Increasingly urbanised world While the world’s population is doubling, the world’s urban population is tripling. Within the next few years, more than half the world’s population will be living in urban areas. The modern city should not only be pavement and concrete. Parks, gardens, trees, and other plants must be an integral part of the urban environment. Plants on vertical and horizontal surfaces are able to cool cities during hot summer months and reduce pollution - toxic air is blamed for a rapidly rising death toll. Urban greening has long been promoted as an easy and effective strategy for beautifying the built environment and increasing
investment opportunity. Our move to the cities has wider ramifications. The 2016 European Landscape Conference is to be held at the Royal Agricultural University, at Cirencester in September. The threat to mankind’s traditional relationship with the natural world is why this inaugural Conference has been launched. The event will be open to the public, industry, professions and academia, It is sponsored by the Society of Garden Designers and the London College of Garden Design. The event is operated as a not for profit organisation and has already secured support from key industry leaders, professionals and academics.
The Landscaper welcomes this conference as we believe radical thought and new ideas are now a priority to keeping our land green and pleasant.
Rapid growth Branson Tractors are the international brand of Kukje Machinery Co. Ltd. of South Korea selling 20,000 compact tractors a year globally from the ‘00’ series of 31-30hp up to the ‘K’ series 6578 hp. It was in mid 2015 that Kukje Machinery appointed The Compact Tractor Centre of Bidford on Avon as the UK sole importer and distributor of the Branson Tractor range. The Compact Tractor Centre and their parent company Lewis Equipment founded in 1979 are no strangers to the sports turf and groundcare sector. Managing director, Nathan Walker was immediately impressed with the
Branson brand, the innovative engineering, the quality of the build, finish of the bodywork and the competitive price structure. Each new tractor carries a two-year warranty that includes engine, driveline and all original equipment. Also, at Bidford on Avon there will be a complete range of spares with the backing of larger stock held in mainland Europe. Since the launch at last years IOG Saltex a network of nineteen dealers has been established covering England and Wales from the south coast to the Scottish borders. More companies have applied for dealerships and are currently being negotiated. A growing number of machines
can be seen around the country working on sports grounds, cricket fields and football pitches. www.bransontractor.co.uk

BALI members vote ‘Remain’ An online poll of BALI members, carried out in April has shown them to be in favour of remaining in the European Union, albeit by a fairly slender majority and with contractors currently in favour of leaving. 143 members (9%) out of a total membership of 1563 responded, with 75 voting to remain and 68 to leave. BALI’s Registered Designers voted by a 2:1 majority in favour of staying in Europe whereas 57% of the 65 Registered Contractors that responded voted to leave. The association’s Affiliate members (suppliers of products and services) favour remaining, again by a majority of almost 2:1, and all other membership groups, including students, voted to remain. Commenting on this informal poll, BALI’s Chief Executive Wayne Grills said: “The overall outcome of this poll seems to largely reflect other recent polls carried out amongst the general public and indicates that the outcome is really too close to call at this time. It is interesting to see that BALI contractors, by far our largest membership group, apparently consider that exiting the EU will be better for
their businesses whereas our affiliate members, who supply products and services, are of the opposite opinion. And it will undoubtedly be a similar scenario in homes across the country with opinions split.” BALI will be repeating the poll in a month’s time to see if opinions have been swayed by campaigning by the Remain and Leave camps. www.bali.org.uk The Landscaper’s reader poll on this subject is still open, go to www.landscapermagazine.com. Voting to date indicates that 6 out of 10 respondents are in favour of remaining in the EU.

The SG30 Stump Grinder is also fantastically priced because it is supplied directly by us, the manufacturer, with no importing middle men taking their cut. This, combined with superior parts and build quality, will ensure that the operator quickly earns a significant return on their investment. “The outstanding CAMON SG30 Stump Grinder is designed to meet the needs of a variety of users from DIY hirers, to professional contractors, and with a price of just £2,995+VAT it’s extremely competitive and offers fantastic value for money.” Tel 01444 247689 www.tracmaster.co.uk
Time to oxygenate Water management specialist Otterbine is advising greenkeepers to aerate water hazards now, before oxygen depletion or stress situations occur. Maintaining high water quality is an essential part of successful golf course management all year round, but, as greenkeepers will know, both the light and heat generated by the spring/summer sun can quickly lead to severe problems in lakes and ponds. The resultant warmer water and excess nutrients, combined with low oxygen levels and minimal circulation, prematurely ages water and throws the natural ecosystem out of balance. This can lead to algae, aquatic weeds and odours, as well as sludge build up and even dead fish. In order to avoid this, a proper water management system should be put in place as soon as possible. Robert Jackson, Irrigation Manager at Lely Turfcare, Otterbine’s UK
distributor, explains why it’s vital to act now rather than later. “Waiting until symptoms of poor water quality appear before implementing good water management could be detrimental to both the environment and greenkeepers’ budgets,” he warns. “These unwanted symptoms impact on the golfer’s experience and the golf club’s reputation, and may also require costly fixative programmes. Once a lake has lost its ecological balance, it goes into crisis, at which point the cost of restoring it dramatically rises. As well as often being more expensive to implement, reactive solutions tend to be less friendly to the environment too,” Robert explains. To prevent or eliminate stagnant water in a pond or lake, the most natural water quality management solution is to introduce aeration; which is where Otterbine’s aeration systems can help. With solutions suitable for small ponds to vast lakes, Otterbine’s wide range of aeration systems comprise aerating fountains, industrial aerators and diffused air systems. Each has features that work to increase oxygen levels and circulate oxygen rich water, keeping water quality high, and inhibiting algae, aquatic weeds and odours. www.otterbine.com

Tangshan - transforms to a greener city The city of Tangshan in China opened the 2016 Tangshan International Horticultural Exposition. During an amazing opening ceremony, involving performances from hundreds of Tangshan citizens, guests from around the world celebrated the start of this six month event that is expected to attract many millions of visitors. The Expo was opened on 29 April by Mr. Zhang Qingli, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in a ceremony including speeches from other senior officials including Madame Jiang Zehui, President of the China Flower Association (CFA) who congratulated the city of Tangshan on opening such a great event. The Expo covers an area of 2260 ha, including a core area of 540 ha and an experiencing area of 1720 ha in the South Lake Ecological Park, which was built on the site of a former
mining area. Close to the city, the Expo has transformed this derelict lake-side landscape into a beautiful exhibition that will benefit the citizens of Tangshan for generations. The Expo opens during an important anniversary year for the city. Forty years ago the city was hit by a huge earthquake claiming the lives of over 240,000 citizens; this earthquake killed more people than any other during the 20th century. Since then the city has rebuilt itself and has become important for heavy manufacturing. The Expo is open until 16 October 2016 and visitors can see 47 different gardens from different countries as well as different cities and regions within China. The event includes indoor exhibitions for peonies, bonsai and other plants. Visitors can tour the new landscape, enjoy the spectacular water fountain displays, explore the tropical greenhouse and experience the ‘low-carbon lifestyle’ exhibition. www.tangshanexpo2016.com

