As I write this letter, I am doing the final review of Coco Eco’s first print edition, and am amazed by its beauty and the immense positivity flowing throughout this issue. This is an incredibly exciting moment for our team, publishing digitally for five years, printing not being an option. As the Editor of an ecopublication, I have never wanted to create more stuff, more waste and more CO2’s that will impact an already over-burdened planet. However, after a great deal of encouragement and support from our partners, advisors and readers, EARTH ROCKS! now marks a significant new direction, as Coco Eco enters into the realm of print.

This very special issue contains the ultimate in eco-luxury, which is the modern-day story of living in sustainability.

LETTER TO YOU you will discover a world of fabulous people, products and places all contributing to a better world. Whether global influencers such as Andie MacDowell, Alicia Keys, Sir Richard Branson, Stella McCartney and Sting; the latest in electric vehicles, ethically sourced diamonds and toxic-free beauty products, or eco-chic travel to Milan and Koh Samui, we are far beyond the days of hemp and patchouli. Nowadays an environmentally aware and socially minded lifestyle is not one of compromise, but one of abundance, sophistication, style and fun. EARTH ROCKS! has been a tremendous journey and wouldn’t have been possible without the brilliance of all featured. The gratitude list is long, but particular thanks go to our fabulous cover girl, Andie MacDowell and her team, as well as Aveda, who generously supported us throughout, including the use of their gorgeous images in our beauty story, Culture Clash. Finally, heart-felt thanks to Coco Eco’s gifted family, especially Celebrity Photographer, Stephen Busken and Guest Creative Director, Johanna Björk. As a group their passion and talent have brought these beautiful pages to life, creating a stunning and relevant publication. They say “It takes a village to raise a child,” and in the case of this first print issue, no truer words were ever spoken.

The biggest consideration in creating a physical version of the magazine was the material used in production and the impact of distribution. Finding a way forward, each page is FSC Certified paper (preserving forests for future generations), printed with soy ink, and we will be planting trees in the Amazon rainforest to offset our footprint. Our one request is that those who have a print issue in hand share it after they have finished reading it, asking that it be recycled at the end of its lifetime. That way we maintain a 360-degree approach, and by keeping EARTH ROCKS! out of the landfill, we will have done our job.

Stephen Busken grew up inside his family’s Cincinnati bakery before moving to Los Angeles in 2006. He is best known for his entertainment related portraiture and fashion campaigns. Stephen has captured some of the most famous personalities in the world. Celebrities include: Julianne Moore, Elle Fanning, Kerry Washington, Sophia Coppola, Margot Robbie just to name a few. He has crafted images for heavyweights such as Marc Jacobs, Dolce and Gabbana, Original Penguin, Bravo, NBC Universal, Virgin Mobile, Paige Denim, and Kelly Wearstler Inc. Stephen lives between New York and Los Angeles with no kids, no pets, and a host of mid-century antiques. He is still mostly inspired by everyday people and freshly-baked desserts.

Johanna Björk works in the intersection of design, fashion and sustainability. She is the creative principal of independent design and branding studio J.Björk and is also partner in creative agency MOJO Projects. Born and raised in Sweden, she’s lived and worked in Miami, NYC and, currently, Southern California. Six years ago, she founded online magazine Goodlifer, where she shares good news and inspirational stories that help you live the Good Life, in every sense. She has contributed writings to publications such as Dwell, AIGA.org, Design Miami Magazine, Live Love Luxe, Eco Salon, Organic Authority and SwedishDesign.org. As Fashion Editor of Coco Eco, she reports on the best of sustainable fashion, from all across the world.

With over 16 years of experience, Julianne (Jules) Kaye has established herself as the go-to expert for all things beauty. Her work with celebrities such as Britney Spears, Kate Hudson, Eve Mendes, Sophia Bush, Nicole Ritchie, Kelly Osbourne, Scarlett Johansson, Madeleine Stowe and Tia Mowry, has been seen on the red carpet, in print (Harper’s Bazaar, Rolling Stone, Shape Magazine), TV commercials, music videos and films. She has also been featured on outlets such as Access Hollywood, Allure Magazine and Teen Vogue. Most recently Julianne was the on-camera make-up artist and official Maybelline Beauty Expert for the NBC series, “Fashion Star.”

London based Jodie Dalmeda is an independent Media and Celebrity Ambassador Consultant. Formerly Head of Press at Sony Music she managed campaigns for artists such as P Diddy, Julio Iglesias and P!nk. She has a wealth of experience working with non-profits, such as the United Nations and Oxfam and global brands spanning fashion, film and sport (MTV, Top Shop, Moschino, Virunga, The Didier Drogba Foundation), engaging high profile brand ambassadors and delivering innovative media strategies. Jodie also worked for four years for Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Unite as Head of Media. Passionate about empowering young people, she is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an advisor for The Prince’s Trust.

Sass Brown is Assistant Dean for the School of Art and Design at F.I.T. New York. Originally from London, Sass established herself as a designer with her own collection selling in the UK and Canada. As a researcher, writer, blogger and educator, her area of expertise is eco fashion, in all of its various expressions, from slow design and heritage craft skills to recycle, reuse and new business models. Beth first saw the human rights violations and environmental pollution occurring in the fashion industry while she was running her own company. She is also an award winning author and has shared her remarkable journey launching a brand that gives back with audiences at numerous universities, the United Nations, Google, and more.

Nichola Zed is a business development manager, art consultant and writer. She has lived and studied in Paris, Florence, Brussels, London and Australia at some of the most respected contemporary art galleries and public relations organisations. Nichola has a background in architecture, public relations and gallery management, and with this abundance of experience she is the Travel Editor for Coco Eco Magazine. She writes about everything from travel to endangered species and is passionate about creating stories that will educate and inspire.

Passionate about non-toxic products that really work and a beautiful lifestyle, Brandie Gilliam has been researching ingredients and testing products for over a decade. She is adamant about not compromising her beauty, her health or the planet with harmful ingredients. May you live in interesting times; widely purported to be an ancient Chinese curse, could not be more fitting for the times we find ourselves living in right now, as indeed we are living in interesting times. Its never been proven that the saying is in fact Chinese, never mind a curse, never the less, with all the civil unrest, financial insecurity, corporate greed, political turmoil, the war on women, endless climate disasters, and a host of other challenges that we face near and far, it does seem to be quite apropos. Yet amidst all this turmoil, we have the opportunity to make meaningful change, the possibility to right wrongs, and the chance to make a difference. My own industry, fashion, has been ‘outed’ in recent years, despite its slick exterior, as one of the dirtiest industries in the world. The second largest user of water, second only to agriculture, one of the greatest polluters globally, and responsible for more abusive working conditions than anyone ever imagined. A slew of recent tragedies have plagued the industries shiny façade, from luxury all the way down to the high street, exposing the nasty secrets normally hidden from the consumer, that fast fashion, and cheap high street clothing in particular, has a hidden cost. Perhaps not one paid at the counter, but one that takes a massive toll on the environment and the labor force used and abused through its production.

