As I write, the rain hammers against my window and thunder rumbles in the distance. The freezing temperatures have not yet set in where I live in the South East, but the wet weather is a sure sign that winter has arrived. Recent walks with my dog across the sodden playing fields nearby remind me of how difficult this time of year must be for many landscape contractors as they battle the elements to keep work schedules and budgets on track. There is little we can do about the weather, but Greg Bedson has stepped in with some useful tips that help him get through the winter months. He shares them on page 18. Not only is it important to keep warm and protected by wearing the correct clothing while working, operatives should also be mindful of using equipment correctly throughout the year. On the tools every day it is easy to slip into bad habits while operating machinery, but as the old adage goes, prevention is better than cure, so reducing the risk of injury by managing how we work can only be beneficial. For a reminder on how to manage the risks in the workplace and out in the field read our report on page 22.

New Chair takes the reins at IOG It’s a case of evolution not revolution says the new chair of The Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG), David Carpenter. “I see my role as being one of continuity and building on the excellent work of a great Board,” says David, as he takes up the reins of his three-year tenure in the post. “And one of the ways forward is by utilising every aspect of market intelligence possible so that the IOG can continue to bang the drum for an industry that is highly-valued – in both annual turnover as well as in the worldwide reputations of those within it.” With a pedigree of success in his former roles with the (as was) Sports Council and the Lottery Fund, David – who has been an IOG Board member for nine years - is certain he can make a difference. He says that much of the ammunition for this campaign will come from the IOG’s most recent industry survey, ‘Groundsmanship – Sport’s Vital Profession’, the results of which will be released on October 30 at SALTEX (Birmingham NEC). “The research not only reveals the value of the industry but, among other things, also highlights an important area that really needs to be championed – and that’s the fact that not enough young people are taking up groundscare. “That’s something I really want to change. The Young IOG Board has been a fantastic initiative, but we need to continue to lift the image and profile of a career in this industry, and work hard to promote the sector, especially to the younger generation. “It is clear that job satisfaction is high – once people
enter this sector they tend to stay in it – but we must do more to not only address salaries but, importantly, to also promote the high skill sets that are required to maintain our sports surfaces. “Today’s grounds professionals can justifiably David Carpenter be called turf scientists and their work is essential to the success of sport. That is a message that we must drum home again and again to the sports industry and to the general public.” He continues: “One of my main roles will be to champion IOG initiatives like the Pitch Grading Framework (PGF), the programme that highlights the skills needed to maintain every level of natural sports turf surfaces, alongside the appropriate education and training pathways. I am adamant that this framework needs to be actively accepted by our partners, by sports clubs and especially by local authorities which in particular have been severely hit by a skills (and manpower) shortage. “We have to improve the skills and knowledge of everyone involved in turf care. And we have to continue to raise the profile of the IOG and cement its status as the ‘go-to’ organisation for everything to do with turf care and playing surfaces. It will be a five- to 10-year programme and I can’t wait to get started.”
Rare Japanese knotweed hybrid found in south Wales Scientists at Swansea University have discovered a rare Japanese knotweed hybrid in south Wales. Although this could mean further proliferation of the invasive weed, the scientists believe the discovery may help them develop new ways of managing the spread of this destructive and notoriously difficult to combat plant. The hybrid knotweed, known as Conolly’s knotweed, was discovered during a study led by Sophie Hocking, a PhD student funded through the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS) scheme at the Welsh University. Sophie’s study formed part of intensive research that Swansea University
College of Science researchers have been conducting during the past eight years, including the world’s largest Japanese knotweed field trial. The research has been undertaken in close partnership with Complete Weed Control and Advanced Invasives, a company that has grown from the research. “We discovered evidence of Conolly’s knotweed during the study, which took place near Cardiff,” explains Sophie. “Conolly’s knotweed is a hybrid of Japanese knotweed and the common garden plant, Russian Vine. While Conolly’s knotweed is rare in the UK, records of it are increasing across continental Europe.”

NEWS knotweed family takes place. We actually didn’t expect to find any type of viable invasive knotweed seeds, because it’s extremely unlikely for any to survive wet UK winters. “The fact we did find evidence of Conolly’s knotweed means that hybridisation took place – this could be an important aspect of the Japanese knotweed invasion that we are overlooking,” Sophie concludes. Japanese knotweed is capable of producing copious amounts of seed when hybridisation occurs. If future climatic conditions become favourable for these seeds to
Sophie says the team were surprised to find evidence of the Japanese knotweed hybrid: “Conolly’s knotweed is a bit of a paradox because although it is rare in the wild, it’s the most frequently produced seed found on Japanese knotweed plants in the UK,” she says. “We didn’t expect to find Japanese knotweed in the seed bank, because plants in the UK come from a single female clone and cannot reproduce successfully without male plants, unless hybridisation with another member of the
germinate successfully, the Japanese knotweed problem might get worse. A seed bank full of hybrid knotweed could mean a second wave of invasion following treatment of the initial problem. Finding Conolly’s knotweed in the soil seedbank means that invasive knotweeds may now find an additional means of dispersal. Says Sophie: “We are currently looking at the ecology of our Japanese knotweed site to determine whether native plants will regrow after the knotweed has been tackled or whether we need to add new species to restore the habitat. This will help inform a complete best practice for managing invasive plants such as Japanese knotweed, allowing us to move beyond a reactionary approach that has characterised invasive plant management and restoration to date.”
Cutting-edge website modernises British machinery acquisition The founders of Zaros Machinery are modernising British machinery acquisition by combining a shared passion of machinery and programming. Machinery dealers Edmund Morron and Sam Elliss have recently launched an e-commerce dealership from Ipswich, Suffolk. The online dealership has been created after the pair combined their profession of website development with their passion for machinery. The site utilises state-of-the-art technology to provide a fast and simple platform for the user to find, customise, and purchase bespoke equipment. Automated systems have been designed to minimise the time-consuming process of phone calls, email chains, and face-to-face purchasing, in order to facilitate a significantly faster and more streamlined experience for website users to enjoy. Zaros currently specialises in machinery designed to be towed behind a compact tractor, quad bike, or ride-on

