Decision day We will be asked in the next few months to vote on our continued membership of the European Union. Our decision to stay or leave will have profound effects for many generations to come. Most of the arguments that you will hear before D day will cover almost every aspect of our membership. We believe that the environment should be top of the list. The evidence is clear, our rivers beaches, parks, forests and city green spaces would pay the price if we voted to leave. In 1995 over 83% of our household waste went to landfill with only 7% recycled or composted. Because of EU directives the UK’s recycling rate is now over 45%. Indeed the UK now recycles 90% of construction materials. Virtually all of our beaches now comply with EU minimum standards on cleanliness. In 1995 our beaches were filthy. This is a huge benefit to the local
economies of the seaside towns. Our air is cleaner reducing the risk of respiratory disease. EU emissions directives will keep governments on their toes to ensure that this battle continues. The Birds and Habitats Directives are effective weapons against biodiversity loss. Endangered birds, bees and carnivores are less threatened. EU legislation forces successive governments, whatever colour, to keep improving the environment. Many of the challenges we face are cross -border so we have to work with our neighbours. To ensure the UK has a cleaner, greener future we cannot walk away from EU. Have a good month.
Cover Story Capel Manor College has won a grant from Bromley Council’s Crystal Palace Park Community Projects Fund to create a new community wildlife space for South East London.
The project will bring to life an area of Crystal Palace Park that is currently inaccessible to park users and will act as an outdoor classroom for local residents and Capel students. The proposal was developed in partnership with Emily Harris, an outdoor learning and heritage education consultant. The new educational wildlife space will be located just behind Crystal Palace Farm, delivering a beautiful new environment abundant with local wildlife and animal habitats: insectrich wildflower meadow borders, a stag beetle loggery, a minibeast hotel, bat boxes, bird boxes and feeders. Each key feature within the space will be interpreted with graphic panels. “Capel students, staff and volunteers will develop and create the wildlife space we have designed to attract and support local wildlife” says Andrew Smith, Centre Manager for the Capel’s Crystal Palace Park College centre. “It will provide opportunities for local residents to learn about, explore and engage with nature found on their doorstep.” Tel: 020 8778 5572 www.capel.ac.uk

£40m nationwide contract
Ground Control has been awarded nationwide contracts by Network Rail, to help with the effective management of trees and plants that line the rail network, they will support Network Rail across their routes with the national vegetation management programme over the next four years. Ground Control’s Arb Rail (Arboricultural Services) team will be carrying out the works. This is the company’s newest division which was established in 2012 following the acquisition of the Arboricultural Division of UPM Tilhill. Peter Allen, director of Arboriculture, told The Landscaper, “Further investments in developing our teams will ensure we continue to meet the challenge of vegetation management as part of this essential safety and improvement programme”. Unmanaged trees and plants can cause serious safety problems for the railway by covering up signals or falling on to tracks and overhead power lines. With an estimated 2.5 million trees growing on the line-side it’s a big job. “We’re proud to be supporting the work to keep the railway safe and running as smoothly as possible” Peter added. “In practical terms, this achievement secures the future of Ground Control’s successful Rail business for the next four years. We will be able to grow our Rail business by delivering an outstanding service to our Network Rail

customers. With an estimated contract value in excess of £40m over the four-year contract period, this could be Ground Control’s largest single contract win to date,” explained Ground Control Managing Director, Marcus Watson. “Such a result cannot be achieved on the basis of a tender alone: it is made possible because of our Arb Rail colleagues, who over many years have been focussed on developing strong partnerships within all Network Rail regions and delivering a fantastic service to our customers.” The senior team that helped to secure the landmark contract for Ground Control comprises of Peter Allen, supported by Steve Gates (Rail North), James Hanna (Rail South) and Greg Buckley, HSQE Manager. Network Rail owns, manages and develops Britain’s railway - the 20,000 miles of track, 40,000 bridges and viaducts, and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations (the largest of which it also runs). In partnership with train operators Network Rail helps people take more than 1.6bn journeys by rail every year - double the number of 1996 - and move hundreds of millions of tonnes of freight, saving almost 8m lorry journeys. Network Rail is investing £38bn in the railway by 2019 to deliver more frequent, more reliable, safer services and brighter and better stations.

Bin trailer
New finance options
A new easy to use attachment has been added to the SCH (Supplies) Ltd range to make transportation of wheelie bins easier and quicker. Hitch the two wheeled trailer to the rear of a garden independent grips to securely lift each bin by its handles and tip so that the bins are lifted off the ground. You can then drive the trailer and bins to any areas you want. This trailer is ideal for establishments with a very long drive, where the bins need to be at the roadside for weekly collection or brown bins need to move around the garden. It is also very useful for organisations and business where there may be multiple bins on site that require transporting to one collection point. For example, camping and caravanning sites, schools and universities. The trailer is also perfect for using at public events, festivals etc. The retail price for this trailer is £195.00 plus VAT. SCH also manufacture other types of bin trailers as well as standard garden trailers, sprayers, waterers and lawn care systems. www.schsupplies.co.uk

