About British West Indies Style In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the British Empire was establishing trading posts and coffee plantations in distant places in the Far East, India, Africa and The Caribbean. They adapted their traditional British architecture with less formal designs suited to these exotic and warm locales, resulting in the many variations of what we now call British West Indies Design. Tall ceilings and indoor outdoor spaces were designed to invite tropical breezes in and warm air to rise. Rich hard woods such as mahogany and cypress are used in contrast with lighter cabinetry and trim details. The hallmark British Colonial green is replaced with blues of the ocean and soft whites of island beaches. The Caribbean, Plantation and Hamptons styles are rooted in British Colonial design. British West Indies architecture and design is ideally suited to the tropical climate and the coastal ambiance of Southwest Florida. Relaxed, elegant and timeless.
