MSc Transport Planning and the Environment

MSc Transport Planning and the Environment Transport is a major cause of environmental damage. Whether it’s air pollution, noise, encroachment on the green belt or climate change, it is widely accepted that further expansion of transport must be balanced against the environmental consequences. This programme takes a detailed look at this relationship, and equips students with practical approaches to environmentally sound transport planning.

Students learn to: • • • • • • •

analyse the complex nature of the environment-transport interface undertake environmental data collection and analysis monitor and model air quality assess the environmental impacts of specific transport schemes propose and promote effective solutions which align with other policies design traffic systems to reduce pollution contribute to the wider critical debate, on local to global issues.

Modules Students study the core principles of transport planning and then apply these to the environmental issues. Having understood the nature of the problems, students consider how mitigation can be achieved, through a range of specific interventions: Transport Planning and Policy Transport Data Collection and Analysis Principles of Transport Modelling Principles of Transport Engineering Dissertation

Four optional modules - selected from up to 20 specialist subject areas including: - Transport and the Environment - Monitoring & Modelling and Traffic Pollution - Sustainable Land-Use and Transport Planning

Entry requirements Applicants should normally have a good honours degree in a relevant numerate discipline. Where applicable, non-UK students need to demonstrate proficiency in English language.

Scholarships Both ITS and the University offer a number of scholarships each year for UK, EU and international applicants. These range from partial fee payment to full awards of up to £14,000 tax free.

Careers The transport sector suffers from a skills shortage, meaning that those with a postgraduate qualification are ideally placed for employment and rapid career progression.
