The Bauma show attracted around 580,000 visitors from 200 countries to Munich between April 11 and 17. That’s a rise of more than nine percent. After Germany, the top ten countries of origin among the visitors were Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, UK, Sweden, the Russian Federation, Poland and the Czech Republic. A total of 3,423 exhibitors—1,263 from Germany and 2,160 from abroad—from 58 countries presented their products, developments and innovations on a record 605,000 square meters of exhibition space. Exhibitors from outside Germany accounted for 63 percent of the total— higher than ever before. It was not a German show it was a great European event. There was much talk about the UK referendum and our

membership of the EU. I detected a mood of apprehension about us taking off into the dark and resigning from the biggest trading block in the world. The Landscaper is really only concerned about the effects the decision will make on our industry and our environment. We have spoken to some key industry figures (p34) and discovered views on both sides. We are also conducting our own survey www.landscapermagazine.com it’s a one question affair and it will be interesting to discover the majority view. The grass needs cutting (p39) the weeds are growing (p47) and beautiful gardens deserved to be illuminated (p58). There ‘s plenty to get on with - if on the other hand you have a few moments to spare have a go at our Spot the Difference competition (p37)

- you could win a superb electric bike worth £1000! Have a good month.

Exceptional growth Wessex International report an exceptional growth in popularity of the ProLine RMX professional roller mowers. At introduction the Wessex ProLine roller mower certainly heralded a new dimension in sports and amenity turf maintenance and a cost-effective way of professional turf mowing. Wessex have introduced new models this year with more to come for 2016. The present collection includes attachable rigid deck, Tri-Deck and folding wing versions. At the top of the range is the 8 metre Tri-Deck, offering wide area mowing with exceptional speed and cost-efficiency. Each deck

on the triple mower has full width rollers at the front and rear that restrict airflow. The high speed blades create suction beneath the deck chamber and the uncut grass is sucked up by

the blades, leaving a superb quality cut at high speeds. The system works effectively across the whole range. www.wessexintl.com

New Electric Zero-Emission E10 Excavator At Bauma 2016, Bobcat presented a fully functional prototype of the company’s new E10 Electric model, a new zero-emission, electric powertrain version of the very successful E10 1 tonne micro-excavator, one of the most popular models in the Bobcat compact excavator range. Developed at the new Bobcat Innovation Centre in Dobris in the Czech Republic, in conjunction with electric vehicle specialists, the E10 Electric micro-excavator is a new version of the E10 model with the factory installed option of an alternative all-electric powertrain allowing the machine to be used in areas requiring zero emissions such as interiors and basement construction work. Along with zero emissions, the E10 Electric model also offers very low noise levels on site with an LpA of only 64 dBA. The alternative powertrain option in the E10 Electric model comprises of an electric motor that can be powered both by a pack of rechargeable Li-Ion batteries or a 400 V mains electric supply via a plug-in power cable. The batteries can be quickly recharged (less than an hour to reach full capacity) and when fully recharged, the excavator can work independently of the mains power for 2-3 hours. The new E10 Electric model also offers the capability of carrying out work while charging via the mains power cable. The new E10 Electric version has the same zero tailswing (ZTS) profile and identical external dimensions as the standard E10 machine and offers the same or better performance. As the new machine is designed to be used in

World of nematodes As we increasingly seek natural, safer and more effective pest control solutions, more and more of them are discovering the world of nematodes. BASF, producers of Nemasys and Nemaslug products, have made nematodes more readily available and easy-to-use, with them being packaged specifically for the domestic gardener. By simply watering nematodes into the soil or onto foliage, gardeners can protect their plants and vegetables, without the need of a horticultural degree! Nematodes are naturally occurring microscopic animal organisms that are present in garden soil where they naturally hunt down their target prey. Certain nematode species control slugs and other garden pests naturally with no side effects or harm to children, pets or non-target species such as birds or hedgehogs. The major sales in the UK are for Nemaslug, with it being one of the UK’s leading slug control products, but BASF also produces Nemasys natural control products for chafer grubs, leather jackets, fruit and vegetable protection, ants and vine weevils. Each one is based on a specific nematode species that naturally attack the harmful pests. “British gardeners are increasingly using beneficial

nematodes as one the most effective ways control slugs and other pests. Nemaslug and Nemasys products are natural, highly effective and environmentally friendly with no adverse effects to children, pets and wildlife,” says Mike Finney, BASF’s Key Country Sales Manager Biologicals Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “They occur naturally in our gardens and by harnessing and replicating nature we produce five different species to control a range of different target pests.” Nematodes penetrate their targets by entering through natural body openings. Once inside they release bacteria that attacks the respiratory and digestive systems, stopping them from eating and quickly killing them. It does not stop there. They reproduce inside the dead pest and release new generations of hungry nematodes that disperse in the soil to hunt down further pests. When they can no longer find host pests they die back to their original numbers. Nematodes also act as a natural deterrent to slugs and other pests that quickly detect their presence and move away from their predators to safer, untreated areas. www.nemasysinfo.com

The Keepmoat Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium home to Doncaster Rovers FC, Doncaster Rugby League FC and Doncaster Rovers Belles Ladies Football Team. With games coming thick and fast, Head Groundsman Jim Davison is mindful that grass cover needs to be kept as close to 100% as possible – but was finding that by October each year it was starting to struggle. Jim turned to John Hughes, of DLF’s Johnsons Sports Seed, for advice. The main pitch at the stadium is a desso system, meaning it’s harder wearing and allows teams to perform 3-4 times a week. Outside there are 2 pitches used by academies; a full size, newly-refurbished 3G pitch; 4 full size pitches and a training area at their nearby training ground Cantley Park. “The maintenance is ‘full-on’ for my team of 4 guys with John Hughes acting like an extra pair of arms - always at the end of the phone if we need him! With the budget we’ve got, we have to work hard to create a pitch that keeps the players, fans and the media happy. By not having soil heating or lights

we’re very much dependant on the weather being kind to get the results we want, but starting off with the right product is the first step. Therefore, when we asked John about improving our grass cover over winter he came up with the plan of using tetraploids,” explained Jim, “and they’ve worked a treat!” The Stadium is a regular user of Johnsons J Premier Pitch for his renovation work and didn’t want to move away from what they knew worked. In view of this John Hughes recommended they use Double and Fabian for overseeding later in the season as it is known for its very good wear tolerance and rapid germination at lower temperatures. Jim again, “It delivered the dense sward ‘quick fix’ we were after and, ever since October, we’ve been using it little and often on the main wear areas of the stadium pitch to re-introduce tetraploids slowly but surely – we’ve had success every time. It’s an extra tool in our box moving forward, I know we can use it whenever we need to regain grass cover.”