NEWS lawnmower; with products ranging from trailers and water bowsers, to flail mowers and salt spreaders. The dealership features equipment suited to sports grounds, large garden owners and smallholders, with plans afoot to offer larger machinery for agricultural farmers. As the team is currently small, managing and adding products is a time consuming process. This bottleneck has allowed them to be very selective in which products they
represent, with a great focus on supporting local and Britishbuilt machinery where ever possible. “The ability to customise product options has allowed us to offer equipment unavailable on any other e-commerce website. Many of the British-built machines that we offer can be highly customised, and building a system to manage this complexity has been our greatest hurdle,” says Sam Elliss. www.zarosmachinery.co.uk

SPA Power Machinery very first open day hailed a success Ground maintenance and landscaper contractors SPA Power Machinery recently launched its first open day. Visitors to the Sheffield showroom were able to view demonstrations of the next generation of chemicalfree machinery. SPA owner Simon Anthony showcased a range of machinery including the Westermann Weed Ripper, Westermann Moss Brush and Cubb Weed Brush – machines to offer chemical free and environmentally friendly alternatives to pressure washing. At times there is scepticism towards new machines entering the industry, as manufacturers attempt to produce a ‘one-size fits all machine’ at a suitable price point. But sometimes this is not possible as no job is the same as machines need to cope with a variety of issues in clearing hardstanding areas such as uneven surfaces, thick weeds, moss, delicage stone, tight corners and kerb edges, narrow pathways and steep inclines. The Westermann Weed Ripper tackles thick overgrown weeds out of the surface in one pass, typically an area that hasn’t been treated for years, while the Westermann Moss Brush removes moss and brightens up a hard surface.
Open day at SPA Power Machinery
Laurie Anthony, Director at SPA Power Machinery commented: “The instant feedback we received was wonderful with people genuinely delighted with not just the products and service but also the day in general. I’d also like to say a huge thank you to all of our staff on the day as well as Wayne Jenner from Verdego who voluntarily answered questions on how he uses the Westermann range to generate business.”

Getting Ready for Winter Dark by 4.30pm, leaves thick on the ground and temperatures continuing to fall - winter is here. Changeable weather at this time of year can cause havoc to a landscaper’s working day, so Greg Bedson offers some tips to get through the months ahead For contractors working outdoors, hours and on occasion entire days are lost due to the weather. Some clients may even decide they don’t need landscaping services until the Spring so this all contributes to making the winter months quite daunting and bleak for those working in the industry. However with a bit of careful planning and preparation, things certainly don’t need to be all doom and gloom. Some may choose to plan for the winter downturn by simply working longer hours from spring though to autumn to be able to afford a period of shutdown, to consolidate and get prepare for the year ahead. Others by contrast will do quite the opposite and take full advantage of the opportunities winter brings, other seasons cannot such as planting - particularly barefoot and rootball varieties. The winter months are also a great time for hard pruning many varieties of trees and shrubs. And for those within the industry who look to simply plough on and work through the months ahead, here are a few tips to keep you going until spring.
18
www.landscapermagazine.com
LAYER UP Author Alfred Wainwright once wrote, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” Although in the depths of winter, when one day you can’t get a spade into the soil because the ground is frozen solid and the next day you struggle to get your boot out of it because a month’s rainfall has hit overnight, this might be difficult to agree with - the right clothing can certainly make the winter months slightly more bearable. It is generally agreed that the best way to dress for cold and wet conditions is to use the layering system. The benefit of using a layering system is that you can prepare for any weather eventuality. The base layer This first layer that sits directly against your skin has two main functions - to drive moisture away from your skin and to regulate your body temperature. This layer should be tight fitting and made from a suitable material such as wool, polyester or polypropylene. Cotton should be avoided as it
FEATURE
Hand forking
soaks up any moisture that may build up, that then won’t dry out, therefore making you cold. The mid layer The mid layer primarily acts as insulation. It guides any body heat that your base layer didn’t retain back into your body and will also help stop cold air passing through. Microfleeces, soft shells, merino wool tops and thin insulated jackets are all popular examples. A good mid layer will also be breathable and take any moisture way from the base layer out to be evaporated. Outer layer It is this layer that provides most protection from the elements. This will usually be waterproof and breathable, allowing sweat and water vapour to escape the body and keep you dry. The thickness of this outer layer will depend on the weather and the task in hand. However a shell jacket is usually sufficient, but If it is particularly cold then you may also wish to consider a second mid layer. KEEP OFF THE GRASS A common scenario for grounds staff across the country is management of grass. The grass is still growing, but constant downpours mean mowing a sports pitch could be detrimental. Dan Prest, Head of Technical and Learning at the institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) shares his advice. “As winter sports are now in full swing this is the time of year, post renovations, where any maintenance activities can
make or break the rest of the season. This year in particular has seen some continued mild weather so soil temperatures will still enable grass growth, which will need to be kept under control so that a suitable height of cut for sport participation is maintained. “However, the seasonal wetter periods mean that access to the playing surfaces with machinery should be limited. Planning is key and an assessment of the surface should always be carried out. Ultimately, we are all trying to produce a suitable and safe playing surface for the level of sport that is being played. “Take a moment to think about the task you want to carry out, with what machine and the expected outcome. For example, can your weekly schedule be re-worked if the weather is bad? If you do go on the surface will it impact on future works over the coming weeks? Perhaps a little hand forking rather than mowing could make the difference.” SERVICE TOOLS AND MACHINERY Generally machines such as lawn mowers are stored away during winter months, but they still need maintenance even if not in daily use. Jim Upson, from Upson Mowers recommends booking machinery in for a service, sooner rather than later so that all repairs done in time for the new season. “Forward planning is always going to put you ahead of the game and machinery servicing is no exception,” explains Jim. “If you wait until spring you’ll find every mower shop is fully booked for weeks. If you get your machines sorted before Christmas the machines will be waiting for you

FEATURE
serviced and sharpened ready to go when you need them.” A good tip especially if the dry weather comes early. KNOW WHEN TO STOP We’ve all been there – up against a deadline to get a project or particular task finished. All is going well, then suddenly the weather changes and wrecks havoc to all of your plans. If weather becomes dangerous or simply unproductive, you may be in a dilemma - to either grin and bear it and
plough on or simply pack up and either call it a day. This will of course depend on the work involved and most of the time will require leaning on your experience and a trust of instinct. Carrying on for the sake of it may compromise the quality of the job, damage tools, create more clearing up to do once the task is complete and in some cases, increase the picking up injuries and illnesses. Employers also have a duty of care concerning the health and safety of their employees, so risk assessments should be carried out prior to any work which could be affected by the weather. DIVERSIFY Hopefully the ‘write- off days’ will be few and far between, but as the one predicable thing about British winters is the changeable weather, so it won’t do any harm to diversity your skillset and services your company offers. This could be anything from getting the training and equipment to provide gritting and snow clearance, to setting up an online shop selling relevant products and services. The more you are able to offer potential clients, the greater the scope for potential income.