Eliminate uneven tyre wear - save as much as £500 Standard trailer suspension often causes a problem as the inner edge of the tyres can wear down faster, resulting in the need for premature tyre changes. Towmate trailer axles are manufactured with toe-in and positive camber, thus eliminating uneven tyre wear. Based on a twin axle trailer set of tyres costing approximately £168, it can save as much as £500 over the life of a trailer, let alone the time, fitting and inconvenience saved with a trailer off the road. Towmate trailers were launched in 2015 by ATE (UK) Ltd, specialist suppliers of towing equipment and spares since 1995. Years of focusing on every aspect of towed equipment has enabled ATE to offer a comprehensive range of robust, high quality trailers that are more than equal to the demanding rugged use expected by today’s landscapers. Central to the Towmate trailer design is the fully welded (not bolted or riveted), hot dipped galvanized steel chassis, strong A-frame drawbar and quality rubber torsion suspension, all of which are inherent features across the range. All 1800kg axles are constructed using strong 100mm box section, thus boasting the strongest axles in the market. Towmate trailers are available in a range of different styles

Award Winning Volunteer Groundsman Robin Taylor, a volunteer groundsman for Grendon Rangers, a FA Charter Standard Club, has sworn by his Etesia Hydro 100 for the last twenty-one years. In that time he has picked up five awards and believes it is down to his trusty ride-on mower. His pitch has played a large part in ensuring that the club meets the FA pyramid step 7 criteria. Grendon Rangers FC has two senior teams and six youth teams from Under 7’s upwards. It’s a good, successful footballing organisation for all ages, but arguably the club’s star performer is Robin – who dedicates up to 12 hours a week of his spare time to ensure that players have a good pitch to play on. “My whole purpose in doing what I do is to have a nice level pitch that the players can play football on and it has to be safe pitch - no divots, no big cracks and nothing that can hurt a player. “We all have past-times and my past-time is football. I enjoy maintaining the pitches and I enjoy watching as well. My reward is looking at the presentation of the pitches and watching the game without anyone picking up an injury,” said Robin. “I use the Etesia Hydro 100 ride-on mower which is what I call my right arm. It is so adaptable and I can do whatever I want as far as grass cutting goes. It’s a work horse for me really and I use it for everything I do. “The cut is excellent – it is clean, can cut to any length, and the clippings come out the back of the machine without any loss of suction and it leaves the pitches nice and tidy,” said Robin. As well as using the Hydro 100 to cut the pitch, he also adapts it for a number of other tasks. He uses it as a tractor unit to tow a slitter, roller, drag mat and he also uses it with a ‘hopper’ style basket on the back to transport top soil, sand and any other materials required. www.etesia.co.uk
was first found in the UK last year, in Farningham woods near Sevenoaks in Kent, and a street in St Albans in Hertfordshire. On Tuesday the Forestry Commission said it was elevating the wasp to its list of high-priority tree pests because of the 2015 outbreaks. There are 268 pests on the UK Plant Health Risk register but just 12 are ranked as high priority because of their impact and likelihood, including the fungus that causes ash dieback, sudden oak death disease and the emerald ash borer. While the wasp poses no risk to humans and pets, its larvae cause abnormal growths — the eponymous galls — on sweet chestnut trees. These can weaken the tree and leave it more vulnerable to other pests and diseases. Nick Atkinson, senior conservation adviser at the Woodland Trust, said: “The arrival of another pest in the UK reminds us how pathways are still open for these threats, which is also why it’s so important for anyone who loves trees and woods to be vigilant and help identify possible outbreaks at an early stage”.

Topsport joins BIGGA
Tarmac’s Topsport, which has contributed to some of the biggest construction projects in the UK, has become the latest organisation to join the BIGGA support team. Tarmac is the 19th industry organisation to sign up as an Education Supporter of the greenkeepers’ association, while 10 others count themselves as BIGGA Partners. Peter Cullen, Technical Sales Manager for Tarmac’s Topsport team, told The Landscaper, “There has never been a more exciting time to be involved in UK greenkeeping and golf course architecture, as the research and development and subsequent products and techniques that were once the domain of the world’s elite courses are now accessible by greenkeepers at clubs of all levels. “We are looking forward to continuing developing and sharing innovative solutions for greenkeepers and hope that by supporting the BIGGA Education programme we can contribute to helping the UK greenkeeping industry flourish.” Peter explained how the ongoing success of the greenkeeping industry depends upon the Continuing Professional Development of both the current and next generation of greenkeepers. “As a manufacturer who has been fortunate to work with some of the most innovative and forward thinking greenkeepers working across the country, we have learnt first-hand how the key to achieving the best-performing product, be it a free draining bunker liner or an entirely holistic approach to delivering a complete tee to green solution, is to work in partnership with those who know the game inside and out.”
Tarmac was involved in the construction of major UK projects such as Wembley Stadium, the Shard and London 2012. BIGGA’s Business Development Manager Jill Rodham said: “Education is at the heart of all BIGGA’s activity, so
we are delighted to add Tarmac’s Topsport to our roster of BIGGA Education Supporters. “Tarmac has a century and a half of experience and we are looking forward to tapping into that experience to benefit our members and continuing to increase our learning and development offering.” www.tarmac.com

Robust and reliable The new agile V6 diesel engine for the Amarok meets the customer requirement for high torque at low engine speeds. The powerful top-of-the-line sixcylinder engine produces its maximum torque at only 1,500 rpm. At 550 Nm, this maximum torque is also 130 Nm higher than in the previous model. The Amarok is thus able to deliver sufficient propulsive power and torque performance in any situation. The highest gear’s long gear ratio in the manual or 8-speed automatic gearbox reduces revs and fuel consumption during consistently fast driving, and thus helps ensure low noise levels and CO2 emissions. The combined NEDC fuel consumption of the new Amarok with 224 PS and 8-speed automatic gearbox is expected to be 7.6 litres/100 km (around 37 mpg)*. This corresponds to a new top level of 199 grams CO2/km *. The model’s engine is designed to be robust and longlasting. The 3.0-litre TDI engine (2,967 cc) in the new Amarok will be available in three output levels: 120 kW / 163 PS, 150 kW / 204 PS or a top-performing 165 kW / 224 PS. All engines comply with the Euro 6 emissions standard. The most