Speedcut contractors have helped play continue at The Club Company golf courses after installing drainage at three of the sites. Chartham Park, Benton Hall and Castle Royle golf clubs all underwent drainage improvements on problem areas, helping to reduce the threat of course closure across the courses. Chris Brook is Courses Manager for The Club Company, overseeing work across 11 locations whilst maintaining his own course at Castle Royle. After a successful drainage project taking place at Tytherington golf Club, further work was carried out that saw two primary drainage systems (Benton Hall & Castle Royle) and one secondary system installed at (Chartham Park). “The weather last year and this year has highlighted the importance of a good drainage system,” said Chris. “Now we seem to have deluges of rain whereas ten years ago it would rain lightly for a couple of days, so we need to be prepared for that, and that’s why we are working with Speedcut.” “We’ve already worked with them at Tytherington Golf Club and have seen a massive difference, so we knew they could help us with the other three sites. “These systems are purely to keep the courses open and running, because at the end of the day certain holes close the course. Keeping them clear means that we stay open which has a very positive impact.”

Purchasing a backhoe If you’re one of the many landscapers who own a compact tractor then the third option of purchasing a backhoe, a hydraulically operated machine that fits onto the back of your tractor, could be the ideal solution. Siromer have a choice of backhoes offering you a dig depth range from 0.95m - 2.25m, enabling you to choose the right one for the job. But there’s more to a backhoe than meets the eye… To be a truly efficient piece of machinery a backhoe should be able to operate with interchangeable buckets, allowing for different jobs around a smallholding, therefore helping you to get the most out of your equipment. For digging footings the most important type of bucket is a trenching bucket - this narrow bucket has a narrow edge and teeth which allows it to dig through the surface and penetrate the soil beneath, enabling the operator to dig efficiently to the width and depth required. Siromer’s backhoes connect to the tractor using a three-point linkage, which will save you time in attaching and detaching as there is no complicated bracketry to use. In addition to the linkage each backhoe has it’s own

independant hydraulics - by having it’s own PTO the performance of the equipment is greatly improved as it is not feeding off the tractor’s own hydraulics. Prices vary depending upon the size: * B93 - with a dig depth of 0.95m - £2600+VAT * B94 - with a dig depth of 1.95m - £2700+VAT * B95 - with a dig depth of 2.25m - £3400+VAT TEL 01253 799 029 www.siromer.co.uk

Products and services Over 70 landscapers, contractors and suppliers attended the Association of Professional Landscaper (APL) Spring Seminar and BBQ which took place at Tendercare, Uxbridge on 14 April and made the most of the opportunity to talk to suppliers about products and services across the landscaping industry. The event started with Tendercare Managing Director Andrew Halksworth looking at the challenges presented by the handling of large stock and the solutions available to assist. He emphasised the importance of planting big trees at soil level. Joe Bray from Makita provided a useful overview of the work that the company are doing to develop green machinery using Lithium ion batteries enabling no emissions, reduced noise and lower vibration. Louise Tomlin from Jacksons Fencing spoke about how they have developed their gravel board product to aid the dwindling hedgehog population. A hole the size of a CD in the board enables hedgehogs to continue to move between gardens. Andy Forey from Clearstone Paving spoke about the resin bound products that they provide. A relatively new technology that has only come to fruition in the UK since the introduction of the Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) eight years ago resin bound products provide a seamless solution for permeable surfaces. The event culminated with the Great British Stone Off – a panel session bringing together leading suppliers from some of the most well-known paving suppliers in the UK. Chaired by APL Chair Mark Gregory. This was a lively debate which attracted

many questions from the floor. There was some great discussion on issues such as ethical trading, sourcing the greenest products and having full visibility of your full supply chain.

Neutral position Following a full consultation with all members in March the HTA has declared a neutral position on the EU Referendum. The HTA consultation attracted responses from 169 members – a response rate of 12%. Members declared interest for all outcomes (leaving, staying and remaining neutral) with no overall majority and based on that HTA will remain neutral. HTA Chief Executive Carol Paris comments, “From the good response rate to our survey and comments sent members are interested in the EU referendum and its impact. With views across the spectrum adopting a neutral position ensures that the HTA doesn’t alienate the views of members. Working with other organisations we will endeavour to provide a balanced picture of the pros and cons in the lead up to the vote on 23 June.”

Chosen by facilities management company Acacia and supplied by irrigation specialists Aquaturf Solutions, the 3HP surface spray aerator was favoured for its dual ability to circulate the water, which was at risk of becoming stagnant when the previous 12-year old fountain broke, and provide a striking feature for the canteen diners overlooking the lake on the business park to enjoy. Gavin Osborne, facilities engineer at Acacia who had the job of researching and finding the perfect fountain, says: “We’d been looking into the right fountain for three to four months before we were recommended the Gemini by a colleague who’d recently installed one at a local golf club. With the reference and photos he provided it was looking good that we’d found the one to fit the bill.” According to Gavin the Gemini ticked all the boxes: “It was important we found something with a practical purpose to maintain a clean and clear lake and provide an attractive focal point in the commercial landscape of the business park.” As functional as it is beautiful, the power of the Gemini, which was installed by Aquaturf Solutions, allows it to move over three times more water than decorative pattern fountains, yet its simple beauty provides an appealing aesthetic. “The level of power and spray were exactly what we were looking for,” says Gavin. “The water is kept aerated and healthy and the 1.5m vertical spray pattern is really striking.” otterbine.uk@lely.com

Growing artwork An art installation featuring a pelt of living, Britishbred grasses has been used as part of The Tree Ceremony at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris to highlight the danger of increasing city temperatures, damaging flood waters, polluted air and bio-diversity loss. The living curtain of seedling grass was used to frame a tree during the opening week of December’s COP21 climate

convention in Paris, where the aim was to raise awareness of the urban heat island effect and to change preconceptions about how we regard plants and trees beyond their more immediate amenity and ecosystem services. The grass was grown using Germinal’s A26 So-Green seed mixture and sculpted by Dorking-based artists Ackroyd and Harvey. “The installation made a huge impact and was a great success, with many people commenting that they couldn’t believe grass could be grown like a huge living pelt,” describes the artwork’s creator, Heather Ackroyd. “Part of

loneliness amongst our older people. The Victoria Business Improvement District (BID) has teamed up with the Sir Simon Milton Foundation to create a garden that showcases the role that high quality public spaces play in bringing communities and generations together. There is a wealth of research pointing towards the effect isolation can have on both the mental and physical health of the over-65’s and, with the population of people aged over 80 expected to treble in the next 20 years, the issue has never been of more importance.

garden. It’s a design with great storytelling at its heart, creatively articulating the challenges and solutions to isolation, as well as showcasing the power of well-designed public spaces to encourage people to get together. Undulating traditional lawn turf will meet the latest in astroturf technology, celebrating the different phases of our lives. Tall trees with brightly decorated trunks will act as beacons, drawing people in to the oak seating in the centre of the garden, which embodies the kind of connection the garden is all about. A particularly innovative element of the garden relates

that success was due to the ability of the grass to maintain its vibrant green colour, even during the short winter days of December.”

