Pioneering spirit Today’s housing challenge is compounded by a financial crisis and an ageing population, as well as new global pressures from climate change. We must rediscover our planning heritage, rethink the garden city principles for today and construct affordable attractive, sustainable new communities. Twenty-seven new towns were built across the UK after World War Two, including Stevenage, Harlow, Milton Keynes, Corby, Cwmbran, Newton Aycliffe, Peterlee and Cumbernauld. These, called garden cities because their layouts included large amounts of green space, were designed to deal with an accommodation shortage caused by bomb damage, stagnation

in the construction industry, returning service personnel and a baby boom. Creating garden cities can provide the opportunity and the economies of scale to truly fulfil the ambitions of sustainable development by delivering multiple benefits including social housing, zero carbon design, sustainable transport and local food sourcing. New communities also offer a powerful opportunity to introduce governance structures that put people at the heart of new communities and hand over ownership of community assets. Our garden cities provide some of the most desirable places to live in the UK today. The lessons from garden cities

and new towns are not new, but they need to be restated and brought together in the new and radically changed political context. We must recapture the pioneering spirit of the garden cities and the important connection between building high-quality homes and creating new jobs.

Built around the operator Doosan Construction’s new DX19 Mini excavator is built around the operator and provides optimal ergonomics. The cab features large windows and narrow pillars to maximise all-around visibility, operator comfort and safety. The large door width offers convenient access, which is made even easier as the control console rises completely out of the way when the operator is taking their seat. There is ample space for the feet with a flat floor for easy cleaning with floor panels that can be easily removed for service purposes,

ergonomic pedals and easy access to all controls, storage box and cup holders. In addition, when not in use, the foot pedals can be folded back to further increase room for the operator’s feet. The control panel permits an easy check of the main parameters (including auto engine shutdown, auto glow plugs countdown, auto cab lights switch-off and RPM meter). Other features include an easy-to-operate gas spring-assisted light

and rigid frame front window, keyless ignition for optimal safety, a battery kill switch for storage and to prevent theft and an automatic slew brake for safe parking and transportation. www.doosanequipment.eu

Frogheath Landscapes takes the title Frogheath Landscapes was crowned Supreme Winner at the APL Awards, sponsored by Bradstone, which took place at The Brewery in London this month. The Sussex-based company took the overall award for its project which involved landscaping the gardens surrounding a rare timber and brick 16th century sheep barn in the Brede Valley. The project, also the winner of the Project Value over £250,000 category, included features such as a formal lawn punctuated with clipped Quercus ilex and exuberant borders, secluded areas enclosed with stilted hornbeam hedges, a walled potager with a contemporary fruit arbour, dipping pond and rustic raised beds. Frogheath Landscapes also created an orchard under planter with a wildflower meadow and a gentle walk through a nuttery of local filberts and Kentish cobs. To promote sustainability all bricks, tiles and Yorkstone are reclaimed, all lighting LED and a rainwater harvester provides irrigation. The judges commented, “It is a fabulous piece of landscaping work that has exquisite detailing especially within the planting. It is simply stunning fitting the house and its surroundings perfectly.” Other category winners included Arun Landscapes, RG Landscape & Construction Ltd, James Bird Landscapes, Timotay Landscapes, Big Fish Landscapes, Planet 14 Landscapes and Landform Consultants. New for 2016 awards were presented to suppliers where the winners were Coles Nurseries, Palmstead Nurseries, Chessington Garden Centre, Green-tech and 2 Circles. Will Burberry from Gardenscapes, who won the APL Worldskills Competition received a special award. Hosted by landscaper and horticulturist, Chris Collins, and HTA Head of Horticulture, Raoul Curtis-Machin, the awards celebrated the high standards of landscaping achieved by members and demonstrates the APL’s commitment to quality landscaping. Chris also provided the audience with an entertaining tour of his horticultural exploits in Cameroon and Japan. The APL would like to thank all sponsors – headline sponsor Bradstone, Andersplus, Classiflora Zelari, Easigrass Green-tech, Platipus, Renson and Sovereign Turf for helping to make the awards a great success.

Eliet team up with Rigby Taylor As the years go by, all turf is subject to ageing where grass dies thus reducing the density of growth. This gives weeds & moss the opportunity to take over the lawn and while scarifying and spraying can help to briefly interrupt the decline, the only long-term solution is to rejuvenate the grass - the key to successful turf is overseeding. With the Eliet Overseeder you can renovate tired and thin grass in no time at all by adding new grass. This inexpensive alternative can take place quickly and guarantees a visible result in less than a month. The grass will be available for normal use immediately after overseeding which for example is extremely important to sports clubs. Since the new grass seed is inserted between existing vegetation when overseeding, it is essential for the success of the treatment that the seed can germinate as soon as possible and that growth opportunities are maximised. The patented operating principle of the DZC 600 ensures ideal conditions for the introduction of seed: The DZC 600 Overseeder from Eliet makes high tech overseeding possible at an affordable price. Eliet have teamed up with Rigby Taylor and every New DZC 600 overseeder purchased (until 30th June 2016) will be supplied to the end user with a 20kg bag of Rigby Taylors R25 CRT seed worth ÂŁ100.00. Prepare for devastation!

BesserTrim, a leading supplier of garden machinery, has launched the DECIMATOR, the newest addition to their Grass Cutting System. This new innovation uses latest technology to transform your brushcutting experience. The DECIMATOR is available to hire at HSS and is now available for landscapers to buy direct at www. thedecimator.eu. The DECIMATOR is a 4mm cable reinforced cutter, designed to cut through weed and brambles. It lasts longer than nylon line and tackles a more diverse terrain, so there’s no need to change cutters. The DECIMATOR cable reinforced cutters make light work of weeds and shrubs and comply with all relevant safety standards. DECIMATORS work with a BesserTrim Professional head, which can be fitted to petrol-powered brushcutters that can take a blade. It takes less than two minutes to install and full instructions are on the website. The BesserTrim Grass Cutting System features a unique keyhole locking system, which allows the DECIMATOR cutters to swivel. This reduces the load on your gearbox and clutch and allows for greater cutting power. The cable reinforced DECIMATOR cutters wear down slowly and evenly with use, saving you time, money and frustration attending to your brushcutter head. Brian Child, BesserTrim MD told The Landscaper “We said goodbye to broken spools and tangled line with our Grass Cutting System. Now we’re making it drastically easier for you to remove undergrowth. You won’t be disappointed. We didn’t call it the DECIMATOR for nothing!” You can buy online at www.thedecimator.eu. Prices start from £12.50 inc VAT. What’s more if you buy two packs of cutters, you get the Professional Head completely free (for a limited time only so it’s kind on the wallet to get started. Happy Decimating! www.thedecimator.eu

Young Gardeners of the Year The team behind the Writtle College entry to the ‘Ideal Young Gardeners of the Year 2016’ competition have been busy making the final preparations to their Show Garden unveiled at the Ideal Home Show. The annual competition, which last year saw the Writtle team win Best in Show, a Gold medal and the People’s Choice award, sees six of the UK’s leading horticultural colleges go head-to-head, to create stunning sustainable urban gardens, that will be seen by a quarter of a million visitors at the Ideal Home Show. The event is organised by TV Gardener David Domoney, in association with the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community. The Prince’s Foundation sets clear guidelines for the garden design based on organic and sustainable principles and this year there is a new focus on education. The Prince’s Foundation has tasked the Young Gardeners with incorporating elements of an educational garden into the design which should aim to inspire young people to reconnect with nature.

