GPCA NEWS
Innovation to drive plastics growth GPCA continues on its journey of innovation with PlastiCon 2014 in April, following hard on the heels of its recent Research and Innovation Summit in March
I
nnovation in the plastics industry is the focus of PlastiCon 2014, GPCA’s fifth international conference on plastic conversion. This year the conference is being held on 7-9 April at the Expo Centre, Sharjah, in conjunction with PlastiVision ARABIA. The PlastiCon focuses on how innovation can lead to global and regional growth for the plastics conversion industry. Panel sessions at the conference will see senior executives from SABIC, Borouge and Sadara Chemical Company sharing their expertise with delegates. Looking forward, industry experts are predicting that Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) plastics producers will be at the forefront of innovation within the petrochemical industry. Plastics, also known as polymers, account for nearly a fifth of the GCC’s p etrochemicals portfolio. According to GPCA estimates, the
region’s polymer capacity sits at 23.8m tonnes/year, or 18.4% of the Gulf’s 129.2m tonne/year petrochemical production. “Continuous innovation is driving the rapid growth of the plastics industry,” said Dr Alfred Stern, executive vice president of polyolefins at Austrian polymer producer Borealis, during his address at the GPCA Research and Innovation Summit in March. He added: “Plastics give the opportunity to contribute [to solving] the main challenges: climate change, waste and recycling, food, health, energy and water.” The 2014 PlastiCon conference programme will address a number of topics related to global and regional market d evelopments for plastic products, innovations and new applications, as well as many case studies from international companies sharing their experiences in new markets with new products.
Innovation rewarded at PlastiCon 2014 Reinforcing innovation as the theme of the conference, PlastiCon 2014 will also feature the fourth GPCA Plastics Excellence Awards, sponsored by SABIC. This year, the awards consist of seven categories with more focus on talent, environment and product/process innovation. The categories are: ■ Talent in Plastics: Best Student ■ Talent in Plastics: Best Researcher ■ Excellence in Plastic Products ■ Excellence in Plastic Processes ■ Best Recycling or Energy Saving Program
■ Best Masterbatch, Additive and
Supporting Companies to Converters, and ■ Joint Development of a Product or/and a
Process from a Resin Producer together with a Plastic Converter. Winners will be chosen by a jury comprising the heads of plastic innovation centres in the region and independent consultants from the plastics conversion industry. The results will be announced on 8 April at the PlastiCon event. For more information, please visit http:// gpcaplastics.com/2014

ore than 500 tonnes of waste were collected from nine locations across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region during the GPCA’s latest Waste Free Environment (WFE) day. The WFE campaign was founded by the GPCA’s Plastics Committee two years ago; this year’s event signalled growth in both collection and participation. The inaugural event, held in 2013, saw the participation of over 2,500 volunteers who collected 10 tonnes of waste across six cities in the region. This year, an estimated 5,512 participants from GPCA member companies, schools and local communities in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Manama, Sohar, Mesaieed, Jubail, Riyadh, Jeddah and Kuwait City, collected litter from beaches and the sea as part of the one-day campaign on 20 February. Volunteers for the campaign included students from 71 schools and universities in the region. “A sustainable future can only arise if governments, businesses and communities come

together to find solutions to the pressing problems that we face today,” said AbdulAziz AlHajri, chairman of the GPCA Plastics Committee. “This multi-stakeholder collaboration on campaigns such as WFE is a crucial step in realising this future.” The WFE campaign highlights the fact that plastics litter in the Gulf’s marine and desert environments is largely due to irresponsible disposal of plastics waste combined with poor waste management, a lack of regulatory framework and insufficient recycling infrastructure. “At its core, WFE is a campaign that revolves around education. Litter is fast becoming a pressing environmental issue that can only be solved if people are engaged in the 4 Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover,” said Dr Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, secretary general of GPCA. As an example of these 4Rs, the campaign did not only collect waste; a local recycling partner was engaged at several locations to perform segregation of the recovered waste and recycle it. The post-event recycling reports show that in the UAE, 49% of the waste was plastics and all went for recycling. In Saudi Arabia, the report shows that about 68% of the waste was recyclable plastics. The WFE initiative is aimed at changing the complacent attitudes towards waste disposal that are tarnishing the image of plastic products. Plastics are a major part of the r egion’s economy and are both economi-

cally valuable and sustainable. As a signatory to the global Declaration for Solutions on Marine Litter, the GPCA actively collaborates with governments, non-governmental organisations and the general public on sustainable waste management solutions. WFE is a key component of GPCA’s contribution to this declaration. ■ April 2014 | GULF PLASTICS | 3

