A More Natural Approach to Living Traditionally, when a homeowner wants to add more space to their home, they don’t tend to consider outdoor space. However, this has now become an important consideration. As Clem Schaub of Clemens Bruns Schaub Architect & Associates, P.A. explains, “Houses live bigger when outdoor space is incorporated into the overall flow.” Clem and his company are known for their “outdoor in” approach. Their philosophy is to let the physical location and natural elements narrate and inform the home’s composition, rather than enforce a style onto the landscape. The aim of their technique is simply to provide their high-end clients with the most aesthetically pleasing home possible. When deciding on what to build and how to build it, Clem’s team expresses, “Orientation is the key when arranging outdoor space.” He says often times homeowners will build a great outdoor space and it will go unused simply due to its arrangement – where it has been placed in connection to the elements surrounding it. With this in mind, it’s of vital importance to work with a team who will design and build your outdoor space in accordance to the natural needs of your home’s location. When an outdoor room has been built with its setting in mind, the home becomes borderless.

F E AT U R E S T O R Y Some homeowners have been known to raise the standards of what is expected of an outdoor space. “We have done homes with two pools,” Randy describes, “one for the morning (east facing) and afternoon (west facing) with crisp, modern waterfall features that give a relaxing ambiance.” However, what really makes these areas fantastic and stand apart is not what they are, but rather how they are designed and executed. In other words, how creatively they are built. Christine Pokorney of the Schaub firm explained the detail put into these spaces, making them so unique – and it may surprise you. “Nothing too precious,” she said, when describing the materials used in the rooms, “the fabrics, furniture, and art allow for casual living.” However, don’t be fooled, while the materials are adaptable to a more casual way of life, they still look fantastic. It’s this exact sentiment that perhaps makes these spaces so extraordinary. When done well, an outdoor space can at once take on the feeling of a highly eloquent dining room, complete with a 20-foot ceiling and 12-foot table, while at the same time feel like a casual hangout perfect for watching the view with a warm cup of coffee and a book.

The New Standard In 2015, with a thriving real estate market, the demand for a lavish outdoor space has increased tremendously. Today, luxury homes are mostly expected to feature outdoor spaces with the ability to function like indoor spaces. They’re also expected to utilize the openness and beauty of their surroundings to accentuate the space. Because of this demand, the most prestigious homes in Southwest Florida are now built with these tremendous outdoor spaces in mind.

As Randy Kurtz, Owner of Kurtz Homes Naples, explains “Outdoor spaces have long been part of the Naples residential architecture. They have become more lavish with larger covered areas for multiple seating areas. Some have a more formal and a casual entertaining area.”

While most homes are introducing more traditional spaces to the outdoors, some are taking this style to a whole other level. For example, one of Clem’s most recent projects, a home in one of Naples’ most prestigious communities, utilizes an unheard of ratio of outdoor to indoor living space.

However, Clem and his team informed us that homeowners can expect an outdoor space to cost roughly about seventyfive percent of what its indoor counterpart would cost – the doors and the air conditioning being what tends to makeup the extra twenty-five percent.

He is exactly right. And to get the most out of your outdoor space, remember it’s all about attention to detail. Any addition to your home will ultimately come down to the care and thoughtfulness put into it. If you hire the right designer and lay out your vision thoroughly, chances are you will end up with an outdoor living space that will not only transform your home, but will also transform your life.

So for those looking for a more cost efficient way to not only add value to their home, but also to add intrigue and uniqueness to it, adding outdoor living space might be a fantastic decision. Think of it this way, if the trend continues, it’s entirely possible that homes without a high caliber of outdoor living spaces will be worth less than those homes with excellent outdoor spaces. John R. Wood Agent, Steve Sims, has volunteered with CrimeStoppers since 1999! Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers serves Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Glades and Hendry Counties as a means for the public to provide information, on an anonymous basis, on unsolved crimes and wanted fugitives. Steve is on the Board of Directors and is very active with fundraising for the organization. He also is active participant in educating the public about CrimeStoppers during various parades and area events.

John R. Wood Agent, Michelle Paradis, is a frequent volunteer with Collier Harvest, a local non-profit organization that works on hunger relief in Collier County. Michelle’s most recent efforts, and other volunteer efforts across the country, resulted in a national food drive collection and distribution of 200,000+ pounds of food donated to hungry neighbors across Collier County and the United States.