On 24th April, 2013 in Bangladesh, the Rana Plaza building collapse killed 1,129 people, and injuring an additional 2,500. Survivors, almost a year later, are still waiting for reparations from those producing garments at the factories in the building. Amongst those brands still unwilling to pay at the time of writing, are Children’s Place, J C Penney, Walmart, Benetton and Dress Barn. Yet Rana Plaza was only one in a series of tragedies, all be it the most devastating one. The Tarzeen Fashion Factory fire, also in Bangladesh, killed 117 people. While 23 Cambodian garments workers languish in jail simply for demonstrating for a raise in minimum wage for garment workers. Fashion Revolution is a global campaign to increase awareness of the true cost of fast fashion. Culminating in a day of action held on the one-year anniversary of the Rana Plaza disaster, 24th April, 2014. The campaign called for everyone to wear their clothes inside out and ask the question “Who made your clothes? A multitude of digital and in person events led up the day of action, aimed at educating consumers to the true cost of fast fashion, while showcasing clothing brands that exemplify ethical design. This ongoing campaign aims to

Chances are if its old, its good quality, its already lasted a long time, and will likely last a lot longer, so its not going to wear out like the current high street throw away fashion. Second hand clothing runs the gamut from recent purchases selling for a song at your local goodwill, to vintage stores; bricks and mortar and digital, specializing in a particular era, with a whole range of flea markets in between. Finding that special piece for a price can be a lot of fun when

Greenpeace have been focusing more and more on fashion brands as a means of exposing the hidden price tag, and the incredibly complex supply chains responsible for pollution and unfair working conditions. The current DETOX campaign draws attention to the toxic chemicals used in textile production, many of which are banned in the countries where the clothes are sold, but not banned in the countries where the clothes are made. Other reports such as Toxic Threads, which focused on toxic chemicals and water pollution through the textile supply chain, reveals a number of known carcinogens detected on the finished garments. While Deadly Denim, a Clean Clothes Campaign report focused on the human cost of sandblasting denim jeans to achieve the fashionable faded and deconstructed appearance, confirming the practice causes lung cancer. There are actually lots of alternatives that don’t compromise your sense of style or individuality whatever it may be, and that allow you to stay within your budget, and truly feel good about the clothes you buy.

For those without it, the more edited vintage stores eliminate a lot of time wasting, many focusing on a particular aesthetic or price range. The epitome of luxury vintage shopping is Didier Ludot in Paris’s famed Palais Royal, who carry original Dior New Look dresses, and classic Yves Saint Laurent ‘Le Smoking’ jackets. If trawling through racks of clothing isn’t your thing, there’s

always digital shopping, with options from eBay to Same State, and Byronesque, who carefully curate authentic, original, vintage clothing and accessories with a dark and irreverent sense of style.

Piece x Piece

If current trends are more your style, and you enjoy a lot of diversity, and an ever changing panorama or styles in your wardrobe, then you can always rent, shwop or trade; Bib and Tuck, Threadflip, and Rent the Runway are all options. Some of the clothing trade websites such as Bib and Tuck use a virtual currency equivalent, that you build by selling, and use to buy clothing, and all you ever pay for in real dollars is the shipping. Just Google “freecycling” and see how many options come up in your area to take advantage of the clothes others have grown weary of. If you’re lucky you’ll find a freecycling party, which can be tons of fun, and absolutely free! Another ethical option is to buy local, and support emerging designers. Every community has designers, makers and crafters that don’t compromise their aesthetic by working for a big brand, and pour their heart and soul into their creations. Designers producing designs that can’t be duplicated, are often labor intensive and completely unique, and that express a very personal aesthetic. Wherever you find local bakeries, artisanal pizza parlors, and art-house breweries, there will also be a smattering of boutiques

that feature local designers work. Or look out for craft and holiday markets, or simply search online. Etsy is probably the best-known digital space for the maker communities, but there’s also Selvedge Magazine’s Dry Goods Store, some really great digital resources and hordes of individual designer websites. One of my local personal favorites is STUDY New York who practice zero waste, and work with natural and organic materials. Other designers such as Alabama Chanin, not only sell their designs, but also offer workshops, and sell DIY kits and books for those adventurous enough to try their own hand. Within the maker community, there are also a number of designers that specialize in working with waste, upcycling unwanted materials into unique designs. Piece x Piece for example, that work with unwanted textile swatches direct from the mill and donated at the end of the season. Clare Bare in New York, who work with vintage textiles to produce a sexy lingerie collection. KaLLio in Brooklyn, who produce an adorable childrenswear line from upcycled men’s shirts, or State Clothing that make a cool painter style over-shirt also upcycled from men’s button down shirts. Options abound, and there is no limit to styles or price point. There are many more options; brands like Maiyet, who honor global craft, pay fair labor prices and produce a kick ass collection to boot. Fashionable brands working with sustainable materials, such as Amour Vert, who employ a zero waste policy, but also use organic and natural materials. There are trade not aid collections, epitomized by Edun, who’s entire reason de etre is to promote trade in Africa through sourcing and production. Buy one, get one models,

built on the idea that for every item sold, another will be donated to someone in need. Tom’s Shoes were built on this premise, as is Warby Parker for shades and prescription lenses. Last but not least repair and remake; some really great brands are helping extend the life of their own products by offering repair services. Nudi Jeans employ an in store tailor-mender, who will artfully repair your worn out denim jeans. TRADEremade in the UK, an in-house fashion label run by the charity TRAID, sell their collection of restyled vintage clothing online and in store. Amy DuFault’s Tailor project, documents her own personal journey of remaking the tired pieces in her wardrobe that no longer fit her style or her body, by working with a local tailor to reimagine and reinvigorate them with a little craft and a lot of skill. Conscious consumerism has never been more important than it is today. Most of us work hard for our pay checks, and I want to make sure I am not funding some capitalistic anti-Semite, gay bashing conservative who spends his vacation shooting endangered species in Africa and funds climate deniers and big oil. Not only are they working towards the elimination of excessive mining, but they also donate to various charity partners who embrace the mission on which they were founded.

Jana Hadany, VP of Marketing, shared that the inspiration came after her husband had worked in wholesale diamonds, specializing in rare colors and shapes for many years. “When the economy crashed, he got a lot of calls from people who wanted to sell back their diamonds and it seemed there was a market for buying back diamonds versus selling newly mined diamonds,” noted Hadany, “When I heard about this, to me it sounded like a classic example of up-cycling: where you stop mining natural resources and use what you have. VIVIENNE WESTWOOD DESIGNER, ACTIVIST, ICON

Upon entering the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s wildly popular exhibit Punk: Chaos to Couture, visitors were greeted by spiky-haired mannequins wearing outfits designed by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren alongside couture designer pieces inspired by them. A bit further into the exhibit, a scale replica of their shop at at 430 Kings Road in London (at different times known as “Let It Rock,” “Sex”, “Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die,” and “Seditionaries”). A significant amount of the exhibit seemed dedicated to Vivienne Westwood. Perhaps rightly so. No one has had a more significant influence of the world of punk and rebellious fashion. Westwood is an icon of style who always marches to the beat of her own drum and and activist who publicly fights for causes she believes in.

her artistic ambitions, however, she started making jewelry, which she sold from a stall on Portobello Road in London. The now-famous surname came about when Vivienne married Derek Westwood in 1962. Westwood designed her own wedding dress. It would still be another 46 years before one of her wedding gowns became a public symbol of love and loss as Carrie Bradshaw was abandoned by Mr. Big at the altar (or Public Library, to be exact) in the first Sex and the City film. The Westwoods’ had a son, but their marriage, however, was not long-lived. In 1965, Vivienne Westwood met Malcolm McLaren and a new era of her life began.