HEALTH & SAFETY
Occupational hazard
Working with machinery in the great outdoors is all in a days work for those who work in land based industries. However, due to the nature of the profession, work related injury and illnesses do occur from time to time. Landscaper, Greg Bedson, reports on some key risks Manual Handling Between 2001-08 there were 3600 injuries to those working in the amenity industry as a result of handling. Manual handling relates to the movement of items by lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing or pulling according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), and in medical terms injuries resulting from these tasks are classified under a wider group of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The term ‘musculoskeletal disorders’ covers any injury, damage or disorder of the joints or other tissues in the upper/lower limbs or the back. Figures from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) indicate that MSD cases account for more than a third of all work-related illnesses reported each year. There is evidence that, as well as manual handling, heavy manual labour, awkward postures and a recent or existing injury are all risk factors in the development of MSDs.
22
www.landscapermagazine.com
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (MHOR) require employers to manage the risks to their employees. To do this they must: •A void hazardous manual handling operations so far as is reasonably practicable, by redesigning the task to avoid moving the load or by automating or mechanising the process. • Make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling operations that cannot be avoided. • Reduce the risk of injury from those operations so far as is reasonably practicable. Where possible, provide mechanical assistance, for example, a sack trolley or hoist. Where this is not reasonably practicable then explore changes to the task, the load and the working environment. Medical and scientific knowledge stress the importance of an ergonomic approach to look at manual handling as
HEALTH & SAFETY a whole, taking into account the nature of the task, the load and the working environment and requiring worker participation. Lyme disease Figures recently released by Public Health England, suggest that Lyme disease is currently on the increase in the UK, with the number of infections having risen by up to 35 percent between 2016 and 2017. According to the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Lyme disease is typically spread to humans via ticks, after they have become infected with bacteria by biting certain animals such as rodents, some birds and other small animals. Infected ticks then transmit the bacteria to humans by attaching themselves to a person via long grass or foliage. Most UK cases are in the Southern Counties and the Scottish Highlands, however Stella Huyshe-Shires from Lyme Disease Action (LDA) explains that the disease can be caught anywhere in the UK and those who spend the majority of time outdoors are most at risk, particularly in grassy and wooded areas. The LDA has shared the following tips to help prevent catching Lyme Disease. • consider buying permethrin impregnated clothing • use tick repellents on exposed skin • always brush off work clothing before going inside • always check your skin for ticks when washing. • carry a tick remover, so when sitting down for lunch and feeling a slight itch behind your knee, you can properly remove the attached tick!
Hand-arm vibration Hand-arm vibration is vibration transmitted into workers’ hands and arms. This can be transmitted from power tools such as hedge trimmers, chainsaws and brush cutters - as well as through the steering wheel of driven equipment including ride-on mowers. According to HSE, failure to take appropriate measures when using these tools for prolonged amounts of time could lead to the user developing hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and carpal tunnel syndrome.

HEALTH & SAFETY Fingers going white (blanching) and then becoming red and painful on recovery, reducing the ability to work in cold or damp conditions, for example outdoors. Signs and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) Symptoms and effects of CTS can also occur and include tingling, numbness, pain and weakness in the hands which can interfere with work and everyday tasks and might affect the ability to work safely. HSE have provided the following tips to reduce the risks of developing HAVS and CTS: • Ask to use suitable low-vibration tools. • Always use the right tool for each job (to do the job more quickly and expose you to less hand-arm vibration). • Check tools before using them to make sure they have been properly maintained and repaired to avoid increased vibration caused by faults or general wear. • Make sure cutting tools are kept sharp so that they remain efficient. • Reduce the amount of time you use a tool in one go, by doing other jobs in between. • Avoid gripping or forcing a tool or workpiece more than

you have to. • Store tools: so that they do not have very cold handles when next used. • Encourage good blood circulation by: •K eeping warm and dry (when necessary, wear gloves, a hat, waterproofs and use heating pads if available); •G iving up or cutting down on smoking because smoking reduces blood flow; and massaging and exercising your fingers during work breaks.