Environmental conviction? In excess of 2.7 billion international air travellers a year render aviation the fastest growing transport sector. Flying has a high environmental impact and gives rising concerns for CO2 emissions and climate change. Nonetheless, there are few signs of changing behaviour even from committed environmentalists, many of whom continue to fly. Recent research in the Journal of Marketing Management studies the tensions between green principles and real actions. The authors conducted interviews with 29 environmentalists to gather first-hand accounts and qualitative data. Respondents were questioned in depth about their decision-making processes on travel purchases and a series of rationales emerged: despite their awareness of environmental damage and principles against flying, they produced justifications for air travel accordingly. Boats, buses and trains were not considered to be practical options. Many justified air travel by factors outside their control.
Power Tools and Quad Bikes top “Most Stolen” Quad bikes and tools top the list of the most stolen items in the last year. That’s the view of a national alarm company, which says that more attention to crime prevention will save businesses thousands of pounds spent in replacing equipment and higher insurance premiums. The MonitoredAlarms.co.uk which installs and maintains alarm systems for both domestic properties and businesses, says that a simple audit of security is usually enough to spot vulnerable areas and save farms from attacks by organised gangs. “Theft has always been the scourge of the business,” says MonitoredAlarms.co.uk spokesperson Jonathan Ratcliffe, “But quad bikes are being stolen as never before at a rate of 15 per week, and its clear these are not opportunist thieves.” According to a survey carried out by MonitoredAlarms.co.uk, the results virtually mirror those produced by NFU Mutual last year, and show that thieves favour items which are readily portable. The Top Ten items stolen items 2015: • Power tools • ATVs/Quad bikes • Trailers • Machinery and tractors • Livestock • Garden equipment • Oil/Diesel • Equestrian equipment • Bicycles • Solar panels Keep your insurance up-to-date !

Young green talent The 2016 ‘Young Gardeners of the Year’ competition launched at the end of 2015 is being supported by landscape supplier, Green-tech. Green-tech will be donating the Mona irrigation system and a range of soils and growing media to the annual competition, organised by TV Gardener David Domoney and the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community. The competition celebrates ‘young green talent’, an ethos embraced by Green-tech, where many of the 50 strong team began their careers straight from education and have progressed into management roles. Six of the UK’s leading Horticultural colleges will go head-to-head to create a sustainable garden that will be viewed by quarter of a million visitors at the Ideal Home Show in London in March. Each college will be given a 5.5m x 4m plot to both plan and design a garden that will demonstrate an understanding of harmony and sustainability. This year David is actively encouraging diversity of design and promoting smart use of features such as lighting. Judging will take place on the first day of the Ideal
Home Show on 18th March 2016 by an esteemed panel of industry leaders, home and garden magazine editors and acclaimed garden designers. The overall winners will be crowned Young Gardeners of the Year 2016. Richard Kay, Chairman of Green-tech told The Landscaper ‘We are delighted to once again be in a position to support future generations of landscapers and garden designers. This is a prestigious competition that really makes a difference to the young people coming through the system. These people are the future of landscaping and we are proud to be part of their journey. The quality of the gardens that were created last year was outstanding and I’m looking forward to seeing what the young gardeners produce this year.”

Subtle tones The Playhouse Company, has reported a change in its customers’ habits and preferences. Over the course of its 20 years the Playhouse Company has noticed an emerging trend of the choice of colours selected by customers. CEO, Richard Frost, told The Landscaper “When the company started out, our customers wanted bright colours that really stood out. Increasingly, we’re in fact now seeing the opposite with more subtle tones being selected”. Richard attributes this to many factors ranging from fashion and what’s popular in culture to perhaps parents now making the decisions “Despite what parents think, ultimately our customers are their children. They are the end user. Originally parents wanted their playhouses to be brightly coloured for their children, however we’re now noticing that they are choosing something more neutral that blends in with the rest of the garden”. www.theplayhousecompany.co.uk.

New Dealer for Hampshire Etesia, the exclusive distributor of Pellenc batterypowered equipment in the UK, has announced Hampshire based Mid Hants Mowers as a new Pellenc dealer. Established in 1978, Mid Hants Mowers provide sales, servicing, collection and a break down service for all types of domestic garden machinery, professional ground care and arboriculture tree care. Based at the beautiful Hartley Park Farm in Alton, Mid Hants Mowers has a fully stocked show room with a comprehensive selection of top brand machinery, which is complimented by good honest advice to help you select the right machine to match all your requirements. The company has gone from strength to strength over the years, with managing directors Saul Ross and Simon Clarke seeing an increase in both members of staff and business. Their success can, in part, be attributed to their forward thinking approach which sees them embracing new technologies such as the Pellenc battery powered products. After listening to their customers, Saul decided the time was right to introduce the Pellenc brand. “We’ve been asked about the battery products over and over again and to meet our customers’ needs we actually
started stocking some products from another company. These were fine for domestic use but we’ve started kitting out a few professional arborists and the feedback I was getting was that they just were not good enough. They said that they didn’t want twenty batteries to last a day – they wanted one battery to last the whole day without sacrificing on performance. The products we were offering were not commercial products and this is why we chose to bring in Pellenc.” The addition of the Pellenc range of equipment will present Mid Hants Mowers customers with a lighter, odourless, noise-free and more cost effective alternative to petrol powered machinery. Not only will users see improved performance but they will also be contributing to protecting the environment by reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and noise pollution. www.midhantsmowers.com