Award-winning garden design duo Lee Bestall and Paul Robinson, are the brains behind this ‘Fresh Garden’ entry, entitled ‘Urban Connections’. Their innovative design creates new green spaces in an urban environment where people can meet and socialise. Then, once the curtain has fallen on Chelsea for another year, the garden will be relocated to the streets of Victoria, subject to planning permission, creating two new small public gardens - ‘Parklets’ - for residents, workers and visitors alike to enjoy. ‘Urban Connections’ is both a conceptual and practical

to its use of ‘companion planting’. Plants have been selected because they are known to grow better together, emphasising the garden’s message that people thrive when in the proximity of others. Lee Bestall, garden designer told The Landscaper “It’s a genuine privilege to be showcasing a garden with such an important message for society. ‘Urban Connections’ demonstrates the positive effect that green spaces can have on both mental and social wellbeing. The garden provides a fantastic platform to share stories, strengthen relationships and raise public awareness in our quest to combat isolation.”

Grow better together The growing issue of elderly isolation is set to be brought to the fore at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, through a ‘Fresh’ garden seeking to address

Roof garden business soars

Extending working lives

By working in partnership with its green roof division, one of the UK’s leading horticultural suppliers to the landscaping market has seen a huge growth in its roof garden business over the last 12 months - and predicts further grow. Boningale Nurseries said that by combining its horticulture experience and the cutting edge research from its award-winning green roof department GreenSky, landscape architects working on designs that require a roof garden, have been able to benefit from the whole package. From specialist advice on how to plant a roof garden to supplying all the planting stock required – both for the roof garden and the surrounding landscape. “This has proven to be extremely popular because many of our clients appreciate the ease of working with a single supplier that has the in-depth knowledge required to provide high-quality advice and planting options,”

British Safety Council supports the new EU-OSHA Healthy Workplaces for All Ages campaign. The European workforce is ageing fast. By 2030, employees aged over 55 are expected to make up 30% or more of the total workforce in many EU countries. In the UK, 30% or more of the total workforce is already over 50 years’ old, while 60 year and older employees constitute 23% of the workforce, and this figure is set to rise to 30.7% by 2020. This demographic trend creates significant challenges and opportunities for both employers and their workforces. That’s why the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has launched the Healthy Workplaces for All Ages campaign. It is set to alert European employers to the urgency of the situation and the need to respond to it in a positive way. Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, said: “The official retirement age in EU Member States is increasing. In the next two decades, a large proportion of employees over 50 will leave work for ever,

said Frank Sandford, Boningale’s Sales and Marketing Director. “Thanks to combining our expertise, roof gardens have become one of our main growth areas and we expect this trend to continue.” He said that the decision for Boningale Nurseries and Boningale GreenSky to work more closely together came after an increasing demand from landscape architects for advice on creating roof gardens as part of their overall landscaping plans for both new building projects and for existing developments. Boningale GreenSky is the green roof division of Boningale Nurseries, and has worked with the academic and scientific experts at University of Sheffield to develop a range of SkyPlugs and SkySuperstrates that help designers create long-lasting and high performance green roofs. www.boningale.co.uk

taking their market expertise, professional experience and skills with them. Meanwhile the demographic data suggests that there is unlikely to be a sufficient supply of younger people in Britain who would replace retiring workers. These facts cannot be ignored by any employer. “Retaining older workers will become not only an economic but also a social imperative. The companies that would be prepared to retain older employees will remain more competitive and diverse, with a greater pool of skills and talent. However, longer working lives would mean greater exposure to a variety of health-related risks. The management of issues such as disability prevention, rehabilitation and return to work will increase in importance. Older workers are also more vulnerable to certain hazards, particularly in an industrial work environment. Therefore, the introduction of specific measures to ensure work safety and the efficiency of older employees, as well as age-sensitive risk assessments, would have to become a key part of occupational health and safety policies.” www.britsafe.org

Mobility, high efficiency - great fit A&Y Equipment Ltd are the UK and Ireland distributor for Yanmar construction machinery along with Ammann compaction and Cormidi tracked carriers. In terms of excavators they offer the full Yanmar range from 0.6-10 tonne, including the ViO zero tail swing excavators, widely regarded as the most stable zero tail swing diggers on the market. As part of the compact reduced tail SV range is the popular SV08. The Yanmar SV08 is a powerful micro excavator, weighing just over 1 tonne, which is ideal for use in landscaping, indoor renovation, grave digging, housing foundations and pipe laying. A key factor that makes this machine so well suited to these fields is mobility; expandable track width (680mm 840 mm) allows the SV08 to travel through tight spaces, such as doors but also aids stability when digging. Its ultra-small

rear turning radius (just 305mm overhang) provides higher efficiency in narrow passages and spots. Performance of this excavator isn’t lessened due to size. The powerful, 10.2 hp, interim Tier 4 engine is environmentally friendly with clean exhaust and very low noise. As well as this the boom is fitted with a dual action auxiliary circuit (PTO), enabling users to add various accessories. All of which is protected by strong external covers and shields, in fact the flexible hoses have been carefully centrally routed to eliminate twisting problems. Yanmar are releasing three new excavators in 2016, one of which will be a 1.2 tonne zero tail swing mini, with new joystick controls. Which again looks like a great fit for many fields of work. You will literally see the earth move in the new Terrain Aeration video which demonstrates how one metre depth aeration relieves compaction, waterlogging and panning. The benefits for sports pitches, bowling greens, golf courses, around trees, parks and gardens are exceptional, simultaneously aerating for good drainage and allowing air to get to grass roots to promote and maintain a healthy sward. The company’s Terralift fleet is working throughout the UK providing long-term solutions while allowing immediate play on treated surfaces. So how does it work? The Terralift machine uses a JCB road breaker gun to hydraulically hammer the probe 1½” diameter into the soil before it releases a blast of compressed air to fracture and fissure the soil. It’s at this point you literally see the earth move, undulating with the blast and then settling as if nothing had occurred. But beneath the surface the effect is one of de-

compacting the soil, opening up the panning and allowing air to reach the roots of the grass or trees. On the tail end of the air blast, dried milled seaweed is incorporated which sticks to the walls of the fractures and over a period of time, swells and contracts with the moisture content in the soil. This process helps to keep the fractures open. The probe is removed, the machine moves forward and the process repeated using two metre centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern. The probe holes are then backfilled with aggregate to provide a semi long-term aeration/ventilation shaft allowing air and water to percolate into the fissures. The treatment can be applied across large areas of sports turf, bowling and golf greens usually in a day or so without the need to suspend play other than on the day the work is being done. The result is long term relief from compaction and associated waterlogging, giving the grass or trees the aeration they need at the roots to promote healthy growth. Ecological success story

