200th Edition Welcome to the 200th edition of The Landscaper. A warm thank you to all our readers and advertisers for their continued support and encouragement. When most people talk of infrastructure they are usually referring to roads, water, electricity and gas. There is a new kid on the block - Green Infrastructure. Vegetation in towns and cities should be considered a delivery vehicle of essential services in the same way. Air pollution has now reached extremely dangerous levels in many areas of the UK. Vegetation can remove air pollutants such as particulates and gasses. Professor John Dover puts forward a powerful case for increasing expenditure in this area to keep our land
green and pleasant - as well as improving the air we breathe (p24). IOG SALTEX has moved from Windsor to the NEC - a bold positive move. Our special preview feature (p29) spotlights just some of the stands worth a visit at this most important trade show. The Landscaper team will be at the exhibition in force - please do visit our stand K190 and pass on any news, views, scandal or gossip. It really does feel as though winter is about to descend. Our special feature (p46) will be helpful, especially if you are contracted to keep footpaths roads or playgrounds safe. Have a good month.
Complete range of solutions John Deere will be represented at SALTEX 2015 by regional dealers Farol, Henton & Chattell, Tallis Amos Group (TAG) and Turner Groundscare. The joint display will feature models from the company’s comprehensive range of commercial ride-on and walk-behind mowers, compact tractors and Gator utility vehicles. Green Infrastructure Delivers! A report published in 2011 by Treeconomics showed that Torbay’s ‘urban forest’ of 818,000 trees removed about 50 tonnes of air pollution a year. Vegetation reduces air pollution and cools the air. John Dover makes the case for major green development.

Schools shut under a cloud of diesel The Sunday Times 28th June 2015
It seems unlikely that many people are now unaware that vehicle exhaust, especially from diesel vehicles, can affect human health. Whilst particulate pollution from exhausts has been the main focus of media attention in the past, the recent emissions scandal that has engulfed Volkswagen is about gasses: nitrogen oxides. Within urban areas air pollution is a killer and linked to premature death from a range of factors including respiratory and cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, strokes and cancer. Very fine particles can get deep into the lungs, enter the bloodstream and lodge in major organs such as the liver and kidney. One recent study estimated that in 2010 about 3.15 million people across the world died prematurely due

to air pollution with particulates that were 2.5 microns or below in diameter (one micron (μm) is one thousandth of a millimetre) – an invisible and silent killer. With more and more people choosing to live in cities, it is important that health risks from air pollution are minimised. But cities have other environmental problems as well. Urban areas are warmer than the surrounding countryside (the Urban Heat Island Effect). Another major problem is flash flooding. Because there are relatively large areas of ‘sealed surface’ (tarmac, concrete, buildings) in urban areas, when it rains there is often nowhere for the water to ‘soak-in’. As a result, when we get heavy storms the sewers get overloaded. Add on noise pollution, light pollution, and reduced access to greenspace, and it is easy to see that stress levels can rise and mental health suffer.
Feature
of removing particulates – though some species will be better at it than others. A report published in 2011 by Treeconomics showed that Torbay’s ‘urban forest’ of 818,000 trees removed about 50 tonnes of air pollution a year. Earlier this year it was reported by A.P.R. Jeanjean and colleagues that trees in Leicester reduced vehicle-related air pollution by 7%. What else can vegetation do? Anyone who has stood under a tree in leaf to avoid the rain knows that you are drier under the tree than in the open, but also if you stay there after it has finished raining you will start to get wet. This is one of the reasons why vegetation can be considered to be part of Sustainable Urban Drainage systems (SUDs). Vegetation captures rainwater, holds on to it for a while and then releases it slowly. By slowing the flow of water to the ground, vegetation helps to reduce flash floods – easing the burden on sewers in times of heavy rainfall. Increasingly, features such as green roofs are being promoted as components of SUDs – they act in the same way a tree does. In Portland, Oregon, rain gardens have been created at the ends of roads and in pavements to capture water from the gutters before it can get to the sewers – so new green areas are created which, at the same time, perform an essential service as SUDs. Vegetation looks nice. A simplistic statement, but well