GROOT GROENPLUS
Groot GroenPlus report The Dutch horticulture sector is the undisputed international market leader in flowers, plants, bulbs and propagation material - highlighted each year at the Groot GroenPlus (Great in Green) international trade fair. David Curtis reports back on this year's event Groot GroenPlus took place in Zundert, Holland close to the Belgium border, in early October. It continutes to be a bustling, busy trade show, hosting more than 250 exhibitors and bringing visitors from across the world to see the latest innovations from nurseries, dealers, manufacturerers, subcontractors and suppliers from the Netherlands and Belgium. The Netherlands is the world’s largest exporter of live trees and plants and the third largest exporter of vegetable products. Within the European Union, they are the fifth largest producer of vegetables and the tenth largest producer of fruit. The European Union is the largest trading partner for Dutch horticultural products. Around 85 percent of all Dutch horticultural exports (€18.9 billion) are to the other EU member states with Germany the largest customer by far, accounting for 38 percent of all Dutch exports to the EU. Of the approximately 1,800 new plant varieties that enter the European market each year, 65% originate in the Netherlands. In addition, Dutch breeders account for more than 35% of all applications for community plant variety rights.
26
www.landscapermagazine.com
The total export value of flower bulbs from this region is approximately €650 million per year. The United States is the leading export destination spending around €120 million per annum, followed by Germany at €72 million per annum, Japan at €66 million per annum, the UK at €58 million per annum and France at €46 million per annum. The nursery stock business is more focused on the European markets as 90% of the total sales of €460 million is sold within the borders of the European Union with the UK accounting for €92 million worth of sales. With the UK market in mind, exhibitors confirmed that at the moment they can get plants over to the UK within three to four days. However, many are alarmed at the current political situation in the UK and are concerned on how Brexit may affect their exports to the UK and potential delays at the ports. Notwithstanding the situation in the UK the horticultural industry in Holland is extremely healthy and the mood is optimistic. TURF & GROUNDSCARE
Versatile range to tackle range of groundworks Equipped with a fleet of BLEC machinery, Talbot Farm Landscapes and Talbot Sports Turf can tackle landscape and groundcare projects of all shapes and sizes. With the latest count standing at 21 machines from across the BLEC portfolio, Director Sean Goodwin relies on the versatility and efficiency the range offers when it comes to groundworks and surface preparation. Established for more than 30 years and with a team of over 40 operatives, Talbot take on commercial landscape projects and sports turf contracting throughout the UK and Europe. They have worked at every national stadium in the UK, and proudly installed the turf at the London Olympic Stadium following the opening ceremony. “With a lot of our projects there is no margin for error, and that’s where trust and a thorough understanding of our equipment comes in” explains Sean. “I know with such a range of BLEC equipment at my disposal, that no matter the type of surface we’re dealing with, that we have the equipment we need to complete the job efficiently.” In addition to four Cultipack Seeders, Talbot’s has a Disc Seeder; Turfmaker; five Blecavators of varying widths; three Power Box Rakes; two Rotor Rakes; a 2.5m Laser Grader and two Multi-Seeders. “The beauty of the BLEC machines is that they show a real understanding of what the commercial landscaper and sports turf contractor requires, demonstrated by their versatility. While the Blecavator is technically a stone burier it does so much more than that – you can move material off the surface and prepare an ideal seed bed, all with one machine.” “The Cultipack Seeder is another multi-functional tool that
Multiseeder from BLEC range
does more than just deliver seed into the ground. The front notched rollers aid in the preparation of surfaces and as a compact, pedestrian unit we can easily manoeuvre this into restricted access sites. To achieve optimal results, we can use the Cultipack in conjunction with other seeders, such as the Turfmaker, on larger scale projects.” The most recent addition for Sean was a Multi-Seeder 2100, the first machine purchased via Charterhouse Turf Machinery. “The BLEC build quality has always impressed me but under the guidance of Redexim it is now even better – well engineered and attention paid to every detail. With the resources available to Redexim, the manufacturing prowess and the ability to stock a wider range of parts through their dealer network, they will be able to take BLEC to the next level.”
Pitch perfect for sporting success The recent sporting success of the Warwick Independent Schools Foundation is largerly down to the high quality and well-maintained sports pitches, which are managed by Grounds Manager Duncan Toon and his team. And the tools that have helped produce significant improvements to the schools’ sports surfaces are the SISIS Flexibrush and SISIS TM1000 says Duncan. The SISIS Flexibrush is a tractor-mounted brush which is equally effective at dispersing top dressing, removing excess material on natural turf and synthetic surfaces, dew dispersal

and improving presentation. It has a 5.35 metre working width, its brush sections float to follow ground contours and the outer sections fold for transport and storage. “For us it has eliminated the previously time-consuming task of dew removal,” explains Duncan. “Everything gets a bit hectic here on a school day but the Flexibrush gives us a big head start because we can start early at 7am and knock all the dew off the grass before the children start classes. It has helped us to reduce disease and I also use it for presentation.” The SISIS Rotorake TM1000 is a tractor-mounted heavy-
TURF & GROUNDSCARE duty scarifier and linear aerator and is unrivalled when it comes to removing and controlling thatch. It includes a collector box and floating unit to follow ground contours and its contra-rotating reel throws debris forward ensuring a clean, consistent groove resulting in an excellent finish. The TM1000 also features interchangeable blades and a quick, simple depth setting without tools. “We mainly bought the TM1000 for in-house cricket renovations but it is also used for regular maintenance work on the squares,” Duncan says. “It is great for verticutting and we also have the 2mm scarifying removal reel and the brush reel which we use for cleaning up. It is such a simple, yet effective piece of equipment – in fact I would say it is a musthave tool for any groundsman to have in their armoury.”

Reliable mowers the key to success Running a successful landscaping business with a variety of customers, from caravan parks to councils, roadside work to churchyards and private estates is no easy task. For North East England contractor Chris Stamp and his team at CA Stamp Grounds and Agriculture, it is of paramount importance that he has the right equipment to meet his client’s high expectations. Much of Chris’ work involves the need of reliable, durable mowers and when last year his machines were due for renewal he decided to take a look around SALTEX (2018) for some inspiration. “Following a look around SALTEX at the products on offer, I contacted our local dealer Rickerby for a demonstration of the ISEKI SF224,” explains Chris. “I knew as soon as I tried the machine it was perfect for what I needed. Being located in the north of the country we get plenty of rainfall, the ISEKI mower really does cut and collect even in the wettest and harshest conditions whilst leaving the same brilliant finish every time with no blockages. This ability is invaluable, it enables us to be flexible when we carry out jobs with no downtime due to weather conditions.” Added value comes with the powerful collector system which enables easy clearing up after scarifying or collection of fallen leaves. In addition the high tip collector with a clearance of over 2.1 metres enables an operator to tip all the waste straight into the back of a trailer saving considerable man hours. “The large 950 litre hopper allows us to mow for longer, enabling us to be more efficient with our time - the SF224 really speeds everything up for us,” says Chris.
Tipping trailer saves on man hours
Chris also purchased an ISEKI SRA950F 4WD 24hp brushcutter, for slope mowing up to 25 degrees and cutting of overgrown, out of control areas. “We saw the machine on demonstration with our local dealer. I couldn’t believe how powerful and effective it was at tackling thick vegetation, while leaving such a superb finish. It was a complete impulsive buy!” “I’d also like to add our local dealer Rickerby is faultless, Rob and the service team’s knowledge of the machinery is second to none, if I ever have a problem they are out and sorting the problem so quickly. As a contractor their brilliant back-up and service is invaluable.”