Eco-friendly fuel

After a 33-year absence, a widescale environmental and landscape enhancement project involving nine golf courses along the Ayrshire coast has successfully reintroduced a small but significant population of Small Blue butterflies to the south west of Scotland. The Small Blue (Cupido minimus) is the UK’s smallest resident butterfly. With a wingspan often not exceeding 16mm, its small size makes it vulnerable to local climatic and habitat changes. Although it is classed as not threatened, the Small Blue’s status throughout the UK is declining, with the main colonies being located in the south of England and northwest of Scotland where its only food plant, Kidney Vetch, grows within calcareous grasslands and coastal sand dune systems. Following a building boom in the 1970s and 1980s, the loss of key wildflower habitats in Ayrshire meant that the Small Blue was last seen in the county in 1982. The Scottish Wildlife Trust sought the help of the Ayrshire Sustainability Group, which is made up of nine golf courses plus a number of local businesses and wildlife organisations, to release a colony of the butterflies at their Gailes Marsh Reserve next to Dundonald Links. Key to the project’s success was the establishment of Kidney Vetch wildflowers at each of the project’s locations, with the hope being that the establishment of a semicontinuous corridor of these and other native wild flower species would enable the butterflies to re-colonise across its former range. “Unfortunately, Kidney Vetch is a short-lived and vulnerable wild flower which responds poorly to competitor, environmental and habitat pressures,” explains Alistair Eccles, Technical Sales Representative for Germinal in Scotland. “The success of the project therefore depended on using a source of high quality Kidney Vetch seed which could establish vigorously and continue to thrive throughout the newly established wildlife corridor. We were therefore happy to contribute to the project’s success by donating the required Kidney Vetch seed which was specially harvested for us in the UK.” Following the original colony’s release two years ago, the Small Blue remained elusive, with no subsequent sightings reported in the following 12 months. “It was feared that the release colony had simply died out,“ says the Small Blue project’s manager, Gill Smart of the Scottish Wildlife Trust. “However, several sightings of the iconic butterfly last summer, including at Dundonald Links, have shown that the original colony not only survived, but also went on to produce two generations of offspring which have

Pizazz is an eco-friendly fuel made in the UK from 100% renewable Sweet Chestnut wood. As a clean alternative to firewood, Pizazz briquettes have a 0.5 per cent ash residue which means less mess after burning and a low moisture content allowing them to produce a significantly higher level of heat without splintering or breaking during use. Unlike similar products in the market, Pizazz briquettes are made in the UK from sawdust and chip from British forests. No additives are used in the process, Pizazz are formed naturally by using the lignin in the wood which when heated binds and seals the briquettes. The briquettes are clean and easy to handle with no splinters and don’t expand or crumble while burning making them one of the safest options on the market. Eve Johnson, sales and marketing director at BSW Energy, manufacturers of Pizazz, told The Landscaper : “Wood burning pizza ovens have experienced a huge upsurge in popularity over the past few years. Whether it’s for use in a restaurant or at an event, Pizazz offers a top of the range fuel source that’s clean, long-lasting and safe

successfully dispersed along the Kidney Vetch corridor from the original release site.” The project has expanded to promote wildflower corridors in general, beyond where Small Blue could reach, and is now named the Irvine to Girvan Nectar Network (IGNN). This has been funded for the last two years by The R&A which has extended its support by committing to the project for a further three years (to March 2018) explains Jo Kingsbury of RSPB, who manages Nectar Network Projects for the Ayrshire Sustainability Group. “There are still a few gaps in the Kidney Vetch corridor, but the funding extension will enable us to build on the success to date by creating more habitats which bolster the corridor and ensure the ongoing survival of the Small Blue and other essential pollinating insects. “The project illustrates that golf courses can be excellent havens for wildlife and important links in green corridors that facilitate wildlife movement. As such, they all offer the potential for environmental enhancement and improved habitat connectivity. The Ayrshire Sustainability Group has created a legacy for subsequent generations of greenkeepers to build on and clearly demonstrates how working together can successfully re-create ecologically valuable environments.”

Common concerns surround uncommon question To stay, or go? The EU referendum in June poses a seemingly simple choice: to vote to stay in Europe, or leave… but is it really that simple? In making a decision that will affect our industry and future generations for many years, there are shared common concerns. (Note: Comments here are individual personal views, and do not necessarily represent a formal corporate position.)

What do/don’t we know? The lack of balanced, objective information is a major concern. As Mark Gregory, Landform’s managing director, comments: ’The problem is, like most people, I’ve got a million things going on and not enough time to think about all these questions. Will the UK be a lone voice if we don’t like what’s on the table?’ And Tim Edwards, Boningale Nurseries, isn’t even sure a referendum is the answer. ‘I think it’s massively important, and in a more sensible world, strong politicians would be telling us what they want to do, rather than asking us what we want to do (when most of us have no understanding of the issue – and I include myself in that group),’ he says. ‘We don’t know what ‘Out’ would look like; ‘Out’ would be designed by the politicians of the day.’

Trade relationships with Europe, including the free flow of labour, runs a close second as a major concern. Plant legislation and health is of concern to nurseries in

particular, as more than half of the UK’s nursery stock comes from Europe, which raises the question of what happens in the case of a ‘Brexit’ (Britain exit) decision. ’Importing used to be difficult,’ says Ron van den Broek, Transplant Nursery. ‘So being in the EU has been helpful. However, we now have problems with needing EU approval on, for example, weed killers. That’s not helpful, because those decisions are better decided by the countries concerned.’ Tim Edwards agrees that, while good plant health regulations are needed across Europe, he is ‘critical of the plant health regime in some parts of the EU.’ He adds, ‘But I don’t imagine life would be improved were we to come out of the EU: we would still need to buy plants from across the water and, if anything, we would have less influence on the controls applied there. I’m not sure we would see any lesser regulation were we outside the EU.’ Mark Gregory hopes free trade will be maintained, whatever the referendum result. He adds, ‘I can’t think, for one minute, that our trading relationship with those nurseries will change, or that such trading agreements would dry up. Europeans value British sales; we’re such an international hub.’ Based in Kent means it’s sometimes easier and quicker

Mark Gregory, Landform Consultants to purchase plants from EU growers than from UK growers, comments Nick Coslett. ’The single market makes that process easier,’ he says. ‘However, some plant diseases have come into the UK, possibly on imported plants, on packaging, or vehicle and people movement, and the plant passport system is a lot less rigorous than the phytosanitary certificate.’ Richard Gill, Sales Development Manager at Greentech, and Chairman of BALI North East and Yorkshire region, comments on the breadth of knowledge available

Innovation and young people Specific to the golf industry, Jim Croxton believes much of the innovation that drives the industry stems from UK practitioners, equipment manufacturers, turf and seed developers and training providers. He adds: ‘Although there are many benefits to being a part of the European community, I believe the industry will continue strongly, no matter which way UK residents choose to vote.’ He doesn’t believe golf would be greatly affected if we were to leave the European Union, adding: ‘The UK industry dominates the European golf landscape and takes the majority of inbound tourism, yet spend from European

Tim Edwards, Boningale Nurseries tourism is still a very small percentage of the total.’ Debating the issue with his students, Stephen Dowbiggin, principal and chief executive Capel Manor, found ‘there was a definite confidence (not 100% of course), in Britain as being able to go it alone; I thought they’d be in favour of keeping us in Europe, but not those young people. There seems to a bit of a concern about what happens to their careers if people keep on coming into the UK, and willing to undercut them on pay, but there is also an honest belief that we can do it better.’ Through discussion with young people, Geoff Webb is also encouraged to think there is ‘a good crop of youngsters in our industry that care about their futures.’ He adds: ‘Whatever way the vote goes, we must continue to promote the industry and attract good young people into it. A challenge for us all, I believe.’ ‘We can learn a lot from Europe,’ comments Richard Gill. ‘For example, Holland, Sweden and Germany are advanced in areas such as urban tree planting and green roofs, with a wealth of research data.’