New lease of life for surfaces TigerTurf UK has unveiled TenCate Ecocept, a pioneering new system which makes use of recycled plastics and old artificial surfaces in the construction of brand new artificial grass pitches (AGPs). Providing a comprehensive solution to the issue of what to do with ageing AGPs, the environmentally-friendly base layer from the manufacturer’s parent company TenCate also

carries a host of benefits for ground stabilisation, drainage, sports performance and overall environmental impact. Ecocept has been specially developed to prevent as many used materials as possible from going to landfill, with up to 90% of the product made from otherwise landfilled products such as end of life plastics and rubber crumb. Not only does this offer the option of closed-loop recyclability, but it has the potential to save as much as 140 tonnes of materials from going to landfill - the equivalent of £30,000 in costs compared to traditional installations. Additionally, the carbon footprint of each new pitch is further reduced by the layer’s high load-bearing capacity – meaning fewer truckloads of soil are removed at the installation stage – whilst Ecocepts impressive drainage properties help to avoid costly trenched drainage below the field, making the solution as cost effective as it is useful. Given that the new base layer is compatible with many of TigerTurf’s synthetic turf products, the manufacturer can now offer a complete and eco-friendly solution for investors looking to reduce their impact on the environment without compromising on performance. Paul Langford, Managing Director at TigerTurf UK told The Landscaper, “The traceability of materials and what happens to surfaces after they are recycled is an increasingly important issue within the industry, and we’re thrilled to be able to deliver a simple but comprehensive solution. “Research and development is at the heart of everything we do and it’s fantastic to be able to demonstrate this commitment with the launch of this innovative new system. Not only does Ecocept give a new lease of life for surfaces which would otherwise end up in a landfill, but its versatility and performance extends the array of benefits TigerTurf surfaces can offer.” www.tigerturf.co.uk

Peonies, roses, foxgloves and oak trees The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced some of the plant trends and stand-out themes at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016 (24-28 May), sponsored by M&G Investments. Peonies are a design favourite this year and roses feature prominently. Other popular flowers include alliums, achillea, foxgloves, irises, lavender and geum. Box Hedging feature in the plans of eight gardens including Charlie Albone’s ‘The Husqvarna Garden‘ but many clipped alternatives to box, such as yew and bay are also used. Ferns are proving popular with some designers, while others have turned to plants such as Bracken and Horsetail to add beauty to a garden. Oak trees are a predominant feature being used by designers such as Cleve West. Guy Barter, RHS Chief Horticulturalist, told The Landscaper, “Dramatically exotic peonies are set to be leading actors this year and have proved to be an interesting and exciting plant choice for designers such as Matthew Wilson and Hay Hwang. Roses are also popular, with Jo Thompson featuring the beautiful bloom. Rose-related enquiries topped our RHS advisory list this year and are much loved by gardeners. “Pastel predominates as a colour, but there is a healthy amount of green seen in many of the gardens, with rich plantings of ferns. Ferns don’t tend to be readily stocked in plant centres, so I wonder if this will now change as people are inspired by what they see at the Show. “A real point of interest is that so many oaks feature in plans – an iconic UK tree at a time when so much ash is suffering and oak processionary moth is moving into the countryside and tree disease Xylella fastidiosa, albeit one adapted to olives, is spreading in Europe – a subliminal concern for this tree perhaps? “Based on our Gardening Advice service, our members may well be quite surprised to see some weeds in RHS Chelsea gardens – but everyone knows a weed is just a plant in the wrong place.” David Austin Roses launches the new English shrub rose, ‘Roald Dahl’, which is named in honour of the world’s number one storyteller and marks 100 years since his birth as part of the official Roald Dahl 100 celebrations. Appropriately the blooms are peach-coloured, acknowledging Roald’s ‘James and the Giant Peach’, which was his first literary success in 1961. The ‘Roald Dahl’ rose is a remarkably

free-flowering rose with the blooms produced almost continuously. The ‘Princess Charlotte’ chrysanthemum by Deliflor is launching in honour of the royal baby. Other new plants include Acer ‘Moonrise’ by Hillier Nurseries, hosta ‘Smiling Mouse’ by Hogarth Hostas, vibrant and deep red ‘Cherry Kiss’ by Millais Nurseries. .

Academy Day at Flower Show Five Writtle College students will be part of a team of young people manning this year’s Hillier Show Garden in the Great Pavilion at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The ‘Hillier Academy Day’, which will take place on Friday 27 May, is the brainchild of staff at the 150-yearold Hillier Nurseries and aims to showcase horticultural careers and what horticulture offers young people. From 8am to 8pm, the younger generation will be managing the Show Garden, fielding gardening queries from show visitors, maintaining the plant material and sharing information and advice with gardeners. This year, Hillier have opted for a design by Sarah Eberle, the acclaimed garden designer and former Design Director of Hillier Landscapes. Considered part of the family, Sarah has won Gold in every garden category at Chelsea (Artisan, Fresh and Show Gardens), but has never before exhibited in the Great Pavilion. In a stunning departure from the traditional Hillier woodland exhibits of the past, Sarah has designed a Show Garden for plant-lovers. She has taken the very best trees and shrubs that Hillier has to offer – with the same exacting focus on plant quality for which Hillier is renowned – and presented them in a fresh, exciting, contemporary way. The theme of ‘Hillier in Spring time’ is a celebration of spring-flowering trees and plants. The planting is designed to showcase different plant communities, plants that both grow successfully together and combine beautifully, to both educate and inspire visitors. The five Writtle College horticulture students taking part

Chelsea garden relocation Greenfingers, the charity dedicated to creating gardens for children in hospices, is close to completing the relocation of the Royal Bank of Canada 2015 Chelsea Flower Show garden to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice on the Isle of Wight as planting began on the garden build yesterday. Matthew Wilson, Greenfingers trustee and award-winning designer of the garden from Chelsea Flower Show 2015 was on site to plant up the garden. Others getting their hands dirty in the final push to complete the garden included volunteers from the island, Craig Ratcliff and the team from CAR Gardens who have build the garden, staff from the hospice and representatives from Greenfingers.
Deborah Skillicorn, Greenfingers Charity Director, said of the relocation to Earl Mountbatten: “Greenfingers involvement in relocating this beautiful garden to its fantastic new home at Earl Mountbatten on the Isle of Wight has been a wonderful example of how we aim to help hospices by providing inspiring outside spaces. As the hospice here embarks on caring for more children and young people on the island, this project epitomises all that we try to do as a charity in marrying hospices and children in need with inspiring gardens which will, particularly in this case, bringing untold benefits to all who spend time in them. www.greenfingerscharity.org.uk