Mower of the Year John Deere’s 1500 Series TerrainCut front rotary mower has won the Horticulture Week What Kit? Ride-On Mower of the Year Award 2015, announced in December. The ride-on award citation said: “This has been the hardest category to judge. There are several worthy winners and we met on three occasions to try to decide the winner. In the end it was the versatility of the John Deere mower that clinched it. “Out-front rotaries are a first choice for many contractors carrying out council work and are a favourite with operators. The 1500 Series TerrainCut offers an exceptionally comfortable work station, with a commanding view of the work ahead and well laid-out controls.” Originally launched at IOG SALTEX 2014, there are five 1500 Series TerrainCut models equipped with powerful, high-torque, three-cylinder diesel engines from 24 to 36hp, four-wheel drive, high-capacity rotary mower decks and a new optional grass and leaf collection system. They are designed to mow and collect thick grass at high speeds and still produce a quality cut. Featuring a compact design for manoeuvrability and easy transport and a robust hydrostatic transmission, the range meets the various needs of landscapers, contractors, groundsmen, greenkeepers, local authorities and other amenity turf customers. There is a choice of durable 7-Iron 1.5 and 1.8m (60 and 72in) side- and rear-discharge decks, with an optional mulching kit, and a John Deere factory fitted cab is available as standard on two models. Key user-friendly features include cruise control, a comfortable seat, Twin Touch pedals for the transmission and an electro-hydraulic deck drive clutch, while an air ride seat is optionally available. The quick-attach GLC1500 grass
and leaf collection system has a hopper capacity of 600 or 900 litres. The collector’s fast dump speed, 203cm (80in) high tip and 83cm (33in) long reach features also increase overall productivity. Additional attachments such as a front-mounted brush or blade allow the mowers to be used year round for a wide range of other commercial applications, including both leaf and snow clearance.
Masterplan
Independent design, environment and sustainability consultancy, LDA Design, has been commissioned by Merton Council to develop the Wimbledon Park and Lake masterplan. The masterplan will create a vision for the next 25 years and help shape local investment for the future. The proposed plan will give a comprehensive overview for the entirety of the public park, including the 9 hectare Lake designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in the 18th century. Chris Laine, Principal Consultant at LDA Design said: “The Wimbledon Park and Lake Masterplan offers a real opportunity to enhance what is already a widely enjoyed outdoor space. We aim to secure the park’s long-term future as a focus for recreation and valuable green space in Wimbledon. Working in close collaboration with Merton Council, and through consultation with local organisations and residents, we’re confident the proposal will deliver a strategy that benefits the local area and highlights the Park’s considerable historic and ecological significance.” Merton Council Cabinet Member for Environmental Sustainability and Regeneration, Councillor Andrew Judge said: “This will be a great opportunity for us to work with the local community and ensure residents and visitors to Merton are able to enjoy our beautiful park, and all that it has to offer, for generations to come.”

FibreGrid’s latest addition to their SlipGrip range, should help in reducing such accidents, as SlipGrip Safety Glow uses a photoluminescent resin which absorbs light during the day, and glows through the night. By day stair treads look like any other in the FibreGrid range – black ExtremeCore grit, with a 55mm x 55mm yellow or white nosing to warn the visually impaired where the step edge is (also keeps you DDA compliant). However, when darkness descends, the new SlipGrip Safety Glow coating on the step-nosing glows for up to 8 hours, so illuminating potentially hazardous steps, kerbs and edges. It doesn’t matter if there is no sun, as they will charge in overcast conditions, and they aren’t just for outdoor use as they are also charged by electric light. SlipGrip Safety Glow is available in medium or coarse slip resistant finishes, and is suitable for heavy pedestrian traffic. Suggested applications would be steps and kerbs in public car parks, hospitals, educational establishments, loading bays, stairs, ramps and fire exits. www.fibregrid.com

Getting paid – peace of mind A new consumer protection service to help homeowners and tradespeople enter into an agreed contractual arrangement when paying for home improvement, repair or maintenance work has been announced today by TrustMark, the only Government-endorsed scheme for all trades in and around the home. The Escrow service is a low cost, quick and effective way of helping TrustMark-registered firms and their customers protect each other through a financial contract, with the payment for the works, being placed into an independent, secure account, which protected by a Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) authorised firm. Depending on the works and payment structure agreed, the service will allow the customer to pay for the work in advance or in staged payments. For tradespeople, this will provide peace of mind that they will be able to supply the materials and complete the work knowing the funds for the job are available through the Escrow account. Based upon the terms and conditions, which the two parties set and agree before the works starts, payment will be released accordingly. There is a cost of £6 per party to set up the core Escrow service. For homeowners, this payment will guarantee satisfaction for building work, and for the firms, it will guarantee 100% full payment. Additional costs may apply if multiple stage payments are used or for very large transactions. Once the terms and conditions have been agreed and payment has been received, the funds for the work are placed into the secure account. This can only be accessed for payment subject the pre-agreed terms and conditions and the firm has visibility of the funds but no direct access. As the works proceed, and only once the various stages are met, the customer is obligated to release the funds to the firm. TrustMark has partnered with Transpact.com, Europe’s leading escrow provider, to process all the payments and deposit transactions and will provide full protection to both parties involved. Transpact.com uses the UK’s Faster Payment Service (FPS) so payment is received and cleared into the firm’s bank account within a few seconds or minutes of the customer completing the secure instruction process. In the event of a dispute involving the payment between the firm and customer, TrustMark will work to mediate and resolve the issues between the two parties, and if necessary will apply final arbitration according to the preagreed conditions set. Simon Ayers, Chief Executive of TrustMark, said: “Using

TrustMark Escrow can be a great solution for many homeowners with bigger jobs, such as extensions that can take a few months to complete, as it means they won’t actually pay any money direct to a tradesperson or firm until they are fully satisfied. For the tradesperson, they will know they are dealing with a genuine customer and guaranteed payment if they carry out their side of the contract. This is a positive step to eliminating those rogue traders who take large amounts of money for shoddy workmanship.” Andrew Kaye, Founder of Transpact.com, added: “TrustMark’ssimple new service ensures rogue traders are gone forever and replaced by fully paid tradespeople who provide a promise of quality. It makes sense for anyone doing work to their home to use an escrow account as they are guaranteed the quality work they had agreed to their pre-set specification, or their money back, and every tradesperson is guaranteed 100% payment.” www.trustmarkescrow.org.uk

Gaining ground Grassroots sport in the West Midlands will gain a welcome boost this spring when freshly created playing fields come on stream to counter lost provision. Specialist contractor CLS Sports has created new pitches on a 10.5-hectare site at Barnhurst Lane, Wolverhampton, under a project to regain fields lost to the Building School for the Future multibillion pound programme locally. The scheme, supported by Sport England and the Football Foundation, creates an area equivalent to that lost under the schools initiative. CLS Sports own the specialised equipment needed to deliver this scale and style of project and are experienced in constructing pitches, including the surveying processes required and turfcare knowledge. The contractor won the work because from a quality/cost perspective, they proved to
be the most competitive. The works have been carried out to a high standard, the client, City of Wolverhampton, reports, and include sustainable drainage systems, car park soakaways and controlled outflow from the pitches to the local River Penk. Barnhurst Lane has already been marked out for eight pitches and seeded with a ryegrass mix ready for expected handover this spring. Plans are afoot to stage Gaelic football on the site, although this is still to be confirmed. With an emphasis on promoting biodiversity and to boost the attractiveness of the site through spring and summer, perimeter areas have been set aside for wildflower planting, creating a flush of colour and a lure for pollinating insects. www.cls-sports.co.uk 01642 488328
Focus shifted to linemarking Year-round golf can prove a double-edged sword when winter wear threatens to wreck playing conditions in spring and summer. Leighton Buzzard Course Manager Paul Harris (pictured) knows from his experience that a winter traffic management programme can help sustain sward but he has chosen to adopt a different style of the strategy this time round at the 18-hole Bedfordshire private members parkland course.