marking supplier to the sports turf sector. He joins MTD with a wealth of industry experience and know-how and is well placed to offer technical advice, backed up by a number of accreditations including the Institute of Groundsmanship, City & Guilds Land Based Services (formerly NPTC) and LANTRA (National Training Organisation for the Land Based Industries) certifications. “The opportunity to join MTD was one I just couldn’t turn down” Oliver explains. “I have long admired the design and engineering prowess of the INFINICUT® and TMSystem™ products, as well as their emphasis on environmentallyfriendly technology. The battery-powered market is one that is moving forward pretty quickly and it was something I was keen to get involved in. The beauty is that while the brands are making waves worldwide, the company remains familyorientated at its core making it a pleasure to work for.”
Exeter Chiefs get by with a little help from their friends – and Johnsons Sports Seed A change in career is a daunting prospect, but it can often be made easier with training and support from new industry peers. For Max Sandford, a joiner by trade, he is quickly learning ‘all things turf’ after taking over as Head Groundsman at Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club 18 months ago. One of those trusted contacts is Ian Barnett of DLF Seeds who has supported Max using sport seed, Johnsons J Premier Pitch, across the club’s stadium and training facilities. “The world of grass seed was very new to me,” Max explains, when he accepted the top job in early 2018. “Ian, our regional DLF Technical Manager, together with my local distributor have spent a lot of time going back to basics, looking at cultivars and mixture qualities which has given me a much better understanding. The support has been invaluable and has certainly given me enough of an insight to see that the Johnsons mixtures are doing a fantastic job!”

A combination of J Premier Pitch and the ProNitro coated version, J Nitro Premier Pitch, have been used across the site for the past seven years. “We carry out a full renovation on both pitches each year after the final game and overseed
TURF & GROUNDSCARE roughly every six to eight weeks, depending on the time of year and pitch usage,” explains Max. “I am very impressed with the germination, the density of coverage and the strong colour we achieve year on year. The wear tolerance is a major factor for rugby, especially in the scrummaging areas, but the J Premier Pitch holds firm which is testament to the strength of the rooting.” On the back of Ian’s advice, Max is looking forward to trying Johnsons J 4Turf
mixture for the first time this winter, to deliver deeper rooting and rapid establishment even under low soil temperatures. “I enjoy reading about what other groundsmen are using and when I see Johnson’s mixtures used at leading facilities around the country, I feel confident that I’m sourcing the best products I can for the club. Ultimately, I’ve found if you ask the right people the right questions, you will get the right answers!”
Hybrid pitch benefits from a liquid and granular programme
Hybrid pitch at Gloucester Rugby Club
When Head Groundsman Stuart Lambert joined Gloucester Rugby in the summer of 2018, a brand-new hybrid pitch installation had just been completed at the clubs Kingsholm Stadium. Having no prior hybrid experience, Stuart turned to his trusted suppliers to help him formulate a new maintenance programme. Top of the list was scrapping the existing nutritional regime and switching over to a full liquid and granular programme from Headland Amenity. Stuart has used Headland products for more than 10 years, including during his time at Worcester Warriors where he was part of the award-winning ‘Professional Rugby Grounds Team of the Year’. “I knew what I wanted to achieve so called on the advice of Headland’s Adi Masters, who helped me formulate a plan that would be able to work on the fasterleaching hybrid surface. To achieve optimal results, we’re using a combination of liquid and granular applications.” Because of the free draining nature, one issue they worked on was moisture retention. “Adi recommended TriCure Ad™ which we applied once a month throughout the summer
to hold onto what little rainfall we received - this worked really well. Coming out of that dry summer and into a wetter winter, we then had a few problem areas retaining water, mostly due to compaction from the installation process. For this, we applied Terafirm™ soil penetrant once every four weeks between October and February which effectively moved the water away.” They were also one of the first customers to use the 15-5-12 formulation of Headland’s new controlled release fertiliser, H-Cote™ Mini. “We’d had some games back to back and I was looking for something to give the pitch a bit of a boost so we applied H-Cote™ and the colour response, in particular, was fantastic. It delivered results that transformed the appearance of the pitch, making it a staple in my summer feeding programme.” “The hybrid pitch has given us stability in many ways, but in terms of the nutritional inputs required it’s been a bit of a balancing act. Adi has provided fantastic support, and our combined knowledge and experience is ensuring we’re achieving the best results we can by applying the right nutrients,” says Stuart.

Sherriff taking Bovey Castle back to the top Scott Duff, head greenkeeper at Bovey Castle in Devon, is using a range of Sherriff Amenity products to help the club get back into the Top 100 Golf Courses. Scott started his turf career in football at Torquay United FC before switching to greenkeeping. He admits that it was somewhat of a challenging transition but claims that he has no regrets. “When I was in football groundsmanship, I had always wanted to try greenkeeping but to be honest I was always worried that I would be out of my depth,” he said. “I went from looking after just one surface which had a fairly consistent maintenance regime to suddenly looking after a multitude of different areas – each with their own requirements. It was the biggest challenge in my career but also the best because I can confidently say that I love my job.” Alongside course manager Sean Bennett, Scott is now clear on achieving his goals. “We are a championship course which used to be in the top 100 but not anymore unfortunately. Quite simply our goal is to get back in there. I think with Sean’s knowledge of managing a course, his drive and his passion, along with the improvements he wants to make, I think it is very realistic. “We are not a million miles away but we still have a lot of work to do and with people like David Chammings from Sherriff Amenity on-board then this will only boost our chances. David has really changed the way we approach our feed programmes and also some of the work we do out on the course because he draws up management plans which concentrate on what we should be doing throughout certain periods of the year.” After consultation, David recommended a tank mixture consisting of iNTrench fertiliser 15.0.9 and GoGreen Energy bio-stimulant for the greens – two products which perfectly complement one another.
32
www.landscapermagazine.com
iNTrench is a controlled uptake nitrogen fertiliser designed specifically for the needs of professional sports turf. It gives up to ten weeks of improved blade colour and a higher quality turf with 66% the nitrogen rate of leading competitors. Its tank-mix partner, GoGreen Energy, is a concentrated bio-stimulant, formulated to assist plant health and relieve stress symptoms. “Every course is different and you have to work out what is best for your site,” says Scott. “With iNTrench and GoGreen, we find that if we go at half rate (20 l/ha) every two weeks, then the greens seem to hold the nutrients a lot better. By applying it like this we notice healthier greens and also better longevity out of the products. This tankmix has worked really well for us and there has been a big improvement in the greens. “In fact, we also use this mix with the addition of seaweed on our tees if they need some instant colour-up.” Scott also reported excellent results from Sherriff Amenity’s Aqua-Zorb 45 – a unique wetting agent, which helped him through a somewhat difficult summer last year. “Last year, Aqua-Zorb was a real saviour for us. I would say that at least 90% of courses in the UK would say that the disease period for golf was horrendous last year and a good wetting agent could have saved money on fungicides and relieved the drought stress. “We had such intense heat last year and Aqua-Zorb still worked incredibly well considering we were frequently seeing temperatures of 30°C plus. “I feel we have been going through a massive transition period and this year we will see even more improvements to the course. The Sherriff Amenity products have played a big role in the success over the past couple of years and I can’t fault the service from David whatsoever.”

