Chelsea 2015 Landstruction - Dark Matter Garden
Chelsea how was it for you ? by Carol Dutton The greatest flower show on earth, beamed into millions of homes, discussed, analyzed and admired is over for another year. But what of the landscapers who create the show gardens just to take them down again six days later? Notoriously difficult access, immovable deadlines, 16 hour days coupled with sometimes unreliable deliveries and scant media coverage, not to mention the weather, why do they do it, how do they do it and is it all worth it? “Chelsea has helped my career,” says Jody Lidgard, whose company Bespoke Outdoor Spaces built ‘Urban Retreat’, the Homebase garden designed by Adam Frost that took a gold medal. “Show gardens are our business. We’ve travelled to Moscow and Japan but for me Chelsea is important and it’s important we get gold. It’s the biggest job interview you’ll ever have and every day’s a school day. I’d never assume I’d arrived.” Jody started dressing nursery stands in the Great Pavilion before meeting Chris Beardshaw at BBC Gardeners World Live in 2006. The two hit it off instantly and Jody’s future business began. “If you’re consistent and keep your nerve people notice and word gets round,” he continues. Faced with the construction of a large Chelsea show garden, Jody looks at it back to front. “Mentally I’ll take on the project from the breakdown first. How are we going to get out? We’ve got four days to break down and 18 to 20 days to build. I’ll keep a Landstruction - Dark Matter Garden

the show working around two days a week,” he says. “The first thing we look at is the logistics of delivering what the designer’s after. Sometimes we’ll do the technical drawings and we need to find out if the design is feasible and suggest solutions. There are a lot of meetings with the client and for this garden we had discussions with specialists we work with all the time. We needed a water engineer, laser cut metal work and specialist fabrication. All the arches were prefabricated.” The Outdoor Room has built one garden at Chelsea this year as opposed to three in 2014, followed by a garden at Hampton Court, but the company was working with a new designer. “This was Kamelia’s

We had two engineering firms dealing with the steel structures. The oculus wall, starburst floor and seating came out of one company, while the other firm dealt with the light box at the opposite end of the garden supplying light rays that gave us a block of colour. We did a bit of dry build before the show to make sure that some of the

of Groundsmanship (IOG) conferences. A packed timetable will see three dedicated seminar theatres, featuring programmes running from 10am through to 3.30pm each day of the show. With the full timetable set to be released soon, the IOG has provided a glimpse of what to expect. The seminar theatre next to the IOG Hub on the show floor will feature sports turf management panel debates with high-profile industry professionals taking centre stage. SALTEX visitors will be able to learn from those tasked with preparing the pitches for some of the world’s major international sports events such as this year’s Ashes and the Rugby World Cup. While visitors with interests in fine turf and a variety of sports surfaces will be able to choose from a range of informative seminar sessions presented by some of the industry’s national and international experts. Two further theatres will feature dedicated seminars relevant to those working in the school, play, amenity, parks, arboriculture and forestry environments. The Parks Alliance will give an update on the state and future of the nation’s parks and green spaces, while other sessions will include an update on industry groundscare regulations, a question and answer session on pests and diseases while the inspection and safety standards in the play industry will be explored. For young people looking to advance their career in the groundscare industry, the Rigby Taylor/Top Green Young Groundsmen’s Conference, organised by the IOG’s Young Board of Directors, will offer information on educational

Rob Bradshaw, head groundsman at One Leisure sports centre in St Ives, passes his knowledge onto local volunteer workers on a weekly basis through various seminars and knows first-hand just how important education is to the future of the industry. “It’s great that the IOG are paying a lot of attention to the education provision at SALTEX this year. The NEC, being at the centre of England, will give visitors from all over the country an opportunity to learn from both the event exhibitors and industry experts at these sessions. Many of the sector’s biggest names have signed up to the show -- many of which have taken large stands to launch new products,” he said. Previous SALTEX exhibitions have always been held in the month of September but the new November date has certainly played a part in the influx of exhibitors. SALTEX 2015 will now be outside of a September events congestion which sees other exhibitions such as Four Oaks, GaLaBau and Demo Dagen taking place.