“Aerosols, posts and ropes are expensive, unsightly, prone to vandalism and get in the way of play,” Paul explains. “When golfers remove ropes, in nine out of ten times they don’t put them back.” His focus shifted to linemarking measures. “We needed a quality, lightweight linemarking machine that was easy to use and efficient,” he continues. “The Briteliner Arrow fitted the bill.” From late October through to March, the greens team uses the Arrow and Vitax SupaStadia marking paint to apply demarcation lines to the approaches on the 1st, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 13th and 17th holes. “Quick and easy to lay down, the lines stay clear and sharp for long enough to allow us to help vulnerable areas recover,” adds Paul, “and are a friendly, unintrusive way to say ‘Walk this way’.” When spring play begins, golfers pit their wits against the challenges of Leighton Buzzard, including the feature 11th Par 3, described by commentating legend Henry Longhurst as “outstanding” in his book ‘The Nine Most Beautiful Golf Holes in England’, with the benefit of Paul’s linemarking traffic management programme that has played out over the winter. For eight months of the year, the Arrow will lie dormant in the shed, its job done until the autumn. “After power spraying the machine clean, a little WD40 is all the maintenance it needs,” declares Paul. www.vitax.co.uk

High power – zero emissions Lithium-ion batteries are rapidly becoming the “go-to” power source in the lawn and garden care market. Steve Roskell considers the reasons for their rapid growth
The launch year for EGO has gone very well and we have achieved the challenging sales targets we set ourselves firmly establishing the EGO brand in the independent dealer network. This is quite telling and demonstrates a need in the industry for an alternative power source. More and more customers want a greener alternative, but not just that they also want an easier alternative. Put simply, lifestyles are becoming more hectic so people want a quick and easy solution for maintaining their garden. That’s where we come in with our 56v lithiumion battery; we pride ourselves on our no noise, fumes or fuss ideology. “17 million gallons of petrol is wasted each year by people refilling petrol gardening products”
26
www.landscapermagazine.com
In a society conscious of environmental impacts and carbon footprints, EGO offers something that eliminates the pollution of petrol products. Research suggests that 17 million gallons of petrol is wasted each year by people refilling petrol gardening products , whereas EGO customers don’t use a drop. Similarly, EGO users are greener in that operating a petrol powered lawn mower for an hour produces as much pollution as driving a car 45 miles. We are powered entirely by 56 volt lithiumion batteries and our batteries are designed and manufactured by one the world’s leading companies involved in this cutting edge market – Chervon. Chervon was formed in 1994 and, in just 20 years, has grown into one of the top ten global power tool equipment manufacturers employing more than 5,500 people, with
editorial been developed. EGO’s proprietary “Keep Cool” cell technology works with each battery cell to maintain long-term power and unmatched performance. “Operating a petrol powered lawn mower for an hour produces as much pollution as driving a car 45miles” The EGO Power+ system also boasts a revolutionary charging system. In just 30 minutes, a depleted battery can be fully recharged. Power beyond belief starts with better technology. That’s what puts EGO’s power, performance and durability on a whole new level.
offices in North America, China, Europe and Australia and with a current turnover in excess of $500 million. Chervon’s confidence in the long term future of lithium-ion as the driving force for outdoor equipment throughout the world is assured and massive investment in future R&D and manufacturing will ensure the continued success of EGO for many years to come. This confidence is borne out by the massive success achieved by our EGO brand in its first year in North America. EGO was launched in the USA at the start of the 2014 season and quickly became established as a major force. In the first six months alone it achieved an incredible sales performance which now positions EGO as the number two brand, by value, in cordless lawn mowers, in America. Thanks to Chervon we have a technology in place in our battery which secures our position as a leader in lithiumion powered garden tools. The technology used in our EGO Power+ system is groundbreaking. It begins with the industry’s first 56 volt lithium-ion powered battery. Unlike battery packs, that are shaped like bricks and retain heat, EGO batteries follow a patented “arc” design. Inside, the most advanced software management system ever created in a home lawn and garden product has
The EGO Power+ system is unique in its offering, as it has the optimum level of power, harnessed in its 56 volt battery. Traditionally, the most popular battery size has been the 36 volt, but EGO’s extensive investment in research has led to the development of the considerably more powerful 56 volt. For the first time lithium-ion powered products offer a genuine alternative to petrol powered products. The operating efficiency of EGO’s 56 volt lithium-ion powered battery offers a viable alternative to petrol and electric models for users with large areas of garden to maintain, with the benefits being seemingly endless. The operating cost of equipment, using these unique batteries, is estimated to be just 10 per cent of that for petrol, with virtually zero emissions. Imagined and brought to life by a global organisation with a 20-year history of delivering premium quality and breakthrough technology, EGO has changed the very nature of lawn and garden equipment, all starting with the innovation of the Power+ system”. Steve Roskell, is the European marketing director for EGO Power.