and feel of an area. It can also be used to hide ugly features and will cover, and may prevent, graffiti. But aesthetic improvements
- unfortunately it didn’t work. Low-emission zones and pollution charging are mooted. France had a ‘car free day’ in Paris on the 27th September – but it was a Sunday, and vehicles were not excluded from the whole of the city. Wonderful, but not a viable long-term solution. In the short to medium term, for me, there is only one game in town: and that is more vegetation. We all know what essential infrastructure is: roads, sewers, water, electricity, gas. But it is becoming increasingly apparent that there is a new kid on the block: Green Infrastructure. Vegetation in towns and cities should be considered a delivery vehicle of essential services in the same way that other infrastructure is. But what are these services? Well let’s start with air pollution: we have known for some time that vegetation can remove air pollutants such as particulates and gasses. Most work has been done on trees, but most vegetation is probably capable

‘MENTAL WELLBEING IS PROMOTED BY GREENERY’ Vegetation also provides wildlife habitat and this restorative value of nature probably extends to the value of soundscapes, watching wildlife, and the other sensory inputs such as smell and the play of light on leaves. Vegetation can also help block light and noise pollution. The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, whereby cities generate their own climate, brings its own problems – it amplifies the effect of pollution, but it also makes towns and cities uncomfortably warm especially on summer nights. As with flash-flooding, part of the problem is the reduced amount of vegetation in cities and the large amount of sealed surface. The latter holds heat longer than vegetation. Urban areas with tall buildings also have a reduced ‘sky view’ which reduces the amount of open air available for cooling. When you combine the impact of the Urban Heat Island with the expected effects from climate change we could be in real trouble. An increase in average temperatures of a couple of degrees Celsius or so does not sound very bad, but that is an average, and it will bring with it increased frequency of extreme events – including heatwaves. An estimated 40,000 people died in Europe in 2003 due to
summer heatwaves; in nine days in July 2013 it was estimated that as many as 760 people died from heat-related illness in the UK. Vegetation can reduce air pollution, it cools the air, it can reduce the UHI and flash flooding, it could help combat climate change effects – but it is not easy to create new green spaces in densely packed urban areas where land is at a premium. In the past green infrastructure was seen as almost exclusively a network of high quality green spaces. This view has become modified, over time, to embrace a wider range of features such as green roofs, green walls, street trees and even permeable pavements. Essentially, these features allow us to modify the sealed surface of urban areas without changing their original function.
‘IN NINE DAYS IN JULY 2013 IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT AS MANY AS 760 PEOPLE DIED FROM HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS IN THE UK’. An office building with a green roof and living walls is still an office building – but its contribution to reducing the environmental problems is considerably improved. A car park which has an open concrete weave with grass growing in it is still a car park – but it is less likely to contribute to flash flooding

In this preview we have featured some of the stands we consider essential to visit. The Landscaper team will be there in force so please make a point of visiting our stand (K190). Avant Tecno (UK) will unveil a completely new, ultracompact tool carrier designed with the landscaping industry in mind. Despite its diminutive size, this new machine will be equipped with many of the features found as standard across the Finnish company’s range of machines. Weighing less than 1000 kg, the new machine will be easy to transport on a small trailer and will be ideal for a multitude of tasks, particularly wherever space is at a premium. Besides examples of the larger models in the Avant range, the stand will also contain some of the latest attachments to join the 150 plus choice including a new collector mower and a re-designed edge trimmer that can be swung to either side of the machine to which it is fitted. What is different about the CRX concept is it combines three mowers into one, offering for the first time a range of truly professional fine turf mowers with a full width rollers front and rear, a finishing mower with four fully castoring wheels, or a combination of the two, all in one machine. Used as a finishing mower the secret of the superb cut is in the extremely high blade tip speed, producing a finish equal to that of a roller mower. What’s more, the CRX MultiCut mowers can be front or rear mounted, with side or rear discharge and the option of mulching. All this is achieved without compromise, producing a quality cut and leaving the turf looking its best. The CRX is available in 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.4m widths with the options of front or rear mounting, side or rear discharge. Rural tree planting Glendale Civic Trees who specialise in the supply, plant and relocation of trees has undertaken the creation of a Parkland for a private client in Gloucestershire. They were called in to create a Parkland of trees and shrubs in the grounds of a large private home. Overall ground conditions were not ideal with underlying rock found close to the surface in many places. Green-tech supplied the anchoring system for the trees. The larger trees were all semi mature with a 45cm plus girth which required securing with three and four legged anchors.