Hammer Time on Hard Surfaces Hammer, a total herbicide from Everris which delivers effective weed control, has received approval to be used on hard surfaces by The Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD). With an increasing amount of pressure being put on landscape contractors and amenity professionals to keep their sites weed-free, Hammer is the number one choice for those wishing to see immediate results and an end to their weed invasion. Hammer’s war on weeds is now set to become more ferocious after the CRD approved it for use on hard surfaces – meaning that it can now be used on a much wider scale. The unique formulation was developed and fine-tuned in-house by scientists who made sure the two actives worked in synergy, creating a product which gives a quick knockdown from the pyraflufen-ethyl, whilst still allowing the glyphosate to move systemically through the plant. Hammer was then put

Fixing gets smart Trade professionals looking for a better way of fixing decking now have a new solution to their needs thanks to ForgeFix. The business, which ranks as one of the UK’s leading distributors of fixings, fastenings and associated products such as telescopic ladders and drill bits, has recently enhanced its TorxFast range. This range already includes a number of intelligently designed woodscrews which ForgeFix markets as smarter fixing technology thanks to their innovative capabilities. Now, a choice of larger screws which display similar levels of technical innovation and which have been designed specifically for decking fixing applications is also available. Mike Smith, sales and marketing director at the business, told The Landscaper. “As a company, ForgeFix prides itself on offering innovative and value-adding solutions to common fixing and fastening challenges. “It’s this focus which led to the initial introduction of TorxFast – a brand of screw which brings together a range of cleverly engineered features never before encountered in the
of utilising intelligent design and the latest technological

technology. More commonly found on high speed twist drills, this technology has been developed to ensure a faster and more efficient insertion into a wide range of substrates. In addition, the shank removes rather than displaces the swarf created by the screw’s insertion. As a result, TorxFast decking screws enable fixing much closer to the edge of the substrate with less risk of splitting. This issue can be a real and repeat problem with hardwood decking. TorxFast decking screws also employ a partial thread which helps to reduce ‘jacking’ when used in timber-to-timber fixing applications as a well as a green RUSPERT® corrosion resistant surface treatment. This ultra-durable finish provides weatherbeating performance that has been salt spray tested to an impressive 1000 hours.

Further benefits include a high pull out value when used in timber that flexes or moves though use such as under regular foot traffic or because of changes in environmental conditions like temperature or moisture levels. Plus, like all products within the TorxFast range, the new decking screws have a Torx head which enables a firmer drive as well as higher torque levels to be achieved with a reduced risk of cam-out. Every box of TorxFast decking screw also includes a free Torx bit. Six TorxFast decking screw sizes are available - 4.5 x 50mm, 4.5 x 60mm, 4.5 x 75mm, 5.0 x 100mm, 5.0 x 120mm and 6.0 x 150mm.

Free-of-charge seminar Barcham Trees’ latest free-of-charge seminar was tailored to the interests of garden designers and led by Amanda Patton, who has been designing for private and commercial clients since 2000, with 160 gardens to her credit. Her company Amanda Patton Landscape & Garden Design was a natural progression from the 20 years she had previously spent as a professional illustrator following a degree in Textile Design, which developed her appreciation of colour, touch and texture. Looking back to her childhood, she told delegates that having been good at both art and mathematics at school, and with a love of the natural world, the seeds of becoming a landscape designer were sown early in her life. Her career began as an archaeological illustrator, drawing items such as Neolithic flints and pieces of pottery, which called for precise, detailed work. Amanda especially likes creating semi-naturalistic plantings, employing perennial plants and grasses chosen for their ability to catch light and create good textural combinations when not in flower. Trees, hedges and clipped forms of box, yew and beech also figure structurally in her designs. After lunch and the opportunity to network, delegates were given a tour of Barcham’s extensive 350-acre nursery, which has more than 200,000 trees and is the largest container tree nursery in Europe. www.amandapatton.co.uk Pedestrian stump grinders Tunnissen products Blue Chip Chippas Beau products Full technical support & after sales service