Plastics conversion sees rapid growth In a recent presentation at ANTEC 2014 in Dubai, GPCA’s director general set out the rapid growth of the Gulf plastics processing sector
P
lastics conversion in the GCC region is developing strongly as governments and polymer producers promote investment in domestic capacity, to add value to polymers produced in the region and to create employment. Growing regional population and infrastructure development is also driving growth in the sector. The latest figures from GPCA show that conversion capacity has risen to around 4.6m tonnes/year, spread across approximately 1,100 converters and all major polymer types. Conversion capacity has been increasing at nearly 9% per year since 2008, when it stood at just 3.1m tonnes/year. In a recent presentation at the ANTEC 2014 meeting in Dubai, GPCA director general Dr Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun noted, however, that many smaller players are chasing the same markets and that few converters actively pursue exports. Only 15% of plastic goods produced are exported, he noted. This means that there is strong internal competition in the GCC converter sector, with capacity utilisation rates put at only 70%. Main areas of activity are film and bags for packaging and pipes and insulation for the construction industry. Over 80% of capacity is located in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Only the 35 or so largest companies are really active in the export markets, he added. But these account for 70% of GCC capacity. He identified another 140 companies of medium size, and a long tail of 900 or so con-

verters, primarily family owned and largely producing basic household or low-end packaging for the local market, using cheap resin or recycled materials. Although the plastics conversion sector has shown growth, the rate has been lower than that for polymer production in the GCC, which has advanced by 12%/year since 2007. This has led to the proportion of output being consumed locally declining slightly, pointed out Dr Sadoun. In the biggest market of Saudi Arabia, domestic share of polymer use has dropped from 22% to 17% between 2008 and 2013. Domestic share in UAE, Kuwait and Oman currently stands at 37-41%. Looking ahead, Dr Sadoun said that growth in conversion capacities should average 7.2%/year from 2013 to 2020, adding close to 3m tonnes/year of capacity to take the total to 7.5m tonne/year. “Several initiatives are in place to further grow the regional plastics conversion industry,” said Dr Sadoun. These include development of plastics parks, vocational institutes for training and innovation centres for developing plastics applications. “Future local availability of engineering plastics and thermoplastic elastomers will also broaden investment opportunities for local and international converters,” he noted. New additions to the GCC production slate will include nylon, polyacetal, PMMA and a number of elastomers such as SBR, butyl rubber and EPDM. ■
Xxxxxconference xxxxxx major “Safety of Plastics: Let’s talk about it”. The event took place in November last year in Brussels, Belgium, and addressed several topical issues related to concerns on the safety of plastics, the role of science in policy making, the application of risk regulation in Europe, and the challenge for the industry to communicate risks. Karl-H Foerster, executive director of PlasticsEurope, underlined the importance of constructive dialogues between different stakeholders. “Providing a platform for different points of view was exactly what we were trying to achieve. The diversity was reflected in the controversial, but constructive discussions. We recognise the value of speaking with different stakeholders and collaborating with them to shape solutions to the best interest of society,” he said. The report highlights the need for a greater transparency from the industry in order to build trust, openness and consensus between the different stakeholders. It also focuses on reconciling risk regulation, while ensuring a competitive and innovative industry for Europe. The conference provided a platform for different viewpoints, bringing together nearly 200 participants, among them high-level representatives from NGOs, EU institutions, the industry, science and academia. ■ Videos of the presentations can be viewed at www.plasticseurope.org/safety-ofplastics.aspx
SABIC progresses MMA proposal