Life afirming landscapes According to the Government Department for Communities and Local Government, house building in the UK has almost reached pre-recession levels. Completions rose from 106,720 during 2010 to 131,060 in the twelve months to June 2015. Report by Carol Dutton. The National House Building Council (NHBC) which represents 80% of new home registrations reports an eight year high in 2015 with 75% more new homes registered than in 2009 and building growth in nine out of twelve regions across the UK. Their total figure of 156,140 registrations is broken down into house types with flats and maisonettes topping the list at 31%, detached and semi-detached properties at 27% and 23%, terraced at 17% and bungalows trailing at 2% where they’ve been for the last ten years. Judging by the high percentage of new flats and maisonettes and the ages of new house buyers (again from NHBC statistics), with the under 34 year olds topping the list at 39%, and the over 55 year olds coming second, along with the 36 to 44 year olds at 23%, it looks as if not only increasing numbers of our population are now living in accommodation without a private garden, but the majority of them, (unless the over 55year olds are upsizing to detached properties rather than downsizing, and the under 34 year olds have the means to provide hefty mortgage deposits) are either young professionals or middle aged couples on their way to retirement. Add to these new home owners, existing tenants of high density housing estates with little or no private outside areas other than a small balcony and the numbers

increase, imbuing the surrounding communal landscape with even more importance. But what are the key elements that will combine to create a life affirming environment as opposed to a blank space? “We find that generally younger people will have no interest in gardening” says Jeremy Pugh, owner of J & S Scapes, a design and build company from Buckinghamshire. “Whatever the size of plot we feel that the starting point of any design is the people, who they are and what they need. We’re looking at the ages of residents, whether they are elderly, whether there are any children, and the total budget for the work. A lot of people won’t go outside unless there’s something to draw them. This could be a walkway, a pergola, herb beds or what ever relates to the overall design. There needs to be a point of interest, a destination.” Jeremy has found that with ground floor apartments porcelain paving can be used both inside and out, (the outside of a thicker quality) which unites a kitchen for example, through French doors, to the patio outside, reducing the boundary between outside and in. This is an idea that could easily be utilized in

future builds J & S Scapes. space for barbecues and views.” Richard Bickler, owner of Arbour Design and Build, started his business in North West London in 1996 and is an advocate of artificial grass in its own place. “I can’t believe it,” he says. “I’m a horticulturalist who trained at Capel Manor College and I’ve seen so much ruined, natural grass that I’m even considering artificial grass in my own garden.” When considering communal landscapes, as well as low maintenance Richard puts interest and variety top of his list. a ground floor communal lounge area adjoining a garden. He also recommends water features for their sound and low maintenance qualities and hedging as a sound barrier to combat traffic noise. Kate Miller, one of the design team at Woodhouse Landscape who design and build for private clients at the top end of the market also favours water features. “People are drawn to water, it’s very inclusive and very peaceful” she says. “I would suggest natural planting as its simple and clean and different hard landscaping materials. Ideally a mix of different, natural hard landscaping materials, to create something that stands out. Older people need accessibility whereas young professionals will probably need an entertainment area. Views are important especially from blocks of flats. The location of each project, whether it’s in the city centre or in the country influences the landscape design.” P.R.P. Landscapes, the landscape architects responsible for landscape design at the re-generated Tower Hamlets estate in London, and the award winning Pilgrims Gardens, a sheltered housing and care home scheme at Evington in Leicester, are currently working on a regeneration project for Circle Housing Group called Orchard Village, in Rainham, Essex. The project has 555 units housing a mixed tenure. Landscape Director Adrian Judd says that these days housing blocks in town are commonly eight storeys high, creating a higher density of population. “One of the first things we look at with every scheme is how to minimize the impact of traffic,” he says. “We need to make the communal space functional and useable with pro residential gardens, communal spaces, play spaces and quiet spaces. Planting plays a big role in defining areas. You can feel as if you’re in a gold fish bowl. Quiet, secluded areas are important.” As well as being attractive all year round, Adrian feels that the landscape needs to be something that residents can actively enjoy. “There needs to be something to entice you out,” he continues, “we need to get people walking, and cycling and we have to look at the whole combination of squares, streets and gardens. New apartments for young professionals usually have generous balconies, but we need to provide interest at all levels with roof terraces,
“Colour, texture, and sound should all feature with a variety of paving from brickware, porcelain and sleepers,” he continues. “We’re not using much man made stuff these days, not much concrete. You need colour all year and in areas with limited space green walls, both artificial and real are useful. As far as the design goes I’d be looking at how people will use the space. Older people will need hand rails, non slip surfaces and lighting. We need to look at the safety angle and when it comes to planting, ask ourselves if they have any allergies. Young children may want a sensory space with water to walk through and plants that wave in the wind.” Noel Farrer, president of The Landscape Institute and whose

landscape architect practice Farrer Huxley Associates has been responsible for the regeneration of the Abbey Orchard Estate in Westminster and the Priory Green Estate in Islington, both for Peabody, is passionate that the ‘landscape’ must be considered holistically in the wider context of buildings and terrain. “Developers tend to have two or three standard house types which they know will sell, they plonk them down regardless of the site character and they look out of place and inappropriate. Both the existing built and un-built landscape need to be considered first and then we decide whether we’re going to fit in with what’s already there or create a contrast,” he says. “Once that’s been decided we need to think about who the landscape is for, and we need to consider the social geography of the place. What is the cultural diversity of
the people who are going to live there? Are they primarily young families with children, a particular ethnic group or the elderly? Watching children play is important for the elderly, whereas if we’re working within an agricultural landscape we’ll be looking to interpret hedges, walls and gates which are part of the familiar surroundings. We should have a clear understanding of the requirements of residents and make sure that the changing nature of the landscape corresponds with what people need and want.” Prior to 2010, when the communal landscape at the Abbey Orchard estate was completed the predominantly elderly residents had no outside space other than tarmac car parks. Only about 10% of residents had their own vehicles and other bays were rented out. “This situation was not contributing to the quality of people’s lives and residents felt lonely and hemmed in. One elderly man said he rarely stepped outside his own front door,” Noel remembers. Having suggested the creation of a landscape that would deliver a more life affirming space for the residents, Peabody said they would consider it if 70% of the occupants agreed. Staff from Farrer Huxley Associates spent weeks canvassing