We don’t know what we don’t know ’In very broad terms, I think being in the EU has increased competition – and probably regulations – while also creating opportunities,’ says Stephen Dowbiggin. ‘If we come out of the EU, I don’t think it will affect the industry’s excellence, because we’re very good at what we do.’ And on a positive note, Ron van den Broek comments: ‘Hopefully, we’d be able to work together, and not go backwards in our relationship with Europe.’ And, seeming to echo the industry’s shared concerns, he adds: ‘We possibly won’t get information unless or until we were to leave; some of the ramifications we won’t know until we do leave.”

from sharing information and experiences with similar companies in the EU. ‘We are also involved in chemical purchasing, and need to work together on chemical legislation,’ he adds. ‘If we came out of the EU, we could lose that benefit.’ Referring to the ‘time-consuming, expensive and, sometimes, very frustrating’ process of EU approvals, Geoff Webb questions the gains of being a EU member: ‘I also wonder if suppliers of products such as fertilisers would want to spend time developing UK-specific products when the UK’S chemical directorate would still have to be guided by EU approvals?’ On a human scale, Mark Gregory wonders how a Brexit vote would affect people already on work permits in this country: ‘I suppose that could be an argument for staying in Europe, so we don’t alter the status quo, although I don’t really think that’s a good enough reason.’ Stephen Dowbiggin sees both advantages and disadvantages of being in the EU: ‘Certainly, for employability for my students, it’s been great, because their qualifications have currency throughout Europe.

mowing. Not to be confused with a rotary topper or finishing mower, the ProLine RMX mowers have full width rollers front and rear with precision blades and an exceptionally high blade tip speed. This produces a premium cut quality right through to the end of the season and the last cuts going into winter. Traditionally, cylinder mowers were the only way to achieve a premium cut with the associated costs each year of cylinder regrinds, bottom blade replacements, constant bed knife adjustments and hydraulic oil filters. The ProLine roller mowers dispense with these and come the end of the year require the minimum maintenance in preparation for next year’s mowing. Wessex have introduced new models this year with more to come for 2016. The present collection includes attachable rigid deck, Tri-Deck and folding wing versions. At the top of the range is the 8 metre Tri-Deck, offering wide area mowing with exceptional speed and cost-efficiency. Each deck on the triple mower has full width rollers at the front and rear that restrict airflow. The high speed blades create suction beneath the deck chamber and the uncut grass is sucked up by the blades, leaving a superb quality cut at high speeds. The system works effectively across the whole range. Looking towards the next mowing season there’s already a wide choice of size and model available with the Wessex range comprising Rigid Deck 1.8m, 2.4m and 3.0m, folding 3.6m and Tri-deck 5.0m, 5.6m, 6.8m and 8.0m folding wing Roller Mowers. Tough, reliable and efficient, these models are proving themselves in efficiency with local authorities, contractors, schools, councils and sports clubs. Robust and versatile The new RZT-S50 from Cub Cadet is robust and versatile, whilst perfectly balancing comfort and power with industry leading 360° turning technology for manoeuvrability. This high-specification piece of machinery is equipped with a 726 cm3 Kawasaki OHV v-twin engine delivering a power output of 12kW at 2,400rpm, and has an array of features and benefits. A key feature is the zero-turn capability, from the innovator of zero-turn. This provides ultimate manoeuvrability and the ability to turn on its own axis. This level of agility is enabled through the ‘Syncro-Steer technology’, where the steering and drive are perfectly synchronised to ensure the exact speed and rotating direction of each rear wheel are synchronised with steering wheel control, delivering full steering wheel control of all four wheels. This offers excellent climbing ability, whilst dual hydrostatic transmission further aids this by providing excellent traction on hills thanks to the wide track and low centre of gravity.

Further to this, full steering wheel control makes for easy and pleasurable experience, even after hours of mowing. Comfort is enhanced with a high-back, padded chair with a quick adjuster level, which is perfect when switching users. A truly professional finish is achieved with the advanced cutting system which provides optimal airflow, blade overlap and floating deck, delivering a consistent, flawless, high-quality cut. The 50 inch cutting deck has a cutting height range of 38mm – 100mm adjustable through eight settings, meaning that you are able to create the perfect look for a variety of client needs with just one mower. Not only this, but floating cutting follows the contours of the ground providing a smooth and uniform look and superior cutting, even on an uneven surface. With a three-in-one option to convert the machine between bagging, mulching or side discharge functions, and a mulching plug and deflector included as standard, the RZT-S50 has every option covered. As if all of this wasn’t enough, a deck wash nozzle is also fitted as standard, allowing for a quick and easy method of cleaning the deck after use.

with tractors and other groundscare machinery, so when the chance arose to reapply some of those skills he learnt as a child, he claimed he was in his ‘element’. However, at first, Geoff didn’t have the best of tools to work with: “The last mower we had here was a bit of a so-and-so and I had to tame it quite often. It was a bit old fashioned to be honest and we were having a job to start it. We actually enquired about getting it fixed but it was decided that it might be better just to buy a new one.” It proved to be the right decision as Geoff landed himself a brand new Dennis G34D. Designed to appeal to sports turf managers and professional gardeners alike, the new Dedicated G-Series range of mowers has been designed and built following the same concept as the popular Dennis G860 machine. Available in three different cutting sizes – 26”, 30” and 34” - the mowers incorporate a large-diameter eight-bladed cutting cylinder to cater for a wide range of uses to leave a precision cut. The handlebar design makes manoeuvring the machine easy and comfortable to operate. East Grinstead chose the 34” cutting width model and Geoff hasn’t looked back since:

“We purchased the machine from our local dealer Lister Wilder and one of their managers came along and showed me how to use it. I grasped it very quickly because it’s very easy to use. I was instantly impressed. The first thing I thought was how good the balance of the machine was. “Because of the heavy roller at the front, the mower doesn’t bounce around on the surface like our older mower did. With the last machine we had, I had to hold the handles firmly to stop it from bouncing around everywhere. It cuts beautifully, provides an excellent finish and I like the fact it’s compact – it’s really lightweight and comfortable to operate.” www.dennisuk.com

