Seasonal thoughts We noted some strong feedback on social media about Professor John Dover’s feature in last month’s edition ‘Green infrastructure delivers.’ Everyone seems to agree that greening up our towns and cities is the way to combat pollution from vehicles. In fact many suggest that we restrict vehicles from entering our cities and grass over most of the roads, leaving open a few strategic routes for bikes, buses, cabs and essential vehicles. We would save billions on health care and road maintenance and we would make our green and pleasant land a healthier, happier place. One step we can take to improve health is to consider the fuel we use for our machinery, you will find (p24) fuel for thought. The IOG Saltex show moved from Windsor to the NEC in Birmingham. By all accounts it was a great success. If you were not able to make it to the NEC you will be interested in our special show report (p27). The New Year will start of course with the BIGGA Harrogate show in January. There is a massive amount planned and it will be well worth a visit (p38).

As you can see from this month’s picture I have already walked in deep snow. It’s on the way here and our winter feature is a good guide to some of the services and kit that could be purchased (p43). All that remains is to wish our readers and advertisers the compliments of the season and a successful 2016 . See you in January.
Launched at Saltex The all-new Wessex ProLine CRX-410 is a trailed tri-deck multi-cut mower which has exceptional ground contour following capabilities. The three decks are available with the option of four castoring wheels, for maximum manoeuvrability, front and rear rollers to leave a prestigious banded effect on fine turf, or a combination allowing longer grass to be tackled effectively. The CRX has a blade tip speed similar to that of the Wessex RMX roller mowers, allowing an equivalent cut quality on fine turf, while the Tornado-Vents system ensures the correct airflow through the machine for a premium cut and clipping dispersal. Undulating golf courses present no problems to the CRX-410 as the independent floating decks allow ground contours to be followed closely and accurately. The Wessex Tight-Turn feature ensures an exceptionally tight turning capability meaning trees, goal posts and other obstacles can be negotiated with ease. The mower has a generous 4.1m
cutting width and can be operated behind tractors with only 35 plus horse power. The convenient ‘Pro-Lift’ feature allows the decks to be raised quickly and easily when negotiating kerbs, roadways and paths. The adjustable drawbar suits all tractors and the wide angle PTO enables the tight turning circle. Maintenance is easy with all spindles greasable above the deck, while wheel height adjustment is by removable bushes. The rollers are adjusted by a simple screw thread mechanism. There are wide turf tyres for minimal ground compaction and the patented linkage allows the rear deck to follow the direction of travel for minimal turf scuffing. Suspension offers smooth travel and safety catches on all decks provide security in transport, with a highway kit of mud guards and rear lights available. Fast, nimble and versatile the CRX-410 is ideal for golf course fairways, rough and semi-rough as well as sports turf and general amenity applications. Greenest football team For the last five years, Forest Green Rovers’ mission has been to become the greenest football team in the world. In fact everything about the club says green, from its name to its club strip to the idyllic rolling hills of the Cotswolds that provide a back drop to the club’s stadium in the Gloucestershire town of Nailsworth. Sustainability can be found in every corner of The New Lawn Stadium; you will find no red meat at the concession stands, solar panels power the stadium, a battery powered robot mows the pitch - and it is this organic pitch that Complete Weed Control have been assigned to keep in pristine condition. Matt Rainey, head groundsman at Forest Green Rovers FC, is no stranger to Complete Weed Control. Matt has worked with the company for over a decade and when he landed the head groundsman’s position at Forest Green Rovers, one of his first decisions was to bring Complete Weed Control on-board. “The decision to bring Compete Weed Control over to Forest Green Rovers was a no brainer really. Husqvarna have also launched launched a new battery backpack blower. Do not dismiss battery power as it will be a part of your future, make no mistake. A GPS receptor positioned on the pitch talks to the onboard computer via Bluetooth, which triangulates Swozi’s position with help from its own GPS unit, directing the linemarking machine to the appropriate line selected. Deviation from the marking map by even a few millimetres triggers the head to adjust to maintain an accurate line. If the machine moves too far out of correct alignment, the computer tells the linemarker to stop spraying until the operator positions the machine to the correct marking pattern. SALTEX 2015 The new bright red Branson’s Tractors attracted a great deal of attention at this year’s show.