Aerial Laser Maps High resolution aerial photography and 3D terrain maps created from airborne laser surveys are being used to design new golf courses. Creative Golf Design, an award winning firm of golf course architects, regularly downloads the highly detailed images from Bluesky’s online MapShop to provide a map-accurate base onto which course design and improvement plans can be drawn. The Bluesky height (LiDAR) data is also helping them to provide 3D context for their designs, illustrating changes in terrain as well as the location and extent of existing features such as boundary features, vegetation and woodland areas. “The Bluesky aerial photographs provide a mapaccurate base for our proposals and a real world context for our drawings,” commented Ken Moodie, Director of Chester based Creative Golf Design. “This not only improves our understanding of the site, informing the design, but also helps us communicate our design ideas to our clients. Using CAD software to manipulate LiDAR data, we are also able to produce a detailed 3D model and contouring of a development site, or existing golf course, on which we can overlay our design proposals.”

Scott Fraser, head greenkeeper at Easter Moffat Golf Club, has commented on the success of using ICL products on the stunning eighteen hole course in Airdrie, Scotland. Scott uses a combination of both granular and soluble fertilizers from ICL which include SeaMax, ProTurf and Greenmaster Pro-Lite Cold Start. “I use ProTurf on my tees and approaches - it’s been excellent and produces good colour. The same goes for SeaMax - I was looking for a good seaweed product. I’ve used a lot of seaweed products before but I wasn’t getting the desired result. That has changed since I’ve been using SeaMax, plus it is tank-mixable with other products that we use - you can put it on with a bit of Primo Maxx for example. “I’ve found that it’s great for the roots and helps with the colour as well as the density. You don’t normally get a visual effect with seaweed but you do with this. You can use it right through the season, even in winter, and I apply it on a monthly basis. “I first started using Greenmaster Pro-Lite Cold Start two years ago and it’s probably the best product I’ve ever used. We are situated quite high up here and we have struggled to get a bit of density on the greens in the past, but since we’ve been using it on the greens they have been without doubt the best they have ever been. “This year, I’ve used it on some of my tees as well because they were struggling a little bit and they have really come on. Now we don’t have any problems at all,” he said. www.icl-sf.co.uk

Celebrating the life of Capability Brown Royal Gardener and the grandfather of the profession of landscape architecture, Brown was an engineer, entrepreneur, salesman and extremely effective businessman. It was the combination of these skills which led to his success and his shaping people’s picture of the quintessential English countryside that is recognised throughout the world today. This new Festival, funded by a £911,100 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and managed by the Landscape Institute, brings together for the first time a range of organisations to tell the story of this great man with more Brown sites made accessible for a wide range of audiences, and volunteers supported to develop their skills to help people understand the landscape as much as the house they may be visiting. The memorable nickname ‘Capability’ is thought to come from his commenting to potential clients that their estate land had great “capabilities”. On launching the programme, Ceryl Evans, Festival Director said: ‘Brown’s amazing career consisted of his advising at around 250 sites covering an area of around 200 square miles, running a business stretching across England and Wales.

Most effective concentrate Roundup’s newest weedkiller to hit the shelves, is its most effective concentrate formula yet, offering even better performance and value for money. Roundup Optima+ will treat 50% more weeds than its predecessor, Roundup GC, of the same size. It can be used to treat quick growing annual weeds and especially deeprooted perennial weeds, killing most weeds with a single application. Absorbed through the leaf and stem, killing right down to the root, Roundup Optima+ will not affect surrounding soil and non-target plants so is safe to use to treat weeds in and around fences, trees, driveways and flowerbeds. It can also be used for lawn renovation and vegetable bed preparation. Perfect for weed control all around the garden, Roundup Optima+ is the best value concentrate weedkiller for widespread problems. It is available in 140ml, 280ml, 540ml and 1000ml packs, all of which feature a new easy-to-read label design and a no mess child-proof measuring cap. Don’t miss Weed control - next issue of The Landscaper.

“We are delighted to have so many of these sites taking part in the Festival as they will be helping to tell the story of the impact and importance of this landscaping genius”

Optimistic outlook Apprentices revealed as key to business expansion New research released to mark the start of National Apprenticeship Week has found businesses place apprentices at the heart of their plans to rise to the top and rank hiring the right staff as the most important factor in helping them grow. The research also showed that managers hiring apprentices were five times more likely to believe the company would expand rapidly, than those that don’t. Two thirds (61%) of managers in growing firms felt that hiring the right staff or having employees with the right skills was the most important factor in realising the company’s ambitions. The new independent research for the Skills Funding Agency found that the right people and skills are ten times more important to businesses when it comes to expansion than access to finance. National Apprenticeship Week launched with an event at London’s Shard designed to encourage more businesses to take on apprentices. Loud and clear message

The underlying message of ‘having more people, playing on better pitches, more of the time’ was loud and clear as The Football Association announced its Pitch Improvement Programme (PIP). Along with partners, Redexim Charterhouse Turf Machinery and Rigby Taylor, the association has officially launched its £8 million scheme to help improve more than 2,000 natural turf football pitches from the National Conference League down. Part of The FA’s Strategy for Participation and Development, the four-year PIP scheme will enable grassroots clubs to access discounted products from two of the industry’s leading suppliers - Redexim Charterhouse for machinery and equipment, and Rigby Taylor for grass seed, fertilisers, line marking paints and machines, as well as other consumable products. The programme will be supported by a range of partners including the network of Institute of Groundsmanship regional pitch advisors, professional and semi-professional groundstaff and coordinated by the respective county FA. It will also include a range of measures to help develop the skills and knowledge of the volunteers and groundsmen including seminars and workshops. Interested clubs need first to contact their county FA to find out how to start the ‘ball’ rolling. Commenting at the launch, Rigby Taylor’s Executive Chairman Chris Clark said: “Our Official Supplier status to the Pitch Improvement Programme provides a fantastic opportunity for grassroots football clubs to benefit from of our market-leading products that are the result of years of research and development. PIP gives these organisations a unique opportunity to make considerable gains at relatively low cost.”