Born in a small English village in the midst of World War II, Vivienne Westwood (then Swire) grew up in a modest working class household. In her late teens she attended art school, studying fashion and jewelry making for one semester before dropping out. Feeling like there was no way for a girl like her to make a living in the arts, she instead became a school teacher. Not quite ready to abandon

Westwood and McLaren moved to a council flat, a form of public housing common in the UK, outside of London. She kept working as a teacher and in 1967 the couple had a son, Joseph Corré, who later went on to found lingerie brand Agent Provocateur (Westwood’s older son, Ben, is an erotica photographer). In 1971, they opened the now legendary store on Kings Road. Both were deeply fascinated by London’s burgeoning punk scene. “I was messianic about punk,” Westwood has said. Initially, McLaren served as Creative Director, conceiving the designs, which Westwood made. Inspiration was drawn from bondage, BDSM, biker culture and prostitutes. Leather, spikes, chains, dog collars, tartan, safety pins, razor blades and various distressing techniques were used without abandon to create a look that was outrageous and anti-establishment. Nothing was too shocking.

Westwood and McLaren began designing T-shirts with highly provocative messages. Their clientele loved it, but the government was not amused and the pair found themselves facing prosecution under British obscenity laws. Their response was not to tone it down, but instead produce even more provocative items, eventually also renaming their shop “Sex.” The slogan at the time was “rubberwear for the office.” The shop became a center for the punk movement, and shaped the style of bands like the Sex Pistols (who McLaren also managed) and The Clash. As the 80s drew near, the punk movement was fading, and so was Westwood’s relationship with McLaren. Their store, at that point called “Seditionaries,” closed in 1980 and Westwood opened “World’s End” in the same space on iconic King’s Road in Chelsa, selling her clothing under her own label. The pair broke up in the early 80s and Westwood says they did not remain friends. “He tried to destroy everything I had,” she told the British press, “he was not a very nice man.” Not one to dwell on the past, Westwood looked to the future. Her 1981 “Pirates” collection (conceived in collaboration with McLaren) became a main inspiration for the New Romantic movement — a

gender-bending, frilly counter-reaction to the punk years. Though heavily influenced by David Bowie, artists like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Boy George of Culture Club brought the style to the masses and once again put British music, and Vivienne Westwood, in the global spotlight. In 1991, Westwood was teaching fashion in Vienna and caught the eye of one of her students, Andreas Kronthaler. “I wasn’t looking for a man at all,” she told the British press, but the two became a couple and married when he was 25 and she 50, keeping it a secret because they “didn’t want to make a big fuss.” Kronthaler has remained by Westwood’s side ever since, now serving as the Creative Director of her company. “We complement each other very well,” she says. Always outspoken and fearless, Westwood has become an avid activist in the last decade. Causes close to her heart include rainforest preservation, anti-fracking, arctic preservation, political reform and climate change. She’s designed numerous cause-driven T-shirt collections to raise money and awareness, often enlisting celebrity friends to model for her. A recent endeavor is a collection of T-shirts designed by Westwood in support of Greenpeace’s Save the Arctic campaign. She has often

The Save the Arctic campaign, shot by celebrity photographer Andy Gotts, features George Clooney, Jerry Hall Georgia May Jagger, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and, of course, Westwood herself. The designer says that she is eager to promote Greenpeace’s work to save the arctic because it helps communicate the threat of climate change, an issue which has become her main priority. “The status quo will kill us,” Westwood says. “People don’t realize how quickly we are marching towards a possible mass extinction.” The T-shirts are available for sale on viviennewestwood.com. Her Vivienne Westwood Ethical Fashion Initiative Bags are “Handmade with love” in Nairobi, and produced in collaboration with the International Trade Centre — a joint body of the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation — which supports the work of thousands of women micro-producers in marginalized African communities. The project empowers craftspeople to enter the global market, provides a source of income for some of the poorest people in the world and promotes the growth of sustainable business over aid dependency. “This is not charity, this is work,” Westwood says.

And I also believe that if everyone wore just a few beautiful things, there would not be such a climate change problem,” she told British newspaper The Guardian. “In my view it is worse for someone to come out of a shop with

When you mention Andie MacDowell to anyone, the reaction is always one of warm enthusiasm. Everybody loves her, and with her soft Southern drawl, natural beauty and engaging smile, she appears to have charmed the world. An accomplished A-list actress who from independent films, such as Steven Soderbergh’s iconic Sex, Lies & Videotape, to Hollywood smash-hit movies such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Andie has forged a respected and acclaimed career and earned #1 female boxoffice draw. Also a successful model, Andie recently celebrated her 25-year relationship with L’Oreal Paris for whom she is an International Spokesperson. She now returns to the small screen in the second season of Hallmark Channel’s Cedar Cove which debuts on July 19th. The series, based on the best-selling books by Debbie Macomber, is about small-town life, with Andie playing the part of the respected municipal judge, Olivia Lockhart. Andie is a gifted writer having published several articles. As an author she gracefully expresses herself in a manner that makes her easy to relate to, and with refreshing authenticity and candor. Openly discussing her childhood in idyllic small-town America where she suffered setbacks from a very early age, to her more recent adult life experiences, she writes with poise about her personal evolution to be her best self. In a challenging world, this gives me hope, and by the time of our interview, I am excited to talk to her. Coco Eco Magazine: In Cedar Cove, you play Judge Olivia Lockhart, whose values include strength, compassion, commitment to her job and desire to do the right thing. How did this role resonate with you? Andie MacDowell: I am really proud that they have a woman who is a pillar of the town, and has this strength. Women are always seen as emotional creatures that cry, and this woman carries others and is not the typical female. In the future I am looking forward to where you are going to see the cracks, but for now I am enjoying that she is so strong. It’s the cracks that make us women strong, and taking care of everyone else is how we do it. CEM: Although a globally recognized and loved A-list celebrity, you are in your heart, a country girl. How do you successfully combine both? AMD: I’m diverse, I guess. I am definitely a country girl at heart and if I had to choose, I would. Thankfully I don’t. I am really enjoying the urban life in Vancouver, and I love to travel. CEM: You have overcome personal obstacles including your parent’s divorce at a young age, losing your Mother, and two broken marriages. How have you coped during these isolating life moments? AMD: Sometimes not that well. In hindsight I didn’t do everything perfectly. The greatest loss in life is getting stuck in sadness, and I was talking to a friend who is going through a break-up recently. I told her, “Don’t get stuck looking at the closed door or you’ll miss the open windows.” I have stayed sad for too long at times, and regret

wasting life on things I couldn’t change. Maybe that’s how Olivia makes a difference? CEM: You love the countryside. What inspires you about nature? AMD: I love Mother Nature. I am obsessed with Mother Nature. I have so much fun going for a hike; I love trees and bark, flowers and dewdrops on leaves, the smell of dirt, and the dappled sunlight coming through the trees. My cells are rejuvenated when I go for a walk in the woods, and it’s proven to improve your cortisol levels. CEM: What are some eco initiatives you have adopted in your life? AMD: I put an environmental easement on the ranch I live on so it can never be developed, and I am surrounded by national forest. I am involved in Montana with land preservation, as well as helping to protect the land. I wish I had done more at an earlier age. In Sex, Lies & Videotape, my character was obsessed with the garbage. Garbage really bothers me. There is so much of it and it is really sad. How do we stop it? If everyone stopped drinking bottled water we could make a huge difference. All those bottles are such a waste.

