A great time to visit southwest Florida is during the off-season, when winter visitors have flocked back north and we locals have the place to ourselves. Some of the best months to be here are during the spring and early summer when bougainvillea are peaked with color and fragrances of gardenia and jasmine are everywhere. Believe me, we stop to smell the flowers – often. Back in 2006 we featured an article about the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife on Sanibel Island. At that time it was operating out of old wooden structures that had been reconfigured for hospital use – certainly better than a makeshift arrangement, but a far cry from the state-of-the-art facility it operates from today. That was only five years ago. How far it has come. This fledgling private nonprofit organization has grown into one of the country’s leading wildlife rehabilitation facilities, all with funds privately donated. That speaks volumes about the community on Sanibel Island, a large jewel in the crown of southwest Florida. Life on Sanibel is as close to idyllic as it gets. Just ask islanders why they live there and they’ll tell you that it’s all about the quality of life that living so close with nature affords. (They’ll also tell you that they rarely leave the island and that all their needs are met locally, a little surprising when the mainland is only minutes away.) What I know is that when I drive over the Sanibel Causeway to go onto the island, I seem to transition into a different mindset, becoming more relaxed, more in tune. Today, you’ll find her in the kitchen at St. Matthew’s House in Naples preparing food every Friday for the residents as well as for several other locations that offer free dinners to the homeless and others in need. Debbie also helps stock donated canned goods and organizes the food pantry. “The face of our ‘homeless’ these days is not what people think. Often these folks were our neighbors who have lost their jobs and homes. St. Matthew’s gives them a chance to get started again,” she says. This past Thanksgiving, Debbie witnessed lines of cars waiting to pick up meals. There was so much traffic that Airport Road was tied up in both directions for several blocks. “It brought tears to my eyes to see so many people in Naples who would not have had a holiday dinner if it were not for organizations like St. Matthew’s House.” For more information about St. Matthew’s House, visit www.stmatthewshouse.org.

Wood Realtors, and Alexis Barrett, interior designer at Design West, organized the first annual Do It For Duffy Softball Tournament held January 22 at North Collier Regional Park. The event benefited the family of Ryan Duffy, a student and stand-out baseball player 4 | ESTATE
at Barron Collier High School and Mississippi State University, who was in a diving accident and is now paralyzed and still on a ventilator. Eight co-ed teams and 10 men’s teams participated. Atlantis Roofing won in the co-ed division and Integrity Insurance International, Inc. won in the men’s division. A total of $8,000 was raised for the family.

Preserving and conserving the historic plantings at the Naples Zoo by naturalizing orchids into the trees are Naples Orchid Society members Bob Printz (husband of John R. As far back as he can remember, Realtor KEITH MARVELLE has been coaching Pop Warner Football. This past season his Naples Gators team made it to the Peace River Conference Championship, and even though the team lost to a very strong North Port team, the boys were proud of their very successful season. Keith says he coaches for many reasons, but mostly he enjoys seeing the kids be part of something positive and structured. “When I coach, I stress sportsmanship, the virtues of working as a team, and goal setting. Precious Cargo Academy, a pre-school at Naples United Church of Christ, officially opened its infant playground in January. The Academy’s educational program is based on the Creative Curriculum, a research-based curriculum designed specifically to meet the educational, developmental, social, emotional and physical needs of the children. Every classroom, regardless of age, contains multiple learning centers for a large variety of ways to learn. These centers are designed to increase vocabulary, introduce new ideas, increase interest in literacy, encourage creativity, build self-confidence, and develop recognition of letters, numbers, sounds, shapes, and colors.

A First for Naples Florida Realtors Leadership Academy

Realtor BARB DUNLAP and her neighborhood at Pelican Sound in Bonita Springs devoted time and resources creating beautiful baskets to be auctioned off for Rally for A Cure, a grassroots program that works to spread awareness about breast health and breast cancer in support of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. In addition to the baskets, the group also collected $250 for the cause.
Father-Son Bell Ringers Realtor PATRICK DEARBORN and his son Cooper Dearborn (age 7) rang the bell for the Salvation Army at the Neapolitan Shopping Center outside Publix this past holiday season. This is the third year in a row that Cooper and his father have volunteered to ring the bell. “I like helping others less fortunate than us,” says Cooper, “It’s what God wants us to do ... be good to each other and help each other out.”