Successful results Richard Dexter, Head of Grounds and Gardens at Oakham School, has reported successful results from using Limagrain grass seed. “Oakham School has had a very long relationship with Limagrain and were even using it before I started working here. I’ve been here for nine years and have been using their products throughout that time. “We use Limagrain’s MM50 solely for cricket pitches and then on the winter pitches, we use MM60 and Action Replay. The Limagrain grass seed provides us with good and fast germination, it always colours nicely through the winter and more importantly for me it’s hard wearing and fits our business extremely well.” The three Limagrain products used by Richard are popular choices amongst the company’s extensive range of grass seed. MM50 is the preferred choice for intensively used cricket wickets and is used from club cricket right up to Test Match level. Consisting of a three way Dwarf Rye mixture, MM50 excels in wear tolerance, speed of establishment, recovery and tolerance of close mowing. MM60 is ideal for winter pitches such as football and rugby. The four-way ryegrass blend contains top rated cultivars, which together produce a sward that recovers from scarring and divot damage. Superior disease resistance along with good all year colour make this the mixture of choice for many grounds managers.

All four trimmers have a free-rotating bump feed cap means that the cutting head can be rested on the ground during use without being worn away; a lightweight aluminium shaft; and a quick adjustable handle for maximum comfort, balance and control. The 30cm (with a single speed option) and 33cm (with two speeds) models have a 2mm line diameter, whilst the two 38cm models (with variable speeds) have a 2.4mm line. All models have a dual line which lowers vibration and cuts faster, and easily slots into the contoured eyelet, which reduces nuisance breakage of the tough nylon line.

EGO’s European marketing director, Steve Roskell, commented: “Our 2015 launch season showed us that users are seeking an alternative to petrol and electric products”. Prices of the new trimmer start from £129. www.egopowerplus.co.uk

Stamping out rural crime Law-breakers across rural Oxfordshire villages are thinking twice before carrying out agricultural and construction machinery thefts or taking part in anti-social behaviour thanks to Kubota’s RTV-X900 utility vehicle. The sturdy RTV has been loaned to Thames Valley Police to allow the force to patrol miles of countryside and protect farms and local businesses from being targeted by criminals. Thames Valley Police is the first police force in the UK to introduce an all-terrain vehicle to its fleet and the impact is already showing after six months, with the force seeing crime rates fall rapidly thanks to the constant presence of police officers being able to access areas of land that were previously out of bounds or difficult to access. www.kubota.co.uk

Chelsea - designs revealed The designs for The Sun Flower Square, the industry garden led by Peter Seabrook have been unveiled. The floral exhibit in the Grand Pavilion features four model garden displays, each 4m x 4m square, the same size as the average front garden in Britain and based on the successful gardening campaign ‘Love the Plot You’ve Got’. At the time of writing, 70 different companies are contributing to what will be the first cross industry exhibit at RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Lovania have designed a stunning outdoor space which brings the ‘Room Outside’. The central feature in the garden is a dining table with an alpine centre piece complete with place settings consisting of garden trowels and forks for cutlery. The Children’s Corner of the garden will consist of brightly coloured planted blocks, fairy gardens and a water feature. The garden will also feature a green roof planted with alpines and trailing plants, a Living Wall using heuchera and herbaceous plants and some planted pallet furniture. Members of the Horticultural Trades Association contributing to this garden include Nursery Fresh, Ball Colegrave, Butters Group, Allensmore Nurseries, Skylark Nurseries, Seiont Nurseries, Wyevale Nurseries and Cramden Nurseries amongst others. There will also be a large number of new plants introduced on this garden especially for the show.

Members of the Garden Centre Association, who are celebrating their Golden Jubilee this year, will present a hanging garden with a massed display of hanging baskets hanging from pergolas above ground filling patio pots holding some of the baskets. The effect will be to fill the cube of space with colour, achieved by featuring popular summer bedding flowers and foliage available to home owners in May. Garden centres that are contributing include Squire’s, Coolings, Perrywood, Cowell’s, Van Hage, Gordale, Old Railway Line, Sunshine, Ruxley Manor, Millbrook, Brookhouse (Barton Grange), Alton, Thurrock, Wembley, Aylett’s and Meadow Croft. Pots are kindly being provided by Apta and some baskets being donated by Desch Plantpak Ltd. The World of Science and Technology Breakthrough horticultural science and technology features in key educational area of the Great Pavilion Impact of nutrition, cultivation, locality and more highlighted by nine pivotal exhibits. Coventry University demonstrates the benefits of gardening on our health. At this year’s Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show (24 – 28 May), sponsored by M&G Investments, the Discovery Zone, an area of the Great Pavilion dedicated to science and education, will investigate the way in which our health, happiness and community is impacted by horticulture and the world around us. From the importance of beans and pulses to the best plants with which to surround yourself, as well as tips on how to get as much as possible from your garden, the Discovery Zone offers visitors the chance to get up close and personal with a variety of scientific exhibits, including a special display by Coventry University on how to transform your garden into a ‘green gym’. More beans please! Due to the increased demand on food resources by an ever-growing global population, the United Nations (UN) has designated 2016 the ‘International Year of the Pulse’. Building on this demand, Capel Manor College has created ‘Beans, Beans’ to highlight the importance of this particular legume. Split into three sections, from a ‘rustic green wall’ to a ‘bistro garden’, the exhibit explains the reliance on pulses in some of the world’s poorest populations, as well as the capacity for increased pulse growth in the developed world, offering an alternative source of protein. Putting your best foot forward Coventry University’s ‘Healthy Gardens, Healthy Gardeners’ exhibit highlights the physical impact of gardening on the body, proving that – if done correctly – this undervalued form of exercise can offer green-fingered enthusiasts an extremely beneficial work-out. Featuring a motion-capture suit performing typical gardening activities, Coventry University will highlight all of the vital statistics involved in using your own ‘green gym’, demonstrating the benefits of horticulture as the means to an improved and healthy lifestyle. Understanding orchids ‘Love Orchids – the Story of Phalaenopsis’ by Double H Nurseries offers visitors a fascinating insight into how orchids grow, how long they take to develop, and even how flowering is initiated. A real eye opener, the nurseries’ education area aims to tackle the common misconceptions around orchids in the home, and looks at just how easy it is to care for them – with an experienced team on hand giving expert advice.