on site and once they had attained an 80% mandate the scheme went ahead. “Peabody spent around £660,000 for the works to be undertaken, and had to accept the lost revenue from previously rented car parking, as well as providing maintenance for the new landscape and managing the space. The incredible thing is that they’re happy with it. They realize that the benefits to the people who live there are far out weighing the cost.” Another Peabody owned housing development, the Priory Green Estate in Islington has a listed 1960s apartment block designed by Berthold Lubetkin as well as more recent, high rise housing of mixed tenure. The Landscape Architects, again Farrer Huxley Associates needed to work with the quality of the existing landscape character while fulfilling the diverse needs of residents. “Lubetkin understood that the urban landscape is man made and he didn’t want to create a deceit,” Noel explains. “Priory Green is a very much man made piece of civic realm, utilizing the forms and materials appropriate for the modernist architecture whilst providing 21st century possibilities for play and socializing.” Noel assured Peabody that there was no legal requirement for fencing around the children’s playground removing the idea that the children’s zone is within a fenced area. Interestingly, the sculpted grass formations have proved more popular with children than the formal play area. “They can be waves, part of a lunar landscape or anything the kids imagine them to be,” says Noel. “It’s very important to provide quality in social housing areas because of a pervasive discrimination that these areas are not worth it” he continues, “but we must deliver quality which is of course as appreciated and respected by social residents as much as any other.” Quality in both design and materials doesn’t come cheap but quality of life is the priceless benefit of good communal landscape. We have the experience and expertise but as Kate Miller points out, private developers often put landscape at the bottom of their list of priorities, demanding the area looks as good as possible for the least capital outlay. Here’s hoping that the money will be available to allow the industry to deliver.

Seven new models As part of a wholesale upgrade of the McCormick tractor range, seven new models have been developed for sports and amenity groundscare applications with unique transmission and engine combinations plus a spacious cab that will appeal to operators and ownerdrivers alike. The McCormick X4 Series is a small full-size tractor design with power outputs from 64hp to 107hp and a wide choice of specifications to suit different applications and budgets. Notable features include optional creeper gears and ground drive power take-off for specialist turf maintenance machinery; a low-revs Eco 40kph transmission option for more fuel-efficient road travel; and a new cab design that is spacious yet compact. “The designers at Argo Tractors have given the McCormick X4 Series cab a lot of attention to ensure it provides a comfortable and practical workplace,” says Paul Wade, product specialist at GB distributor AgriArgo UK. “It’s quite a challenge making a cab to fit a small tractor that’s in proportion but gives the operator plenty of space and good visibility – but the X4 designers have achieved that.” A narrow header rail creates a deep windscreen for maximum forwards visibility; full-size doors provide easy access with no ‘B’ pillars to interrupt the view to either side; and controls on the right-hand console are angled towards the driver making them easy to use. The novel idea of housing the cab air filters in the rear pillars makes them easy to reach for cleaning and results in a slim roof panel for low overall height – the four smallest
models measure just over 2.4m to the top of the cab, while the three larger machines, which have a slightly longer wheelbase to maintain balance and traction with bigger implements, stand only a little taller at 2.5m. Mechanical control of the 3.4-3.9 tonne lift capacity rear linkage can be upgraded to electronic operation on the 90hp X4.50, 99hp X4.60 and 107hp X4.70, with a 1.75 tonne front linkage and pto also available on these models for added productivity by operating front- and rear-mounted implements simultaneously. Two- or four-wheel drive, cab or open platform, and a choice of synchro shuttle and power shuttle transmissions add to the specification mix. Latest Deutz engines with simple emissions control technology feature under the bonnet of the 64hp X4.20C, 69hp X4.30C and 76hp X4.40C, which are slightly narrower and shorter than the others. There is also the 75hp X4.35C with a Perkins engine to earlier emissions rules, which gives it a distinct price advantage while engine stocks last. “This new McCormick tractor design is unlike anything we’ve had in the range before and it readily complements our bigger tractors, which have also undergone significant upgrades and new features,” says Paul Wade. “With the support of a professional dealer network and parts operations at our base near Doncaster and the Argo Tractors international parts distribution centre in northern France, it’s a range that deserves consideration by anyone operating in the amenity sector.” www.mccormick.agriargouk.co.uk

Be green‌in more ways than one Many machinery operators, including golf courses, sports & leisure facilities, local authorities and contractors, are proactively seeking to protect the environment from pollution through a reduction in exhaust emissions from their equipment. As a result, there is a constant expectation for manufacturers to develop and apply the latest technology to deliver cleaner engine emissions while maintaining or improving machine performance. John Deere’s new 4066M and 4066R compact tractors are meeting this green challenge in several ways, thanks mainly to the use of fully integrated diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology. This innovation results in reduced engine
exhaust emissions and maintains the required performance levels to meet a wide range of customer needs, says the company. These 66hp four-cylinder compact models benefit from the same technology used in larger John Deere agricultural tractors, which helps to reduce emissions compared to standard non-DPF engines. This ex-factory solution is also designed with service requirements in mind. Except for the usual daily maintenance checks and standard servicing intervals, no additional cleaning or manual effort is required to keep the engine running efficiently, which greatly reduces labour requirements. www.JohnDeere.co.uk

Best Buy by Which? Three new lawnmowers have been added to the EGO Power+ range which now includes a contemporary steel deck design that is available with a 50cm width with the option of a self-drive feature that runs from an independent motor. This can be operated at variable speeds dependent on the user and grass conditions. Due to the independent motor, the self-drive feature operates separately to the cutting system. A 52cm poly deck model has also been added to the range to offer a wider alternative to the existing 50cm mower. The new poly model also features the self-drive option. All four mowers in the range are able to be compactly folded for vertical storage and have mulching capabilities. EGO’s European marketing director, Steve Roskell, told The Landscaper, “Our 2015 launch season showed us that customers are desperately seeking an alternative to petrol and electric products. The popularity of our range immediately showed us that our 56 volt products offer them just that. Our 49cm poly deck mower was the most popular product last year which is why we quadrupled the size of the mower product offering ready for the 2016 season”. New batteries, featuring EGO’s patented arc design and “keep cool” cell technology, have also been added to the range with a 5Ah and 7.5Ah being introduced to power the mower’s new features. The EGO LM2001E mower has recently been awarded Best Buy by Which? the largest consumer body in the UK, with over 680,000 members subscribing to their magazine, and over 335,000 online subscribers. EGO Power+ products are available nationwide from
independent Henton & Chattell dealers, and online at www.egopowerplus.co.uk. Prices of the new lawnmowers start at £539.