If you don’t light it you won’t see it! Landscapers and Garden Designers can profit by adding lighting to their portfolio By Martin Bennet
Work integrated garden lighting into your design as these final details will really set off your scheme and create a stunning effect in the garden by night. The basic function of lighting is to extend the hours in the day. With the latest technology garden lighting is both practical and affordable. The garden can be considered an extension of indoor living space and introducing outdoor lighting will not only extend the time spent in the Garden but also give it a very different appearance. The rule is “if you don’t light it you won’t see it” Dramatic directional lighting will provide a contrast to the saturated downlighting of daylight making opportunities to create new scenes by lighting focal points, water features, statues and interesting branch structures of trees. Lighting can alter the way gardens are used, entertaining on the patio, lighting a decking area or enjoying an after dark barbecue are just some ways in which garden lighting can enhance your clients lifestyle.

The principle behind the century old tradition of changeable light bulbs remains as strong today as ever. If brighter or dimmer light is required simply change the bulb. This cannot be done with lights with built in LED’s, plus if the LED should fail, which can happen from time to time, the complete light will have to be replaced meaning an expensive call out to an electrician costing much time and
money even if the light is under warranty. [Warranty will not cover electrician cost]. LED bulbs are available in a variety of wattages and also in warm white, cool white and daylight, giving the option of experimenting with the best lighting effect something not possible with built in LED lights. Eight trillion beneficial nematodes As the world increasingly seeks natural, safer and more effective pest control solutions, BASF unveils the final stage of its current multi-million pound programme that dramatically increases the volume of its nematode production facility. David Curtis visits their expanded updated plant in West Sussex
Checking fermentor operation Nematodes are naturally occurring microscopic animal organisms that are present in garden soil where they naturally hunt down their target prey. Certain nematode species control slug and other garden pests naturally with no side effects or harm to children, pets or nontarget species such as birds or hedgehogs. A new 75,000 litre fermenting vessel commissioned at BASF’s Littlehampton plant in West Sussex holds more than eight trillion beneficial nematodes guaranteeing product availability for UK gardeners who increasingly use the Nemasys range of products for slug and pest control. It is the world’s largest site for beneficial nematode their production and is the only one in the UK. “British gardeners are increasingly using beneficial nematodes as one the most effective ways control slugs and other pests. Nemaslug and Nemasys products are natural, highly effective and environmentally friendly with no adverse effects to children, pets and wildlife,” says Mike Finney, BASF’s Key Country Sales Manager Biologicals Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “They occur naturally in our gardens and by harnessing and replicating nature we produce five different species to control a range of different target pests.”

Each one is based on a specific nematode species that naturally attack the harmful pests. All are applied using either a garden hose end feeder or watering can. them from eating and quickly killing them. It does not stop there. They reproduce inside the dead pest and release new generations of hungry nematodes that disperse in the soil to hunt down further pests. When they can no longer find host pests they die back to their original numbers. Nematodes also act as a natural deterrent to slugs and other pests that quickly detect their presence and move away from their predators to safer, untreated areas. Slugs are Britain’s most hated garden pest. The vast majority live within the soil. Only those venturing to the surface are likely to be attracted to pellet bait. Nemaslug is in the soil where the nematodes actively seek out their prey. All Nemasys products are available online.

Pictorial Meadows has launched its annual seed mix range which guarantees to transform gardens and bloom from spring to first frost. Available to buy online their seeds are available as 6g packets for the home gardener (costing £4.50p) – but most is sold as bulk sales to local authorities and landscapers looking to create large scale meadows such as the iconic Olympic Park. These mixes are designed to be sown in situ on an average garden soil and will quickly start flowering with distinct ‘waves’ of colour right up to the first frosts – providing a rich nectar source for all pollinators. These mixes can be used in virtually every conceivable garden and landscape situation – from planters and borders, to large scale urban or rural projects. They are increasingly used by land owners and managers to form an effective and dramatic antidote to large expanses of grass or municipal plantings. www.pictorialmeadows.co.uk

CDTS were selected as the specialist seeding contractor for the A3 Bypass which also included the new tunnel under the Devil’s Punchbowl, meaning that the old A3 could be removed from this SSSI area and restored using locally harvested seed. The contract commenced with the seeding of grass on some initial areas but more importantly with the instigation of a phased programme of seed collection from local heathland donor sites using CDTS brush seed harvester. This involved the harvesting of both acid grassland species and heather, which were subsequently hydroseeded onto both areas alongside the new A3 and onto the line of the old A3. As the contract progressed through 2007-2010, the seeding programme also saw large reinforced slopes hydroseeded with fast-established grass mixtures, plus the conventional seeding of a variety of site-specific native wildflower mixtures, carefully chosen to suit the very sandy woodland soils. Once sown, a maintenance schedule of weed control was instigated to keep the invasion of gorse at bay. New ryegrass Limagrain has announced the addition of a new ryegrass - which is set to be part of the MM50 grass seed mixture. Alison, the latest ryegrass from Limagrain, follows in the footsteps of varieties such as Venice, Malibu and Cyrena, which are all used in various mixtures throughout the market leading MM range of grass seed. Alison is a fine leaved ryegrass with exceptional shoot density and wear tolerance plus great recovery, making it particularly suitable for all cricket squares, golf tees, fairways and multi-use sports fields. Disease resistance is a key attribute to the Alison ryegrass along with tolerance to close mowing – ensuring that it is a great addition the Limagrain portfolio. All the varieties in the MM mixtures are also thoroughly tested at the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) – ensuring that the finished product will meet your requirements for play, appearance and maintenance. Already the number one choice for those responsible for managing turf at a number of leading venues in the UK and Europe, MM50 is set to improve even further with the addition of Alison. This superior mix has been designed for fast establishment and recovery in extreme high wear areas. It is ideal for divotting, seeding and overseeding, and can be used all year round. Like other mixtures in the MM range, MM50 is treated with HEADSTART GOLD - a revolutionary grass seed treatment that ensures rapid germination. This user friendly, nontoxic treatment can help your grass get off to a great start and is perfect for enhancing performance on grass seed coatings for sports fields, golf courses, lawns and amenity turf. www.lgseeds.co.uk

