LETTER TO YOU The Blue ISSUE

On April 20th, what will go down in history as the worst environmental crisis of our time occurred when the BP Deepwater Horizon explosion happened, killing 11 workers and sending a cascading torrent of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. As I write this, oil continues to gush into our ocean at an estimated rate of 35,000-60,000 barrels per day, and over 81 days later, there is still uncertainty about how to cap the well and cease the flow. We have no idea yet of the full impact to our oceans and marine habitats, but we can safely estimate that it will severely impact not only our lifetime, but also future generations to come. We had already scheduled this to be our Blue Issue prior to the BP oil spill, but little did we know what was to happen, and the subsequent direction of our cover story. Whilst it would be any Editors’ dream to have an exclusive with a talent such as Jason Mraz, I truly wish it could have been under different circumstances. However, it is through this tragedy that we are witnessing people’s extraordinary commitment to our planet, and none more so than Jason who shares with us details of his recent trip to New Orleans in our exclusive interview, with stunning photography courtesy of Jen Rosenstein.

The water topic is a big one, and I have personally learned how deep and detailed it is through the making of this issue. As humans, our bodies are made up of 60% water. It covers 70.9% of the Earth’s surface, and it has been estimated that by 2025, more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability, whilst the largest landfill in the world known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, lies in the middle of our ocean. I am extremely proud of our latest issue, and deeply grateful to the phenomenal talent that has stepped in to be a part of it, led by Starre Vartan who graciously directed as Guest Editor. With beautiful pictorial from our amazing Fashion and Beauty teams, it is also full of substantial editorial content on all of the many conversations around H20, written by some of the best journalists in our community. Enjoy! We hope you are inspired. Kindest regards,

Anna Griffin Editor In Chief, Coco Eco Magazine