The peoples’ plants Sparsholt College investigates our role in the work of Plant Heritage by showing the multiple opportunities to support ‘plant conservation through cultivation’. Using plant material based on National Plant Collections and Plant Guardians from Hampshire and surrounding counties, the college aims to highlight the past, present and future roles of Plant Heritage and how we can all be practically involved. Six interactive computers will be used together with graphics to show the plants’ value and out-of-season features. Community culture Created for an India-based charity, the Tamil Nadu Kitchen Garden Project by Tom Hoblyn will demonstrate how the simple act of supplying seeds, Grifaid aqua filters and organic techniques can have a hugely positive impact on communities. The idea of ‘give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; show him how to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime’ is given a horticultural spin as visitors learn about how this process is helping communities become selfsufficient across the globe. Gesundheit… Love gardening but hate sniffling and sneezing your way through the hedgerows? Worry no more as ‘The Low Allergy Garden’ by the Royal College of Pathologists features a garden full of flowering plants, trees and shrubs not associated with respiratory allergies in humans. Experts will also be on hand to provide guidance on which plants to use in gardens frequented by respiratory allergy sufferers. Other highlights in the Discovery Zone include: • The British Ecological Society explaining how best to attract pollinators to gardens across the UK in order to tackle their globally declining numbers due to pesticides and the loss of suitable flowers. • Scotts Miracle-Gro presenting its Urban School Garden, featuring a playground theme with a wide variety of edible plants alongside picture boards to convey the benefits of school growing and the productive and enjoyable benefits an urban area. • Celebrating 125 years since the British Pteridological Society was founded, the fern society’s display will offer examples of successful combinations for dry, shady, damp and sunny conditions to ensure each visitor finds the right fern to suit their surroundings. Tickets are now available on 20 – 24 July: www.rhs.org.uk/flowershows

Improved services for turf buyers 1st January 2016 saw the merger of three major UK turf suppliers into a single organisation. Q Lawns in Norfolk, Turfland in Lancashire, Stewarts Turf in Midlothian now trade under the umbrella of Harrowden Turf Limited. The merger is a bold move for the Directors of Harrowden Turf Ltd. Almost a decade ago, Q Lawns was bought by a farming family from Northamptonshire. Three years later they acquired Turfland, followed in 2012 by Stewarts Turf and last, but by no means least, Spearhead Turf joined the portfolio towards the end of 2015. From a business perspective, each one of the turf farms is successful in its own right and each has a different set of strengths. These include things like proximity to road networks, ability to harvest all year round, naturally high rainfall for greener grass, digital marketing capabilities and strong sales teams; each of the sites has a different set of advantages for customers. Now that the individual businesses have merged, each one of them can have the best of all worlds. Of course, geographic location can’t be changed. Neither can the congestion on UK roads. But, turf can be sourced from nearest farm to the delivery address. That means less time on the lorry and fresher products for customers. It also means that haulage costs can be minimised and the savings passed on to buyers. Another advantage of the merger is weather-related.

If harvesting is disrupted on one farm because of poor weather, or if the demand for turf exceeds the harvesting capacity (as it sometimes does in the busy season) then there is an opportunity to draw from a different site. Has the merger improved services? “It’s early days as yet; “ Chris Carr from Q Lawns told The Landscaper, “we’ve not reached the busiest time of the year and we’re still testing our new computer software but I’d like to think that turf buyers are already seeing more competitive pricing from the group and are noticing the difference in service levels. This is a positive move from our Directors and I think it will change the face of the turf industry.” For more information about Harrowden Turf Ltd www.harrowdenturf.co.uk and let Chris know what you think on 07880 728258.

Next generation JCB is releasing four additional models, with operating weights of 4.8-5.7 tonnes. The midi excavators are available in conventional, reduced and zero tailswing configurations. The new JCB midi excavators feature 20 improved standard features and 20 new options, to improve productivity and performance on site. All four share the durable design proven on the larger machines in JCB’s next generation compact excavator range, with 100% steel bodywork and a sturdy four-plate dipper arm construction. The dig end is 100% bushed, leading to extended 500 hour greasing intervals. JCB has also revised the pin pickup points to work with a number of competitive bucket brands, while optional hydraulic or manual quickhitches can be specified for faster attachment changeover. JCB has developed a new range of ECO buckets, with a redesigned profile for easier filling and improved material retention. The excavators feature a redesigned dig end, with a longer main boom and shorter dipper arm, to provide up to 5% greater dump height for easier truck and site dumper loading. The upgraded hydraulic system also delivers up to 9% more bucket tearout force and 2% higher dipper arm tearout, boosting performance and productivity. The excavators feature an improved operator’s cab, with

the 57C-1 using the same structure as the larger 10 tonne machine. The cab is 18% more spacious and offers up to 11% more visibility, improving both comfort and site safety. Even in reduced and zero tailswing configurations, JCB’s midi excavators deliver impressive levels of comfort for the driver, with reduced noise and vibration levels and easilyreplaced flat glazing throughout. The biggest development in the cab is the adoption of a new display screen and control system, with an automotive style rotary controller allowing easy access to a host of systems and information. The operator can set auxiliary hydraulic flows for two separate attachments from the cab, while the menu mode button switches the rotary controller between throttle modes, including a one-touch idle function and menu mode. The cab is also offered with a new membrane switch panel, to control auxiliary flow settings, working lights, beacon, wipers and JCB’s 2Go additional hydraulic activation safety system. As with JCB’s larger JS excavators, the midi machines now have nine power modes available, including Eco and for the first time an H+ heavy digging mode. The machines can also be ordered ready for tiltrotator installation from the factory, with a programmable third auxiliary function. www.jcb.co.uk

New 1.9 tonne Mini-Excavator Doosan Construction Equipment has launched the new DX19 1.9 tonne mini-excavator. Providing a combination of high performance and compactness, the new DX19 model is designed to offer increased productivity, excellent operator comfort in a large and easily accessed cab and maximum durability and serviceability. The optimised hydraulic system in the DX19 miniexcavator makes the best possible use of the engine power available from the Kubota D722 diesel engine providing an output of 9.9 kW at 2500 RPM (ISO 9249). This results in fast cycle times, which are combined with smooth control of class-leading breakout forces, which include a digging force over the bucket (ISO) of 20.8 kN. Equipped with a cab, rubber tracks, long blade and bucket, the DX19 has an operating weight of 1894 kg. With the long arm, the maximum digging depth of the DX19 is 2565 mm, the maximum dump height is 2693 mm and the maximum reach at ground level is 4214 mm. This working range provides maximum performance and versatility in operating a wide range of attachments and the overall smoothness of the hydraulic system is further enhanced by boom and arm cylinder cushioning. The high lifting capacity and superior dumping height