Cuts beautifully, provides excellent finish Geoff Gilbert, East Grinstead Town FC’s groundsman, has praised his new Dennis G34D cylinder mower, which has been purchased from local dealer Lister Wilder. “I started off being a spectator here but I got more involved and started helping out around the club. Then five years ago I took on the responsibility of looking after the pitch.” Having been raised in the countryside, Geoff gained a great understanding about agricultural life, especially during the Second World War when he and his family would grow vegetables to supply to local shops. Cable-free alternative WOLF-Garten has extended and enhanced its popular range of lawn mowers with the launch of the new 72v battery range, which offers a cable-free alternative. Within the range are three models; the LIONPOWER34, LIONPOWER37 and the LIONPOWER40, with each model number referring to the cutting width in cm and each model suitable for differing lawn size. The LIONPOWER34 is suitable for lawns up to 250sqm, the LIONPOWER37 perfect for lawn sizes up to 350sqm and the LIONPOWER40 is ideal for lawns up to 350sqm. Each model comes equipped with a 72Volt Lithium-ion battery and charger. The high performance batteries are 2.5Ah, have 180Watt hours and are fully charged in 60 minutes. If you are particularly short of time, there is even a super quick change option, which provides an 80% charge after just 45 minutes. Whilst the Lithium-ion battery is a major talking point, the technological and design features do not end there. Each of these precision engineered mowers feature the ACC system – Advanced Cut and Collect. This system generates a strong

airflow to straighten grass stems before cutting, resulting in a beautifully even cut and accelerating the cuttings into the grass bag. The grass bag is equipped with a bag full indicator, a handy feature to let you know when it is time to empty. Further, the CCM – Cut, Collect and Mulch – feature is a flexible mowing system offering a choice between cutting, collecting or mulching. The CCM system integrates all these functions in one machine. The mulching ability is effortless, removing the need to dispose of clippings, and putting nutrients from the cut grass back in to the lawn. The mowers all feature six central cutting heights, from 25 – 75cm, which means that the mowers can be used all season, on any type of lawn, from super-smart manicured lawns to more rustic country-style lawns. In terms of operating, the mowers have been designed to make lawn-mowing a pleasure, not a chore. They all feature quick-release handles with soft grip, providing comfort and safety. In addition, the mowers only run when the safety key is turned, even if the battery is plugged in, offering real peace of mind, especially if there are children around. The mowers chassis are made from lightweight, but hardwearing poly, which further adds to the ease of use and storage. The overall weight of each mower is only 14, 17 and 18kgs, dependent upon which model is selected.

them want to come back to Calais and so they discover what we have created for them.” Eric is currently masterminding a number of improvements to the city which he claims will be “profitable to nature,” and as the areas of green space increase so too does the number of grass cutting operations. For this, Eric relies only upon one brand. “We have had Etesia equipment since 1995. We bought 8 Hydro 100 MVEHH’s which was our first ride-on mower. But we also have about 10 pedestrian mowers from Etesia.” The city of Calais recently added to its collection of Etesia mowers after Eric decided to bring in a fleet of new Hydro 100 III ride-on mowers. Capitalizing on the strengths of its predecessor, the new Etesia Hydro 100 III ride-on mower is innovative, offering commercial users even greater efficiency and operator comfort. It has a modern hydraulic drive transmission with differential lock for improved traction and drivability. Its 18 HP twin-cylinder Kawasaki engine and its larger 14-litre fuel tank give it more power and range. Derived from a unique concept to allow mowing and collection in all weather conditions; the Hydro 100 III is the perfect mower

for professional users who demand the ultimate machine for extreme mowing and collection requirements. “The Hydro 100 III is essential for us because it is particularly versatile,” says Eric. It is the first mower which has enabled us to collect leaves thanks to a very effective suction system, and it even has a snow blade for the winter. “This Etesia machine also enables us to apply several kinds of mowing, either very short flush from the ground on the soccer fields for example, or mulching for the fields that are mowed often, higher cuttings with collecting or even with a deflector to cut tall grass without collecting. “At the end of the day, green areas are part of the business and touristic value of a city or a region. Therefore we must use only the finest equipment to look after them.” Tel 01295 680120 www.etesia.co.uk

Eric Bouton, director of parks for Calais, has praised Etesia for helping him to create a new vision of the port city in northern France. CRX-410 Former handyman and soldier, Eric Bouton, had no idea where his career path would lead him. It was only until he met a particular person in the Loon-Plage town hall who ignited his passion for green space. Since that day he has never looked back and he now finds himself in charge of all the green space areas in Calais. “We want to present another image of Calais - different from the one that categorizes the city as a ‘war zone,’ says Eric. “Calais is a historical city with several beautiful parks and gardens, and museums of fine arts. “My desire is to surprise both locals and tourists - make

Five machines in one During the heavy rain that followed in the wake of Storm Desmond in December last year, Garstang Cricket Club experienced severe flooding with water getting into the pavilion, washing away the perimeter fence, ruining machinery and cricket equipment, such as sight screens and covers, as well as leaving a layer of silt deposited all over the outfield. Since then Head Groundsman, Tom Wells, has been working tirelessly to get the pitches up and running for the start of the new season. To assist in the reparations, Philip Dixon Contractors Ltd was drafted in with their new Amazone Groundkeeper set up in scarifying mode. This Lancashire based company, which was formed in 1978 by Philip Dixon, is still a familyrun firm in the hands of Philip Dixon and his wife Catherine, together with sons Ryan, Sam and Tom and a team of highly - experienced loyal staff. They have always been a forward thinking business offering a personal service with a reputation for professionalism and quality of work that goes

back over 50 years. Although with its roots in land drainage, the company also now provides a complete service in the amenity sector from re-grading, laser levelling, preparation and seeding work, through to maintenance operations including scarifying, sand slitting, top dressing, etc. A policy of continuous investment in machinery and training has resulted in an extensive fleet of specialist machinery as well as a team of experienced operators that undertakes work mainly in the North West, and, as part of this investment, they recently added a Groundkeeper GHL/T 1500 SmartCut flail mower collector from local Amazone Groundcare dealer, GGM Groundcare, to their extensive fleet. The Groundkeeper, with its over-dimensioned, horizontal flail SmartCut rotor, offers the ultimate in flexible operation. The SmartCut rotor has a mixture of blades and paddles that are arranged in a chevron pattern to reduce power requirement, improve the collecting ability and reduce noise levels. These free-swinging blades overlap each other fully and which shred the cuttings into short lengths to ensure the maximum utilisation of the hopper space and also to give the fastest possible composting rates. The rotor sucks up the cut material or any other surface debris, wet or dry, and deposits it into the huge capacity, high-tip hopper. The rear height roller also leaves not only a smart striped finish, but also consolidates the soil surface to prevent moisture loss, improve root development and generally strengthen the sward. And those blades can be changed within minutes, and without tools, depending on the application required. On offer is a choice of grass flails for rough cut work in scrub and heather, a mix of grass and wing blades for normal green space work or a sharpened long wing blade for fine turf work. The scarifying knives, in either 2mm or 3mm thickness can be inserted in between the normal mowing blades or run on their own depending on the depth of slit and degree of aggressiveness required. In scarifying mode, the set-up is ideal for collecting cores after a power corer on golf course greens and green approaches with the resulting soil/sward mix making an ideal top-dressing material. It takes leaf, litter collection, or any other organic matter for that matter, in its stride and can work not just on grass but on hard surfaces as well during the autumn leaf campaign. It is this versatility in being able to carry out multiple operations that makes the Groundkeeper such an obvious investment as, here at Philip Dixon Contractors Ltd, the machine will be used constantly across a varied client base