AMD: I have been supporting ovarian cancer for a long time because L’Oreal is devoted to it. The hard part is that we can’t detect it unit it’s at Level 3, and it is really hard to beat. I recently did a trip with Plan International to Peru, which I really enjoyed. You travel around the world and see the extent of poverty and lack of infrastructure such as running water, no toilets and people living on piles of dirt. I had an awakening experience because I had too much and was uncomfortable. I went to church in this impoverished area, and when I came home I couldn’t live in my house anymore. I felt sick but and was super conscious of poverty. I think the world is opening up for me and discovering what part I am going to play. I need to live a life I am proud of. I don’t think you can tell people to do something unless you do it. I am in that process of living a more conscious life, and thinking about what I do and who I am everyday. That’s the trick. Not just saying it, but doing it. I always participate in making where I am a better place, and am happy to give the attention I draw to good causes. I am a little bit of an introvert so celebrity is strange to me, and I try to take all of that energy and put it to positive use. I have all this attention coming at me for the job I have, and I try to use that energy to make things better. CEM: What inspires you? AMD: Kindness is a beautiful way to live life. Being in touch with your ego is really important otherwise you don’t evolve and become the person you are meant to be. Sometimes greatness can be small and the most humble act, sacrificing something for someone else. Greatness comes in little small details and being a good person.

CEM: What change do you want to see in the world? AMD: Climate change is enormous, but clean drinking water is going to be a huge problem. We have to face it. These things aren’t going away and there is scientific proof. There are so many things that can be done, but I know from my experience in this world that money stops a lot of progress. Greed ruins everything. CEM: What’s next for you? AMD: I am here in Vancouver till mid-July working on Cedar Cove, and in negotiation on a film but can’t speak about that yet. Still being a Mom, which keeps me on my toes, and looking forward to my future, and how I am evolving. How I can connect and give back, do positive things and make a difference. That’s what’s next! To the world, Andie is seen as a glittering celebrity, a vision of beauty and talent who has seamlessly conquered the path to stardom. The Ten Island Renewable Challenge is an idea that calls for a scaling up of renewable energy across the region

Sir Richard BRANSON Sir Richard Branson has long shared his exploits with the rest of us. Best known for his self-made legacy with his Virgin Group of 400 companies including Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Mobile, Sir Richard is now turning his sights to transforming his famous Necker Island into a completely sustainable island with a major eco-upgrade. It was here on Necker Island that organizations such as Carbon War Room, The Elders, and the B Team were born out of conversational “think tanks.” And it is here at the Temple on Necker that the Ten Island Renewable Challenge has begun. The Ten Island Renewable Challenge is an idea that calls for a scaling up of renewable energy across the region. Currently seven countries have committed to the “friendly, informal competition for the most progressive island states to see how fast they can scale clean technologies,” clarifies Sir Richard. The countries currently participating are St. Lucia, The British Virgin Isles, Colombia for the Island of Providencia and San Andres, Turks & Caicos, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Aruba. “Having kicked off the conversations and split into five working streams, we divided into a series of working groups and began to form practical action plans for making positive change in the respective areas. Each group contained people with the expertise and insight to actually get things done rather than merely make meaningless presentations,” he explains.

So what does this all mean for Necker Island? The private luxury island is currently powered by 100% diesel power but will switch to a mixture of wind and solar power — 700 kw of solar power derived from 2.5 thousand panels hidden alongside the island’s landscape, and 300 kw wind power which will be spun from three 100 kw wind turbines. “It’s a way of proving to the world that you can flip the island off fossil fuels with fantastic guest experience at the same time,” says Peter Boyd, the Chief Operating Officer of Carbon War Room. With his island, Sir Richard and the Necker Island community hope to set an example for other island communities and the world, and impart his own unique spin on the eco-luxury travel experience. Ron ROBINSON As a young man starting out with Fred Segal, LA’s iconic fashion destination, Ron Robinson quickly saw the value of bringing responsible sustainable fashion to a consumer base hungry for on-trend, covetable items. After nine years of working up the ranks, Ron launched his own brand, Ron Robinson, at the Fred Segal department store to fulfill his belief that, “As a part of a greater society, it is contemporary and fashionable to think about what we do and how that affects everything.” Since then, the self-professed “curator of fashion arts” has selected brands from around the world which stand up to the qualification formula that Ron employs for each and every brand. “I want to bring the elite of fashion to a dynamic, organic environment,” he states. Of course at the top of the list is a lifelong quest to bring aesthetically beautiful, fashionable items to his clientele. Aesthetics are then closely followed by the overall qualities of the brand. Believing that the word organic is thrown around “far too liberally” these days, he explains, “I want to make a real difference,” looking for brands that are “environmentally intelligent” rather than simply “organic.” He furthers, “Many brands are sometimes a little bit light green,” and his selection process includes those who do not use harmful products or production processes, but “might be neutral” as well as those who are truly sustainable. Chris SALGARDO Chris Salgardo, the President of Kiehl’s Since 1851, has not only accomplished his dream of running the global beauty brand but has gone far beyond, partnering with Recycle Across America to implement the company’s in-store recycling policy, as well as RAA’s “Let’s recycle right!” initiative. To date and under Chris’ leadership, the company has successfully donated $200,000 to the initiative as well as collected 1.5 million used Kiehl’s containers. You can say that Chris is passionate about what he strives for. “I’ve been a Kiehl’s shopper for 20 years. I have always been impressed by the brand’s efficacious formulations, unique ingredient sourcing, generosity within the communities it does business in and understated packaging.” These are the reasons why he hoped to one day head the company. True to their mission, Kiehl’s continues to give back to the communities they have presence in, with Chris firmly at the helm. With three chosen causes to focus on, Chris iterates: “In 2009, we decided to focus on three pillar causes to increase our impact on the environment, the fight against HIV/Aids, and the children’s well-being. I’m proud to say that by 2015 we’ll have raised approximately US $500,000 for environmental/ eco-non-profits, $1,025,000 for AmFar and $500 for children’s related organizations,” he explains. STING From its 1989 inception, Sting and Trudie Styler’s mission with The Rainforest Fund has been to protect and support the indigenous and traditional populations, in their efforts to conserve their environments and fulfill their rights. Since then they have expanded from being primarily a working force against deforestation in Brazil where Sting had made a personal commitment to the indigenous leader Roani of the Kayapo tribe to help him gain rights to their traditional land, to the now various multi-year multi-cultural projects they help fund in countries around the globe. Projects in 23 countries include Belize, Cameroon, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.