Achieving economic and environmental sustainability when supplying customers in the south of England has always been a challenge for the company, with the majority their best-selling products requiring transport to and from the main site in Derbyshire. Managing Director Trevor Broadhurst told The Landscaper “The acquisition of Romney Holdings is a strategic investment for us to expand our presence in the South of England. The additional facilities will provide valuable storage and acquired a new dock and storage facility site Rye, Kent. The acquisition comes as part of Long Rake Spar’s long term expansion strategy, which has previously seen the company move from strength to strength as a supplier to an extensive range of industry sectors. garden. The decline of the British front lawn has seen an increasing amount of homeowners turn from green to grey over the last decade however LazyLawn is encouraging gardeners to choose a brighter alternative to paving. Research for the Royal Horticultural Society has shown the number of British gardeners replacing their traditional front garden with gravel or paving, has tripled over the last 10 years*. LazyLawn is supporting the call for homeowners to bring back the British front lawn and to reverse their dull and gloomy paved front gardens, but with a low maintenance, hassle-free alternative. The report showed that 24% of front gardens were either partially or wholly covered in an assortment of paving, bricks, tarmac and concrete. More than a quarter - 28% of people polled said there was no greenery at all in their front gardens. A typical suburban property some 50 years ago with a wellspruced front garden, would’ve been judged by neighbours on the street, all competing for the ‘kerb appeal’. But with an increase of cars on the roads and busy family life taking priority, people have since looked for a low maintenance alternative, avoiding the weekly mowing chore. Unlike LazyLawn, paving has come with its environmental set-backs and has increased the risk of flash-flooding over the years. Andy Driver, Marketing Director at LazyLawn, told The

The company, fresh from celebrating their 25-year anniversary, remain committed to the specialist supply of trees, hedging plants and planting accessories into the UK forestry, farming and landscaping markets. Nick joined the leading hedging supplier’s team in 2014 from a sales role within the UK forestry and timber industry and his promotion comes less than a year after joining the 10-strong team at British Hardwood Trees. Initially focusing on building new partnerships and maintaining and developing existing relationships within their supply network, Nick’s role has been extended to take on board a broader operational perspective. Nick spoke of his appointment and is “excited and keen to take on this prominent position within a company at the forefront of its field.” He continued “Taking on the operational side of the business, I can explore a broader reach of strategies to improve our processes for the ultimate benefit of our UK customer base.”

The 23-year-old will liaise with the sales and production teams at the company to define areas to investigate and innovate. Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “I would like to congratulate Ben on his promotion. “Within his role Ben will investigate methods of adding value by the evaluation of new stock to the nursery and different ways of presenting current lines and ranges to our customers in the amenity and retail sectors. “It is a new and really exciting role within the company and will be critical in our drive to stay as market leaders in product development and innovation.” Ben, who has a degree in Horticulture, explained: “I am really excited to start trialling new and improved varieties to develop, progress and modernise our range to bring to market.” “I hope to help lead Wyevale to the forefront of the industry to become known for our new, exciting and exclusive plant offers.” The gt Specifier team has expanded with the arrival of FRANCIS PETERS, a history graduate from York St John University who joins as Specification Assistant. Francis will be assisting and supporting the team with research and analysis projects which include sourcing information on upcoming and ongoing landscaping projects and estimating project costs. gt Specifier is the specification arm of leading landscape supplier Green-tech; working with landscape architects and specifiers to offer technical support, advice and solutions for landscaping projects. Green-tech now boasts a team of 50 and continues to go from strength to strength. The number of product lines it offers and stock holding capabilities make it one of the largest landscape suppliers in the UK. Greentech is currently building a purpose made £3 million complex to house their expanding business which includes the growing gt Specifier team. When not working, history-mad Francis pursues his passion by visiting castles and battlefields. Whilst he’s enjoying his time at Green-tech, one day he’d love to run a museum. Francis comments, “I’m really enjoying working at Green-tech with the gt Specifier team, especially the research element and speaking with architects about forthcoming projects. I find it fascinating that they are creating buildings and landscapes that will stand for a long time - they are creating history.” For more information on gtSpecifier visit www.gtspecifier.co.uk