Founded in 1968, Kukje manufacture 20,000 tractors per year which they sell thoughout the world. The tractors come with a complete range of attachments & accessories plus, 2 years’ warranty, UK based parts distribution and subsidised finance packages. You can check out their dealer network through the firm’s website www.bransontractor.co.uk
Visitors were shown the new Ariens IKON-X durable, steel frame zero-turn mower with commercial quality cutter deck constructed from 10-gauge steel. The deck can be positioned to thirteen different cutting heights with an intuitively positioned dial. The IKON-X rotates 180º in its own footprint, allowing the operator to cut grass twice as fast as with a traditional ride-on mower. The ECHO range of new generation top handle chainsaws were displayed, with the highly anticipated new CS-2510TES making its debut at the show. A very light and compact top handle CS-2510TES weighs just 2.3kg but its 25cc engine has a 1.11kW power output – a superb power-to-weight ratio. It includes many features designed to make the tree surgeon’s job easier. The new ECHO PB-580 backpack blower, which had just arrived in the UK, was also displayed. The new design is one of ECHO’s most comfortable backpack blowers. www.ariensco.com

manoeuvrability, in what is a simplified machine. No less effective for that, this is a self propelled, hydrostatic sod cutter that offers a smooth, consistent power flow and you’ll immediately notice the speed which at 4.7mph/7.5kmh is, say Classen, the fastest in the industry. For operator comfort there is an advanced vibration dampening system and for ease of use the integrated throttle and clutch control on the handle goes idle and stops the machine when released. What you’re looking for in a sod cutter is a clean, smooth result and on this Classen the blade is placed at the centre of the machine to ensure a more consistent cutting depth, adjusting to cut sods up to 2.5”/6.3cm deep. The cutting blade makes twenty cutting strokes per second/1,200 per minute, to ensure you get that smooth result and increased sod cutting productivity. The standard 18” wide blade can be replaced with 12”, 16”, 20” or 24” optional blade assemblies in a matter of minutes (the 24” blade is available for HSC188 models only). There are two models of the new sod cutter to choose from, each with Honda engines. The Classen HSC185 has a 163cc Honda GX160 engine and the HSC188 a 242cc GX240. Frigid temperatures, snowfall and storms!
Reliable and responsive local people Snow presents a variety of potential problems and risks to businesses and the public alike. If snow is not cleared from roads and pedestrian pathways it can rapidly compact and form a thick layer of ice as it melts and refreezes. Moreover, the clearance of snow is a necessary prerequisite for the effective application of de-icing salt. Meteorologists have recently elevated the probability of an El Niño from 90 to 95 %, emphasising that the planet faces one of the most powerful El Niños since 1950, one which is expected to gravely impact global weather patterns. Only on two occasions in the recorded past has El Niño reached similar proportions as expected this year – most recently, in 1997. E L NIÑO’S IM PAC T ON THE UK Temperatures below freezing and severe storms are likely to sweep over the United Kingdom. Emergency Services have already been instructed to prepare for a repeat of the devastating winter of 1961/62, when temperatures dropped to 20 degrees below zero. Heav y snow fall is predicted toward the end of November, falling not only in the North, but spread over the UK and reaching into the South. According to the forecast of meteorologists El Niño will bring weather similar to that experienced in the winter of 2009/2010. At that time severe snow fall wreaked chaos on transportation hubs, such as airports. During the Christmas holiday period, in particular, passengers should ready themselves for lengthy travel times and delays, and even airport closures.

SnowEx builds tough equipment for precisely severe weather and has seen the developing trend towards using brine solutions rather than traditional salt and grit spreading. It’s easy to see why, for more and more councils and contractors, using brine has become the popular practice and they are increasingly opting for this method of dealing with the worst of winter. Brine solution is easily applied and highly effective used in conjunction with SnowEx VSS liquid de-icing systems. There are three models available to suit the extent of the work, starting with the VSS-1000 which, loaded with Wessex ThawEx brine solution for example, is ideal for getting to hard-to-reach places, with its capacity of

Time to get the gritters ready Winter may be, officially, the three month period between December and February, and in the eyes of those out with the industry be signalled by the first snowfall, but for those tasked with providing winter service every year, activity often begins with the first signs of ice and frost. When this happens, it’s time to get the gritters ready, and make sure your salt supply is adequate for the time ahead. Indeed, it is the issue of salt supply that needs to be addressed. What experience has told us is that advance-buying is key to protecting your winter maintenance business. While suppliers such as ourselves at Peacock are well prepared, if others do not take it upon themselves to stock up, then the

Plantlife has announced its new Vice President: broadcaster, horticulturalist, writer and garden designer Rachel de Thame. Rachel’s passion for plants emerged in early childhood and is now the cornerstone of a varied career. A familiar face on our screens since 1999, Rachel is perhaps best known as a presenter of BBC’s flagship series Gardeners’ World and Great British Garden Revival, as well as reporting from all the major flower shows. Her work on Countrywise for ITV1 enabled her to explore wild areas across the length and breadth of the country. Rachel is currently creating a wild flower meadow at her Cotswold home. Marian Spain, Plantlife CEO says “I am thrilled that Rachel will be working with Plantlife. She will be a huge boost to everybody in working towards our aim of saving and celebrating wild flowers. With one in every five of our native flowers under threat, Rachel’s support will be invaluable in inspiring even more people to take action for our vanishing flora.”