Courtney & Carter REUM When brothers Courtney and Carter Reum took a surfing trip to Brazil back in 2007, they hadn’t a clue that a little known berry was set to change the course of their lives from successful investment bankers, to passionate entrepreneurs. “When we were in Brazil we tried a smoothie made with acai. This really inspired us and got us to start thinking about what we could do with acai, which was virtually unknown at the time. We wanted to combine something good with something healthful.” With that inspiration the seeds of Veev were planted. We also have donated to organizations that directly benefit the restoration and replantation of the rainforest and support the region’s farming communities.” As for the future, the Reum brothers are hopeful that the spirits industry will begin to shift more and more towards alternative distillery technologies. “The demand for more eco-friendly products spurs innovation in the category of distilling. Solar power is a growing technology that many distilleries are adopting. There has been a lot of growth in alternative technologies outside of the U.S. so it is our hope that we begin to adopt these new more efficient and ecofriendly ways of producing alcohol,” explains Courtney. Neil KOPPEL Neil Koppel is an unsung hero and proof that one man can make an exponential difference. The seasoned jewelry designer leapt into action and took to the skies, to help the devastated Haitian nation after a catastrophic 7.5 magnitude earthquake displaced 1.5 million people in 2010. Personally flying doctors, food, medicine and other necessities in his own aircraft, Neil saw first-hand not only what was needed immediately for the survival of the people, but also what was needed to rebuild and thrive, far beyond the ruins of the past. In his quest to provide a better quality of life for refugees Neil created HabiHut, a self-assembled pre-fabricated “pseudo-house” that is constructed much like “Ikea furniture,” as Neil describes. These structures are purposefully designed for easy delivery and assembly, and provide what many traditional camps don’t — walls, a locked door, solar power and sanitation — all of which had become luxuries in the devastated Haitian world. Weeks after arriving on the ground Neil met actor Sean Penn, Founder of JP/HRO, a Haitian charitable initiative, and the first of these homes was erected at his camp in Petionville. “I started to see the value in it,” remembers Neil. He quickly went to work creating the first “holistic village” of Haiti, convincing a friend to donate 10 acres of land and having 25 homes and necessary generators shipped to start the building process. During this time he realized that within seven months not only was the village thriving and self-sustaining with the growth of crops, but the men were also able to work in the nearby town of Jacmel. “I realized if you give them the opportunity, they will do it,” he explained. During this time,

Neil suffered a back injury, and whilst in hospital his wife Nikki came up with the idea to make handmade bracelets made of chain woven with leather. This would create jobs for Haitian and American workers, while helping provide other relief within the country. “I thought it was fabulous,” recalls Neil. Having originally teamed up with Penn to bring better housing, jobs, and education opportunities to correct the 87% unemployment, and an average pay of $3 per day, Neil decided to continue this partnership. Links donates 10% of all profits to JP/HRO. His belief and commitment to the Haitian cause extends beyond his own ventures. He points out that Haiti is only “700 miles away from the coast of Florida.” “If we build factories in Haiti it would offset the cost of shipping from some other areas of the world,” he states, thereby reducing the global carbon footprint. Opportunity is what he hopes to provide through job creation, which can promise twice the pay of other such jobs to “motivate people. “They need the chance to better their quality of life and if you provide a safe environment to grow, the next generation can do better than this one.” LinksJewelry.com

Laura TURNER SEYDEL Captain Planet was more than a cute, fun cartoon that graced the screens of homes in the 1990s. With his green mullet, vibrant blue skin, soil brown eyes, a fire-red chest, he spread the word on the consequences of climate change for children and adults alike. Laura Turner Seydel, chairperson of Captain Planet Foundation, philanthropist and inspiration to many, has made it her life’s passion to get the message out about the reality of our planet’s toils. “As with most things in life, an ethic is installed in people from a young age. My grandparents were true eco superheroes and my dad (Ted Tuner, media mogul and philanthropist) took over as the real, live Captain Planet,” Laura recollected. “They were the ones who engrained in me and my siblings the culture of conservation.” Captain Planet Foundation’s mission is to give the next generation of stewards an active understanding and love for the natural world in which they live. They fund and support hands-on environmental projects that inspire and empower children and youth. The Foundation has funded over 1,700 projects impacting more than 1 million kids around the globe.

Laura has found that one of her biggest obstacles has been getting the message out about climate change. “The warmest year on record was 2013. Ninety-nine out of 100 scientists agree that man is causing the problem. It is happening now, and we have to act to mitigate the damage,” Laura shared. “We must do everything we can as quickly as we can, both as individuals and collectively. Leila JANAH Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits.” In 2008, Leila Janah, founder of Samasource, the award winning non-profit began a massive effort to address this seemingly impossible notion, with the goal of turning it into a reality. Leila had spent over a decade living and working in Africa as a teacher and interpreter, and had become cynical of the anti-poverty movement and the world’s negative view of the poor as needy, passive consumers of handouts. “Despite all the technological and material progress we have made since Dr. King left us,” she noted, “we still live in a world where over 4 billion people live on less than $3 a day.” She couldn’t and wouldn’t believe that this was all we could do. With a large goal in mind, she successfully gained the support of dozens of individuals and philanthropic organizations, and began the task of attempting to connect people in the poorest corners of the world with jobs, which provide reasonable, and most importantly, progressive wages. With this Samasource was born and also the

concept of Microwork, which breaks large-scale digital projects into smaller tasks for workers to complete via the Internet. Today, Samasource headquarters are in San Francisco, California and maintains a field office in Nairobi, Kenya. The organization currently has 10 delivery partners across Haiti, India, Kenya, and Uganda, and previously partnered with workers in Pakistan, Ghana, and South Africa. Melinda MACINNIS The rhino is a majestic, iconic mammal that has wandered this planet in one form or another for over 50 million years. Most species of rhino, up until recently, have been listed as critically endangered, but over the course of a few years their numbers have taken a turn for the worst. The Western Black Rhino is gone, wiped from existence and the other species are sadly not far behind. Melinda MacInnis is a warrior, fighting to spread the word about Africa and Asia’s most endangered animals. After befriending one of the oldest conservation families in southern Africa, she decided enough is enough and turned to filmmaking as a method of spreading the word on this tragic loss of life. “I decided I couldn’t sit on the sidelines any more,” said Melinda. “More and more people are turning to documentaries to obtain vital information about the state of the planet and things that aren’t being covered properly in regular media.” With this goal in mind, she has been working on the production of her latest and greatest project called The Price. The Price is a documentary that takes a look at the rhino as a gatekeeper to our planet’s delicate ecological balance and potential precursor to an even greater crisis, a Sixth Mass Extinction event. “A lot of this stuff is quite dark,” confided Melinda, “so as we head into post production, our largest task is working to turn the natural outrage that most people feel when they learn about what’s going on, into something inspirational.” Currently in post-production, The Price will be ready for release in early 2015. Melinda MacInnis feels that every person on this planet has a role to play in improving the deeply intertwined relationship between humans, animals and our environment. “It doesn’t take a whole generation to evolve our attitudes and actions,” she urges, “we can start an ‘evolution’ revolution right now.” thepricedocumentary.com

Michelle “Mitch” HEDLUND We can only make the necessary changes in the world with new, fresh ideas that keep us moving forward as a society. Michelle “Mitch” Hedlund, Founder and Executive Director of Recycle Across America, found that despite all of the attention being given to the green industry over the past decade, she was shocked to learn that recycling, the most largely recognized green action in the United States, hadn’t really improved in over 15 years. “U.S. recycling levels continue to hover around 34%,” she noted, “and unfortunately much of the materials that are recycled, are so highly contaminated with trash that most manufacturers aren’t able to reuse them.” She created Recycle Across America and a society-wide standardized labeling system for recycling bins. “This remarkably simple solution is already proving to have a profound impact on our environment,” said Mitch, “and now we have launched the national ‘let’s recycle right!’ celebrity campaign, which is bringing awareness to the critical need to recycle right.” Is it simply a matter of everyone recycling more? Yes and no. Mitch Hedlund feels that with every problem there’s a force that is profiting from the problem and that this is especially true with the largest waste hauling companies in the U.S. “Currently the amount of trash found in recycling bins (as a result of the public’s confusion), prevents recycling from being a reliable profit center for these large companies” shared Mitch. “The money that they make from owning the landfills and collecting fees from all of the smaller trash haulers...is very reliable and profitable.” Fortunately for the future, these large haulers are also positioned to make significant profits on recycling if it does become a more effective, profitable, and reliable industry — which will happen when society begins to recycle right. It is my first morning in Koh Samui and I am reflecting over a coffee, looking across the majestic Gulf of Thailand. To say I am already entranced would be an understatement, and then Pom, one of lovely and professional staff at the Akaryn Samui offers, “would you like your hot water with a piece of fresh lime?” And so begins my own Thailand story, the most peaceful holiday I have ever experienced. Thailand enticed me as a destination because of its bohemian soul and majestic beauty. Friends and family alike have come home with exotic tales from a crazy party, a luxurious retreat, a body build intensive (yes it does happen), which all sounded too alluring to ignore.