Soil investigation Soil scientists Tim O’Hare Associates (TOHA) have just completed a soil investigation at London’s Garden Museum in Lambeth to advise on the topsoil’s quality, quantity and suitability for re-use in the museum’s new public garden, which is being designed by Dan Pearson. The £7.5m redevelopment of the Garden Museum, which is a registered charity, is being funded by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Lambeth Council and over 1000 private individuals, charitable trusts and foundations; the new garden forms part of the redevelopment. TOHA have conducted soil surveys on a number of historic sites, including those managed by The Royal Parks and the Crown Estate. They were approached at an early stage of the project by garden designer and Garden Museum trustee Tom Stuart-Smith to ask if they could conduct the survey as a favour to support the
44

redevelopment. In November, TOHA soil scientist Dr Iain Gould visited the garden to assess in-situ soil conditions and to obtain samples that underwent a suite of horticultural tests. On analysis the soils were found to be mature London garden soil, with the necessary properties to warrant their recovery and storage. Speaking about the results, Dr Gould said: “We were happy to help out with such an interesting and worthwhile project and delighted that further expense can be spared by recovering this topsoil, storing it off site, and re-using it once the major groundworks have been completed. This is a good illustration of how soil investigation at an early stage in a project can avoid topsoil being damaged by construction activities or being removed as waste to be replaced with new topsoil at considerable expense when the existing soil is perfectly useable.”

You can go glamping – glamorous camping – Mediaeval style in the grounds of Warwick Castle, with entertainment including archery, a Jester’s School and Knight’s school. Overlooking the river Avon and surrounded by wooded parkland, the site in the castle grounds features the circular Mediaeval themed tents you would see on jousting fields in the movies. They are fully fitted, ready-to-sleep and the King’s Luxury Tent even has a 4-poster bed. One and a half metre coconut matting walkways connect to a large central tent that houses the food preparation hall. The tents go up when the site opens in April and remain in place all season. Fully fitted with wooden floors, they have conical roofs that shed rain around the periphery of the tent and, as there is no provision for drainage, the medium to heavy clay soil does become very wet. When the time comes in October to remove the tents the areas that have been covered by the wooden floors and coconut matting since April are left as bare, wet mud. These have to be brought back to grass as quickly as possible, to meet the planning conditions for the glamping use of the historic and protected parkland. Specialists in deep aeration treatment, Terrain Aeration returned to Warwick Castle for the second year to treat and help restore the area. The first job needed once the tents were out of the way was to clear the surface water and ease any compaction in the soil that had been covered by the floors and pathways. The area was too wet and muddy for Terrain Aeration’s
46

wheeled Terralift machines to gain traction and so the Tracker Terralift was used with up to a 100 metre long air pipe deployed to allow the compressor to remain on the main vehicle route through the entire site and not get bogged down. The Terralift treatment injects compressed air into the soil as much as a metre deep to decompact, aerate and inject seaweed across the affected areas. The seaweed sticks to the walls of the fractures, swelling and contracting and keeping the fissures open. The process clears surface water areas, helping to dry up any mud, leaving the area ready for surface preparation and the replacement of the missing grass. www.terrainaeration.co.uk 01449 673783
Plagued by flooding Duncan Ross – specialist sportsturf contractors – has completed a project at Wolstanton Golf Club, based just outside Newcastle-under-Lyme, to install the courses’ first ever established drainage systems. Founded in 1904, the course sits in 130 acres of Old Dimsdale Hall parkland, providing golfers with an 18 hole, 5761-yard challenge that incorporates mature vegetation into the tight layout. However, the picturesque course had been plagued by flooding on greens 5, 8 and 18 and the decision was taken to install drainage systems, as head green keeper, Andy

Stay Ahead of the Competition
Andrew Read, (right) course manager at Longridge Golf Club in Lancashire, has praised Everris, part of the ICL Group, for helping the club keep ahead of the competition. “A few people I had spoken to had recommended the iTurf programme from Everris so I had some samples taken and then arranged to meet Henry Bechelet (PICTURED) from the company. Together we went through all the samples, drew up a detailed programme and then started the iTurf programme. It has just been fantastic for us - the greens have never looked so good.” programme and then started the iTurf programme. It has just been fantastic for us - the greens have never looked so good.” Andrew now uses SierraformGT Spring Start 16-0-16 and he has now said goodbye to inconsistent results. “What we experienced in the past is that we had so many peaks and troughs. Where you feed the greens; they will grow like mad, so you’re cutting and emptying all the time. So then you go slower and then after 3 or 4 weeks
48
www.landscapermagazine.com
that feed will go down. And that is just how it was – slow, fast, slow, fast, but with the Sierraform Spring Start, it is just a constant speed all the way through. It’s not slowing or lushing; it simply kicks in and is perfect for the greens.” SierraformGT Spring Start has been designed for use on high quality, fine turf throughout the year. Each granule contains conventional and slow release nutrient sources for consistent and sustained release patterns meaning that users no longer have to endure the ‘peaks and troughs’ that Andrew faced. To maximise the results from Longridge’s greens he also uses Greenmaster Pro-Lite Double K granular fertilizer; a product he is particularly fond of. “Going into autumn, I’ll apply some Greenmaster Double K. This is just to give them a bit of strength and to fight off any diseases. It is fantastic – especially the colour it gives you. They look too green sometimes particularly in winter but that’s what you want. The members absolutely love it.” www.everris.co.uk