Kit from Charterhouse Turf Machinery helps improve drainage Andy Garland, Course Manager at Hertfordshire’s Centurion Club, is working on improving course-wide surface drainage with a little help from his new VertiDrain 7521. Focussing on the fairways, his latest bit of kit from Charterhouse Turf Machinery, will be fundamental as club preparations ramp up to host the 2020 UL International Crown event. Televised to millions, 2020 will be the fourth edition of the Women’s Professional tournament and the first time it will be hosted in the UK. Andy and his greens team of 12 are already well into preparations to ensure the course is fit for a worldwide audience. “When it comes to aeration, we have a small machine for use on the greens, but we had been hiring in a unit for work on the fairways,” he explains. “The trouble with that was, the effectiveness of the work conducted was very much at the mercy of the weather and the resulting ground conditions on that day.” With previous experience of Verti-Drains, Andy spoke with his local dealer Browns and had a demonstration of
the 7521 model. “You know what you’re going to get with a Verti-Drain – the ability to use different tines to work at good depths and build quality that can handle compacted soils,” he explains. Having taken delivery of his new machine complete with different head options in August, the 7521 has been busy on the fairways, together with some deep aeration work on the greens. “We equipped the Verti-Drain with one inch tines and aerated all of the fairways, which instantly improved surface drainage. Water dispersal has been so much better which is crucial as we head towards the winter period. We hope to get one more round done on all 18 holes before the tractor gets put onto renovation projects over the winter. This should help us emerge in spring ready for full tournament preparation,” says Andy. “By having our own Verti-Drain we can be flexible around the weather conditions and the maintenance schedule to maximise its effectiveness. It will be a key tool as we get ready for our big event next summer.”

ARBORIST
Rear handle chainsaw hit the mark ECHO has developed a rear handle version of its highly successful CS-2511TES top handle chainsaw. The CS2511WES is ‘an exceptional chainsaw which will suit professionals across all sectors,’ say ECHO. There’s even a version designed specifically for carvers. Weighing just 2.6kg (dry weight) and producing 1.10kW of power, the CS-2511WES has the best power-to-weight ratio in its class. This makes it both highly manoeuvrable and usable for long periods without fatigue. It is ideal for trimming, pruning, small logging and wood carving. “Every ECHO product is designed around the needs of the end-user,” say ECHO, “the CS-2511WES is no exception.” It features a palm rest for precise control, a tool-less air filter cover to allow easy access to the air filter, even when wearing gloves, and tool-less access to fuel and oil tanks. There’s a side access chain tensioner for easy chain adjustment and an anti-icing system to prevent the carburettor from freezing in colder months. Easy Start, ECHO’s patented system, ensures effortless starting, while the oiler adjustment on the top of the chainsaw gives the operator control of the oil flow for optimum operation. Designed and manufactured in Japan, the CS-2511WES is powered by a 25.0cc professional-grade, Stage 2 low emissions compliant ECHO engine. It comes with a 0.050” gauge, 30cm (12”) cutting bar. For carvers, the CS-2511WESC has a 0.043” gauge, 25cm (10”) carving bar and chain. Both chainsaws come with a two-year professional or five-year domestic warranty.
Chipping away storm damage Sitting on one of the highest points in the area, Cornwall’s Looe Golf Club enjoys panoramic views across the peaks of Dartmoor and the English Channel, but because of its location the part heathland/part parkland course often falls victim to strong winds. This leaves head greenkeeper, Mat Edwards, with the job of clearing up destruction left behind – now a much easier task thanks to his CS100 woodchipper from GreenMech. “Because of the number of trees around our course and
36
www.landscapermagazine.com
the vulnerability of our high position, it was becoming quite costly calling firms in to deal with storm damage,” explains Mat. So Mat invested in the necessary equipment or his team of three staff to tackle the clear-up. “Our local dealer Vincent Tractors and Plant recommended the GreenMech CS100 as its size and usability would meet our requirements, so we had a demonstration and - after ruling out any alternatives took delivery of one roughly three years ago.” With the CS100 at their disposal, Mat has also increased
ARBORIST the amount of routine woodland maintenance they conduct. “Once the leaves have fallen and the birds have finished nesting, we’ll be out with the CS100 on a weekly basis, between November and February – removing any low hanging branches which helps to reduce shade problems on the greens. The chip we produce is then redistributed around the trees and shrubs which has helped to tidy the appearance of these areas.” Offering a 100mm chipping capacity, but with a working width of just 760mm, the manoeuvrability of the CS100 has proven ideal for on-the-spot chipping. “It is really convenient for us to hitch up to our 4x4 vehicle and you can take it wherever you need to go. It’s simple to use and everything is accessible, including the blades which can be easily sharpened. Three years on, we’re still using the original set of blades and these are still going strong.” The GreenMech CS100 is designed with the professional landscaper, arborist and green space manager in mind, offering compact dimensions without any compromise in performance. Powered by an 18hp petrol engine, it can process large volumes of brashy material with minimal shredding or reducing.