Koh Samui is an island 35km northeast of Surat Thani and surrounded by 60 other islands it makes up the Ang Thong Marine National Park. The first destination on this incredible adventure was the Akaryn Resort and Spa. The Akaryn, is a brother and sister’s dream seaside retreat surrounded by pristine beaches — a place where life is unhurried. As soon as you walk into the open reception and look across the spacious view, it’s obvious that this resort understands luxury. This five star resort is located on the beautiful and secluded Hanuman Bay, facing southeast for exceptional sunlight exposure. The name of the resort means the unseen and untouched ray of light.

I stayed in the pool suites at the resort, which is an open-plan, stand alone building, surrounded by trees and wildlife. There are also Pool Villas, which include an 8m pool and an open bath, for those inclined for a little additional luxury. Each of the villas is private; mine was complete with a view of the ocean from the balcony. There are four superb restaurants to choose from and the open pools, as the photos suggest, are a glorious place to retreat to. On my first night I experienced Ochos Restaurant and had the best chateaubriand of my life. I highly recommend the body scrub at Ayurah Spa, which will leave you feeling like you are floating. The Thai cooking class was one my

fondest memories of the trip, especially considering I am not a keen chef. There are also daily yoga and pilates sessions, snorkeling around Hanuman Bay and fishing off the rocks. For a completely different experience, no less extraordinary, try the Akyra — located on the trendy and bustling Chaweng Beach. The Akyra features beautifully appointed rooms and a charming pool bar. Here patrons can lie by the beach, offered table service from the helpful, and sometimes cheeky, staff.

One of its key projects has been to raise awareness and funds for Thailand’s endangered turtles. Akyra is a sister hotel to the Akaryn. Each morning a beautiful buffet breakfast is served at the resort restaurant. The ceremonial reserving of a large day bed, on the beach should be done before breakfast. After a nourishing breakfast, it is a leisurely stroll down to the beachfront for reading and fresh coconut juice. I fell asleep on the daybeds twice, complete bliss. You have a choice of room or suite at the Akyra, both comfortable and chic. The resort includes the Ayurah Salon and Massage by the beach, along with yoga and meditation rooms for those ‘in the zone’. My favourite night at Akyra was with the DJ on the beach at the pool bar. It was completely surreal with the music playing, cocktail in hand and watching people light lanterns that littered the sky with a beautiful array of orange light.

As I stood listening to the sound of the water rapids hitting the surface, I glimpsed a group of elephants taking in the same sight and thought it was truly beautiful. There is so much to recommend about the lovely Calliote Canyon, a private eco-retreat nestled in Southern California’s Ojai Valley. With its rustic beauty, its aura of tranquility, and its cascade of amenities and comforts, I am always over the moon when I am lucky enough to arrange a stay. Located just an hour and a half from Los Angeles, it is also just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the city’s urban chaos. On my most recent visit to the five-acre property, several friends and I left Venice Beach early enough on a Friday afternoon to miss the dreaded L.A. traffic. We decided to treat ourselves and take the Pacific Coast Highway route towards Malibu’s Las Virgenes Canyon, enjoying the spectacular ocean views and craggy canyon vistas before turning onto California’s historic 101. With our moods already lifted, we sailed along what was once known as El Camino Real, or the Royal Road, the pathway the Spanish Jesuits used back in the 1700s as they traveled from mission to mission. (Who says SoCal doesn’t have any history?) But, of course, the real pleasure comes in reaching the outskirts of Ventura County and turning off the main drag into Ojai Valley. Situated in a rare, perfectly east-west facing valley, the town of Ojai is home to a magical phenomenon known as “the pink moment”, when the setting sun casts a radiant glow onto the Topatopa Bluffs which rise 6,000 feet to form the valley’s eastern wall. On this recent

trip we were too early for the celebrated light show, and besides our destination was not the gentle hustle and bustle of Ojai proper. Our goal was to leave city life behind altogether, so we skirted the town and headed north towards the Los Padres National Forest. Because Calliote Canyon is so artfully tucked away off the Maricopa Highway, you have got to be careful not to miss it once you leave the beaten path. (It is easy to get distracted by the sweet, crisp canyon air provided by the endless oaks and wild sage that line the way.) Having just left civilization behind, there you are at Calliote’s private gate: a world away. The inverted double C logo that greets you — known to discerning women the world over — is a nod to Calliote’s owner, the popular Los Angeles-based shoe designer, Calleen Cordero. Having obtained something of a cult following for her luxurious handmade shoes and accessories, Cordero has infused Calliote Canyon with a similar

As we sat around the fire pit one night, I looked out at the moon-dappled landscape and was reminded of the Chumash tribe’s name for Ojai — A’hwai, meaning Valley of the Moon. aesthetic, blending down to earth beauty with a sumptuous core. As with her fashion line, almost everything you see at Calliote is handcrafted using natural, locally-sourced materials and designed for comfort. Eco-minded, Cordero has maintained all the property’s original structures, simply widening and improving upon them, making them both more welcoming and yet more intimate. As you approach the main house, its wrap-around screened porch beckons, and you are faced with your first dilemma. Should you park yourself here with a book and a cup of tea and never get up? It is a good option. It is just that there is so much else to do. Inside, the open kitchen and dining room serve as a heart center, and it is here that my friends and I always immediately unload our overflowing baskets of food and wine. You can arrange to have a private chef come during your stay or always head back into Ojai to eat. But most people (myself included) just want to stay put once they’ve arrived to soak up the complete and utter privacy the property affords. With its 360 degree uninterrupted views of the natural world, it is the type of thing that is getting harder and harder to come by. Containing something for everyone, Calliote sleeps up to 22 comfortably and can facilitate all kinds of retreats: business, yoga, meditation, and features a beautiful outside amphitheater that Cordero built with all of these in mind. It is perfect for family

get-togethers too, and with two separate master suites, as well as two private cottages, no one has to fight over rooms because they are all charming and ridiculously romantic. Add to this an authentic Swedish sauna, creekside jacuzzi, and natural waterfall fed by underground springs during the wet season, and it is not long before you realize you have stumbled onto a bit of paradise. THE JUICE CLEANSE

Everywhere you go nowadays, pressed juice bars are springing up in cities across the world, presented as a new lifestyle choice that’s as easy as grabbing a caffeine fix, yet promises endless health benefits. A way to do a quick internal cleanse and rid your body of daily accumulated toxins, juicing promises to heal a variety of woes including physical and mental sluggishness and shedding a few pounds, propelling us forward to clarity, energy, and an overall reset of our busy lives. I was more than a little skeptical of juice cleanses. Opting to drink dubious tasting liquids in lieu of food for five days doesn’t appeal to me, despite claims of how renewing it is for mind, body, and spirit. I am, however, the perfect candidate for this. On the dayto- day my energy levels can only be compared to that of a sloth,

no doubt due to my propensity to drink coffee, indulge in sugary delights and a glass of wine to end the evening. I knew it was time to do an internal spring clean and decided I would give juicing a try. At the very least it would test my will power, and any positive side effect would be a bonus.

