Showing the way Last year’s IOG Saltex was a successful trade show. The attendance figures reversed the trend of previous years, attracting more visitors from the UK as well as overseas. The NEC is a more commercially attractive venue than the show’s previous home in Windsor. Centre of the country with excellent rail, road and air links, the NEC offers the chance of real growth. BTME Harrogate was also a successful show. Attendance was up on previous years and there were more exhibitors. Harrogate is a beautiful city which partially explains the exhibitions popularity.
However it is BIGGA’s truly excellent education, conference and awards program that really stands out as a major attraction. The IOG and BIGGA are excellent organisations that work well for their members – they provide education, qualification, good communications and support. Their staff work with the highest level of dedication and enthusiasm. Two successful trade shows – but there is an elephant in the room. Many exhibitors expressed a view that a merger between the two shows would be beneficial, especially as they are now so close together on the calendar.
It is a fact of life that both trade shows represent a considerable level of investment from both associations. It is also true that the shows are the major source of revenue for both organisations. There is a way they can achieve this and maintain revenue. A merged two-day show at the NEC in November has many advantages and offers the prospect of attracting more exhibitors, not only from the UK but from the rest of the world – it could become real competition for the German shows. IOG and BIGGA could work on this together, share the investment and share the profits. In January BTME in Harrogate could be the event for education, conferences training and awards. IOG and BIGGA again could share the investment and the profit.

Beauty, function and sustainability The Landscape Institute’s annual conference on 3 and 4 March 2016 will focus on ‘beauty, function and sustainability in the age of austerity’. The conference in partnership with the Department of Landscape, University of Sheffield, will consider the challenge of how we value beauty and whether we can afford it in an age of austerity. An impressive line-up of speakers includes Caroline Julian, deputy director of think tank ResPublica; Professors James Hitchmough and Nigel Dunnett, from the University of Sheffield, who were co-designers of the planting at the iconic London Olympic Park; Andrew Grant, who led the design team on the award winning Gardens by the Bay project at Bay South in Singapore; Professor Brian Evans of The Glasgow School of Art. The conference takes place at the University of Sheffield over two days and will explore the balance between beauty and austerity.

Colas has added to its National Highways Sector Scheme (NHSS ) tally with accreditation under scheme number 18 for the natural environment and landscape including ecology. This achievement puts the contractor in prime place to take on roadside environmental works around the UK, areas which contribute a great deal to the country’s biodiversity. Highways England alone is estimated to be responsible for more than 50 million trees and shrubs along with substantial grassland alongside its road routes. Local government can more than match those numbers and effectively has its own roadside parkland estate that needs to be cared for and contained. The NHSS accreditation confirms that Colas and its personnel are qualified to take good care of that environment, its horticulture and wildlife in a manner that is safe to its employees and members of the public. NHSS 18 activities are wide-ranging and include weed control, application of pesticides, grass and wildflower seeding, tree pruning and other arboriculture and mechanical vegetation removal.

Funky gibbon habitat While Twycross Zoo is amongst Warwickshire’s most popular visitor attractions, a major part of its remit is animal welfare and conservation. Construction is under way of a new £1.8 million gibbon habitat at the zoo, focusing on the development of a 30m long moat surrounding four islands that will create a safe and stimulating environment for the gibbons. The innovative design for the new gibbon habitat at Twycross Zoo means that its inhabitants won’t be enclosed at all. Instead, they will be contained on the series of four islands that make up the new habitat by a 6-8m wide moat, calculated to be beyond the gibbons’ maximum jumping distance of five metres.
The project involved relocating the gibbons to other areas of the zoo so that the existing enclosure could be demolished and excavations for the new habitat could begin on the same site. Once the ground had been levelled the moats could be dug out then compacted to create a level surface so that the lining could be laid. The waterproof lining chosen for the installation was PondGard EPDM lining from Firestone Building Products. The company’s technical services team worked closely with specialist contractor, Turtle Productions.

For the first time courts in England and Wales will be required to follow comprehensive sentencing guidelines.

Neal Stone, Policy and Standards Director at the British Safety Council, told The Landscaper: “We broadly welcome the new guidelines and in particular that in future that three factors will be key in determining fines for health and safety offences: the degree of harm caused, the culpability of the offender, and; the turnover of the offending organisation. Having consulted our members we were able to say in response to the Sentencing Council’s proposals that there was overwhelming support for this change which would help ensure greater consistency in the sentencing practice of our courts and a level of fines that fit the crime. “This long overdue change is specifically in relation to the level of fines imposed and in certain cases the use of imprisonment as a sanction. What is clear is that the courts have on occasions failed to properly take into account the seriousness of the offence in weighing up the appropriate penalty. “To date the largest fine imposed in Great Britain for a health and safety offence – £15 million – was on Transco in 2005. That unenviable record may soon change. “The new guidelines, which will in some cases, result in far greater fines than courts are currently imposing, reflects a shift in not only public opinion but concerns among certain members of the judiciary, including Lord Thomas, the Lord Chief Justice. As he has made clear in recent appeal court decisions the purpose of fines is to reduce criminal offences, reform and rehabilitate the offender and protect the public. “If the changes in sentencing practice do not help achieve these objectives – particularly ensuring compliance and discouraging law breaking – then they count for nothing. What we will need to see is clear evidence that the new guidelines have played their part in improving health and safety. Extra money through increased fines going into Treasury coffers should not be the name of the game. The objective must be to reduce the deficit of fatal and major injuries and occupational ill health.”