34

offered by the DX19 ensure that loading trucks is an easy process, while the reach at ground level reduces the need to keep repositioning when digging. An optional certified ‘object handling package’, which consists of a safety valve for the boom and for the arm, a hooking device and an overload warning device is also available for the DX19. The new model is towable on trailers for up to 2000 kg, with transportability further enhanced by new tie-down points. When fully retracted, the retractable undercarriage on the DX19 allows the machine to go through narrow spaces; and, when fully expanded, it provides optimum stability for the excavator, especially when working over the side. Expansion and retraction are simple and easy via a switch on the control panel. In addition, to help dustpanning on the front, the long dozer blade significantly enhances stability at the front of the excavator, allowing the operator to make full use of the breakout forces that the machine can deliver. www.doosanequipment.eu

green roofs

Going green Today, 54 per cent of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 66 per cent by 2050. Projections show that urbanization combined with the overall growth of the world’s population could add another 2.5 billion people to urban populations by 2050, with close to 90 percent of the increase concentrated in Asia and Africa. The urban population of the world has grown rapidly from 746 million in 1950 to 3.9 billion in 2014. Asia, despite its lower level of urbanization, is home to 53 per cent of the world’s urban population, followed by Europe with 14 per cent and Latin America and the Caribbean with 13 per cent. Managing urban areas has become one of the most important development challenges of the 21st century. Green roofs have numerous social, economic and

environmental benefits and can contribute positively to issues surrounding climate change, flooding, biodiversity and declining green space in urban areas. The main benefits are: Reducing storm-water runoff as part of a sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) strategy Roof lifespan increase Reducing energy use Climate change mitigation Lessening the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) Increasing biodiversity and wildlife Improving air and water quality Reduced sound transfer Amenity space

Replacing lost habitat Blackdown bio-diverse green roofs provide the ideal opportunity to recreate or replace lost or missing habitat. Having a defined goal, i.e. re-establishment of birds such as the Black Redstart or encouraging the digger wasp Nysson trimaculatus, helps Blackdown specifically tailor the bio-diverse specification to those needs. Vegetation A wide range of plants can be incorporated into a biodiverse green roof depending on what is to be attracted to the roof. Typically the planting will be in the form of plugs, including drought tolerant wildflowers, herbs and grasses. Specialist seed mixes that will help replicate a specific habitat can also be used.

Substrate Blackdown bio-diverse substrate is ideally suited for this type of habitat re-creation. The substrate will be composed of recycled clean crushed bricks with a very wide granulometric distribution and a mineral based soil. By mounding the substrate and including habitat incidentals i.e. shelter stones, piles of mixed aggregates and partially buried logs etc, the completed installation can be made both eye-catching and varied. Waterproofing Waterproofing options typically include suitable rootresistant bituminous membranes from the Derbigum and Euroroof ranges. www.alumascroofing.co.uk

Natural beauty Colas Rail appointed Sky Garden to create a space of aesthetic natural beauty for their employees at Rugby, as well as add several benefits to the building itself. The living roof was a straight forward task for the installation team. A standard sedum blanket system with maintenance pathways was completed simply and efficiently, with Sky Garden installing thousands of similar roofs across the UK each year. A living wall is a more intricate system that must be installed methodically in order to get the stunning results we managed to achieve on this project. All materials were crane lifted to roof level, followed by the fitting of the aluminium framework to the wall. The top and outer frame was drilled into place first and the remaining vertical strips accurately spaced across the whole wall, keeping the whole framework square at all times. There was no bottom frame on this project in order to allow for free drainage of the wall into the riverstone border below. The horizontal pieces followed suit, with Sky Garden’s team taking their time to fit the frame with millimetre precision. Once the framework was in place it was time to

38

www.landscapermagazine.com

begin fitting the irrigation system. The pump, tank, waste water tank and fertiliser system were connected and the pipework was fitted through the left and right vertical aluminium frame. Once this was in place, the vegetation panels could be hooked and bolted in place. This was done methodically with each panel being numbered and bolted in to place from the bottom left and running across each row. This was a simple process at the bottom of the wall, but became more difficult towards the top as our installation team had to use scaffolding to reach the top heights of the framework. The final phases of the project consisted of plugging any gaps in the wall with spare plants, fitting the irrigation system horizontally across the panels and removing any protective layers from the aluminium. The final result was worth the hard work. The bespoke system was installed perfectly with no hitches. The living wall looks impressive already, but over time will fill out and flourish. Along with the sedum blanket, which will flower in the spring, the whole area will come to life with colour and vibrance. www.sky-garden.co.uk

green roofs

Saving water Green roofs help to counteract the consequences of increased areas of hard landscaping. They store rainwater, reduce water run off and delay discharge into the drainage system. This reduces pressure on local drainage provision, whilst water evaporation from green roofs helps to improve the local microclimate. Optigreen have been able to optimise the positive effects of a green roof in terms of water management. The result of

Meander board in the green roof build-up water is stored in a temporary reservoir and discharged very slowly, the rate to some extent depending on the gradient of the roof. As an example, during a peak rainfall event, on a roof with a 2 degree fall, and a 60mm depth of substrate up to 99% of the rainfall can be retained using a Meander 30 board. www.optigreen.co.uk

this is a patented system for water retention on green roofs using an new drainage board called Meander. The principle behind this patented system is as simple as it is effective – water flows along a winding route from one chamber to another, just like a naturally meandering river or stream. During heavy rainfall the chambers of the board are filled with water and it passes from one chamber to the next causing a long delay in the discharge of excess water. The meander board is available in 30 or 60mm height. With a standard drainage board, water is stored in individual pockets in the board until a certain level is reached with excess water then draining through small holes in the board to the water storage mat below. Childlike whimsey - grownup storage solutions

The Playhouse Company, have developed a number of playhouses with inbuilt storage, meaning that both children and adults alike are kept happy in the garden. The jewel in the crown is spread over two levels; the lower section is independently accessed and provides a good size storage area, whilst the playhouse above provides a fantastic play area with lots of activity accessories. The playhouse itself is accessed via a staircase to the left hand side of the front. It has lots of windows, giving good visibility inside by allowing lots of natural light to get in so play time can be extended into the evening. There is a veranda on two sides of the playhouse with a head height of 5ft 3in. Set on a 4ft high platform, which then raises slightly higher on the right hand side to allow better

access to the storage area below, this also allows for the monkey bars to be set at a good height. Coming off from the platform is a scramble net, a climbing wall with knotted rope and a fireman’s pole. The storage area has a ceiling height of 4ft and has two doors and four glazed windows in it. Prices start from £11,115, including VAT, delivery and installation. The Playhouse Company can accommodate any size garden, and are happy to create bespoke masterpieces, that the whole family will be able to enjoy – whether that enjoyment comes from sliding down a fireman’s pole, or neatly storing away the garden tools! www.theplayhousecompany.co.uk

pond construction

What’s your liner? The most successful and economical way to construct a pond is by installing a pond liner, whatever the size, from a water feature to a lake or reservoir or swimming pond. Christine Ryder looks at the options Pond liners are available in a host of sizes in several different grades of material, from three ply woven polyethylene for small to medium garden ponds to reinforced pvc reservoir or lake liners, all in a choice of colours. The reinforced reservoir liner is suitable for all garden ponds, water features, koi ponds, fish ponds, duck ponds, wildlife ponds, farm ponds, swimming ponds, fishing