New cable insulation facility comes on stream at Sipchem S
audi International Petrochemical Co (Sipchem) started test runs at the beginning of March at its new cable insulation polymers plant located in Jubail. “Such specialised products are considered part of the company’s strategy to execute comprehensive transformation projects in addition to the existing products of the company,” Sipchem said. The Saudi riyal (SR) 230m ($61m) plant is part of the company’s third phase of develop-
ment to help meet demand in Saudi Arabia and in the Middle East region, while fulfilling international demand, Sipchem added. Raw materials – low density polyethylene (LDPE) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) – will be supplied by Sipchem affiliate International Polymers Company (IPC). Gulf Advanced Cables Insulation Co, a joint project of Sipchem and South Korea’s Hanwha Chemicals, will market the plant’s output in the Middle East and Europe. ■
man’s OCTAL, one of the world’s leading integrated PET sheet manufacturers, is making its first investment in the US, with a film plant planned for construction in West Chester, near Cincinnati, Ohio. The facility will focus on converting post-industrial PET flake and resin into reusable rPET sheet, allowing OCTAL to meet the growing demand for rPET in the agricultural packaging sector. OCTAL was formed in 2006 and has emerged as the world’s largest PET sheet producer and the largest PET resin producer in the Middle East. Recent expansion has tripled PET resin production from 350,000 to 1m tonnes/year, as the company’s patented DPET direct-to-sheet process continues to find increasing use in the packaging industry. Developed and introduced to the market in 2008, OCTAL’s DPET technology eliminates five energy-intensive stages of the conventional sheet production process (pelletiser, SSP, compactor, dryer and extruder). OCTAL’s products are used to package fresh food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, electrical goods and other consumer goods. ■
SABIC opens plastics centre SABIC’s new Plastics Application Development Center in Riyadh will help drive innovation in the plastics conversion industry
S
ABIC officially opened its Plastics Application Development Center (SPADC) in Saudi Arabia late last year, following closely on the heels of recent openings of research facilities in India and China. SPADC, located in the Riyadh Techno Valley of the King Saud University was inaugurated by Riyadh governor Prince Khaled bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz. The Riyal472m ($92m) investment has been government funded and is intended to encourage petrochemical research in Saudi Arabia. Mohamed Al-Mady, SABIC vice chairman and CEO, said, “The new centre is yet another important step for SABIC to evolve further as an innovation-driven company… SPADC’s role will be to introduce innovative plastics solutions to Saudi Arabia’s entrepreneurs, delivering new applications for businesses.” SPADC covers an area of 42,000 square metres and will house over 200 SABIC scientists, engineers and technicians working in close R&D collaborations with customers, academia and industrial research communities, within SABIC’s Technology & Innovation global network. 6 | GULF PLASTICS | April 2014

SPADC will be augmented over time by the establishment of a “Home of Innovation” which will provide a meeting ground b etween specifiers, customers and businessmen for growing new opportunities, in areas such as
construction materials and consumer goods. In November 2013, SABIC opened a stateof-the-art technology centre in Bengaluru, India, after an investment of $100m. The centre is home to over 300 scientists from India. SABIC also opened a similar $100m facility in Shanghai, China, which will employ 500 staff, with 170 application development and materials technologists. These two new Asian technology centres build on SABIC’s two existing dedicated application centres in the region – in Moka, Japan, and in Sungnam, South Korea. With these, SABIC has 17 Technology & Innovation facilities globally including its centres in Saudi Arabia, the US, the Netherlands and Spain. ■ www.gpca.org.ae

PBT plant in Jubail Industrial City nears completion
S
ipchem Chemicals plans to start test runs at its new polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) engineering polymer plant in Jubail Industrial City during the fourth quarter of 2014, the Saudi Arabian company said recently. Construction is currently around 77% complete. “Commercial operation, financial impact and any other updates will be announced at a later stage,” a company statement said. Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Uhde won the contract last year to build and commission the 63,000 tonne/year PBT plant. The project is estimated to cost Saudi riyal (SR) 600m ($160m).