Greens transformed Positioned in the surrounding countryside of Shropshire Market Drayton Golf Club which was established in 1906. Simon Cotterill – head greenkeeper believes that Limagrain UK has been instrumental in helping him transform the greens. “Between 2008 and 2010 we made some improvements to the greens which resulted in better drainage and surfaces. Because we had drier greens we thought that we would try and get rid of the meadow grasses so we started taking advice from Limagrain on how to take meadow grass greens over to bent grass greens. They have been great and have been helping me with a number of things including varieties, planting regimes, overseeding and getting the best out of the Graden machine initially and later a sorrel roller type speed seed.” To improve the overall quality of the grass species, Simon overseeds with Limagrain’s MM9 grass seed, which is a product of the MM range – one of the most respected brands in the UK amenity industry. The MM9 grass seed produces a fine, dense sward for the ultimate playing surface, and Simon has certainly noticed the improvements. “From 2010 until 2013 we overseeded just once a year with

the MM9 and were putting on 5g per square metre through the Graden. In 2014 we started using 2g a month in May, June, July and August with an overseeder and we did the same this year. “MM9 has extremely quick germination and we’ve seen a massive increase in grass coverage and density in the last five years on the greens. We now have greens dominated by up to 70% bent grass instead of annual meadow grass. “It’s safe to say that I would absolutely recommend Limagrain.” www.limagrain.co.uk
New displays new features The Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Flower Show Tatton Park returns to Cheshire’s 1,000-acre deer park for its 18th year, with a host of displays and new features. Some of the highlights at this year’s show include a new Evolution Gardens category, all new Talks Theatre in the Floral Marquee where you can garner advice from the likes of gardening expert and TV personality Carol Klein, and The Vineyard, an area dedicated to tastings and English wine heritage. Art takes to the fore as a curated collection of sculptures surround a champagne bar to enjoy Art in the Garden, while staff from Manchester School of Art design unique decorations for Fools and Follies, transforming a well-known clump of trees - which has provided the backdrop for many an RHS Tatton garden - into an exploration of the magic and fantasy surrounding the ‘Folly’. Continuing to fly the flag for youth in horticulture, the RHS Young Designer of the Year competition is back, this year following on the RHS trend of Health, Happiness and Horticulture, while green-fingered pupils create their own tributes to their favourite musicals in the School Gardens display. In addition, the RHS and Cheshire Agricultural Society have announced that the combined ticket, launched in 2015 to provide access to both the Cheshire County Show in June and RHS Flower Show Tatton Park in July, will continue again this year. The show will run from 20 to 24 July. www.rhs.org.uk/tatton

Getting on track John Deere has approved the use of Camso rubber tracks on its Gator utility vehicles in Europe, following their availability in the US for several years. An XUV 855D Gator equipped with a Camso UTV T4S four-track system supplied by UK distributor Supatracks was recently featured on the company’s stand at LAMMA 2016. Designed to extend the versatility and all year round use of these popular all-terrain vehicles even further, the Camso tracks reduce ground pressure by up to 75 per cent to less than 1 psi and take less than two hours to install in place of the wheels, with no other modifications required. Track widths are 318mm (12.5in) in front and 356mm (14in) at the rear. The tracks are steered and therefore minimise disruption of the soil surface when driving off-road. Camso tracks are manufactured in Canada by the same company that supplies units for John Deere’s 8R, 9R and new 9RX four-track Series agricultural tractors. Camso is the world’s leading maker of tracks for farm and construction vehicles as well as snowmobiles. Track systems provide better weight distribution and maximum flotation on all types of off-road terrain. The 25hp XUV 855D Gator 4x4 has a standard top speed
of 32mph (52kph) and features true on-demand four-wheel drive, activated by a dash-mounted electronic switch, power steering and all-round independent suspension, adjustable at the rear. Ground clearance on the tracks is increased by around 45 per cent to 406mm (16in), while total payload and towing capacity remain the same at 635kg and 680kg respectively. The Gator’s standard deluxe Mauser ROPS frame can be upgraded to a full glass cab if required, and models can be ordered with a variety of other factory and dealer installed options and attachments. These include tool carriers, cargo box dividers, a front mounted load rack, a bull bar and side extensions. Price of the Camso UTV T4S Track System, which is available to order from the John Deere dealer network, is around £3750 .

Mirror-like pond created After a number of improvements were made to the stunning eighteen hole golf course at Exeter Golf and Country Club, course manager John Parr encountered a problem with the newly built pond on the eighteenth hole. To find a solution to the problem he sought the advice of Sherriff Amenity. Located on the edge of Devon’s historic capital, Exeter Golf and Country Club, is one of the finest eighteen hole golf courses in the South West. Designed by five times Open Champion James Braid, the course offers year-round play, pristine greens and state of the art facilities. Standards are extremely important to this prestigious club and it is for this reason that plans were put in place to make some significant alterations to the golf course. Of which, was the installation of an impressive pond on the newly re-designed eighteenth hole. However, after the initial filling, the water started to discolour so John decided to get in touch with David Chammings – amenity specialist for Sherriff Amenity. David visited the site and identified the problem immediately. “At the initial consultation, it was clear to see that the lack of natural water flow into the pond was the cause, as algae

had already begun to build up after a couple of weeks, leaving the water discoloured,” he said. Following the site visit, David devised a monthly programme which included Sherriff Amenity products LakePak WSP and Black Out. LakePak WSP is a concentrated microbial product containing a proprietary blend of bacillus bacterial strains that biodegrade nutrients, organic matter and hydrocarbons to reduce foul odours and sludge in water. Renowned for improving water clarity and quality, LakePak is also non-toxic to fish, humans and other animals – making it the perfect product for countryside based Exeter Golf and Country Club. To further enhance the aesthetic qualities of the lake, David decided to use Black Out because of its ability to transform pale, off-coloured water to a decorative, mirror like black colour. This highly concentrated lake and pond colourant also poses no threat to wildlife as it does not harm or discolour any of the lake’s residents. It works by acting as a shading barrier on the surface of the water to inhibit algae’s main food source - ultraviolet light, whilst allowing other light sources to pass. Black Out gets to work straight away and John has been extremely impressed with the results. “Just days after the programme started, there was a remarkable visible difference to water quality, and the Black Out has given us a great mirror finish, as well as keeping the lake healthy,” he said. www.sherriffamenity.com

Victoriana wins Sales of bespoke structures from Griffin Glasshouses in its 50th year have been at record levels and the key driver has been continued consumer demand for the Victorian style which has led to a new development for 2016. The key reminders of this historic period are highly decorative spandrels, steep pitches to roofs, narrow glass panes and highly styled finials and ridges. In an effort to reinforce this the company is launching a new roof specifically for lean-to constructions with a 35 degree roof pitch. “It is more practical to fit as a lean-to without compromising the Victorian style,” Linda Lane, manging director of Griffin Glasshouses told The Landscaper. In 2015 the company launched new Victorian styles workbenches with high decorative cast aluminium legs. “It is all part of this increasing demand from gardeners for a nostalgic look to their glasshouses but made using thoroughly 21st Century no-maintenance materials. They are all produced from the highest quality, maintenance free aluminium at the Ropley factory. All bolts and fixings are completely hidden and the frames powder coated to any colour the customer chooses.” www.griffinglasshouses.com