Eight million trees worth £6.1 billion key benefits revealed in the survey results. The removal of 2,241 tonnes of pollution, at a value of £126m per annum can be further broken down using i-Tree into each pollutant and by Inner, Outer and Greater London with
Former AA President Lord Framlingham hosted the launch of the long awaited and much valued London i-Tree Eco urban forest survey attended by key figures including representatives from the AA at a Westminster reception. Using 300 volunteers the survey is the largest citizen science project of its kind and its results a testament to the quantifiable benefits of trees. With 8 million trees worth £6.1 billion to the capital the wider benefits (eco system services) in respect of storm water alleviation, carbon storage and pollution removal can now be broken down and quantified. The figures per annum are in the millions. Flood and air pollution reduction were some of the
removal the greatest for ozone. With the current floods and heavy rains it is accepted that storm water run-off as well as river breaches played a key role in the severe flooding experienced in parts of the country. Climate change predictions suggest further extreme rainfall events and with an increase in building and impermeable services the risk of floods can only increase. The quantifiable benefit of trees to mitigate this will be of significant value in supporting the case for planting, maintenance and appropriate species choice. The report showed that in London storm water alleviation was 3,414,000m3 per annum, worth £2.8 million. Summing up the importance of the report and its wider use in the UK Rory Stewart the Environment Minister invited Lord Framlingham to form a small team of experts to meet with him to discuss the issue of no one identified government minster with responsibility for trees. Looking to the future the Arboricultural Association is meeting with Forest Research and Treeconomics to plan the launch of i-Tree Eco Version 6 for the UK.
Getting the best from the trees Depending on the type of course, trees can play an important role on a golf course. If not managed effectively however, trees or roots can change soil characteristics whilst the canopy or fallen leaves can cause shaded areas which in turn can result in problems with airflow, surface dampness and disease. At Penn Golf Club near South Staffordshire, a comprehensive programme of tree maintenance is underway, overseen by Golf Course Manager Paul Mills. “We are a heathland course with some wooded areas which are basically just neglected, overgrown heath space. We are currently 6 years into a 10 year Higher Level Stewardship agreement with Natural England to remove the woodland and revert the area back to open heathland.” Paul estimates
50
www.landscapermagazine.com
that to date, they have felled and removed approximately 1000 trees, which has come with a few problems. “Initially, with any mention of removing trees, we faced resistance and confrontation to the plans but it was a case of explaining the end goal and getting people to notice that it was the right type of maintenance required to better the course” says Paul. “Once people have seen the finished results, the feedback has been positive and the work has been well received.” A task of this size has also required the use of specialist tools, one of which being a stump grinder which Paul has regularly hired from Orange Plant. Orange Plant is the only European partner for the Carlton Range, from which Paul has used the SP4012D and SP5014TRX models. Using a stump grinder eliminates the need to burn, dig or treat tree stumps

Must for 2016 diary! with chemicals. The powerful grinding teeth reduce tree stumps to ground level and below, which allows replanting or ground preparation for just about any purpose. Paul adds, “Using these machines to remove the stump has meant we can get straight on with other machinery to start preparing the land for further works. Also, some of the trees that we’ve felled have been close to the playing line meaning we needed to eliminate the stump as quickly as possible to reduce trip and other health & safety risks.” www.orangeplant.co.uk
The hugely successful ARB show is returning this year to Westonbirt. Simon Richmond Senior Technical Officer and Show Manager told The Landscaper.” We have been taking plot bookings and enquiries earlier and earlier –at the end of the 2015 Show we were continually approached by exhibitors as they were packing up. The main question was when are we coming back to Westonbirt – and when can I book for next year? Well the answer is obviously a resounding yes to coming back to the National Arboretum and plots can be booked right now’ Clearly the unprecedented success of the 2015 Show has driven demand for information about this year’s show. New year new products
Stonemarket, has revealed its new products for 2016 The additional ranges add to their existing collection of landscaping materials. Vitrified Paving New vitrified paving addition Knotwood comes in two colourways - Cherry and Birch - and introduces a new design texture and added interest for garden projects. These products perfectly recreate the colours and textures of wood planks, but have none of the technical issues of wood, and will not rot or warp. The Paleo range also comes in three contemporary colours, Sand, Gold and a subtle blue Blauw and is available in a variety of formats to create interesting laying patterns. Gravity is available in three on-trend colours - Gravity Steel is new for 2016, and is a light grey with an attractive texture and aesthetic appeal, along with the new Gravity Dark which features a superb dark colouration which is

difficult to achieve in other materials. With an authentic appearance, and a gently riven texture, Lucent is now available in three attractive colours; Copper, Blue, and new addition Cotswold, which displays classic buff shades combined with a light texture. Natural Stone Namera limestone paving comes in two colours, the cream coloured Tala Sand and golden Pyramis Gold. The delicate quartz veining and inclusions found naturally in the stone give it a charm which is sure to create a statement in any setting. This range also has coordinating steps. The Lorento range offers two new marbles to the Stonemarket offer. Perlino has soft tumbled edges in an elegant warm, creamy, golden tone. Ivory on the other hand is a soft white grey marble. Coordinating steps are available for both colour options. Nordic Ash is an additional colour to the contemporary Cordara range which has proven popular with landscape designers. This linear range replicates the look of decking, but with the

