Green is the New Beautiful Pages 4 - 6 2015 ended as one of the best years ever for the luxury real estate market in Southwest Florida. This year began a little slower, as election uncertainties and other factors impacted home sales. The falling stock market had a definite softening effect on real estate activity. Not so coincidentally, March looks to be a super-hot month, now that the equity markets have been in a strong recovery mode for the past few weeks. In this article, we have taken an in-depth look at the top trends in landscaping and then applied them to our Southwest Florida environment. Through a close examination, you will understand ways to put your estate’s best face forward.

Stunning & Sustainable Believe it or not, the word “sustainable” can mean beautiful. At least in 2016 it can. In fact, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), 9 of the top 10 landscape architecture trends in 2016 will deal with sustainability. When researching Naples’ landscape architects, we discovered that firms are aware of these sustainable trends and acknowledge their increase in both popularity and functionality throughout the country. These are 21st century approaches, which offer economic savings and environmental responsibility, without sacrificing aesthetic beauty—in fact, they optimize it. The big question is, whether or not these trends will make their way to the Southwest Florida landscape. To give an example of what these trends entail, consider the ASLA’s number one architectural landscaping trend of 2016: rainwater/graywater harvesting. Simply put, this is a technique which involves storing rainwater and stormwater runoff and then repurposing it, creating a more natural irrigation system for your property. While this does little for the immediate aesthetic beauty of your yard, it is a progressive technique that plays a large role in protecting your local environment, ensuring its overarching beauty for the long run. Also, with the stored water, homeowners save a measurable amount of money on their lawn care, which is always a nice perk. In the sections to come, we will take a look at the top landscaping trends according to the 2016 ASLA list and identify how these methods can help keep your landscaping both sustainable and beautiful.

Native Plants One of the many benefits of living in Southwest Florida is the variety of plant and wildlife naturally found in the region. When it comes to landscaping, this can be a huge plus. Primarily, this allows homeowners to choose from a greater variety of native styles in which to adorn their estate. Native landscaping, 2016’s second largest landscaping trend (and 2015’s number one trend) is the use of plants, trees and other elements, which are naturally found within the surrounding environment of the property. Applying native landscaping allows the local ecology to thrive, letting local butterflies, birds and others interact with the environment naturally, creating a more harmonious setting. This enables your estate to relate with its surroundings in a truly peaceful way, encouraging the most serene ambiance possible. While this method may seem to limit homeowners to using only indigenous landscaping, it can also add significant value even when partially implemented. “Adding any native elements to a yard will bring an increase of local birds and butterflies,” explained Chad Washburn, Deputy Director of the Naples Botanical Garden. “So many people come to Southwest Florida for its great outdoor life. Here, we have a unique and specific sense of place. Utilizing native elements allows people to fully appreciate and participate in our local environment.” As you can see this can be a great benefit to any home owner. In Florida, utilizing native landscaping techniques is made easier than in most places, simply due to our rare geographic ability. By adding native landscaping to an estate, you can accentuate the home’s architectural style, as well as do your part in keeping the environment organically inclined.

Permeable Pavement For those who don’t recognize the term “permeable paving,” chances are you’d recognize the look of it if you saw it. Aesthetically, permeable pavement can be extremely beautiful. Featuring small criss-crosses of pavement, accented by organized and manicured patches of soil and grass, it creates a luxurious feel of grandeur, adding a “wow factor” to an estate’s entry. Despite these aesthetic advantages, the environmental impact of permeable pavement is what makes it the number five landscaping trend of 2016. By incorporating permeable pavement into your estate’s landscaping, you can effectively manage stormwater, prevent runoff and naturally collect water—allowing it to reenter the ground and nourish your lawn. Chad Washburn points out, “The more water that can be recharged into the ground, the cleaner we can keep the Gulf of Mexico and our other bodies of water.” With so many homes in our region in close proximity to the water, this is a very important feature. A technique that’s been around for hundreds (if not thousands) of years, permeable pavement is now making a resurgence among luxury clientele for both its ecological and aesthetically beautiful sensibilities.

“No Lawn” Landscaping As an increasing number of luxury homeowners begin to pursue sustainable landscaping solutions, which don’t sacrifice curb appeal, more “no lawn” landscaping is occurring. This trend is exactly what it sounds like. It is landscape design using little to no actual grass. Instead, this technique requires more structural elements, such as fountains, walkways, stones and sculptures. This style of landscaping also utilizes native trees, plants and shrubs in place of the missing lawn space. Done well, “no lawn” landscaping can be remarkably striking. Advantages of this unique approach include lower landscaping maintenance, which in turn means lowers costs. This option is especially desirable for the many Southwest Florida residents who are seasonal dwellers. Not only does this technique allow for a unique and memorable stylistic accentuation for your estate, it also is economical for you and the environment.

Friends of Hope Committee

This past school year, Christy volunteered at College Goal Sunday, where 71 families of high school seniors were provided guidance with filling out the Free Application for Federal student Aid (FAFSA) garnering $1,459,500 in scholarship offers for program participants.

Carol Wood and Claire McMahon serve on the Friends of Hope Women’s Committee and recently volunteered at An Evening in Old Havana dinner at the Bonita Bay Club with Billie Jans. This special event hosted more than 100 guests who enjoyed ballroom salsa dancers, a cigar roller and live auction that raised more than $58,000 for Joanne’s House at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs. PAWs Assistance Dogs

Homeownership Matters John R. Wood Realtors Anita Colletti and Roger Brunswick volunteered their time once again to meet with our Florida Legislators to promote homeownership rights and new legislation during Great American Realtor Days in Tallahassee Jan 11-13, 2016. 2016 also marks the 100th anniversary of Florida Realtors, celebrating “A Century of Service” to our communities.

The BuaBell Group was a sponsor at the 2016 Celebrity Martini Glass event which benefited PAWs assistance dogs. The event raffles off Martini Glasses signed by celebrities and the funds go to train dogs for deserving Veterans. Pictured with Emily is Gilbert Adler, a Hollywood movie producer who is doing a feature film on Captain Luis Montavlan and his dog Tuesday. Captain Montavlan and Tuesday were the featured guests at this dazzling event which raised over $500,000