Tested to the edge
Ecofield run three tracked Norcar A75’s from it’s base next to The National Arboretum at Westonbirt in Gloucestershire. The investment in the tracked version of the 45hp articulated mini-loader has meant they have been able to successfully deliver solar farm deer fencing contracts over the winter.
18
www.landscapermagazine.com
They have a Bryce Suma HD1 post driver with a 400kg drop weight mounted on the first ever tracked A75 allowing them to drive 12 foot 8 inch strainers and gate posts without a problem whilst a second tracked A75 is set up with a Quick Fencer with deer netting attachment to can carry 2 x 100m rolls whilst unrolling and tensioning the primary roll. A third tracked A75 is set up with pallet forks and a 4 in 1 bucket for materials handling and any ground works needed. They also run a dynaset compressor with air stapler off the rear hydraulic services so stapling the netting takes a fraction of the time of hand nailing. This set up enables them to complete around 500m of deer fencing a day when conditions allow. They have tested the Norcars to the edge of their ability and they have exceeded expectation in terms of what they can drive through and how they handle loads of around 1000kg through mud which is regularly over the tracks. They have got through mud that tracked skidsteers could not cope with because their track profile is less aggressive and they are still only two wheel drive rather than the permanent 4wd with locking differentials that the Norcar benefits from. Attachments make the machine much more valuable as an asset because it can do so many types of tasks. As well as the fencing kit they have an earth auger, cultivator, flail mower, tree shear and various grabs plus disc harrows and a side shift back hoe with 2.5m dig depth on order. This means they can keep the machines working throughout the year not just completing the hedge, tree, cultivation and seeding on solar farms but in other sectors such as small scale forestry, conservation, estate maintenance and ground works. www.norcar.co.uk

for community garden projects, international schemes, excellence in public and commercial outdoor space and a special lifetime achievement award. The Grand Award, the most celebrated award of the evening, went to James Basson MSGD for Le Canebiers (pictured left) - a new French garden deeply rooted in Provençale culture and the Bastides. Majestic in scale and ambition and with a great sense of place the judges had no hesitation in awarding Les Canebiers The Grand Award. There was a unanimous decision to give John Moreland FSGD’s garden for Newton House (pictured) the Judges Award as an almost faultless example of traditional values. The judges said: the impressive garden conceived from scratch was a ‘very beautiful transformation with a fantastic sense of place, excellent scale and proportion and a design that sits effortlessly in the countryside setting”. Arabella Lennox-Boyd MSGD took the Historic Garden Restoration Award for the garden at Eaton Hall, which the judges felt was arguably one of the most important garden restoration projects in the UK in recent years. Developed over 24 years, it includes 88-acres of gardens and a 9-acre lake. The judges called the project a “masterclass in design and planting” and remarked on the “exhaustive historical research” saying the result was “traditional, contemporary, ecological and practical in equal measures and provided a legacy for future generations”. Emily Erlam, a newcomer to The SGD Awards, was granted two accolades. She received the Small Budget Garden Award for a garden for a beach house converted from an old marine testing station (pictured below) that the judges described as ‘thoughtful, naturalistic and fun’. news of the two ‘Future Designers’ for a modern country garden concept that the judges called ‘skillful and confident.’ She shares the title with joint winner David Loy. The three, now-familiar, Residential Garden prizes went to John Moreland FSGD, Keith Pocock MSGD and Charlotte Rowe MSGD who took the Large, Medium and Small Residential Garden Awards respectively. Other awards won on the night included: John Wyer FSGD in the Public or Commercial Outdoor Space category; Juliet Sargeant MSGD in the Hardscape category; Stuart Craine MSGD in the Pocket Garden category; Joanna Midwinter in the Paper Landscapes category and Joe Swift MSGD who won the People’s Choice Award – the only award in the competition determined by public vote. The Designing for Community Space Award, which is granted to a community project, went to the Braehead Community Garden in Scotland.
Miss Harvey, who is a former student at Derby College and then trained at the Royal Botanic Kew Gardens in London, said: “We have got big plans for the gardens at Broomfield Hall and our aim is to make these a notable visitor attraction. “The students are obviously involved and are gaining valuable work experience to improve their employability skills. However, we would also be grateful for the input of local people who can volunteer some of their time to be part of this exciting project. “Our main volunteer days are Mondays to Wednesdays and volunteers are obviously welcome to work as many hours as they wish with us. “We have already had interest from people including keen gardeners, some who have retired and others who are keen to progress into the industry. “As the work progresses, we aim to open the grounds more frequently and welcome people to tour the picturesque grounds and learn more about the different trees.” Future courses at Broomfield Hall will include a new RHS practical skills course for keen gardeners. For more information visit www.derby-college.ac.uk or telephone 0800 028 0289. For more information on volunteering opportunities, please email : Samantha.harvey@derby-college.ac.uk

Volunteers Appeal! Derby College is appealing for volunteers to help restore the historic gardens at the Broomfield Hall campus. The restoration programme has been launched by Head Gardener Samantha Harvey ( pictured) who is working with Horticulture students at the College to develop the gardens into a visitor attraction. The gardens were created when the original hall was built in 1873 by industrialist Charles Schwind. They still retain the Victorian layout and the plan is to improve these further with several developments including contemporary herbaceous planning, designing; planting a sub-tropical area and installing colourful rainbow planting.