sprayers
The spraying season Winter has been one of the wettest in recent memory. Mildness before Christmas led to a lot of vegetation growth, but late frosts in February and March is slowing spring down and damaging the budding trees. The spraying season has arrived. By Alan Abel All persons applying pesticides must now hold NPTC Pesticide Application module One and then either PA Six for using a knapsack and PA Two for using a boom type sprayer. This has led to a rush of people trying to get these qualifications in time for the new up and coming spraying season. Many smaller sports clubs have had someone holding the Grandfather right and this will lead to these clubs to arrange for training, as attached to this legislation is the necessity for the NPTC certificate is required to be shown or stated when buying any pesticide. In addition to this, under the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), all pesticide application equipment requires an NSTS test certificate from 26 November 2016, but it is surprising that the National Sprayer Testing Scheme (NSTS) has been in place since 2003. Annual inspection of application equipment shows best practice. It also ensures maximum sprayer efficiency and can reduce costly downtime. It shows commitment to the Voluntary Initiative and satisfies industry protocols. All selfpropelled, trailed or mounted equipment with a boom width over 3 metres will require testing. A test must be carried out every 5 years from 26 November 2016 and every 3 years from 26 November 2020. Handheld (including knapsack) sprayers should be regularly checked and a record kept. This checklist
can be found on the NSTS website. www.nsts.org.uk All these hoops that need to be jumped through are sensible when you think about the costs of pesticides and the care that must be taken during the application window.

weed control
If the sprayer calibration was 10% out, then the cost increase is significant. Also there may be issues with the turf that has been treated with scorching etc. When you combine this with the WFD (Water Framework Directive) which is probably the most important EU legislation that is affecting pesticide application, there is so much for all of us to understand with regards to our industry and what a fragile situation exists and how careful we must all be to guarantee the existence of herbicides for the future of economic weed and disease control. It’s not just getting the machine out of the shed and hoping it isn’t leaking when you pressurise it. If pesticides are found in water extremely small concentrations: (i.e. an aspirin pill in an Olympic size swimming pool) then the active ingredient may be in jeopardised. The Amenity Forum is actively involved in educating all involved in Pesticide application in the Amenity sector. There are updating roadshows taking place throughout the country and information can be found on their website www.amenityforum.co.uk While all the above is not meant to be frightening, it illustrates just how much information and legislation must be understood before controlling weeds, diseases and insects. However, it may be prudent to ask a specialist Company to undertake spraying services for you. A survey of each site would be carried out and the correct pesticide for the specific problem would be supplied and applied safely haven taken into account that all the necessary hoops have been jumped through and the empty containers taken away and safely disposed of and keeping the correct record of application. In November the ‘Grandfather Rights’ were taken away as part of the new legislation that is in force as part of the SUD and the National Action Plan. The establishment of National Action Plans - compulsory testing of application equipment; provision of training for, and arrangements for the certification of, operators, advisors and distributors; a ban (subject to limited exceptions) on aerial spraying; provisions to protect water, public spaces and conservation areas; the minimisation of risks from handling, storage and disposal; and the promotion of low input regimes (including Integrated Pest Management (IPM). It pays to accessorise Backpack or knapsack sprayers are unquestionably useful tools. Professionals are missing a trick or two when using knapsack sprayers as they may be much more versatile than one first thinks. By Ivan Zytynski. Sometimes little things can make a big difference. The addition of accessories can be used to enhance many things and not just for decorative or aesthetic purposes. For example, the accessories available for knapsack sprayers will actually add functionality and have the potential to vastly expand the uses for these spraying devices. The most basic add-on to a sprayer is a multiple nozzle boom. This allows for wider spraying enabling much larger areas to be treated quickly. Most professional users will know about the basic booms available, although what might not be known is that apart from side spraying booms, rear mounted and even adjustable angle booms are available on the market. These more advanced booms can dramatically improve performance and help deliver the spray exactly where it is needed. Soil and stem injectors are also available for use with backpack sprayers. These allow fluid to be pumped under the earth (to treat a plant root system) or directly into the stems of plants. There are a variety of applications where this targeted spraying is more effective, such as treating Japanese Knotweed which often needs a stem injected dose of herbicide. Various flow regulators can be fitted to sprayers which will improve the accuracy of spraying but what you might not have seen before is dosing valves. These deliver an exact amount of fluid per trigger press so, if treating thousands of plants in a nursery an accurate dose can be delivered to each one. All these devices can be used to increase the efficiency of the spraying by either ensuring a more consistent droplet size and / or a more consistent flow rate. So whilst they do not increase the utility of the sprayer - they certainly do enhance its performance and costeffectiveness. Most knapsack sprayer users will be aware of basic lance extensions but they might not be aware that the following are also available: telescopic lances, curved lance and two nozzle

lances. All these options are a practical way of helping to make those harder-to-reach, less accessible jobs that little bit easier. As with the booms there are many different specific applications for the more unusual spray lance configurations but essentially all help serve to get the spray more easily and more accurately to where it is needed. With this array of accessories a knapsack sprayer becomes a highly versatile spraying system suitable for a wide variety of spraying jobs. Glyphosate - conflicting scientific reports As things stand a decision is required by the end of June or glyphosate, one of the most common components in popular weed killers, will in effect lose its approval. At a meeting in early March, all 28 EU member states were expected to endorse a European Commission proposal to extend the authorisation but the vote was postponed after several member states refused to approve the chemical. Conflicting scientific reports has added to this concern; whilst the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) says glyphosate is safe, the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) says it is “probably carcinogenic”. The Swedish environment minister, Asa Romson, (pictured )said: “We won’t take risks with glyphosate and we don’t think the analysis done so far is good enough.” More uncertainty has been added by the Environment Committee of the European Parliament which voted 38 to