I opted for the 5-day Nekter Juice Bar Advanced Cleanse that retails for $300. Nekter, based out of Southern California, specializes in two types of cleanses; the Classic and the Advanced, both from one to five days, and each designed to flood your body with a month’s worth of vitamins in a single day. The results from a daily dose of 10-15 pounds of vegetables and nutrients are supposed to leave you feeling more energized and your body free of toxins. Being a juice cleanse virgin I feared five days may be overly ambitious, but I was feeling determined. People had told me that after day three all feelings of starvation subside and some kind of health-induced enlightenment prevails. I was up for the challenge. There are six juices to drink throughout the day. My first was at Juice #1 at 9 am, an elixir of apple, grapefruit, celery, kale, parsley, spinach, mustard greens, and surprisingly pleasant tasting with the dominant flavors being apple and grapefruit. Only three hours in and my desire for solid food set in. It was about 11 am and I was starting to second guess this whole juice cleanse idea. Instead of caving in so soon and having to explain to my friends that I didn’t make it past morning, I opted to drink Juice #2, a lemonade concoction made with filtered water, lemon, turmeric, cayenne pepper, and agave. The day seemed to drag on without the sweet and enjoyment of food, and by 1 pm I was ready for Juice #3. Packed with carrots, celery, kale, parsley, spinach, and ginger and with quite a pleasant flavor, it gave me the energy boost I desperately needed. By 4 pm, it was time for Juice #4. Apple, grapefruit, celery, kale, parsley, spinach, and mustard greens, just enough to keep me on track. Next up, Juice #5, a green juice of celery, lemon, apple, kale, parsley, and dandelion greens. This was my least favorite, not overly unpleasant in flavor but had a more distinct,

bitter taste. Still not enough to throw me off track, I persevered until my final juice of the day, #6. Drinking “dinner” was by far the most satisfying; a delicious and comforting blend of nut milk, cashews, water, dates, cinnamon, and nutmeg. It was the most substantial drink in terms of thickness and flavor, and just what my body needed so I could sleep without pangs of hunger. The second day was my most challenging, and I was so desperate for real food, it was all I could think about. In a moment of weakness I ate half an avocado at lunchtime to subside the hunger. I could literally feel the toxins leaving my body and felt lethargic from the purge. Still I carried on in search of the Holy Grail — that moment of juicing enlightenment when my body, mind and spirit would turn the corner, and I would start to feel the benefit of cleansing. By day three I was starting to feel much better; clear minded, less bloated, and my skin was glowing. As the last two days went on it got easier, and I started to gain more energy and not fixate on food so much. My concentration was higher and I felt like I was mentally operating at an optimum level. Cadillac’s entry into the hybrid automobile sector commences with the 2014 Cadillac ELR. This luxury plug-in hybrid coupe debuted as a concept car in 2009 and is now introduced as a 2014 production automobile. With a price tag starting at $75,000, a lucky ELR owner can expect the quality and comfort expected by a Cadillac, along with Detroit’s latest and greatest technology. The ELR includes two power systems. First, there is a 1.4 liter internal combustion, gasoline-powered four cylinder motor, featuring a generator that produces electricity to charge the drive system. The electric drive system consists of a 16.5-kWh lithium-ion propulsion battery located along the spine of the vehicle. Lithium batteries have significant energy storage and power capacity benefits, compared to similar weight nickel metal hydride batteries found in other vehicles. The result is an electronic powered system that provides immediate response with instant torque. As many electric car owners have learned, the electronic power provides swift and smooth pick-up, with no need to wait for gas-powered motors to reach optimal rpms levels to achieve maximum output. Electric motors have instant power which results in a pleasurable driving experience. Cadillac boasts a total vehicle range of 340 miles including battery and gas. Fuel tank capacity is 9.3 gallons. Battery range is listed at 37 miles, with an electric equivalent of 82 MPG and Extended Range 110

(gas generated power) of 33 MPG. The ELR recharges in about 12 hours with a 120-volt outlet and 4.5 hours with a 240-volt outlet. The gas powered motor kicks in seamlessly once the electric power is exhausted. Best of all, unlike the Tesla, which is fully electric, the ELR can be filled with gas for a long cross- country journey, without having to stop to recharge the battery. Cadillac claims the ELR is “the perfect balance of Art & Science,” and the car has won numerous awards including one of the five finalists in the 2012 Green Car Vision Awards and 2013 “Best Production Vehicle” in the Eyes on Design Awards. The bold new styling embodies a striking exterior with many impressive design features such as hidden door handles, dramatic LED headlamps, and jeweled “hockey stick” tail lamps. The interior provides the ambiance of luxury expected from a Cadillac. From the cut-and-sewn heated seats to the mood-setting ambient light, this car is inviting. An interesting feature that took some getting used to is the Safety Alert Seat that sends vibrating pulses through the driver’s seat to warn of potential hazards, including the direction they are coming from. Instrumentation is clean, modern, and efficient. The center console “Infotainment System” provides features such as navigation, audio and temperature controls, to name just a few. The drive-selectable instrument panel has multiple display modes to choose, and identifies both the electric and gas powered usage, fuel range, as well as other vital information.

This car is a Cadillac. In other words, this interior is comfortable and the ride is smooth. Front seats are ample, with a comfortable snug fit in each bucket seat separated by a large interior center console, and whilst getting into the back seat of this two-door can be challenging, the ELR comfortably seats four.

Start-up the ELR and the sound effects might lead one to believe they are in a futuristic ride. The ELR provided a comfortable, smooth ride around the streets of LA. Power, braking and handling were more than adequate for city and highway driving. The front wheel drive provides ample grip for delivery of this power to the road. Zero-60 mph acceleration is listed at 7.8 seconds. Top speed is stated as 106 mph. While only 83 horsepower is provided at 4800 rpms from the internal combustion engine, an impressive 295 lb. ft. torque is generated.

Driving the ELR around Beverly Hills was quite an experience. The car has style, comfort, and ample power for city driving. A hybrid car provides a sense of progressive, forward-thinking direction in pursuing a “Green” choice when it comes to automobiles. The automobile industry is in its early stage of moving to electric cars, and the Cadillac ELR is one of many new vehicles that are taking on this challenge. Congratulations to GM for its foresight on this project and development of ELR. Style. Technology. Comfort.

The price of luxury is not cheap. MSRP starts at $75,000 and can climb to $82,000. This price range puts the ELR in a class with very strong competition, but the federal tax credit of $7,500 helps somewhat, and time will tell if Cadillac’s ELR will be successful against a host of strong competitors in the same price range.