Children are still involved in the stone quarrying industry in India, and in particular in the production of cobbles. Located at the heart of the sandstone quarry belt in Rajasthan, Budhpura is a major source of sandstone cobble and particularly vulnerable to child labour. No Child Left Behind is a ground-breaking project taking place in Budhpura, India, with the aim of creating Child Labour Free Zones (CLFZ). The project’s vision is a world where every child has the right to an education and to enjoy their childhood. Behind the project are a collective of NGOs – Manjari, India Committee of the Netherlands (ICN) and Stop Child Labour – supported by European stone companies Beltrami, Stoneasy. com and London Stone. Whilst the real work ‘on the ground’ is being done by Manjari, (with guidance and funding of ICN and Stop Child Labour), the European stone companies involved – Beltrami, Stoneasy.com and London Stone – are able to support the project through funding and by leveraging their own supply chains. This multi-faceted approach means that throughout the whole supply chain and extended throughout the communities in sandstone production areas, children are being taken out of work and enrolled in education. www.nochildleftbehind.co.uk

Vibrant vegetation Award-winning landscape and garden designer Thomas Hoblyn will bring a Tamil Nadu-inspired kitchen garden to the Discovery Zone at RHS Chelsea 2016 for the not-for-profit organisation Lifeworks Global. The Lifeworks Global Garden will depict a life-changing environmental solution for the impoverished villages of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. The garden will show how organic farming practices, traditional crop production and water-filtering techniques could help rid families of malnutrition and replenish natural resources in the region. Designed as a kitchen garden, it will sit within a distressed architectural frame, representing a typical Tamil Nadu village home. The frame will be teeming with vibrant vegetation to show how the regeneration of the area will come from the people within the home. While the weathered structure will signify the prevailing poverty, the exuberant planting bursting from within will be symbolic of the land’s potential rejuvenation. Lofty orange jasmine and mango trees set among a towering sugar palm will indicate the importance of introducing new trees to the region to provide shade, encourage rainfall and improve the micro-climate, while traditional crops such as chillies, ginger and tomatoes will symbolise the powerful alternatives
to the harmful ‘cash crops’ that have dominated the province and depleted the land in recent years. On an area of bare soil either side of the house, characteristic of the barren, over-farmed soil that existed before the intervention of the new farming principles, sits a GrifAid family Aquafilter - a low-cost water filtering system that could help transform the region. The planting palette will be arranged over three levels with plants embedded into every possible crevice of the structure to show how potential growing space is embraced in the community. On the upper level a robust sugar palm, will rise through the architecture frame alongside a Breadfruit and Mango tree . Smaller trees positioned in the middle level will include dwarf banana, Papaya and Tamarind whilst the lower level will feature green cardamom ginger, black pepper and dramatic snake gourds (supported on vernacular style columns. Thomas Hoblyn told The Landscaper. “Having been to India and witnessed some of the very issues that Lifeworks Global are trying to resolve, I was only too keen to help. Using organic techniques to help heal the land is something I truly believe in. The project also indulged my passion for working with tropical plants as discovered whilst training at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

“The best ever!” BTME 2016 was hailed as an unprecedented success by the organisers The comprehensive Continue to Learn education programme broke attendance records, smashing through the 3,000 barrier. Over the five day programme 3,034 seats were occupied as Greenkeepers, Groundsmen, Golf Club Officials and Golf Club Owners took in topics from basic agronomics to the vagaries of Generation Y. The three day exhibition, with over 150 companies occupying five Halls of the Harrogate International Centre drew 4,046 unique visitors who made a total of 5,890 visits. Strong evidence of just how seriously the turf care industry takes the exhibition. The undoubted highlight of the week was the BIGGA Welcome Celebration, expertly hosted by Naga Munchetty in Harrogate’s historic Royal Hall. Outstanding achievement in greenkeeping was celebrated and BIGGA crowned three award winners: The St Andrews Links Trust team won the
Championship Greenkeeping Performance of the Year sponsored by GBR Technology. 20 year old Jack Groves of Broadway Golf Club won the Jacobsen sponsored Young Greenkeeper of the Year. The Minchinhampton Golf Club team were awarded Greenkeeping Achievement of the Year, an award sponsored by Pitchcare. The Golf Business and Industry Convention (GolfBIC) was a welcome addition to BTME, popular with exhibitors and delegates alike. BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton summed up the week: “Another hugely successful event, every day busy and further confirmation of how important BTME is in both the turf care and golf industry calendars. Over 4,000 individuals have taken the opportunity to network, learn and get up to date with products and services. The positive impact on golf courses and sports facilities will be clear to see.”

BTME’16 saw the launch of Soil Harmony’s new marketing programme for their advanced nutrition system along with a new range of high performance seed mixtures for sports and fine turf. Soil Harmony’s new marketing materials present the individual products in four colour coded ranges that can be used individually or combined to implement the full Soil Harmony programme. The four new categories are: Soil Correctives, Biological, Turf Nutrients and Advanced Turf Health. Marketing Manager Kathryn Laverack explains the reasons for the change, “During 2015 we went through a process of assessing perceptions of the Soil Harmony product range and system. We found that our clients were very happy with the performance of the products but that we were less successful in communicating to potential users, the relative ease of adoption and the benefits of using individual products.” “The Soil Harmony approach is a scientific one but both the products and the programme recommendations are designed for ease of use. So we have reworked our marketing, developing new product literature, displays and packaging, focusing on making the product functions and benefits more easily identifiable.” “We have had a great response to the new look at BTME, with lots of positive comments on both the message and quality of the presentation which is now judged to be more in line with the high quality of our products and approach.” www.soilharmony.co.uk

BIGGA education partner Vitax Amenity promoted the new opportunities for linemarking technology in golf course traffic management at this year’s show. The next generation Briteliner Arrow, unveiled at BTME 2015, is already being applied successfully for a range of duties at clubs across Britain, including boundary, hazard lines and driving ranges. The benefits of speed, accuracy and cost efficiency that linemarking machines bring to course management are compelling reasons for greenkeepers to commit increasingly to this technology. groundcare duties. Launched to wide acclaim, the specially developed linemarking machine carries an onboard computer that can be uploaded with software for marking areas for whichever sports are required. A GPS receptor positioned on the pitch talks to the onboard computer via Bluetooth, which triangulates Swozi’s position with help from its own GPS unit, directing the linemarking machine to the appropriate line selected. Deviation from the marking map by even a few millimetres triggers the head to adjust to maintain an accurate line. If the machine moves too far out of correct alignment, the computer tells the linemarker to stop spraying until the operator positions the machine to the correct marking pattern. Leaving a lasting impression on sports surfaces everywhere is the innovative Supaturf EvenSprey Club sprayer and its 300 sister, geared up to deliver measured applications accurately and fuss free. The TFS25 tank free system linemarking machine brings further convenience and refinement to marking out and is ideal for applying the Vitax Supaturf artificial paints range just launched.