which includes cricket, football and golf clubs as well as with local councils in their autumn/winter clearing programmes. And delivery of the new machine could not have been timelier as it went into immediate operation on the back of a Kubota STV 40 compact at Garstang Cricket Club to assist in lifting the silt deposits left by the flooding; leaving the soil surface aerated to get back that root strength and nutrient supply following on from being stood under water for days on end. ‘Dixons and the Amazone have done a great job on this surface, it has allowed us to achieve the desired results in one pass, leaving a lovely rolled finish’ said Mr Wells and Ryan Dixon, Contracts Manager at Philip Dixon Contractors Ltd, added, ‘We’re all delighted with the performance of the Amazone, it’s the complete SmartCut-Landscaper-Mar16:108x150 10/3/16 package’.

Dansand No Weed says Ted McLoughlin, Sales Director at Active Products, who are the exclusive distributors for the Dansand range here in the UK. “It seems labour-intensive gardens are on the wane and busy homeowners, particularly urban dwellers are opting for a wide range of paved areas as part of their garden space. No Weed is a very popular solution because of its eco-friendly credentials and ability to prevent weeds between joints, creating a long-lasting and beautiful finish for any paved outdoor space.” All this makes kiln-dried Dansand products ideal for narrow joints in drives, patios and pathways. And the most suitable product available for weed busting and abatement in pathways old and new. Tel 01371 872842

and updating of the Japanese Knotweed Code of Practice. The announcement was made at the recent INNSA conference in Derby by Trevor Renals of the Environment Agency, who explained that the Code had evolved out of a demand from the commercial sector for information on how to control and manage Japanese Knotweed: “The Environment Agency initially authored the practice as a comprehensive guide to all those dealing with this problematic species. However, the time has now come to hand over the management of the Code to the industry to self-govern and I have every confidence that INNSA and its governing body will help the Code evolve to meet legislative requirements and continually promote best practice.” David Layland, INNSA director and joint managing director of Japanese Knotweed Control commented: “We respect all the hard work that Trevor and the Environment Agency have put into producing this valuable document over the past decade and INNSA will now diligently administer it in the future.” Tel : 0845 643 1168 www.japaneseknotweedcontrol.com

lighting

the professionals’ choice Trade accounts with online ordering real time stock availability discount & next day delivery

You have control! That scary moment when your flying instructor takes his hands off the control of the aircraft! No worries though with Garden Lighting. There are many ways to control how it looks, how bright it is and when it comes on or off. Martin Bennett reports To help you get the best effects experimentation is an absolute necessity. LED bulbs should always be used, they last longer, have low running costs and are available in different power outputs ( watts) and different colour temperatures ranging from warm white ( 3000K) to a cool almost blue Daylight white (6500K) with Cool White ( 4-5000K) in between. By using luminaires with replaceable bulbs rather than built in LED’s you will be able to refine your garden lighting. Once you have the effects you want the last thing you need to do is control when your lights are switched on and off. There are several ways of doing this automatically depending on the level of sophistication you want and your budget. Perhaps the most sophisticated way is to use a lighting control system such as “light Symphony”. This system can even

be controlled by your Smartphone and can switch on and off different sectors of your lighting scheme at different times. A simpler way is to install a timer on each of the outdoor electrical circuits. A “DIN RAIL” timer is best for this and can be installed alongside the breakers in your Consumer unit electrical box. If there is no room in your electrical box then another less expensive way is to use outdoor waterproof sockets with built in timers. Timers can be a pain you say “I am always having to adjust them as daylight times change throughout the year”. A simple answer to this is to install a photocell in series with the lights. This will keep the lights switched off during daylight only turning them on when it gets dark. The timer will then switch them off at midnight or whatever hour you choose. Photocells are available in both 12v and 240v to control all types of Garden and outdoor lights. The last choice may be a PIR that can be used to light areas such as paths only when they are being used, again both 12v and 240v standalone PIR’s are available. A team of award winning garden designers, led by Vanessa Blain took part in a “Professional Lightscaping” workshop held at Lighting for Gardens Letchworth showroom. Members of the Hertfordshire Society of Garden Designers attended the seminar which included some interesting presentations on; How to light trees, Creating lighting schemes within technical drawings and layouts, the pitfalls of steplighting and the qualities of LED lighting. The event was well received by garden designers who had taken time out to visit us and keen to find out more about specialist garden lighting. Water Features Water is always a prime candidate for lighting, whether it is moving or still. Underwater uplighting of a waterfall or fountain is a common and effective technique using a halogen underwater light; glistening water and the shimmering light projected by underwater lighting through moving water can be fascinating.

Trees Uplighting is the most commonly used garden lighting technique, for shrub borders and trees especially. By uplighting trees, one exploits a unique opportunity to add vertical emphasis and drama. Trees with an open habit allow

light to fully display the branch structure, while the contrast of colour between subjects can be emphasised. Steps Lighting steps for safety is an obvious requirement in any garden, but functionality can be coupled with decorative merit if the lighting is subtle - picking out texture and colour of treads as well as highlighting their location, for example. Decking Deck lighting by installing lights in a deck is usually

56

concerned with outlining the shape to create an illuminated pattern at night. Small, low power l.e.d. deck lights are the best - use deck lights with a frosted lens (to protect the led from scuffing and soften the sometimes piercing appearance l.e.d. can have within the fitting) and a chamfered edge so there is less to stub your toe on. Top-quality LED systems from manufacturers like Wilderness Lighting provide massive levels of illumination from light bars that are discreet, offer long life and are unbelievably tough. Established car makers like Volkswagen are now using full LED headlamps in their latest models. Health and safety is the biggest issue in the landscaping and agriculture industry. The LED light from wilderness lights are using LEDs that give a very White light, this light gives more contrast when working at night and also is closer to natural sunlight which the human eye prefers, the Old halogen light gives out a yellow light which we have to adapt to and this tires our eyes and can lead to driver fatigue. By using LEDs this fatigue is no longer an issue and will lead to a safer and brighter working environment. A 55w light gives out around 800 to 900 lumens, one Wilderness Compact lights give out over 3200 lumens and only asks for 2.8 Amps at 12 volts verses the 5 amps from the halogen. Toughness is important in lights that are going to be used off-road, and the IP69K rating says it doesn’t come any tougher than Wilderness. The highest protection level available on the international scale, this means the company’s lights are 100% dusttight and watertight even against high-pressure, hightemperature close-range sprays. Wilderness lights have an average lifespan of 50,000-

