Cash-strapped and coping The recession may be officially over but councils are still having their budgets cut leaving little left for our public parks, gardens, and open spaces, yet public awareness of the importance of green space especially in our cities has never been greater. Interestingly he cites an urban de-cluttering exercise that FM Conway undertook at Earls Court. “We removed all the highway signs including the white central road lines and the number of accidents reduced,” he recalls, “although it takes a bit of courage for a council to pursue this type of policy.” This is a question for another debate and meanwhile, round-

spaces, ‘Voluntary sector involvement.’ Streatham Common Cooperative (SCCoop), which grew out of Friends of Streatham Common and is currently supported by Lambeth council, took over the management of the ‘Rookery’ a formal landscaped area earlier this year, with volunteers helping to maintain horticulture and wildlife. Although the group recently won a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, London Councils, who represent all 33 London local authorities warn that the future of London parks is at risk as boroughs may soon be unable to support groups such as these and, due to government cuts, the capital could be sliding towards privately run parks by the end of the decade. Perhaps this would take another of CABE’s eight models for funding green spaces, ‘Income –generating opportunities’ too far for comfort. Sponsorship of round-a-bouts, albeit with potentially distracting advertising, is one thing, while Jim Ranger, media officer of London Councils’ horror of (sometime in the future) taking his young son to his local park only to find the gates shut due to a private function, is quite another. In contrast, Enfield Council, one of the 13 London Boroughs who don’t employ contractors, doesn’t rely on volunteers either, despite the fact that they are responsible for 124 open spaces covering 920 hectares. Asked about the maintenance, Laura Berryman, Press and New Media Officer said “this is an ‘in-house’ service. Although we do not rely on volunteers, nonetheless the council welcomes the significant support that they provide. There are 150-200 volunteers who help clear paths, plant

It is rainfast in just one hour and the take up to the plant is much improved. It is also very safe so we can be confident about COSHH assessments.” Highly effective in challenging conditions, Roundup ProBio makes the best use of application windows for greater efficiency. It also offers enhanced stewardship features including new low drift properties. Roundup ProBio’s formulation features patented technology utilising 360g ai/litre of glyphosate acid as the potassium salt and two surfactants to deliver optimum efficacy and enhanced stewardship. Synthetic pitch requirements

Falkirk FC’s stadium head groundsman Joe Wallace relies on a range of SISIS products specifically built to fulfil synthetic pitch requirements. “We use the SISIS SSS1000 – a tractor mounted sweeper which can be pulled by any machine. There are no tools required for the adjustment of the brush or the angle of the draw bar and to make storage easy the draw bar lifts to an upright position. With an aluminium hopper with stainless steel mesh, any infill that is collected when using the machine is returned back down to the surface leaving it free from contamination of debris. “We get a lot of debris on the pitch after concerts and because we have so many children playing on the pitch we find a lot of bottle tops and other things like that which contaminate the pitch. We use the SSS1000 twice a week to keep the surface nice and clean and it stops the actual crumb from getting contaminated.” As well as the SISIS SSS1000, Joe uses the SISIS Twinplay tractor mounted implement frame, which can be fitted with several implements for the maintenance of synthetic surfaces. He attaches the SISIS straight brush and the SISIS Zig Zag brush to even out the rubber crumb before attaching the SISIS Flexicomb. The Flexicomb maintains infill levels at a constant depth to give a consistent playing characteristic and Joe believes it is perfect for the surface at the Falkirk Stadium.

There are roughly 3 trillion trees on Earth — more than seven times the number previously estimated — according to a tally by an international team of scientists. The study also finds that human activity is detrimental to tree abundance worldwide. Around 15 billion trees are cut down each year, the researchers estimate; since the onset of agriculture about 12,000 years ago, the number of trees worldwide has dropped by 46%.

population, about 400 billion, was based mostly on satellite imagery. Although remote imaging reveals a lot about where forests are, it does not provide the same level of resolution that a person counting trunks would achieve. Crowther and his colleagues merged these approaches by first gathering data for every continent except Antarctica from various existing ground-based counts covering about 430,000 hectares. These counts allowed them to improve tree-density estimates from satellite imagery. Then the researchers applied those density estimates to areas that lack good ground inventories. For example, survey data from forests in Canada and northern Europe were used to revise estimates from satellite imagery for similar forests in remote parts of Russia. The highest tree densities, calculated in stems per hectare, were found in the boreal forests of North America, Scandinavia

National Conifer Week Low maintenance, attractive forms and all year round colour are just a few of the benefits that the conifer can bring to the garden. Such is its popularity across the nation, the conifer has been attributed its own week as well as being the Horticultural Trades Association’s (HTA) Plant of the Month for October. National Conifer Week, organised by the British Conifer Group (BCG), takes place on Saturday 26 September running until Saturday 3 October. Retailers are encouraged to inspire their customers upon the many benefits of growing conifers in the garden. If not already a feature of a garden, a conifer can regularly be found to be one’s neighbour. Whether planted in a container on a balcony, in a domestic garden or featured in acres of grounds, conifers can work as a backdrop, standalone, or in a border with other plants. They are extremely versatile, coming in an amazingly diverse range of shades, textures, shapes and sizes. Recommended RHS AGM varieties include: Picea abies ‘Acrocona’ Larix decidua ‘Puli’ Thuja plicata ‘Atrovirens’

Flowers business is blooming A record crop of orders for hanging baskets and street planters from councils all over the UK resulted in the

standing five-tier Flower Tower planters, which measure up to eight feet tall, for Blackburn in Lancashire. The figure compares to 10,000 for 2014 and the increased orders meant that the company ran out of all of its planters, which are made from tough polypropylene and contain a hidden water reservoir to enable once-a-week watering. To meet its obligations – which also included three late orders all received in one week and together worth a combined £32,000 - it had to manufacture an extra 240 individual planters at short notice, before planting them up and delivering them in time to give a summer-long display. Plantscape was founded nearly 20 years ago and Mark

activity down to an increased sales drive and existing customers increasing their orders to meet the public’s demand for floral displays. “We had a bumper summer this year, with a significant increase in activity for both for our plant-up and our maintenance operations, which resulted in an unprecedented volume of orders for new planter stocks and the plants themselves. “As well as a number of new clients, it has been extremely noticeable how a number of long-standing customers have

Horticulture added to their orders this year, with many requesting that we maintain them too. “Many organisations are still having to balance their budgets but where possible they are finding the money for floral displays, simply because they are a quick and easy way to make areas more attractive for visitors and are always one of the first things that people request when they are asked for ideas on how councils can make improvements to their communities.”

Speaking of his new role, Alan said: “Kelkay has a clear focus and an ambitious strategy. To get directly involved with the growth of this business was a key factor for me.