Wessex As seen at BTME this year, the Wessex ProLine CRX MultiCut mower has won What Kit? tractor mounted mower of the year award. Here’s what they said: ‘The CRX MultiCut concept offers a roller mower with full-width rollers front and rear, a finishing mower with four fully castoring wheels or a combination of the two - all in one machine. It can be frontor rear-mounted, with sideor rear-discharge, and has the option of a mulching mode. As a roller mower the CRX offers similar characteristics to the Wessex RMX roller mowers, but in a scaled-down version suitable for tractors from 20hp upwards, and the high blade tip speed provides a fine finish. Where a high degree of manoeuvrability is required, the castoring wheels get the mower into awkward areas when the CRX is front-mounted to a compact tractor. The rear roller produces a striped effect. Side or rear-discharge is achieved by altering the baffles beneath the deck and the side-discharge option allows operation in conjunction with a side-collection hose. Height adjustment is simple. The CRX is available in 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.4m widths with the options of frontor rear-mounting and sideor reardischarge. Overlapping rotors give 100 per cent blade coverage and Tornado Vents are fitted as standard, creating superior airflow in all modes of operation.’ www.wessexintl.com

mowers
Estates Manager and Head Groundsman of league two Exeter City FC, Clive Pring, has been with the club for about nine years. Until recently the mowing and pitch cleaning regime at St. James Park was done solely with ride-on mowers. Looking to improve the soil-based pitch, Clive and his team of three spent a considerable amount of time trying various walk-behind mowers to achieve that end and making sure they made the right choice of mower to suit the surface. They arrived at the Allett Regal 36 which they found perfect for tight turning. Regarded by groundsmen around the world as the ultimate large-area single cylinder mower, power steering with independent braking on the Regal 36 provides the exceptional control and turning ability while hydrostatic forward and reverse drive gives infinitely-variable mowing speeds and cuts per metre. “We took delivery of two Allett Regal 36 mowers from our local dealer Mason Kings in July 2015,” says Clive, “and they have been ideal for the work. We also learned that the new Allett RM34 Stadium Rotary Mower was coming into production and naturally, being pleased with the performance of the two Regal mowers, we wanted to see what the RM34 could do for us.” Exeter started with one Allett RM34 and found it extremely versatile, superior in the clean-up as well as being used as a match preparation
mower, with the extra width saving a great deal of time. So impressed was the club with the RM34 they ordered another and now the clean-up takes as little as three quarters of an hour without stretching the groundscare team. “The cost is small for pieces of kit that take us to another level,” adds Clive, “the Allett mowers put us up there with the Premier league in terms of caring for the turf but I think these mowers can be used even further down the club pyramid to create and maintain better playing surfaces.” www.allett.co.uk
Advanced Turf Technology (ATT) has increased its cassette offering, whilst keeping pace with triplex mower manufacturers upgrades. The TMSystem is unique and by using the appropriate chassis adaptor kit, is fully compatible with all main-stream makes of triplex greens mowers and lightweight fairway mowers, like John Deere, Jacobsen and Toro. The chassis is also interchangeable with ATT’s own 22” INFiNiSystem. This ATT turf management system consists of a range of 10 SMART cassettes which enable different maintenance activities to take place - aeration, brushing, de-thatching, scarifying, top dressing, grooming, levelling and mowing. It is a truly multi-functional piece of kit.

The pedestrian version out performs any conventional mower. It cuts better; tracks straight; follows undulations; has low weight; can be battery powered or configured as a hybrid; is maintenance and environmentally friendly and offers overall value for money. With the pedestrian version comes additional multifunctionality. Whilst all the same SMART cassettes can be slotted into the universal carrier, this unit can also be used as a hybrid, generated by an engine, or made over to pure battery power – for which the unit has been commended for low noise output and its green credentials. www.advancedtt.com

New battery powered pedestrian models Etesia has launched three new battery-powered pedestrian rotary mowers – the PACS push and PACTS single speed 46cm models and the NACS push 41cm model. All new models are now also available with the new rear roller kit for easy, effortless striping. The three new models offer extreme versatility with the ability to cut, collect and mulch without the need for an accessory. Users will be capable of mowing with or without collection in all conditions as well as undertake high-quality mulching, and with the new rear roller kit now stripe for presentation. Built upon the DUOCUT concept of combining 100% collection and 100% mulching decks together, the new PRO 46 models deliver high performance without compromising the results of either of the functions. By crushing the grass finely, even if it is long and wet, both models excel in their collection abilities and the grass box is always filled to capacity. With no tool or blade change necessary; simply place the removable insert under the deck if you want to mulch and remove the insert if you prefer to mow - with or without collection. The smooth surfaced insert completes the shape of the deck and enables the grass to move easily for superior mulching. Both the PACS and PACTS have a cutting width of 46cm with seven easily adjustable cutting heights ranging from 28-85mm. The NACS model has a 41cm cutting width.
The Three new models come complete with a grass box capacity of 50 litres. The new battery-powered pedestrian models are driven by a brushless electric motor powered by a 36V/21Ah lithium polymer accumulator with an activation button and a charge display. Zero emission of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, smoke and particles ensure silent and environmentally responsible mowing. Cost Effective • 33% energy savings in relation to petrol • Low maintenance cost: no belts, filters or engine oil • Low operating cost: 41% savings in three 3 years (at the rate of four hours day of work, with an additional battery) These operator-friendly features combined with renowned high performance, has resulted in Etesia’s rotary mowers becoming the number one choice for many landscapers, groundsmen and local authorities. the awards were split into three separate categories – pedestrian, ride-on and tractor-mounted/towed. The ride-on award citation said: “This has been the hardest category to judge. There are several worthy winners and we met on three occasions to try to decide the winner. In the end it was the versatility of the John Deere mower that clinched it. “Out-front rotaries are a first choice for many contractors carrying out council work and are a favourite with operators. The 1500 Series TerrainCut offers an exceptionally comfortable work station, with a commanding view of the work ahead and well laid-out controls.” Originally launched at IOG SALTEX 2014, there are five 1500 Series TerrainCut models equipped with powerful, high-torque, three-cylinder diesel engines from 24 to 36hp, four-wheel drive, high-capacity rotary mower decks and a new optional grass and leaf collection system. They are designed to mow and collect thick grass at high speeds and still produce a quality cut. Featuring a compact design for manoeuvrability and easy transport and a robust hydrostatic transmission, the range meets the various needs of landscapers, contractors, groundsmen, greenkeepers, local authorities and other amenity turf customers. There is a choice of durable 7-Iron 1.5 and 1.8m (60 and 72in) side- and rear-discharge decks, with an optional mulching kit, and a John Deere factory fitted cab is available as standard on two models. Key user-friendly features include cruise control, a comfortable seat, Twin Touch pedals for the transmission and an electro-hydraulic deck drive clutch, while an air ride seat is optionally available. The quick-attach GLC1500 grass and leaf collection system has a hopper capacity of 600 or 900 litres. The collector’s fast dump speed, 203cm (80in) high tip and 83cm (33in) long reach features also