plus hours and come with a lens that’s both scratch-proof and unbreakable. Again, just what you want on an off-road machine. They’re easy to fit with simple ‘plug and play’ connectors featuring surge protection and waterproof switches. They draw a fraction of the power needed by standard lights, while delivering a massive output of pure white light. As well as the standard black finish. With LED lights you get what you pay for. The LEDs themselves are classed by their manufacturers according to the strength of their output, from Grade A for the very best to Grade E for the weakest. All Wilderness Lighting products only use exclusively Grade A LEDs. The LEDs’ manufacturers price them according to their grade, so Class A is always more expensive than Class B. This means the only way to make a profit by selling cheap light bars is to use lower-quality LEDs. All Wilderness Lighting come with a three year warranty. And they’re supported by a UK distribution network. Wilderness Lighting only uses Class A LEDs from Cree and Olson, the top two names in the business – so you can be sure that as well as offering first-class customer service, Wilderness will have the products to go with it. Specialist natural and synthetic turf contractor CLS Sports has completed a full-size hockey facility with bespoke floodlighting at historic Yarm School as part of a £2m multifaceted project at the Stockton-on-Tees private school. Working on an environmentally sensitive site bounded by local housing, existing school buildings and sports facilities, CLS brought in their Landscape and Earthworks team to contour the sloping site ready for installation of pitch, which is sited on the floodplain of the river Tees. The contractor worked closely with the local authority and the school to develop the flexible, collaborative approach vital for delivery of the scheme. The advanced drainage system includes a 480m3 attenuation tank to counterbalance the earth removed from the floodplain to create the new pitch. CLS laid a Domo Hockey Xtreme 18mm sand-dressed carpet on top of a fully engineered base that included pozidrain system, reduced fines sub-base, grit layer, macadam engineered bass and shockpad.

The contractor’s own fleet of specialist equipment was used to install the facility, including their laser grader and CLS Selfdrive plant and machinery to achieve the required precision tolerances for the sub-base and grit layers. Other key elements of the CLS Sports project included a new boathouse overlooking the river, extensive hard and soft landscaping and new car resin-bonded parking embracing sustainable drainage. www.cls-sports.co.uk

Rain won’t halt play Global adhesives specialist Bostik has launched a new All Weather Wide Jointing Compound for paths and patios, specially formulated for use in wet and dry weather conditions. Suitable for joints from 5mm to 30mm in width, the new jointing compound requires no mixing or special tools during installation; it can simply be brushed and compacted into the joints. Once cured, it forms a solid joint that resists weed growth and enables power washing or mechanical cleaning. Supplied in a 20kg tub containing two 10kg foil packs, Bostik All Weather Wide Jointing Compound is designed for use with most paving types and is unaffected by salt or freezing conditions. Applied wet, the new compound

eliminates the staining associated with traditional cement methods. Its fast drying properties allow surfaces to hold foot traffic in as little as ten hours. Andrew Hamman, Category Manager at Bostik, said: “We developed our newest jointing compound in response to demand from builders for a fast drying, all-weather compound that can be applied in virtually any weather conditions. The unpredictable British climate can often put a halt to outdoor work, but now patio and paving installations can be completed whatever the weather and still produce the same high quality results.” Bostik Wide Jointing Compound is available in natural or grey colour. Each 20kg tub provides coverage of up to 13m2. www.bostik.co.uk Tel 01785 272625.

Patio kits, stepping stones, edgings and walling Research suggests UK households spend an average of £123 a year on their gardens, with keener gardeners spending up to £30,000 over their lifetime on a variety of garden products. With these figures in mind, Kelkay is determined to give customers the best choice, the best quality and the best value for their money. The Borderstone range includes many of the country’s favourite patio kits, stepping stones, edgings and walling. Antony Harker, managing director of Kelkay, told The Landscaper, “We’ve invested a great deal recently in market intelligence and used these deep insights to create a real impact in-store with new products and striking merchandising. This investment is paying off through excellent sales volumes for retailers of our Borderstone range.” New to the Borderstone range are the Abbey 1.5m and 2.4m Twist Circle paving available in the bestselling colours, antique and York gold. More choice, greater flexibility Lafarge General Purpose Cement is now available in 25kg bags from Aggregate Industries. The new range, which includes two products – General Purpose and General Purpose+ – features the distinctive new Lafarge Cement branding so it’s easy to identify at the builders’ merchant yard. General Purpose comes in a standard paper bag while General Purpose+ benefits from a waterproof bag design, which means it can be stored outside, whatever the weather. The packaging also offers greater strength, meaning it is less likely to tear, reducing wastage and returns. Both products are carefully blended and packed to ensure the quality and consistency of the mix is guaranteed every time. Jeremy Lee, Commercial Director of Aggregate Industries’ Building Products division, told The Landscaper, “We have extended our range of packed products to offer more choice, greater flexibility and complete peace of mind to customers working with bagged cement. The new waterproof bag design of General Purpose+ not only helps extend the shelf life of the cement, keeping it fresher for longer, it also means it can be stored outside on the job. If it rains, there’s no need to cover or remove it from site as unopened, it’s completely air and water tight.” www.lafargecement.co.uk.

Hailed for design innovation and longevity Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has collaborated on a top London residential project, Trafalgar Place in Elephant & Castle, which is being hailed for design innovation and longevity. The project, part of a wider £1.5 billion, 28 acre regeneration scheme to upgrade and reconnect Elephant & Castle with the mostly derelict Heygate Estate, saw an office block converted into a development of 235 homes. With a brief to create a quality urban residential space, Charcon was consulted to recommend approximately 3,500m2 of hard landscaping options that would establish a strong relationship between the green spaces of both

the private communal and public areas, to the adjacent buildings and edges. 1,840m2 of Charcon’s Andover Textured flag and block paving in Midnight Grey, Silver Grey and Light Grey was supplied, offering a premium quality block paving product at an affordable price. Pairing the unique three colour blend with five different block sizes specified Andover Textured offers an eye-catching design solution that runs throughout all of the main tree-lined avenues of the scheme. 1,050m2 of premium Appalachian flag paving in Leemoor Ground was used for an upper private courtyard podium. Incorporating up to 60% recycled and reclaimed materials, the uniquely formulated granite aggregates offer exceptional performance and durability. Charcon’s technical specialists also created a bespoke product for the project, producing 250m2 of ‘Special’ Appalachian Leemoor. Using a double process prior to sandblasting to expose a greater amount of aggregate, the end product was a unique polished and sandblasted finish which, when laid alongside the Leemoor Ground, created a distinctive contrast of textures within the private courtyard.

In addition, 100 linear metres of hard wearing Natural Granite kerbs and radii in Silver Grey were incorporated to create features throughout the scheme, and 240m2 of Europa block.
