MSc Transport Planning


MSc Transport Planning Transport Planners play a key role in ensuring that transport systems are efficient and equitable. To do so they need to understand the core principles, techniques and concepts that underpin the discipline. This programme is designed for students from a wide range of backgrounds and prepares them for direct progression to a professional career in transport. It engages with a highly applied and practical subject, which is also academically rigorous and challenging.

Students learn to: • • • • • •

understand how and why differing transport policies work and the relationship to wider agendas analyse different perspectives on transport and their underlying assumptions collect, analyse and present transport data model the impacts of a range of interventions design and implement objective-led strategies assess future transport demand and its impacts.

Modules Compulsory modules ensure that all students, whatever their background, have a solid foundation including policy, economics, planning, modelling and data analysis. Optional modules then allow for specialisation: Transport Planning and Policy Understanding Travel Behaviour Principles of Transport Modelling Transport Data Collection and Analysis

Sustainable Land-Use and Transport Planning Three optional modules - selected from up to 17 specialist subject areas Dissertation

Entry requirements Applicants should have a good honours degree in a relevant discipline. Where applicable, non-UK students need to demonstrate proficiency in English language.

Scholarships Both ITS and the University offer a number of scholarships each year for UK, EU and international applicants. These range from partial fee payment to full awards of up to £14,000 tax free.

Careers The transport sector suffers from a skills shortage, meaning that those with a postgraduate qualification are ideally placed for employment and rapid career progression. Consultancies are the largest employers of ITS graduates, but other destinations include local and central government, operators, logistics, not-for-profit, regulatory bodies and international agencies.