The Turf Tiger and Tiger Cat big capacity ride-on mowers are soon to be become Turf Tiger 2 and Tiger Cat 2, with enhancements of comfort and speed. Machines are added to the range as well to make it as comprehensive as possible, to give the purchaser the opportunity to get exactly the machine they want at the price in their budget, ranging from £5000 in the smaller range ride-ons to over £12000 for the top machines. There are specialised aspects as well – STM offer the Humus low-profile flail head to fit on the top of the range 25HP Turf Tiger, resulting in the only centre-mounted zero-turn flail mower on the market. Then, once the flail requirements are completed, a traditional rotary deck – up to 72” width – can be fitted. As regards SW and SWZ [Zero-Turn] pedestrian mowers, you are looking at 32” up to 52” rotary cut decks, plus options of cylinder, flail, Humus Safety Cut . . . and even a snow plough. Engine sizes are from 14 up to 22HP. Undecided about whether to walk-behind or ride on? Have a look at the excellent V-ride model. 36” to 61” rotary decks available. Incline work? The twin-wheel SWZ 48 is the recommended

low centre of gravity machine, capable of coping with reservoir-side inclines [see picture]. If you’re looking at trickier areas than that – then the RoboFlail range could be perfect for you. Five machines in the range – 20” cut Mini, petrol or diesel 48 [the latter with an underslung flail deck], or two specialised machines: the RoboFlail Vario that is designed for taking Cat 1 linkage attachments, and the RoboFlail Plus for hydraulic attachments . . . all designed for tricky terrain and awkward access areas. And SCAG also added the Giant Vac machinery to their range. There is a small vacuum-and-bag unit for yard and estate work, then blowers from walk-behind [three models] to truck mounted and two sizes of trailed. Demonstrations are always recommended – ideally on your site. In the meantime, videos of the machines, and all the details, are on www.st-mach.com. A load of bollards Cool white, warm white, very bright, blue white! By Martin Bennet Bollard lights have been in use for many years and form part of the familiar landscape around public spaces, hotels, golf courses and car parks. Usually they are lit all night. To keep electricity costs to a minimum, Metal Halide or Son / Sodium lighting, which tend to have a very orange / yellow appearance, are traditionally used. Although efficient, both of these light sources have drawbacks in that they take time to warm up and therefore cannot be used with PIR Motion Sensor systems plus if there is a fault they are not end user serviceable. Today illuminated bollards using replaceable high output LED bulbs can be just as bright with less cost, no maintenance and provide instant light when it is needed which means they are compatible with photocell and PIR systems. In addition, they are much more versatile, being available in different colour temperatures from a warm white, yellow halogen colour light to a more crisp cool white, right up to a very bright, daylight white which is often described a

‘blue-white’. Bollard lights usually consist of a tubular or square body, topped with a polycarbonate (PC) lens with angled louvres inside to deflect the light source downwards (anti-glare). Commonly they are made from extruded Aluminium or thick Stainless Steel but they can also be found made from Cast Iron or Hardwood such as Teak. Most are not strong enough to act as a barrier and can easily be damaged if struck by a vehicle in a car park for example. To withstand damage they must be made from metal at least 2.5mm to 3mm thick, ideally with a protective barrier installed in front if placed in a vulnerable position. Some installers also reinforce the bollards by filling the tubular body with concrete when installing in ground root mount versions, which also adds further stability. Commercial Bollards can vary in price from £100 to £500 and upwards depending upon materials used. Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel is considered the best option but is more expensive than Aluminium bollards. Martin Bennet is the Founder of Lumena Lights

Club Benefits The history of Cotswold Hills Golf Club can be traced all the way back to 1902 when golf was played on the nearby common of Cleve Hill. After continuous problems with both sheep and people walking on the course, the club felt that it was time to make a change. In 1976 a new course was created on 157 acres of land in Ullenwood, Cheltenham, and since that day the club has gone from strength to strength and is considered to be one of the best courses in the county. The club has hosted the Men’s County Championship on four occasions, the English Ladies’ Amateur Championship and in 2012 it also hosted the England Golf County Boy’s finals. It is easy to see why the club is at full membership capacity with a waiting list of up to three years. A great deal of the club’s success over recent years can be attributed to its experienced greenkeepers. Wayne, the course manager, has been there for 13 years and deputies Mark Freeman and John Stewart have been at the club for 22 years and 12 years respectively. Wayne Vincent course manager (pictured) has been in the industry since leaving school, admits that only the finest products will do for Cotswold Hills and this is why he chooses Limagrain grass seed. “I’ve been using Limagrain products for nearly my entire time at Cotswold Hills. I’ve tried other suppliers in the past but the Limagrain products seem to work the best for us here. We’ve always got the results we wanted from them and
46