44

ponds, lakes, and reed beds. It is a material which is very durable because of the internal reinforcement, once fitted it can be forgotten for a lifetime. It will withstand tree roots and dogs and wildlife paddling on it. It has a high level of ultra violet protection giving it a guarantee of 45 years against damage by sunlight and frost. It is installed regularly in hot countries worldwide as a result of the high ultraviolet resistance. The top landscaper’s first choice for reliability, it is in addition, easy to fit into any shape of pool. It can, on normal or sandy ground, be laid without an underlay if necessary. However if the ground is stony

pond construction

extract the green algae, however disguising and positioning them above where the waterfall starts can be problematic. That is where the pressurized filters come into their own. They can be buried anywhere in the soil with just the top showing or built into the waterfall, as they allow the water to be pushed uphill

or has flints it may be necessary to have an underlay. A non- woven geotextile of 250grams per square metre will provide the extra protection. The geotextile can also be laid on top of the liner to provide a purchase for soil and roots. A wildlife pond may not require a pump and filter, but with the right choice of water loving plants should, on maturity, become a pleasant, interesting feature to attract every form of wildlife. However all other ponds will probably require a suitable pump and filter to prevent them becoming overrun by green algae. The sound of running water from a waterfall is to be encouraged as an attractive feature but also it will improve the water quality due to aeration. It is important to install the correct size pumps and filters or the client may be disappointed with the results. As a rule of thumb the total volume of water should be pumped and filtered every hour. Continuous running of a pump and filter is critical to keeping the water clear. It may be necessary to install several pumps and filters in the larger ponds. To calculate volume of water using metres, multiply length x width x depth x 1000 which equals litres in the pond. If in doubt always over estimate the volume of water. There are many choices in pond pumps but the best and most reliable are submersible pumps which are designed to run continuously. They can, with minimal maintenance last for many years but are very economical to run. Many of the pumps have a fountain kit with a selection of heads. When combined with the correct size of ultraviolet filter (either pressurized or gravity) will eliminate green murky water. The ultraviolet filters are many and varied but the main difference is between gravity or pressurized. The gravity filters are generally more efficient as they have a larger value ultraviolet lamp and have a larger surface area to

by virtue of being under pressure. The larger versions have an automatic cleaner using the pump pressure which if used regularly will mean no manual cleaning of sponges during the year, just in spring when the ultraviolet bulb should be replaced. As an added extra at only a small cost can be the addition of a set of lights which can be placed underwater or at the poolside or behind the waterfall. A client who has a well designed and easy to operate water feature or pond will be a satisfied customer and will generate more work through recommendations. Christine Ryder is a director of Fawcetts Pond Liners.

ground control

Get set to get ready Alan Abel from Complete Weed Control considers some of the seasonal maintenance activities for the part-time groundsman. Typically, now is the time that turf managers need to keep an eye open for any disease infestations. Regular brushing is vital during the winter to remove and disperse dew droplets from the grass leaf, drying the plant and minimising the risk of fungal attack. Regular brushing will also scatter the worm casts, removing possible sites for broadleaf weed invasion and keeping a true bowling and batting surface. Brush in different directions to prevent the formation of a nap or grain in the sward and to stand the blades up ready for cutting. Limit chemical control of fungal disease to contact acting product only as systemic require an actively growing sward to work to their best ability. Spray at the curative rate as soon as fungal attack is observed and repeat as necessary. It is a good idea to alternate active ingredients to improve fungal kill and prevent the development of resistant disease strains. BannerMaxx from Syngenta can be used from March to help control Microdochium Patch, Anthracnose, Dollar Spot and Brown Patch as it works well at lower temperatures (above 6 degrees soil temperature). If necessary, treat leatherjackets up until March if crane flies have been active during the autumn period. Look out for the first signs of leatherjackets in the spring, particularly during dry periods when turf areas will die back because of

46

www.landscapermagazine.com

the root feeding activity of the larvae. Only carry out work on turf areas during dry and open weather and not during wet and frosty conditions, otherwise damage to the sward may result.

ground control

scarification during wicket preparation should, if carried out thoroughly, be more than adequate in removing any surface thatch build up during the winter period. Any major thatch reduction required will be best left until the end of the playing season because of the unacceptable degree of surface disturbance involved. Mowing of the square should now be three times per week, more if possible, depending on soil and weather conditions. Again, vary the direction of the cut very slightly to help prevent a nap or grain forming within the sward. Wicket preparation should commence 10 days before the first matches and a rolling programme of preparation carried out to a pre-determined wicket plan. Typically, league matches using the middle wickets with Sunday mid-week and Colts matches moved to the outer ones. Careful wicket planning is the only way to efficiently manage a limited amount of wickets during a busy fixture season. Fertiliser application should ideally be based on a soil test to determine the correct ratio of NPK to be applied, to help ensure that expensive fertiliser products are correctly used. Most reputable fertiliser manufacturers/suppliers will carry out soil analysis. www.completeweedcontrol.co.uk

Cricket Squares Once the groundsman is satisfied that the soil is dry enough to work on, pre-season rolling should be carried out, firstly at right angles to the direction of play, finishing in the direction of play. Commence with the lightest roller then gradually increase the weight as the month progresses. Aim to be using the heaviest roller available on the square (subject to soil conditions) from late March onwards. Frequency of rolling will depend on soil conditions and the level of consolidation achieved after each rolling session. Sarel spike aeration should always precede rolling and should be carried out after rolling to prevent the surface sealing up and restricting sward development. Most clubs usually utilise the ride-on mowers for the early pre-season rolling, then progress to the heavier Auto roller type, firstly unballasted then ballasted with water as the month progresses. The amount of thatch present in the sward can determine the pace of each pitch and the degree of lift as a delivered ball pitches into the surface during play. Scarification of the square should be carried out with great care, particularly if a powered scarifier is used. Aim to lightly scarify the sward, taking care not to mark the soil surface in any way, in the direction of play only. The general

mowers

Five in one machines The decision to cut and collect is one to consider as the preference in most situations would be to leave a clean, cutting-free environment in which to enjoy those green spaces. Rolling immediately on the mower improves root structure and improves grass quality. To fulfil that need for flexibility, a mower needs to be five in one machines, the Profihopper from Amazone Groundcare fits the bill. Based around a 0-turn, 24.5 hp diesel engined power unit in either four-wheel drive or two-wheel drive, the 1.25 m wide horizontal flail SmartCut rotor is able to be fitted with a variety of cutting blades from rough cut, fine cut, scarifying or extra-fine cut. Within 10 minutes the out-front PowerCompactor deck on the Profihopper can be converted, without any tools, from mowing the front lawn of a stately home, complete with stripes, to clearing leaves or cutting light scrub and nettles. The grass is taken away from the cutting cylinder by

augers meaning that the Profihopper cleans up in any weather and any application - be it litter, hedge cuttings, summer bedding plants, grass or leaves that you are trying to collect – it takes it all in its stride. The 710 litre hopper can pack in over 1000 litres of loose collected grass and the 2.1m tipping height enables the cut material to be taken away in big bags or in a trailer. The shredding action of the flail combinations also starts the composting action much faster to quickly make some organic matter that then can be used as fertiliser or for top dressing. And if it’s mulching that you want to do then inserting the mulch flap into the cutting head enables you to cut and drop, ideal, for instance, when wilting down wild flower meadows to ensure maximum seed drop before taking away the top organic matter for composting. www.amazone.co.uk

