar goals. Laura is also the chairperson of the Captain Planet Foundation, which promotes environmental education and gardens in schools, and Zero Waste Zone, an organization that promotes communities working together to change current disposal methods of consumed products. She also co-founded Mothers and Others for Clean Air and the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper. She has received numerous humanitarian and environmental awards for her work to date and is clearly a woman on a mission. MARGO MARRONE

For many of us, a look through our medicine cabinets and makeup bags would uncover a plethora of products full of toxins and known carcinogens. Margo Marrone wants to change that. Co-founder and director of THE ORGANIC while studying for her Pharmacy degree in London. While working in London’s top hospitals and pharmacies she found the work-lacked energy, a pulse. Feeling constrained by the methodology and desired access to a wider range of ways to help and heal her patients she began to search, voraciously reading medical texts and alternative health books until she came upon Edward Bach’s “Heal Thyself ”. His short, simple text inspired her to leave her job and go back to school to study homeopathy. came more aware, and she starting checked labels and found toxins and carcinogens in many of the products she picked up. She then vowed to use only natural products during her pregnancy and found a lack of available solutions. Even in health food shops and organic markets springing up around London, there was little that she approved of. So she took matters into her own hands. Using her pharmacy and homeopathy background she re-educated herself in the fundamentals of product design using natural ingredients.

“When consumers see or try a fantastic sustainable design or product — they then have the power to choose it. To buy it. That’s enormous. The slow, painful and daily death of one of the planets most majestic creatures, the Rhinoceros, who has lived on the ear th for 60 million years is an alarming wake up call. At the current rate of about one death every 20 hours, these rhinos will be extinct in 10 years. How has this tragedy happened? And what are Authorities, Governments and animal rights activists doing to stop it? There are 5 different species of Rhinoceros. These harmless animals live in Africa and southern Asia. The Javan rhino species was declared extinct in October 2011. The only predator to the animal is a human poacher. The IUCN (the International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List declares that three of the species are critically endangered. The current population of rhinos in Africa is 20,150 southern white rhino and 4,200 black rhinos. Over the past 45 years, poachers have wiped out 100,000 rhino in Africa. Reserve own92

CAN WE DO

BETTER? WRITTEN by: Kelly Gallagher PHOTOGRAPHY by: Kelly Gallagher

I sit here once again, a citizen of the planet and resident one of the most poorly planned and wasteful cities in America (Los Angeles). I attempt to write an article that enlightens yet tells the truth about a complicated subject; power. And one more time I realize the frailties of the human condition; mine included. I have so many questions. I am constantly in what is “wrong” when it comes to balancing the environment, the economy and the truth. What I do know is we can all do better. I think matter who is in charge, “power” can corrupt. The eco-friendly community is adamantly against mining and oil production yet windmills, solar dryer, smart cars and smart phones just to name a few of our creature comforts, are all products of mining. Should we give back (or just give up?) our jewels and diamonds in the name of preserving the environment? Should we eschew computers and Internet access to preserve 102

power? Even the production of our eco fashion can sometimes be toxic (just less so). It is produced with electricity and transported by fossil fuels. Any time we manufacture anything we are increasing consumption, so where should we draw the line? Should we go back to using whale oil to light our lamps instead of fossil fuels? And why isn’t oil considered organic? It comes from Mother Earth too. Maybe it’s not considered organic because of the gigantic irresponsible disasters these oil companies leave behind. Why do we have more than 27,000 abandoned oil and gas wells beneath

Why do we have more than 27,000 abandoned oil and gas wells beneath the Gulf of Mexico? ignored for decades? According to an AP investigation, no one -- not industry, nor government -- is checking to even see if they are even leaking. Why can’t we do better? I think harnessing the wind is a great thing but I am not so sure that a sea of giant metal trees replacing the sea of abandoned oil wells is what Mother Nature intended either. And again, they are made of solar panels drive wildlife from their natural habitats or is that just gas pipelines? Truth or hypocrisy? I guess it depends on whose side you’re on. Back to Los Angeles; the city where we all have our own cars and we all drive them everywhere, even across the street. most expensive and toxic batteries on the planet. If we all replaced our cars with hybrids and electric cars in name of sustainability, where do all the dead cars go, how much energy does it take to recycle them, and where do we all plug in? And where were the city planners when it came to designing public transportation? (Well, it’s actually not their fault.) You see, once upon a time, we had public transportation in Los Angeles and numerous other cities across America. We had a trolley car system that fell prey to both modernization and corporate criminal conspiracy. General Motors operated a subsidiary corporation to buy up struggling streetcar systems and change them to rubber-tire vehicles for the rail cars. By 1950, GM had been involved in the replacement of more than one hundred street car operations- including those of Los Angles, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Salt Lake City – with GM manufactured buses. A federal grand jury found the giant and unfortunate result of this thinking was that Americans would no longer have transit options and that the car would become a prerequisite to survival with disastrous consequences for energy consumption. The automobile once represented the best of modern civilization while the trolley was simply an old-fashioned

My question is: Can’t we do better? If corporations took the money they had in their coffers for litigation and lawsuits and put it towards sustainable LEED construction complete with emission controls, could we really have sustainable oil production? In Europe they drive small cars. Should we regulate the size of the cars manufacturers sell so we can reduce the amount of energy consumption and road wear? If we allowed new technologies to proceed could we make the world a better place? Man’s greed for gold, diamonds, oil, water, land and ultimately power has driven civilizations to the brink of ruin for as long as history is recorded. Everything takes energy. It all comes down to personal choices. What are yours?