I’m confident we will continue to do so. It’s like they say - if it isn’t broke, then don’t fix it,” he said. Limagrain’s MM9 grass seed mixture is the secret behind the beautiful greens at Cotswold Hills. This mixture, commonly used for summer overseeding and autumn renovations of top quality golf greens, is relied upon by greenkeepers throughout the UK and beyond. It is renowned for producing a fine, dense sward for an excellent playing surface and Wayne believes it has been a stand out performer – especially in the club’s geographical climate. “It’s always difficult trying to get establishment on greens because of the environment here. But the best results we’ve tended to have is through hollow coring. Once we’ve cored, we then do our overseeding with the MM9 and this gives the seed a better chance to establish. “We use the MM9 anywhere between three and six times a year and have always had successful results. It produces a good colour all-year-round, it’s hard wearing and is disease resistant.” For the course’s par 3 tees, Wayne uses Limagrain’s MM22 which is ideal for divotting, repairing and renovating areas that are subjected to high levels of wear. He also uses MM13 on tees and fairways which features excellent drought resistance and also offers low maintenance requirements. “All of the Limagrain products we use have great consistency year in year out and from my point of view I just know that we are going to get the grasses and seed that
seeds
we want. This is a fairly cold site and in the past we have struggled to achieve establishment and growth, but since working with Limagrain, we have the best possible start,” said Wayne. As well as being full of praise for Limagrain’s products, Wayne was also quick to compliment the company’s customer service. “The service has always been very good in providing us with the products we need – there’s never a hold up in getting anything. The technical side of it is very good too; they are very hands on with us at the golf course and always offer excellent advice.” www.limagrain.co.uk
Bloom from spring to first frost Pictorial Meadows has launched its annual seed mix range which guarantees to transform gardens and bloom from spring to first frost. Available to buy online at their seeds are available as 6g packets for the home gardener (costing £4.50p) – but most is sold as bulk sales to local authorities and landscapers looking to create large scale meadows such as the iconic Olympic Park. These mixes are designed to be sown in situ on an average garden soil and will quickly start flowering with distinct ‘waves’ of colour right up to the first frosts – providing a rich nectar source for all pollinators and putting a smile on the face of everyone who sees them! These mixes can be used in virtually every conceivable garden and landscape situation – from planters and borders, to large scale urban or rural projects. They are increasingly used by land owners and managers to form an effective and dramatic antidote to large expanses of grass or municipal plantings. www.pictorialmeadows.co.uk
Ground breaking Tomtato! Product developments from the specialists at Thompson & Morgan are paving the way for the easiest ever route to fresh home grown produce. Whether you’re short on time, space or knowledge, there’s an easy solution for you this season. Following success with its groundbreaking Tomtato, a hand grafted plant producing both potatoes and tomatoes, T&M has launched Egg & Chips a world first in duo grafting. Gardeners can now grow aubergines and potatoes on the same plant. What’s more the potato ‘root stock’ gives the aubergine part the extra energy needed to crop successfully under UK conditions. You don’t need a greenhouse to grow Egg & Chips®, a large pot on a sunny patio will produce perfect plants. £14.99 for one Egg & Chips®, £19.99 for two. Changes in EU regulation mean that for the first time in a long time, Thompson & Morgan is now able to offer mixed vegetable seed varieties in the same packet, creating the easiest route to success on the veg patch and the longest harvest with no need for successional sowing. The All Season Collections take the hard work out of crop planning. Each is made up of several toptasting and topperforming F1 varieties that can be sown in one hit, but will crop at different times to give a harvest window of up to 36 weeks. The All Season Leek Collection for example, offers a nine month harvest from a single sowing of three trusted varieties – Lincoln, Oarsman and Below Zero. The collections have been based around the most popular crops grown by British gardeners, including peas, beans, broccoli, sweet corn and cabbage. The collections are the perfect solution for novice gardeners and those without the time (or skills!) for detailed crop planning at the start of the season. Trial results and customer feedback for Potato Jazzy have been so impressive it now comes with a Double Money Back guarantee if T&M customers fail to produce 35 potatoes or more from a single tuber grown in an 8litre growing bag. This new growing method was hit upon during T&M technical trials, and was found to increase yields by up to 186 per cent. The growing concept really opens up potato growing to everyone. All you need is a sunny doorstep or deep window ledge to produce a worthy home-grown crop. Pricing for Jazzy starts at £3.99. Seed varieties mentioned are available from selected garden centres now. Threat to woodland security Despite promises to improve the amount of woodland cover and tree planting in the UK, the amount of new planting in England has dropped from 3,300 hectares in 2013-14 to 2,400 hectares in 2014-15 and unconfirmed analysis of 2015-16 suggests that this figure could drop to as low as 1,600 hectares. This potential 50% drop in three years has angered growers who now face the alarming prospect of dumping trees which they have been growing to fulfil predicted grant orders which have not materialised. UK tree growers constantly face an uncertain market and threats from potentially devastating new pests and diseases such as Xylella fastidiosa, which could prove more devastating than the Chalara fraxinea outbreak of 2012. The industry, through the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) Tree and Hedging Group, alerted UK Government to the risk of importing Chalara back in 2009. The industry has tried to convince Defra and its agencies of the need to develop a secure and stable market for UK-grown trees and to ensure plenty of lead time for public procurement projects. Despite repeated attempts to explain to civil servants the lead time for tree growing, the simple message that it takes time and commitment to grow trees does not seem to be getting through. Without a secure pipeline, the industry cannot supply UK trees in a sustainable way, and we will therefore import more and more trees. Based on interaction with landowners and other customers, the trade believes that new technological ‘improvements’ in woodland and tree planting grant administration by Defra and its agencies are to blame. If the cumbersome and complex grant system is not improved immediately, the knock on affect will be less seed sowing and planting for next year which will threaten the survival of UK growers. Carol Paris, Chief Executive of the HTA told The Landscaper ‘No grower wants to destroy unwanted stock, and it angers us that all our efforts to convince government to take a simple, common sense approach to tree planting grants are falling on deaf ears. As an industry we are doing everything we can to grow trees in the UK, for the benefit of the family-run businesses and to protect the UK countryside, but we cannot grow trees

commercially when the market is so unstable. We need a system which is fit for purpose and does not create this breakdown in the supply chain.’ The market for UK tree growing for amenity and landscape woodland planting is estimated at £300 million.
£10m green infrastructure improvements
New trees and green spaces could be set to help grow Liverpool city region’s economy thanks to the development of a cutting-edge new Green Infrastructure Prospectus for the city region. Green Infrastructure (GI) is the green lungs and arteries provided by our woodlands, parks, street trees, rivers and canals. The new Prospectus identifies how creating carefully targeted new GI can help support new jobs and economic growth, and using a ground-breaking methodology sets out the business case for a series of major green projects that are ready for investment. Eleven sites and projects across the City Region have been identified for a multi-million pound GI investment
in the Prospectus. This will lead to the creation of 200 hectares of trees, green space and new nature habitats which could directly benefit the local economy by £17.9m and have a wider impact of up to £176m according to research by consultants Arup. The new Prospectus has been commissioned by Liverpool’s Local Economic Partnership and Nature Connected, the Local Nature Partnership and has won backing from major private sector developers such as Peel Group. Richard Mawdsley, Development Director at Peel Group, told The Landscaper “The role green infrastructure plays in driving growth is critical. It’s is a vital ingredient in helping to create environments where people and businesses can thrive. What helps to drive growth is the creation of highly desirable places.