Cut, collect and stripe Following the successful launch of the rear roller kit for their 41cm pedestrian rotary models last year, Etesia has announced that the kit is now also be available for 46cm models in their range. Etesia pedestrian mowers have become world renowned for cutting and collecting in all weather conditions – even the wet, but before last year were not available with a rear roller kit for that all important presentation. With the launch of the rear roller kit for the 46cm cutting width models, which are Etesia’s most popular models, users will be given much more choice in their cutting requirements - cut, collect, stripe and by fitting the mulching insert, mulch – making this particular range of rotary mowers a must in anyone’s armoury. No tools are required to fit the roller kits to an Etesia machine – just simply hang the free floating roller on two locating pins behind the grass box. The roller has been designed so that it will operate free-floating at any height the machine is mowing at – ensuring perfect striping no matter the weather or height of cut required. www.etesia.co.uk

Fighting child exploitation Natural Paving Products (UK) Ltd has partnered with Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel Peace Prize winner 2014, to improve the lives of Indian children near its quarries and new factory. Kailash is a child rights activist and founder of New Delhi-based NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), which works to eradicate child exploitation. Many rural communities in India, like the ones surrounding the natural stone regions, witness widespread child labour and underage marriage due to impoverished circumstances. The United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Human Development Report puts the number of child labourers in India at approximately 10 per cent of the total labour force. Natural Paving Products supports the work of BBA and has committed to funding 10 new child friendly villages as part of its ‘Bal Mitra Gram’ programme over the next three years. These child friendly villages, set up by BBA, ensure every child up to the age of 14 gets a quality education and there is a community ban on all child labour and child marriage. As well as supporting Kailash and his work in the region, Natural Paving Products has recently opened a new state-of-the-art factory, which will provide further job opportunities to local people. In January this year, the new factory played host to the BBA’s launch of the Bal Mitra Gram programme, which was attended by over 2000 people including key members of the stone industry, dignitaries and both the local and national media. Mark Wall, Managing Director at Natural Paving Products, told The Landscaper “Our commitment to providing a quality product and service to our customers must be measurable at all stages of the supply chain and so we believe that it is our duty to ensure our Indian operations are run with the highest regard for ethical trading. While we employ local people, pay fare wages and are members of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), we wanted to do more to make a lasting positive impact in the areas we operate – Kailash’s work was the perfect opportunity to be part of a bigger initiative that is transforming the lives of rural Indian communities.”

Matching footpaths A recent housing development by Bellway Homes in Sheffield is one of the latest projects to use Bituchem’s specialist Natratex Cotswold landscaping material. Over 700m² of the product in 6mm buff was applied to the new Bluecoats housing estate’s footpaths to complement the natural stone finish of the houses, whilst standing out from the surrounding tarmac roadways. Natratex Cotswold proved the perfect solution for the application due to its ability to withstand constant pedestrian usage without damaging the appearance of the natural stone. This product, is extremely versatile with successful applications across a variety of sectors, including the housebuilding sector. The material is particularly effective for such applications as it can be used to complement or contrast with the surrounding landscape, including modern rural developments which are increasingly using natural Cotswold stone for the houses and surrounding areas. The natural aesthetics of Natratex Cotswold is created using naturally occurring coloured aggregates, bound using a clear binder for a long-lasting, durable finish. Suitable for both pedestrian and vehicular areas, Natratex Cotswold can be applied in new construction projects, such as new housing developments, as well as overlays for existing landscapes and regeneration projects. The material can be laid all year round and is done so using conventional equipment for a quick and easy application without the need for lengthy road closures. Bituchem has created a heavy duty alternative for heavily-trafficked areas and also a porous option for schemes requiring a sustainable drainage solution, which eliminates the need for noticeable conventional drains. www.bituchem.com

Labour-saving alternative Composite Fencing can provide an attractive, environmentally friendly a maintenance-free alternative to timber fencing. Manufactured from Wood-Grain, a composite comprising 75% recycled material, Eurocell Composite Fencing offers the look and feel of timber without the hassle, and the durability of concrete without the weight and health and safety concerns. Wood-Grain consists mainly of recycled PVC-U, with a premium wood composite surface, and is guaranteed for 20 years against rotting. Composite Fencing consists of panels weighing less than 5kg that are slotted into place and stacked to the required height. Replacing wooden panels in an existing fence is simplicity itself: just remove old panels and slot into the existing concrete posts. Composite Fencing Wood-Grain fence posts are also very easy to install as, like the panels, they can be sawn to measure and fixed using the system’s ‘SupaSpike’ –

whereby the spike is driven into the ground and the post fitted over the top. For surfaces such as driveways and pavements, a bolt down version is available. Independent tests have shown that the Composite Fencing components have greater tensile strength than concrete. The posts are flexible and so absorb and dissipate the energy from strong winds, whereas concrete posts will not flex and so can break in high winds and severe storms. In one case, a post supported 56 stone – three burly men standing on it lengthways – without breaking. Composite Fencing has an attractive matt wood finish on each side of the panel so will prove more aesthetically acceptable to neighbours – and who might be even persuaded to share in the cost of installation. www.eurocell.co.uk