IRRIGATION
Smart irrigation options from Rain Bird
Rain Bird's latest ESP-ME3 irrigation controller for residential and light commercial applications is claimed by the company to be its most versatile yet. Its key feature is its in-built flow monitoring terminal, which allows users to take advantage of the multiple benefits of flow monitoring. The controller is also WiFi ready and upgradeable to a smart controller by adding Rain Bird's proven LNK WiFi module. This allows users to access, operate and monitor their irrigation system from anywhere at any time via the App. The built-in flow monitoring terminal is a feature not available on many other similar types of controller. Compatibility with multiple sizes and makes of wired flow monitoring sensors help users to save water by sending data to the controller for precise monitoring of water flow and accurate flow rates. It can assist in monitoring system performance, the detection of low/excess flow conditions, leaks and can shut down affected areas. This helps to save water and prevent overwatering of plants or damage to the landscape. Rain Bird's WR2 rain sensor can also be added to the configuration of the controller. By plugging in the separate LNK WiFi Module with its accompanying App, users are given a complete, easy to use irrigation solution. Built-in notifications provide

troubleshooting access, system diagnostics and operational information. The module receives internet based weather information and can automatically adjust system run times and irrigation schedules on a daily basis. Potential long term water savings are up to 30%. This highly flexible ESP-ME3 controller is configurable from four to 22 stations, with an additional three or six station modules available to meet future extra irrigation needs. Users can add these modules without removing or even powering down the controller. Simple operation is a major user benefit. Various manual settings can be made such as by-passing a rain sensor for certain stations when consistent watering is needed in areas such as under the eaves of a house, under decking or in a greenhouse. A seasonal adjust feature is designed to save water by changing the seasonal adjust from 5% to 200% for corrected run times without changing scheduled irrigation times. Alarm notifications alert the user to any operational issues such as power supply, programming or high flow rates when using the flow sensor. A red LED and scrolling messages, as well as mobile device alerts when used with the LNK WiFi App, are also provided. For more information contact visit www.rainbird.eu

Irrigation game-changer at golf club The installation of a new Hunter Irrigation system, supplied by Kar UK and installed by Prime Irrigation at Redditch Golf Club, has resulted in significant improvements to the course reports course manager, Karl Williams. Manager since October 2014, Karl noted that the course, known for its woodlands, topography and quality playing surfaces, needed improvement in some areas. “In 2015 we had an appraisal on the old irrigation system, which confirmed the inadequacies and poor reliability of the system. With continuous bursts and cable breaks, which resulted in an awful lot of hand watering,” explains Karl. Following an agreement by the committee new systems using Hunter prodcuts was put in place. G885D Series Rotors – With a built-in decoder offering single head control, superior uniformity coupled with the TTS technology allowing every serviceable element of the rotor to be accessed through the top giving way to every component without disturbing the playing surface. less item on a busy course manager’s schedule. I-20 Series Rotors – A high performance rotor for tees and a popular choice for many turf managers, with the efficiency required for any site. Utilising the Match Precipitation Rate (MPR) nozzles ensures accurate, even distribution and water savings over a variety of mixed sprinkler arcs. Pilot CCS PC-based central control system - a PC-based software package that makes central control of large-scale irrigation systems affordable, usable, and comprehensible. “The new system has been an absolute game-changer,” says Karl. “The biggest area of improvement has been on the tees. For example, prior to the new system, the first tee had just four larger sprinklers along one side and they would overshoot, miss the tee and spill onto the path. Now we have five I-20 rotors on each side of the tee fitted with the Matched Precipitation Rate nozzles. This ensures that the water is applied to the tee playing surface at all times, receives excellent coverage and results in saving water, which makes it all very efficient!”

VIEWPOINT
Native benefits By Greg Bedson A recent study published by the International Union for Conservation and Nature (IUCN) has found that more than half of Europe’s endemic trees - those that don’t exist anywhere else on earth - are threatened with extinction. Popular Tree species in the Sorbus genus, which include the Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia subsp. maderensis) and the Crimean Rowan (Sorbus tauricola) are particularly vulnerable, with 75 percent of Europe’s Sorbus species assessed as threatened. The horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) famed for producing conkers, has also been classified as vulnerable following declines caused by the leaf-miner moth (Cameraria ohridella) - an invasive species originating from the mountainous regions of the Balkans. According to the study, the primary threats to these species are climate change, the loss and destruction of Europe’s wild areas, agriculture and the introduction of alien invasive species. While most of the above are beyond the direct control of those in the landscaping industry, it does raise the question should we stop planting non-native species in order to protect those indigenous to the area? Native species tend to harbour far more wildlife than their exotic counterparts. According to the table extracted from various scientific studies by the Offwell Woodland and Wildlife Trust, Indigenous oak species harbour 284 insect species while varieties of Willow support 266. In stark contrast, the table indicates that the highly invasive Rhodedron ponticum, first introduced to Britain in 1763 and now covering roughly 3.3 percent of Britain’s total woodland, harbours no insects. The aforementioned study does recognise that even some native species, for example Yew due to its toxicity, only supports four species of insect. It should also be noted that plants do of course serve a greater role for species other than providing food. Buddleja davidii for instance, introduced to the UK in the 1800s, although invasive and disliked by many for their association with railway lines, is often cited as being one of the best plants for wildlife in this country. In fact, according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) just 8 percent of the 402 non-native plants established in the wild in Great Britain are stated to have a negative
impact. This suggests it is not necessarily an issue of where the plant itself originates from, but the effect it has on the ecosystem as a whole. So should we be less patriotic when it comes to our trees and shrubs and instead, be looking to plant ‘foreign’ species in order to compensate for the native plants prone to disease? The beloved horse chestnut mentioned above, now seen as a staple of the Britain’s parklands, is actually an import itself - arriving from Turkey in the late 16th century. Furthermore, some researchers are now suggesting that as the summers get hotter and drier, some of the more exotic species may well be better suited to the climate of the future than our native species and that this could actually be a benefit of global warming, possibly producing fruits in the UK that up until now have not been possible - therefore eliminating the need to import these from far flung places. We do of course need to take responsibility and ensure we are not introducing more pests and diseases into the UK for the sake of beautiful gardens and landscapes. Futhermore, it’s wise to take into account of any Brexit outcome and how it could play a role in preventing pests and diseased plants from entering these shores, as plants could be subject to stricter checks when imported from the European Union. The RHS has already taken its own measures - in 2018 it banned nine species of plants grown outside of Britain from the Chelsea Flower Show, including lavender and rosemary in an attempt to stop the spread of disease brought in from the continent. Of course it will be a huge disappointment if we have to say goodbye to any of the beloved species that help to define the British landscape, and we should be doing all we can to prevent this decline, and the decline of the ecosystems they support. We should also take into consideration whether importing particular varieties of shrubs and trees from thousands of miles away, will offer positive differences and benefit a space more than something grown closer to home. We are lucky to have access to such a wonderful array of plants and as long as the environmental impacts are considered, then we can hopefully choose and plant varieties that will support our planet for generations to come.