6 in favour of conducting an independent review before considering licence renewal: “So long as serious concerns remain about the carcinogenicity and endocrine disruptive properties of the herbicide glyphosate, which is used in hundreds of farm, forestry, urban and garden applications, the commission should not renew its authorisation” “Instead, it should conduct an independent review and disclose all the scientific evidence that the European Food Safety Authority used to assess glyphosate.” In the UK, some water companies, contractors and councils are already taking a proactive move to integrate current methods with alternative practices. Cardley-Wave provide a range of manual and machine mounted 100% hot water weed control systems which has allowed user organisations to reduce their dependence on conventional chemicals whilst also utilising the unit for additional applications: Aberdeen City Councillor Neil Cooney explained, “Protecting the environment is extremely important to the City Council and this excellent system allows us to get rid

of weeds simply by dousing them with hot water. An added advantage is that we can also use it as a quick and efficient way to get rid of unsightly chewing gum and graffiti.” “More and more countries are banning the use of certain types of weedkillers so it makes sense for Aberdeen to stay ahead of the legislation and take the best environmentallyfriendly course of action now available to control weed growth.” If you are interested in one future-proof sustainable solution to kill weeds, moss and algae whilst also allowing for additional cleansing applications, including gum and graffiti removal. Invasives for sale In the UK, the government has banned seven species of aquatic weed from sale or advertisement in England because they have destructively colonised rivers and waterways. But at least three were openly available for sale on eBay and one on Amazon for delivery to any Briton with a credit card. Ebay carried several advertisements offering to ship floating pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides), water fern (Azolla filiculoides) and parrot’s feather (Myriophyllum aquaticum), all native to the Americas, into the UK. Amazon had two listings (one inactive) for parrot’s feather. Vendors were located in Latvia, Australia, Poland, Germany and even inside the UK. A spokesman for the Canal & River Trust described these intruders as “hugely damaging to the country’s native plantlife”, and said the availability of the plants was “extremely worrying”. A spokeswoman for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed that sale or advertisement of the species in question was an offence, but would not confirm whether any further action would be taken against the companies or sellers in this case. “We work with the gardening trade and internet companies to remove listings and inform sellers of their legal responsibility,” she said. After being made aware of the potential legal breach, Amazon removed both of their listings for parrots feather. In the US, the largest online market for living organisms, at least 4,000 businesses and 15,000 individuals sell reptiles online. The number of live fish and snails bought online is even larger. Plant traders likely number in the tens of thousands.

Flood repairs Neil McLoughlin, course manager at Deeside Golf Club, has been in the industry for over twenty years. Last year the River caused the courses to flood six times and this year the same problem has occurred four times already. “We do use a lot of Primo Maxx for the greens, tees, fairways, approaches and on some rough around the greens. Keeping on top of Primo Maxx applications has prepared us for when we flood because I can afford to skip a cut. fill half a box. The greens must have been a hell of a lot slower in the afternoons than they were in the mornings before we were using Primo Maxx. Neil sprays his greens every two weeks with Primo Maxx and in addition to applying the growth regulator he applies two granular feeds a year to the greens and one at the start of the season on the tees “We used SierrablenPlus this year – which is the first time we’ve used it. We were looking for a product that would give us a good slow release without a flush of growth. Coming out of a very hard winter we were frozen for a long period of time and the green surrounds were in a very poor condition. We had the challenge of trying to grow grass in May last year when there was no soil temperature and we had the Championship in the middle of June too. So we urgently needed something that would colour them up and thicken the sward without that top growth. We tried the SierrablenPlus Stress Control 15-0-28 and it worked incredibly well, so I’ll definitely be sticking with it going forward.” Other products to also feature in Neil’s Everris inventory is Greenmaster Liquid Spring & Summer 12-4-6, which is ideal to use during the main growth periods; Qualibra – a premier wetting and water conservation agent and MedallionTL fungicide – a product which Neil believes offers long-lasting control in winter conditions. www.icl-sf.co.uk
Into the summer The combination of three Classen machines, the Aerator, Turf Rake and Overseeder are precisely what turf professionals need as the late spring grass growth
puts on a spurt towards summer. Aeration is needed to improve the air exchange between the soil and the atmosphere, to help relieve compaction, reduce water run-off and puddling. The Classen RA 21 Aerator offers a choice of solid or hollow tines so the groundsman can choose according to the work to be done. The core tines reciprocate at 450 revolutions per minute allowing the operator to cover 26,000 square feet in an hour. Self-propelled and quality engineered, the aerator is designed to punch cleaner holes in tough soil without additional weights. Scarifying is of course important for removing moss and thatch that prevent rainwater getting to grass roots and to help promote growth of fresh, healthy sward. The Classen Turf Rake is much favoured by contractors and hire operators as a versatile and portable dethatcher with flail blades that adjust to five different heights and a folding handle for easy transportation. On the Classen Turf Overseeders the front seed drop ensures follow-up soil coverage for better seed germination, offering an easy and convenient way to seed a new lawn, or overseed an existing lawn. Blade life is doubled by having a unique design with a cutting edge on both ends and the overseeder converts in minutes to a rake or vertical cutter. There’s a choice of standard or self-propelled models, both with handles that fold easily for storage and transportation. Each of this trio of machines, which Schiller Grounds Care term the Classen Spring Turfcare Collection, comes with a two-year warranty and provide turf professionals, contractors and hire companies with a year-round grass maintenance system. Whether it’s a unique and eye-catching design on a driveway, a wow factor patio, an inviting terrace, or purposeful paved pathway, hard landscaping in the garden is achieving a number of objectives for today’s homeowners with convenience being high on the priority list. Paved areas now offer a low maintenance solution and an opportunity to extend living space for dining, relaxing and for some, even a more formal outdoor cooking space. When it comes to garden maintenance, weeds between block paving, large rectangular flagstones, cobbles, and the popular square British slab are no longer the interminable headache they once were. Products like Dansand No Weed are proving to be incredibly effective in nullifying the paving weed threat ensuring paved, patio and pathway areas remain low maintenance and weed free. “We are continuing to see a strong uptake in products like Dansand No Weed” says Ted McLoughlin, Sales Director at Active Products, who are the exclusive distributors for the Dansand range in the UK. “It seems labour-intensive gardens are on the wane and busy homeowners, particularly urban dwellers are opting for a wide range of paved areas as part of their garden space. No Weed is a very popular solution because of its eco-friendly credentials and ability to prevent weeds between joints, creating a long-lasting and beautiful finish for any paved outdoor space.” www.active-products.co.uk Tel 01371 872842