Chelsea gathers momentum Plans for a horticultural industry garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016 are gathering momentum with nearly 60 companies signing up to contribute to what will be an industry first. The Sun Flower Square is being championed by The Sun’s Gardening Editor Peter Seabrook in association with the HTA and GCA and their members, schools and horticultural colleges and has received fantastic support from the industry so far. The floral exhibit in the Grand Pavilion which feature four model garden displays, each 4m x 4m square, the same size as the average front garden in Britain. Each garden will have its own theme: Love the Plot You’ve Got – Room Outside Based on the successful Love the Plot You’ve Got gardening campaign and designed by Lovania, industry members of the Horticultural Trades Association will demonstrate how a hard landscaped front garden can be greened and decorated with woody plants and hardy perennials to form an inspiring outdoor space. The gardens will include trees, shrubs, conifers, herbaceous plants, roses and alpines. The choice of plants will give a year round effect and a colourful display of flowers and foliage in May. GCA Golden Jubilee Hanging Basket Garden Members of the Garden Centre Association, who are celebrating their Golden Jubilee this year, will present a hanging garden with a massed display of hanging baskets (ideally 14 inch diameter) hanging from pergolas above ground filling patio pots holding some of the baskets. The effect will be to fill the cube of space with colour, achieved by featuring popular summer bedding flowers and foliage available to home owners in May. Garden centres that are contributing include Squire’s, Coolings, Perrywood, Cowell’s, Van Hage, Gordale, Old Railway Line, Sunshine, Ruxley Manor, Millbrook, Brookhouse (Barton Grange), Alton, Thurrock, Wembley and Meadow Croft. Pots are kindly being provided by Apta. The Seed Garden Major seed brands come together to present a living catalogue of the flowers, fruits and vegetables they offer as both seeds and young plants. All the plant material will be container grown and mature so it can be uplifted after the show for display in a public garden. Brands that have signed up to display include Suttons, Dobies, Marshalls, Unwins, Robinsons, Mr Fothergill’s, E. W, King, DT Brown, Woolmans, Thompson & Morgan, Van Meuwen and Johnsons.

The Rising Stars Grow your Own Exhibit Supported by Westland Horticulture and their Rising Stars scheme, home grown is the theme of this garden. Assisted by schools and colleges, this garden will demonstrate the wide range of crops which can be produced where there is no available soil. Plants will be grown on the backing wall in hanging baskets, satchels and patio pots. Kernock Plants will also be supplying an InstaPlant Living Wall to commemorate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. Writtle College is growing their new Osteospermum ‘Little Writtle’ and plan to stage plants in a school desk. Thompson & Morgan are delivering plantlets of Gerbera Sweet Series (from Florist) and Tree lily bulbs for schools to grow. Pinetops Nurseries are working with school children to grow their new face up, bicolored Asiatic lily and Hills Nurseries are doing the same with Chrysanthemum Princess Charlotte. Speaking about the initiative, Peter Seabrook told the The Landscaper, “We are delighted by the industry support we have received so far. All of the plants will be grown in pots, hanging baskets and raised beds to demonstrate how easy it is to transform an outdoor space. “We will have wide range of ornamental trees, conifers, shrubs, herbaceous, bedding and alpine plants, and of course pots, paving, hanging baskets, furniture – everything you would expect to find in a front garden. We will even have some novelties on display - it is an exhibit that you will not want to miss.” It is not too late to contribute to The Sun Flower Square gardens. If you would like to register your interest, please contact Cassie King at the HTA, who is coordinating the project on behalf of Peter Seabrook at cassie.king@hta.org.uk

The wonder of wildflowers Warwickshire based Hawkesmill Nurseries, whose themed promotions are all about instant impact and planting ideas, is offering retailers the Wildflower Range, this selection is available now in 9cm square pots and packed by 12 pots to a tray. The perennial wildflowers are looking superb and are a great way to start adding range to your gardening season, they also offer the customer a reason to get out in the garden and encourage wildlife to their gardens. It’s estimated that some counties have lost up to 90% of their wildflowers since the beginning of the 20th century, around a third of Britain’s 1,346 species are now believed to be in danger. By growing native wildflowers in gardens, or indeed any available space a real contribution can be gained to reversing this loss of habitat. This will in turn attract garden wildlife, including many species that prey on unwelcome garden pests. This new, fresh, resurgence has prompted Hawkesmill Nurseries to work on a selection of 40 of the most popular

varieties which will bring colour and versatility to the garden. The range for 2016 includes such favourites as Foxglove, Cowslip, Oxlip, Teasel and Bluebell. Grown in 9cm square pots and packed in 12 plants per tray, this selection has colourful and educational plants labels complete with QR codes which link through to our dedicated wildflower website which is packed with more information and advice, why not take a look www.wild-flowers.org.uk The Wildflowers Season Starter Collection has an SRP of £1.99 or buy 6 for £10. They are all grown in peat free media. Richard Evans Sales Director told The Landscaper , “All collections are supplied with our co–ordinated presentation, featuring our lock in variety labels on each plant and full colour POS for each collection, as well as individual barcoding, giving the retailer the perfect early season display to brighten up their plant area and encourage early season sales. We offer an attractive range of varieties explains Richard. We are seeing a great resurgence in the popularity of Wildflowers, with gardeners being encouraged to create their own natural areas to entice wildlife in to their garden plots.” www.hawkesmillnurseries.co.uk

Safe to import? As the latest threat to Britain’s plants - the pathogen Xylella fastidiosa - increase, the managing director of the UK’s largest container tree nursery has warned a strict quarantine system is the only answer to combat the serious peril. “Anyone buying trees should ask where they have come from and if they have an audit trail”, Mike Glover of Barcham Trees in Cambridgeshire told The Landscaper “If they are not satisfied with the answers, they should simply walk away and not buy from that supplier”. “Xylella is not in the UK yet, but if plant material keeps coming across from the continent without any thought to bio-security it is only a matter of time before this menace becomes a reality. Wholesale nurseries are an obvious sector to focus on plant quarantine, but more plants are imported by garden centres, supermarkets, landscape architects and designers, as well as the general public buying online. Buying must become more considered to protect our industry and the wider landscape. “There is a solution, and it has already been put into practice by Barcham. In 2014 we published a six-page

document outlining our commitment to bio-security, the first UK tree nursery to do so. Central to our commitment is the pledge we will continue not to import trees and sell them to customers for immediate planting into the UK landscape. All imported trees are held on the nursery for a full growing season, during which time they are subject to regular rigorous inspection for pest and disease, including those conducted by DEFRA. “Bio-security is a real and ever-present issue we must face. The authorities are not taking a lead on this; it requires companies and individuals to take responsibility for their actions to keep our industry intact. Our policy was taken voluntarily and at significant financial cost to the nursery, but we know it is the right thing to do”. While the majority of trees at Barcham are home-grown, every consignment of imported trees is given a unique batch number on arrival, clearly visible on every tree the nursery sells, thereby providing a complete audit trail from supplying nursery to planting in the UK landscape. Once they have been through a full growing season on the nursery and been passed clear of pest and disease by DEFRA, the problem associated with imported stock is nullified.

horticulture The Xylella bacterium, which lives in the plant xylem tissue, has been present in Europe since October 2013, when it was reported in olive groves in Apulia, Italy. In July 2015 it was reported on Corsica and then in mainland France. The European Food Safety Authority currently lists more than 350 plant species, from 204 genera and 75 botanical families, affected by Xylella fastidiosa. The European Commission’s website calls it “one of the most dangerous plant bacteria worldwide, causing a variety of diseases with huge economic impact”.