Inexpensive and effective Gravel is one of the most attractive, economical and versatile surfaces on earth. But without help, it’s inclined to move around, creating ridges and ending up where it shouldn’t. CORE Drive creates a naturally porous stabilising base into which the gravel sits - and stays. It’s easy to lay, inexpensive and effective. CORE Path and CORE Drive gravel stabilising products are becoming increasingly popular, many of the UK’s largest house builders are now incorporating them into their latest developments to create SUDS compliant driveways, pathways and patios that meet all current ‘new build’ regulations. One of the main reasons the products are so popular with landscapers is the fact they’re so easy to retro-fit. If you have an existing gravel, tarmac or concrete driveway there is no need to excavate, after minimal preparation simply lay the panels over the existing surface, click them together and fill with gravel. Even if your starting from scratch it’s still an extremely cost effective way of creating a beautiful gravel surface that is perfectly firm underfoot, suitable for disabled access that simply won’t move around or rut. www.corelp.co.uk

The team specified Wienerberger clay pavers in both Incana and Toledo Waterstruck colours via Hardscape – The landscaping materials supplier. The pavers, which have been set in a herringbone arrangement, provide an interesting juxtaposition between the paved area and the vertical exteriors of some of the surrounding properties. The brief had additional design criteria including the retention of two mature London plane trees. These large deciduous trees required detailed specialist paving design and close cooperation with arboriculture specialists and the contractor. Chris Arrowsmith, from Churchman Landscape Architects told The Landscaper “We’ve also been very happy with the specified pavers. Highly valued for their stunning floral displays and fresh, glossy, evergreen foliage and with dozens of varieties available, you’ll be spoilt for choice, so pick from camellias in shades of pink, red, white and cream. Broads and Fens. Nick Carter, Wetlands Project Officer for the Trust told The Landscaper “We are working with the Environment Agency to develop reedbeds and grazing marsh to provide habitat for marsh harriers and bitterns and other wetland birds, in compensation for the potential loss of coastal reedbeds in East Anglia because of rising sea levels and climate change”. BWFP is deeply engaged in restoring British ecosystems, here in Norfolk and throughout the UK. Nursery owner Linda Laxton adds “Knowing that the plants we grew, from seed collected on site, are helping to protect our local wildlands is incredibly rewarding”. At our nursery in Norfolk we have almost 400 species of native wildflowers, all of known provenance. This means that we can tell you where the plants originate from, down to the nearest few metres, helping us to advise customers on what will be the most suitable plant mixes for their project, whatever the size. And even though gardens supplied by us have won over a dozen medals at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, it is when our plants are used to restore some of our
damaged ecosystems that we feel most proud.” www.wildflowers.co.uk
British Plant Fair 2016 Warwickshire based Hawkesmill Nurseries, who grow over 3.5 million plants throughout the year with a range of over 1200 varieties, have a plant for every season and business alike. The family run business who have been growing and supplying plants to garden centres and nurseries for 40 years this year, will be showing a good selection of collections and promotions at the forth coming British Plant Fair on Thursday March 3rd. Here you will be able to see examples of the Season Starter Collections as well as the Herb and Wild Flower Collections. All plants will be available to order for immediate delivery or as advance orders, enabling you to reserve stock for the weeks ahead making sure you don’t miss out on these super opportunities “We look forward to the British Plant Fair every year says Richard Evans Sales Director, Richard continues “It’s a show
Hillier Garden Centres has topped a record twelve months by clinching the title of Multiple Garden Retailer of the Year in the Oscars of the gardening industry – the Garden Retail Awards - at London’s Grand Connaught Rooms. The award was presented to Hillier Garden Centre Director, Chris Francis, in recognition of the dramatic turnaround in the fortunes of Hillier’s garden centre business.

horticulture that’s gaining momentum and it is really good to see British Growers all in one place. From a retailers perspective, it’s a great way of viewing lots of stock and placing orders for immediate delivery or of course reserving for when the stock is needed, for example Mother’s Day and Easter, or even right through the year!” www.hawkesmillnurseries.co.uk
Progress on Sunday Trading Momentum on the issue of Sunday Trading is gathering pace with news of progress in Parliament. The Government’s consultation response which quotes the HTA extensively, is in favour of devolving power on Sunday Trading laws to local authorities. This could allow large shops, including garden centres, to open longer on Sunday. The devolution proposal was added as an amendment to the Enterprise Bill The reforms would give unitary authorities, metro mayors
and any new mayors appointed the power to determine Sunday trading rules that reflect the needs of local people and allow shops and high streets to stay open longer. The Government also intends to strengthen and further protect workers’ rights to opt out of Sunday working. The proposed changes will also enable more competition with online retailers. Under the current legislation, which is over 20 years old and before the era of online retailing, large stores with over 3,000 sq ft of trading space are prevented from opening for more than six hours. Commenting on the latest update HTA Chief Executive Carol Paris said “This is a question of choice – both for retailers and consumers. We have worked hard to ensure that the voice of the industry is heard and it is reassuring that the points that we, and individual members have made, have been included in the consultation response. It is encouraging that progress is being made towards updating this law which is no longer fit for purpose.”
Vision for Ornamental Horticulture The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) has launched a three year project with the aim of identifying an international vision for the ornamental horticulture industry. AIPH Secretary General, Tim Briercliffe told The Landscaper, “Globalisation has had a major impact on the ornamental horticulture industry. We have seen the traditional markets for flowers and plants slow down while at the same time production and consumption of flowers and plants in developing countries has increased rapidly both to export to developed countries and to meet the growing demands of their own national markets. It seems that the power-base for the production and market for ornamentals is changing. This brings with it challenges and opportunities for growers and the whole supply chain. This project has been developed to understand these challenges, forecast future changes in the structure of the industry and to identify opportunities to grow the overall market.” Organisations participating commit to sharing what they know and learning from each other as together they shape the vision for the future. Following research the project has identified a top 10 list of countries which will be studied in more depth. These countries have been identified as those likely to present the biggest opportunities for the industry in the coming years.
