How To Manage Coupons On Your Magento Store?

A discount through coupon code is a simple yet most effective way to boost online conversions on an eCommerce site. On your Magento store too, coupon codes play a great role in attracting customers towards your eCommerce business. From acquiring new customers to retaining old customers, coupons do their job effectively. In this article, I am going to explain a simple way to create coupon codes for a Magento store and I will also explain how can you create different cart rules that will apply terms and conditions to the coupons.

CREATING COUPON ON MAGENTO SITES Step1: Login to your admin panel and navigate to Promotions >> Shopping Cart Price Rules using the main menu bar on the top.

On the new page, you will see a button on top-right of the page showing as Add New Rule. Click on the button.

By creating a cart rule, you can determine the rules and conditions of a shopping cart that can use the coupon. So, the new page that will open now will have the options to configure your personalized cart rule.

Here, you need to fill in all the information asked in the form shown above. The information includes: â—?

Rule Name: Provide a Name to your Cart rule so that you can easily identify it.

â—?

Description: Provide a short description to your cart rule that will tell about it.

Status: Select the status as Active or Inactive. Here, you need to make it active.

Website: Here, select the customers from Main Website

Customer Group: Select the Group of customers on the Main website who will be eligible use the coupon.

Coupon: Select the value of coupons as Specific Coupon. You can later change it to autogenerated if you want.

Coupon Code: Since we have selected as Specific Coupon, we have to provide a coupon code of our choice here.

Uses per Coupon: This field determines how many times a coupon code can be used by any customer.

Uses per Customer: This field determines how many times a customer can use the coupon.

From Date and To Date: These two fields will decide from which date to which date the cart rule will be active.

Priority: This field determines the priority of a cart rule to the other cart rules. If multiple cart rules are applicable on a shopping cart, then which rule would be applied on it is decided by the priority value given to the cart rule.

Step 2: After filling out this form, navigate to Conditions, by clicking on the Conditions option in the left pane of the same window. Here you have to create and apply your cart rule. Click on the ‘+’ radio button, it will open a drop down menu option. Here, you have to choose an item that you want to keep as condition on the rule.

The options that you can choose are shown on the image above. Here, I select Subtotal option as my condition. Once you select any of the options, you will see a new interface asking you to put the value in that condition. As I have selected Subtotal as my options it is asking me to put the value of the subtotal.

Please note: You can select as many conditions you want from the drop down option. Just click on the ‘+' icon each time and you will see the drop-down menu to select the condition. After selecting a condition, do not forget to put a value in that as per your strategy.

Step 3: Now, navigate to the third option ‘Actions’ in the left menu. Here you need to select it and apply the new rule. The options available here are: ●

Apply: Provide the information about how your rule will be applied. It will open a drop-down menu where you can select from multiple

options. Say, I select Percent of Product price Discount as I want to provide the discount in percent. You can also select from other options like: - Fixed amount discount for whole cart - Buy X get Y free ●

Discount Amount: Here you need to fill the value of the discount that you want to provide. Say, If you have selected Percent of Product price Discount in the previous option then you have to provide the discount percent and if you have selected the Fixed amount discount for whole cart then you have to provide the fixed amount. Similarly, if you have selected the Buy X to get Y free option, then you have to provide the value of ‘Y’.

Apply to Shipping Amount: This option determines if the discount amount will also apply to shipping charges. If it is selected as ‘No', then the shipping amount that you charge on shipment of the products will be excluded from the discount.

Free Shipping: If this option is selected as Yes, then every cart which applies this coupon code from this cart rule will have free shipping. Select no if you do not want to allow free shipping in this cart rule.

Stop Further Rules Processing: This is a very important option as you have to select it very carefully. If you select Yes, then no other cart rules will be applied to a cart which has already applied this cart rule.

After completing these entries, click Save to save the configurations you have made till now.

Step 4: Coupon Code Generation After new rules have been successfully added, the next job is to generate coupon codes. Now, go to Manage Coupon Codes, which is the last option in the same left menu.

Here you need to enter the following details to generate the coupon codes: ●

Coupon Qty: Enter the quantity of coupon codes that you want to generate

Code Length: Define a fixed length of your coupon codes here

Code Format: You can select the format of the code as Alphanumeric, Numeric, Alphabetic etc.

Code Prefix: Enter the text that you can to show before the coupon code.

Code Suffix: Enter the text that you want to show after the coupon code.

Dash Every X Characters: Here, on the off chance that you need – (dash) to show up after a few numbers then enter the value after which you need the dash to appear. For instance, that I need the dash to show up after each 3 numbers, then I need to put 3 here. So my code will be something like ABC-DEF-GH6

So, this is the simplest way to manage the creation of coupons on a

Magento store. Now that you have the coupon codes you can share it with your target customers. You can also see the report of how different coupons on your store are performing by going to Reports >> Sales >> Coupons. Just select the filter as per your need and a report will be provided to you.

Final Thoughts I hope this tutorial have provided a clear and simple way to create coupons on a Magento store. There are much more ways to manage coupons on a Magento store, this was one of them. There are Magento extensions which provide some advanced coupon management in form of Scratch coupons and Exit pop-ups. Nevertheless, whether you are sending discount coupons, or simply sending a price drop notification, eventually it is all about gaining new customers and retaining the old ones.