Press Release FORMPAVE MEETS HIGH WATER QUALITY STANDARDS Two high profile projects in Guernsey have used Formpave’s permeable paving and Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) to help meet the island’s high pollution control and surface water requirements. SUDS aims to help prevent flooding by replicating natural systems and processes to drain surface water run-off in a controlled way. This is done through collection, storage and cleaning before the water is slowly released back, either into the watercourses or directly into the ground. It has been used at Les Beaucamps High School and a development of 40 homes on the site of the former Guernsey Grammar school for Boys. Both schemes also incorporated EcoGranite, which is one of the most sustainable permeable paving options on the market. It contains up to 77 per cent recycled materials and is an environmentally-friendly alternative

to the use of freshly quarried granite. John Lloyd, Formpave’s head of design, said: “Following years of research by Coventry University, our Aquaflow system is the default SUDS specified in Guernsey. The system exceeds the island’s rigorous pollution controls on surface water and also meets local government’s requirements of handling a one in 20 year storm. “Our aim is to provide a high quality system and solution to suit any requirement. To help with this we offer a comprehensive free design service which includes technical and professional advice, preparation of draft proposals and validation of the clients’ own designs.” Established in 1989, Formpave is a world-leading authority on permeable paving, and is part of Forterra (formerly Hanson Building Products), one of the leading providers of building products in the country.

Pioneering nurseries
One of the UK’s largest and pioneering forest & landscape nurseries have today announced the next step in their continued expansion after acquiring additional land adjacent to their current facility. Cheviot Trees specialise in producing cell grown & jumbo plug plants for the forestry, landscaping & agricultural sectors. The company now supplies many million plants per year to clients throughout the UK & Europe. Earthworks are currently underway to prepare the site for the installation of a further sophisticated greenhouse complex and associated equipment – all of which will be state of the art, to maximise efficiency and produce the consistent high quality product which Cheviot Trees prides itself in.
Rainbow Plants specialises in the production of hardy nursery stock in pots from 1.5L up to “instant gardening” specimens in 250L pots. It’s a one stop service for landscapers and commercial clients looking for evergreen or deciduous shrubs and trees. We can also source roses, herbaceous plants, climbers and conifers from specialist nurseries that we work with and larger specimens from Italy.
Grown in Devon for South West conditions.
Mr Harry Frew, founder and Managing Director says: “The acquisition of additional land, adjacent to our existing production facility, will greatly assist our continued expansion. The combination of our progressive growth & a specific increase in the species and seed sources that we are now being asked for has presented our team with real challenges. UK forestry

Giant tree ferns arrive
‘The Great British Hedge’ A nursery in Hereford is campaigning for the benefits of ‘The Great British Hedge.’ Wyevale Nurseries has started an initiative to promote the benefits of the British hedge to the horticultural retail and amenity and landscaping sectors. Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “Hedges are natures fences – natural boundary markers, privacy givers and security providers. Not only do they work for us, they also make a living corridor for birds and animals, offering nesting and food throughout the year. “Hedges have been used as field boundaries in England since the times of the Romans and we feel Britain and its patchwork of hedges are iconic. We want to see them continue to flourish. “There are many benefits to hedges for example walls or a fence will only divert wind, whereas a hedge filters and calms it, improving air circulation and forming sheltered microclimates for other plants to grow. Hedges can also be planted for sound proofing and to absorb air pollution. They are ideal for use near busy roads or in industrial areas. “The best hedges are planned. Knowing what to plant and where to put it can make a significant difference to the initial

Helen Kinghorn, Pershore College Director said, “It’s fantastic to see the first plants being delivered into the Collections House, especially as they are spectacular tree ferns, so I hope as many people as possible come along to the open day to see for themselves. We’re looking forward to welcoming many more plants over the next few weeks and months, including some donated from RHS Wisley.”

She says: “I am most fortunate to become President at a time of ambition and positivity in the Society. We want to embed a culture of woodland management and the enjoyment of woods, through the Teaching Treesprogramme with children, through Future Foresters building the next professional generation and through Wise About Woods for all of us engaged with managing woodlands.

For the past twelve months; Mark has utilised his industry experience by working on various consultancy projects and when the opportunity to join Everris came along he felt that it was just too good to turn down.