strength and durability of stone. Reconstituted Stone 2016 sees a new generation of Millstone and Yorkstone paving with the introduction of Millstone NEXTpave and Yorkstone NEXTpave. Re-engineered without losing the much loved character of the stones, NEXTpave features a patented base design to enable the installation on a sand screed bed to reduce installation time by up to 50%. Continuing to install on a traditional mortar bed allows landscapers to take advantage of perfect uniformed joints. Driveways Trident Permeapave is a patented block paving system with the same finish and texture as the popular Trident Paviors, designed to manage heavy rainfall with ease. The blocks allow rainwater to pass into a specially designed sub-base and then drain away naturally, rather than into hard pressed drainage systems. This sustainable alternative is available in the new colour Maple and three block sizes. The popular Trident Project Packs are now available in Trident Sierra and Trident Burnt Ochre, in a three size project pack for increased ease of installation and reduction of waste on site.
Building on a successful year Available mid-January, the new Natural Paving Products brochure presents the company’s entire range of paving, colours and finishes. Highlights within the new product offering include Vitripiazza, an exclusive range of Italian vitrified porcelain paving, and Pavetuf Priming Slurry, a new addition within the highly successful Pavetuf range of installation and maintenance products. Other additions to the Pavetuf range include an easy to apply Gloss Sealant, which dries with a wet look. Two new specialist Pavetuf blades are also on offer, one designed to cut sandstone and another to cut porcelain, both blades have been approved by the Organization for the Safety of Abrasives (OSA). The Premiastone range also sees a host of new textured additions; including a dark flamed Noir Gold granite option and a dark Onyx quartzite, available in single size packs and project packs respectively.
Walling The popular Excelsior range with its polished, smooth textured finish is now available in walling. This can add a new dimension to gardens by creating low planters and decorative walling that will blend seamlessly with Excelsior paving. It comes in three colour options; Barley, Ash and Dalmatian. Steps Both the Nordus and Arctic Granite ranges now have a bullnosed step in their product offering. The Arctic Granite step is available in Glacier, Dusk and Midnight, all with a flamed finish, and the Nordus steps are lightly brushed, available in Gris and Schwartz, with a bullnosed edge detail. www.stonemarket.co.uk

Xylella fastidiosa
There are known outbreaks of Xylella fastidiosa in Italy, France (Corsica and mainland France). An outbreak in the UK could lead to destruction of host plants within 100 m and a 10 km movement ban for host plants for five years. Landscapers, designers, retailers and anyone directly importing plants are now subject to the same stringent measures as growers and suppliers. A new plant passporting obligation for all ‘professional operators’ has been introduced, which requires that the movement of all ‘host plants’ across the EU must be accompanied by a plant passport. Anyone importing host plants from the EU needs to ensure they are accompanied by a plant passport confirming they have been sourced from disease free areas/sites. Be vigilant for signs of X. fastidiosa and report any

Structure, being the important basis for the backbone of a planting scheme, brings popularity to strong shapes such as Cupressus sempervirens ‘Pyramidalis’ and Juniperus scopulorum ‘Blue Arrow’. These bring height to a planting plan, whilst Buxus sempervirens – topiary balls and cones, look spectacular in a formal but low-maintenance gravel garden. Other shrubs enjoying renewed popularity are stalwarts

Plant of the Moment
The issue of plant health has never been higher on the Government agenda and the stakes have never been higher for industry. We face virulent pests and diseases like Xylella, which have strict control measures, extending to the whole supply chain, in order to protect the trade. With this in mind, the HTA, in partnership with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), have developed a one-day conference, which will be held at the National Agri-Food Innovation Campus at Sand Hutton, near York, on Wednesday 17 February. The conference aims to clarify everyone’s roles and responsibilities across plant health issues, bringing together nurseries, retailers, specifiers, landscapers, inspectors and regulators. The content will provide delegates with all they
The Horticultural Trades Association’s (HTA) new monthly plant promotion - ‘Plant of the Moment’ has launched. The new consumer campaign has evolved from the existing Plant of the Month campaign that will end this year, and will run for two years from January 2016 to December 2017. Month by month this new promotional plant calendar will highlight planting ideas as well as plants at their best to help customers create gardens that are full of colour and interest throughout the year. The opening address will be made by a senior Government representative, who will outline the Government’s view on the importance of preventing and controlling pests and diseases that could damage the UK environment. Delegates will hear what growers and their customers need to do to fulfil their plant health responsibilities and mitigate risks. The cost for HTA members is £25.00, plus VAT and for nonmembers is £50.00, plus VAT. Greening Grey Britain At a RHS press conference this month the RHS released details of the ‘RHS Greening Grey Britain Garden for Health, Happiness and Horticulture’ designed by leading garden designer and BBC presenter, Ann-Marie Powell. Greening Grey Britain is an RHS call to action to get the nation to transform hard, cold grey areas into living
planted-up beautiful places, to improve lives and help the environment. To date, more than 1,300 people have pledged to plant up an area of grey to green, helping the RHS reach its target of 6,000 pledges by the end of 2017. Ann-Marie Powell’s colourful front-garden design celebrates the health and wellbeing benefits of Greening Grey Britain. With bright borders to lift the spirit, benches to relax and share a chat on, soothing water features, a bee-friendly perennial meadow, edible plants in pots and a stylish kitchen garden, ideas contained within this frontgarden setting can be incorporated both in private and community gardens. Ann-Marie Powell told The Landscaper: “Gardens and gardening do more good to heart and soul than they are ever given credit for, and I’m delighted to be helping the RHS shout about this at the world-famous flower show. It’s important that my take on a front-garden theme is full of take-home ideas both for individuals and for communities, and I hope it will inspire visitors and viewers to get involved in Greening Grey Britain. Too many people are paving over their front gardens but anybody can have a beautiful front garden.”

The company specialises in annuals, perennials, pot plants, primroses, pansies and cut flowers. Kunming Hongzhihua Gardening Co. produces and sells cuttings and cut flowers of chrysanthemum. The company’s chrysanthemum cuttings are mainly exported to Japan. In 2014, the export volume was 140 million pieces, which accounts for over 90% of China’s total export volume of these products and 42% of the total import volume of Japan. Shanghai Yuanyi Seedling Co. Ltd. is a leading horticultural enterprise which initially worked with plug seedling production in China. Bedding plant seedlings are the main products of the company, which include annual and perennial flowers, hanging plants, potted plants, ornamental vegetables and fruit and mosaiculture material.

In 2016 there is a new and practical expansion to current buying options. They will offer plant buyers the possibility of ordering per half layer – a change prompted by the rapidly changing purchasing behaviour of European consumers. The option of ordering half units grants customers more flexibility, and the possibility of responding adequately to those changes in purchasing behaviour. Around 150 nurseries have a stand and show their products, including avenue trees, ornamental plants and
