MSc Sustainability (Transport)

MSc Sustainability (Transport) The way the world thinks about transport is changing. We now look for responses beyond ‘predict and provide’, and take a more holistic and longer-term view about the future of transport and its relationship with the development of sustainable communities. This new programme provides insight into the evolving debate including ‘how can transport contribute to more sustainable development?’ The programme considers the interactions between the economy, society, the environment and governance, and examines the design, evaluation and implementation of policies across sectors and spatial scales. Students examine emerging drivers for change such as climate change policies and corporate governance initiatives and develop skills to deliver integrated transport solutions.

Students learn to: • • • • • •

evaluate frameworks for understanding sustainable development consider the roles that governments, markets and community groups can play in encouraging sustainability conduct strategic reviews of transport and land-use policy undertake sustainability assessments conduct land-use zoning and development control exercises evaluate key policy interventions which integrate economic imperatives with sustainable development.

Modules The programme benefits from modules delivered by both ITS and the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI), each with world-leading reputations. A choice of optional module pathways together with a research-based dissertation enables each student to shape their programme to match particular interests and future career: Introduction to Sustainability Transport Planning and Policy Transport Data Collection and Analysis Sustainability Assessment - Tools & Techniques Dissertation

Sustainable Land-Use and Transport Planning Sustainability and the Governance of Development Two optional modules - selected from a range of specialist subject areas across ITS and SRI

Entry requirements Applicants should normally have a good honours degree in a relevant discipline. Where applicable, non-UK students need to demonstrate proficiency in English language.

Scholarships Both ITS and the University offer a number of scholarships each year for UK, EU and international applicants. These range from partial fee payment to full awards of up to £14,000 tax free.

Careers The transport sector suffers from a skills shortage, meaning that those with a postgraduate qualification are ideally placed for employment and rapid career progression. Consultancies are the largest employers of ITS graduates, but other destinations include local and central government, operators, campaign groups, not-for-profit and businesses looking to develop and promote a sustainability culture.