Say goodbye to patio black spots for good! What are black spots and what causes them to grow on stonework? ‘Patio Black Spots’ are those hideous black marks and spots that colonise on the surface of most garden stonework after an average 3 year period. They begin life as tiny dustlike microspores (sometimes called Black Lichen), originating from the tree. These spores travel through the air by the wind and rain, landing in their millions, unseen, on your garden stonework. How can you get rid them? It is possible to get your patio looking fresh and new this summer with The Patio Black Spot Removal System, an innovative solution that zaps black spots and marks and prevents their return. Simple to use as well as being safe for the garden and its wildlife, this wonderful range that was shortlisted as a Best New Gardening Product by industry experts at the Garden Retail Awards in 2015 is winning an army of fans right across the UK. How does it work? To use the old adage: ‘It does what it says on the tin’, the Patio Black Spot Removal System removes black spots immediately and permanently. There is no need to call in any tradesmen or specialists either because you can use the product yourself. It is really simple to apply and is quick-working too. Is it easy to apply? It is so simple and Patio Black Spot Remover customers, past and present, vary in age, fitness levels and gardening know-how. The chosen Remover is applied neat to the patio area using a pressurized garden washer for ease of use. Then stand back and get some instant gratification as you see the black spots fade pretty much straight away. What makes it so special and different to using a waterpressure washer? The Patio Black Spot Remover and Preventer irrigate the pores in the stone, helping to bring stonework back to its original colour. Whilst a bit of water force or the application of general household cleaning products might give you a temporary solution, they will never offer a

lasting effect. In fact, it only serves to damages the surface: by this time these microspores have anchored themselves onto your stonework, they are there to stay and multiply. Pressure washing can also damage stonework, make it more vulnerable to organic infestations and susceptible to frost damage. Are these products safe to use? Absolutely! All Patio Black Spot Remover and Preventer products are organic, safe to use, and completely biodegradable. It will not compromise the garden or its wildlife in any way. Can the Removers and the Preventer be used on all types of stone? Yes. The formulations are acid and caustic-free formulation so you can use it on every type of stone, be it Artificial Stone, Natural Stone and Brick or Block Paving. Is the range expensive? No. The ‘Removers’ offer a brilliant average cleaning cost of just £3.50 per square metre and the ‘Preventer’ costs less then £1.00 per square metre, annually. How often would I need to use the range? The Patio Black Spot Remover is a one-off treatment, complemented by the Patio Black Spot Preventer which is to be applied annually. This prevents the return of black Spots after two years – the period in which the spores germinate. Where can I buy it? You can buy direct from www.patioblackspotremoval. com or call 01252 702123 to see where your nearest stockist is.

Growing fast With just weeks until the 7th National Plant Show this year’s event is set to be the best yet. HTA’S Harley Coles reports. The National Plant Show, with headline Sponsor Hortipak is bigger than ever with more exhibitors, features and reasons to visit this year’s event taking place on 21 – 22 June at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry. The Show’s back to basics approach ensures the spotlight shines purely on the plants at the best time of year in order for visitors to plan their ranges for the following seasons. We welcome a number of new exhibitors this year including The Plant Yard, Butters Group, Kelly’s Nursery, Kildaire Growers, Porters Fuchsias, Rosemasters ltd and Premium Christmas trees to name a few. Our full exhibitor list can be seen on our website - www. nationalplantshow.co.uk Come and meet the team in the new HTA Village. This will look to showcase everything the HTA has to offer including Membership, Market Information, National Garden Gift Vouchers, Events, Horticulture and Training as well as the Association of Professional Landscapers, BOPP, Cost Reduction Partners and our show Media Office. Also new in 2016 our Retail Concept Experience will create a stimulating retail environment for visitors using the HTA Market Information Garden Spender Segmentation as the steer, which can then be implemented in store targeted to your Garden Spenders.
Once again on show are our prestigious New Plant Awards, sponsored by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), showcasing the best in new plant introductions from UK plant suppliers. In addition the Visitor Vote Awards, sponsored by Floramedia are a popular part of the show. With over 100 plants to vote for, visitors are spoilt for choice and often have a tough decision on their hands when deciding which they feel is their favourite plant! The National Plant Show seminars provide an added extra to the show. With a focus on plants (goes without saying!) Confirmed in our Seminar line

Virtual The HTA are working with Panoramic Partner Striking Places to put together a virtual tour of the main show feature areas including the New Plant Area, HTA Village and Hortipak Hub amongst others. As well as showcasing the features it also gives you an idea of what could be achieved in your own garden centres or glasshouses to showcase your business to clients and potential customers. Striking Places will also be at the show for the duration where you will be able to see the virtual tour before it’s uploaded following the event. www.strikingplaces.com
Planting the Seed of Inspiration Whilst the focus at the HTA National Plant Show is clearly on plants themselves it also provides a fantastic platform for exhibitors to demonstrate innovative and inspiring displays that ultimately lead to increased plant sales. The Planting the Seed Award – Visitor Vote, highlights those displays that capture the imagination, provide clear information and attract attention. They also offer a great example to our visitors of how the plants can look if you were to create a display in store. These displays plant the seed of inspiration. This year visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite stand display, the stand that has given them the most food for thought and great ideas Kate Gould to leave the show with. The winners of the judged Best Plant Display award 2015 were Wyevale with their ‘bringing the inside out’ concept which featured a fully planted living room hotly followed by Key Essentials and Parkers Nurseries with their simple but effective approaches in merchandising.
for the district. The theme of this year’s festival is “peace” and it will be curated by the former director of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Stephen Bennett alongside leading garden tutor and RHS judge Andrew Fisher Tomlin . Commenting on the purpose of the festival, Beşiktaş Mayor Atty. Murat Hazinedar said, “The International Garden and Flower Festival is to give a message. For this reason, we consider this festival, which is thematised with peace, important. Flowers symbolize peace. Let the weapons be flowers, not bullets. And let the tanks scatter flowers, not cannon balls.” In addition the festival aims to encourage the culture of personal gardening at home and to raise awareness of the botanic and green environment throughout the cities’ public spaces. Kates Garden is called ‘A Garden of Two Sides’ and explores the idea that the road to peace is a fragile path. One side of the garden is hard and uncompromising with barbed wire, distressed concrete and architectural spiky plants. With perseverance, the journey through this area with its high walls and security fencing leads you to a more peaceful space where the planting is softer, the water is calming and there is communal space to sit and talk. The harsh wall that divides the space is apparent on both sides of the garden and in part on the peaceful side of the garden it is not decorated in any way, reflecting the idea that peace can be fragile and that it does not take much to revert to chaos.
Garden for Peace Kate Gould has been invited to design a garden for the Beşiktaş International Garden and Flower Festival in Turkey. The festival will run from May 7th to 15th 2016 and is to become an annual hallmark event

Selling plants throughout the South East Starting in 1907, Peter’s Eastwood grandfather rented a kitchen garden nursery from the Downs Hotel in Hassocks, before opening his open shop in the village, selling high quality fruit, vegetables and flowers. His peaches, grapes and nectarines were popular with consumers throughout London, a testament to the quality he achieved. He then expanded into Brighton, buying a plant nursery with retail premises, enjoying roaring trade and repeat custom with local people who appreciated the care he and Peter’s father put into nurturing plants. Peter opened the garden nursery in Hassocks in 1971, following the decision to sell the Brighton nursery so it could be redeveloped as a garden centre. He and his son, Adam, now run the business, supplying year round bedding plants, seasonal pot plants and garden bulbs to garden centres throughout South East England.