Our planet is actually blue. Yep, 70% of Earth is covered by water. And we know more about the surface of our moon than we know about the bottom of the ocean. That always shocks me. I have loved the ocean my whole life. My fondest childhood memories from growing up in North Carolina are playing in her waves, building castles on her sand and discovering the creatures that lived on the shoreline. But it wasn’t until I met my future husband that I took my first deep dive into her blue abyss and truly saw the depth of her beauty. There just a few feet down under the waves was another planet, full of fish and coral and animals so odd looking, even a science-fiction writer could not have dreamt them up. It was like a whole other world under the sea, but it wasn’t. It was the place I grew up, the place I lived and loved, just from a totally different perspective. That was my “Aha” moment. There, 50 feet below the shoreline on Bonaire, I feel in love with this mysterious place I had never seen and,

I am humbled to say, I really didn’t understand. It was so magical that at the age of 30, I felt like a child again in this strange setting. There floating I watched a single shrimp take on its daily activities with the zest of a child. My love of diving and exploring has not slowed down. I dove with Great White Sharks off the coast of Mexico. I explored Bermuda’s changing ocean ecosystem and have been out in open water with 10 foot swells in a tiny boat to listen to the songs of migrating humpback whales. While I grew up loving nature and animals, as I have embarked on this journey over the last few years I have learned that protecting nature is about more than donating to a cause or recycling plastic bottles. While those things are important, the truth is that all our choices have consequences. From the food we eat, to the cars we drive, to the clothes and products we buy, our choices have a

huge influence not only on the health of the oceans and planet but on the health of our communities, our economy and our bodies. In my life I try to take small changes every day. I used to live on fatfree hotdogs, diet sodas and low-calorie everything. Slowly, I started deleting artificial sweeteners, processed foods and cutting down my meat consumption and now only eating meat a few times a month. These days I am proud to say almost all the food I buy is fresh, locally grown and organic. I noticed not only that my weight stopped fluctuating, but my skin and hair are healthier and I have more energy too. This all speaks to a universal truth. Our bodies, and to a large degree our health, are a product of what we put into them. So, I started to clean out my cosmetics drawer, buying organic and natural products that don’t use harsh and often times toxic chemicals. I have also reevaluated my long-standing passion for cars and leased an electric one. It is still fast and sexy but means that I can choose to charge with solar or wind as opposed to being only stuck with oil. Other choices like where I go on vacation, the cleaning products I use in my house, composting my kitchen scraps, all of them are ways I have realized I can make a positive difference in the world.

I n my life I try to take small changes every day. Just as important as all the physical actions I take for sustainability, my mindset has changed too. While there is a lot of bad news about the state of our environment I choose to find hope. I find hope in the amount of companies filing sustainability reports about water and energy, retailers that are selling products that are eco-friendly like Seventh Generation, DeVita Cosmetics and Maiyet. Governments are coming together and listening to their constituents to evoke

major change all over the world. Recently, Hong Kong finally announced they will be destroying 30 tons of confiscated ivory, a major victory for the fight against the illegal wildlife trade, and the city of Chicago voted to ban plastic bags, another big step to remove plastic from our oceans and landfills. But perhaps the most hopeful sign of all is the look of determination and passion I see on the faces of children I speak to about conservation around the world. From Hong Kong to Los Angeles, young people are fired up about our planet and are taking an active role in making positive change. They, our youth, are the true game changers to our world’s issues. My grandfather in law, Jacques Cousteau once said, ‘Every child born on earth has the right to breath fresh air, drink clean water and walk on green grass under a blue sky.’ I believe that such a world is achievable if we all join together and fight for it. ashlancousteau.com

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the United States population was estimated at 317 million people in 2014, making America the third most populous country on the planet after China and India. With the world population rapidly increasing, so does our consumption of natural resources and an increase in our waste materials. The conversation of recycling has never been more relevant, and yet as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) statistics indicate, U.S. recycling levels are less than 35% and have barely improved in the past 15 years. The reason for this is a combination of a deficiency in societal awareness and confusing labeling on products and recycling bins. Millions of tons of trash are thrown in recycling bins every year driving up the cost of processing the materials, thus hindering manufacturers ability to reuse the materials, and disrupting the entire system of recycling. Recycle Across America (RAA) is a non-profit organization that is revolutionizing the way Americans recycle by developing the first ever society-wide standardized labeling system for recycling bins. The effort helps eliminate the public confusion surrounding recycling and expedites the process for an already time poor public. The advancement could not have come soon enough as according to the U.S. EPA, recycling is one of most effective and important ways in which we can improve the environment. The issue is broad in scope and in turn must be the solution, as the productivity of a collective effort serves not only our planet but also the economics of its people. The re-use of materials can help conserve water, reduce energy usage, reduce CO2 levels, protect finite natural resources, as well as oceans, sea life, wildlife, and creates millions of jobs.

In 2009, at the Recycling Association of Minnesota Conference, Michelle “Mitch” Hedlund pitched the idea of creating standardized labels on recycling bins. Standardized labels would do away with the confusing array of signage used across the country and signal to consumers where to put their recyclables, while producing cleaner and more consistent recycling for processors. The idea was so well received, that a committee composed of about 40 organizations including industry groups, school associations, retailers and others, was formed to evaluate the standardized label designs and with Hedlund at the helm as Executive Director, Recycle Across America (RAA), was formed. Hedlund explains, “With worldwide waste expected to double by 2025 and since the U.S. is the largest producer of waste in the world, it is imperative that we address this issue today. We need to remember it’s not just waste that’s doubling, it’s all of the resources used and all the CO2 generated to create the packaging and materials that will also double.” For the true benefits of recycling to have any real impact, we must recycle the right way. Eliminating contamination at the source will ultimately decrease cost of the recycling process, and result in more usable materials available to manufacturers for the creation of new products.

RAA hopes to shift people’s attitudes towards recycling, and view it more as a valuable resource that enables the continuum of society’s ecosystem, versus a necessary bi-product that must be disposed of in landfills. Currently, two-thirds of the nation’s waste goes into landfills and 85 percent of all the jobs associated with waste come from recycling and reuse activities, proving that the issue is not limited to the environment, it is fiscal, and even political. When recycling right becomes easier, it equates to cleaner materials, a refined sorting process for haulers and less waste disposal for producers, all of which bring costs down. Recycling is great for a struggling economy because

it generates more jobs and economic value than landfills. Cleaner materials mean that the U.S would be more likely to use the recycled materials instead of sending the contaminated recyclables to China, limiting our dependence on them. Since launching the labeling initiative in 2011, RAA has received unsolicited and overwhelming backing from corporations, brands and celebrities, helping to further the impact. Hollywood stars such as Angie Harmon, Stana Katic, Gabby Reece and Kristen Bell are a few of the celebrities who participate in the ‘Let’s recycle right!’ campaign

Hedlund explains, “Consumer packaging brands actually have the most to gain from this solution because they are the ones most challenged. When we’re explaining the importance of recycling right to the public, we also need to help communicate the manufacturers’ story — that many companies are between a

rock and a hard place.” She continues, “Brand packaging companies receive a tremendous amount of pressure from shareholders, consumers, NGOs, environmentalists, government agencies and even employees to use recycled materials in their manufacturing, but the recycled materials are not always a reliable source and are often too costly to choose due to the expense of trying to remove all the contamination.” Incorporating recycling into an everyday routine has now been made easier than ever before. “After we’ve enjoyed drinking, eating and using these products, the next moment is critical.