Instant impact from Green Screens on housing estate Contractors Kings Landscapes has turned to suppliers Green-tech for the green screens that are part of the extensive landscape plans for a new housing estate in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire . Bovis Homes on the Stanton Cross estate, which is being heralded as an exciting, brand-new community. Once

complete it will provide more than 3,650 new homes, a leisure and retail area and will also bring new public parks, schools, and a doctor’s surgery. Landscaping duites for the project fell to Kings Landscapes. Part of their remit was to screen off a concrete retaining wall which was visible from the road. They wanted a solution that would provide instant impact and turned to Green-tech for advice. Green-tech suggested and supplied their 36 1.8m x 1.2m Ivy Green Screens, which are ideal where an instant privacy green fence is required. They are simply inserted into the ground without the requirement for pot or planter and they have specially selected growing media which contains controlled release fertiliser and wetting agents to aid rapid establishment. Ian Davis, Contracts Manager from Kings Landscapes comments: “The installation went well. Fresh topsoil was installed and trenches dug ready so the installation was quick and easy. The location was next to a balancing pond so the operatives had to wear harnesses, lanyards and life jackets to ensure their safety during the installation. The screens are very effective and we would definitely use them again.
Biotecture serves an ace at Wimbledon Green infrastructure company, Biotecture, has won a Living Walls Installations Award from the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) for its striking green walls which delighted players and visitors at The Championships, Wimbledon 2019. Biotecture, whose ethos is reconnecting people with nature, designed the living walls with The All England Lawn Tennis Club to bring an English garden feel to the façade of the No.1 Court, while also improving biodiversity and air quality. The sustainable walls, positioned either side of the Big Screen on the Hill, consist of 14,344 purple, green and white plants, arranged in a wave design to illustrate the movement of a tennis ball being hit. Biotecture’s progressive hydroponic system directs the water straight to the rootzone of the plants, maintaining them with precisely the right amount of water required and ensuring none is wasted. “We’re absolutely delighted to win this Award from BALI. Our project with The All England Lawn Tennis Club perfectly demonstrates how plants can support biodiversity, create cleaner air and lift people’s moods. We’ll continue to work with the team over the coming months to ensure the walls look just as fabulous for next year’s Championships,” says
Richard Sabin, Biotecture’s Managing Director. BALI Chairman John Melmoe adds: “It was interesting to see this year how companies, corporations and international sports venues are embracing the use of plant material to assist with the improvement of air quality and the lowering of their carbon footprint.” Biotecture has worked on a number of high-profile projects this year, including the first UK highways living walls scheme in Southampton, Terminal 3 at Heathrow Airport, One Bank Street in Canary Wharf and one of the world's largest living walls at McArthurGlen’s Ashford Designer Outlet.

Power to Pellenc Battery power equipment is playing a big part in Scottish company Inverallan Landscapes’ decision have turned to Pellenc tools to help them in their quest to be more environmentally friendly. According to Managing Director John Maxwell battery equipment is the way forward and the company have made a big conscious decision to be greener. “We run quite a variety of battery equipment and Pellenc is a big part of that – it’s easy to use, you don’t have any maintenance and there is a huge saving on fuel,” he explains. Light, odourless, relatively noise-free, with no starting problems and no refilling the fuel tank, Pellenc has gained market recognition by offering a unique range of ‘zero emission’ battery-powered handheld tools, thanks to the development of Lithium-ion ultra-high performance batteries. This technology, which is exclusive to Pellenc, guarantees non-polluting with quick start-up and long lasting battery life. The team at Inverallan Landscapes have reported fantastic results from using the Helion 2 Compact hedge trimmer, the lightest battery-powered hedge trimmer on the market. Designed to meet the needs of professionals, the Helion allows the user to work comfortably when trimming hedges, ornamental trees and can also be used for pruning. Furthermore, to reach areas that may be a stretch, John and his team rely on the Pellenc Helion extendable pole model. John also revealed that his most recent Pellenc addition, the Cleanion battery-powered brush, proved to be the

town’s saviour when the Beast from the East struck last year. “Here in Stirling we have the National Wallace Monument accessed by a steep road. A mini bus transports tourists to the monument, but when the bus couldn’t get up there because of the snow I used the Cleanion to clear the way.” The Pellenc Cleanion battery-powered brush is ideal for removing debris from natural and artificial grass and other hard surfaces, and the snow blade attachment is an added bonus for wintery conditions. However, in John’s case, he didn’t have the snow attachment at the time so he proceeded in clearing the snow leading up to the monument with the standard brush! “It was the battery factor which attracted me to the Cleanion and the fact that I can use the same battery on this machine as well as other tools in the Pellenc range.” Pellenc products are exclusively distributed in the UK by Etesia UK.

which transforms a C or B Series garden tractor into a multi-use, year-round workhorse. The PGC+ is a cassette system which allows the operator to quickly switch accessories, each one designed for a specific garden task. The Grass Sweeper cassette comes as standard. Click it into place and fifty-one brushes rotate at over 1100rpm to sweep grass clippings, fallen leaves and other debris into the hopper, even when the grass is wet. Installing the Scarifier cassette into the PGC+ reduces the need for a separate scarifier. The easy-to-insert cassette makes light work of scarifying and takes considerably less time than using a walk-behind machine, as scarifying and collection of the debris is done simultaneously. Considerable financial savings can be made using the PGC+, as there is no requirement to buy separate, standalone equipment. Additional cassettes are coming shortly, including a Hard Surface Brush cassette.
